The Soldier
Not being selected as a Jutak warrior ruined Rook Atrian’s dreams of becoming one of the famed soldiers. Until an elite covert team reached out to him. Tasked with the darker missions that straddle the lines between right and wrong, the Ghost Unit fits him better than anything he could have imagined.
But now one woman jeopardizes the life he’s made. Her passion burns as bright as a flame and Rook’s never been afraid of getting burned.
Their mission versus their love. Which will either of them choose?
**From the universe that brought you A World Beyond comes a new series about hot, alien soldiers. Meet the members of Ghost Unit.
i had hopes for this book, not high hopes exactly, but middling hopes. The premise could have been interesting. A female assassin is something I’m always interested in. A cat and mouse game? Love it. But this was just not well executed in the slightest. We had insta love for literally no good reason, kinda wish it was a fated mates situation so we at least had some explanation for their relationship. Instead it’s like a random sentence here or there of them being hot for each other and that’s it. It also felt very short? And i didn’t feel like the resolution of the cat and mouse game was satisfying? Also our main girl didn’t feel very capable even though she kept doing very capable things? Idk i just…
some sort of spoiler thoughts (not really but sort of)
I’ll probably read the next book in the series tho, can’t lie.
I’ve always loved Michelle Howard’s books and this one is no exception. It’s the story of Rook, who had failed to become a Jutak warrior, but instead was offered a position as team leader in the newly formed and ultra secret Ghost unit. The Ghost unit handled jobs that were just a bit shy of the law than the jobs the Jutak warriors handled, but jobs that still needed to be handled.
One of the missions had Rook posing as the son of a wealthy family at the annual Ice Ball. He was hoping to meet up with Tempest, a woman they believed had killed a number of men working for Jarad of House Oolun, a criminal and drug lord that the Ghost unit was forced to protect because he was turning evidence against even bigger drug lords to the Alliance. What Rook wasn’t expecting was the immediate connection he felt for Tempest.
This story has plenty of action and definitely has plenty of steam. Both Rook and his teammates and Tempest were very good at what they did and the character development was excellent. However, the story line was really fantastic. I’m looking forward to reading more books featuring the Ghost unit! My Rating: 5 Stars!
I've got to say that I was really excited when I learned about this series, specially because I knew there was a connection with AWB series and its characters. But oh surprise! The book was full of typos and mechanics mistakes; it was really a bummer. Not only that but you could clearly see the difference between other books by this author. The plot was rushed. There was not the level of depth that we know she puts into her characters, their backgrounds were there but ultimately there was no space for attachment to the character. It was rushed, that is the correct description. It had big potential but did not get there. At least for me that is the way it felt.
Wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised! Not like her other series but yet it is. Lol that tells you nothing other than it’s good, really good, if you’ve read the other series. Pretty fast paced and keeps your interest - don’t start it late at night you won’t want to put it down. At first you don’t really like this team but they grow on ya. Wasn’t quite sure how Rook and Fina were gonna make it work - you’re gonna love how it ends.
Enjoyed it very much and look forward to the next one. If you love a tough warrior clashing with ahead strong woman this is just up your alley. It was great to have a glimpse of the past and would love to see more. If you have not read the Jatak Unit series I highly recommend you seek them out.
I think the premise didn’t work for me. Hard to like characters that use torture and assassination to achieve their goals. I get it’s a revenge story but not really a fan of vigilantes. I think it was the torture that ruined it for me, and took it from “justice to going to far along the unforgivable path.
Really liked the main characters, both scarred by the past yet still have courage to feel for each other, to start that first trust . Really liked the glimpse of the kids of Kyele, how strong they grew up to be. Looking forward the next ghost unit story.
Loved, Loved the AWB series. So, So happy to be back with them somewhat. As usual Michelle's charachters are well developed. Her heroines are always kick a_ _! Cannot wait for more.
