The Celestials want her dead. The Demons would kill to have her. Only he can protect her from both—but can he save her from herself?

***

A fallen star’s magic rips Evie from her family, revealing the dark secrets of her true bloodline. As if being mistaken as a dark elf isn’t enough, she finds out she is an Infernal—a half-celestial demon. She is the key to the Tri-realms, and the very thing that may tip the scales of the Eternal War between the Celestials and Demons. Both are on the hunt for her blood.

Her goddess demands that she go to the Abyss to save her father. In a race against time and while battling her own growing power, she must risk everything to do what is right. But doing what is right just might mean losing the man she has come to love.

***

Cain thrives in darkness. As a demonkin—a half-demon—the world hates him, and violence follows him. Never backing from a fight, he embraces his reality. With every battle, he relishes the strength he gains. The day will come when he faces the demon who had hurt his mother—and this time he will kill him.

When the fates interfere and place Evie in his destructive path, he cannot refuse the need to protect her and save her. Nor can he fight the desire she stirs in his heart and soul. Never had anyone accepted him for who he was without compromise. But she comes with the unreasonable demands of a goddess he had long since turned his back on and sworn to never let into his life again. Now he must choose between getting his revenge and ignoring the goddess demands or losing Evie forever.

I found the beginning to be clunky. Each setting event would start off with care, detailed and decent emotion, for the story to be whisked away and rushed to the next plot point. It made it difficult to immerse myself into the story, given that pace. It wasn't until Evie, the main character, reached Greyhaven in Chapter 12 that I resonated with it. The story slowed down and established itself.

Evie felt very nieve and unexperienced to the dangers around her. I felt this worked so that Cain, the main male character, could step in to fill her shortcomings. I actually liked his character a lot better than Evie, had more depth and substance in my opinion, compared. Evie felt more like a vehicle to push the plot, despite being the main voice. I found myself more interested in those that surrounded her. There were quite a few.. a dwarf, fire dancer, and of course angels and demons. The story even touched some on the gods that rule their universe. Their mystery was my biggest pull into the story.

As a first to establish a series, a solid B+, I think. Some things I would have liked a conclusion or at least mention to not seem forgotten, but the arch of Evie's parents, to the start of Evie's journey, with possibilities of higher dilemma made a good story.

For clarity: I did not purchase the book. I received an ARC version from the author. I chose to read, and thus leave a review. This review is my own and left voluntarily.

Oooooo! Yes please.

This was fantastic! I read the parent’s story in Fierce Hearts anthology so I’ve been looking forward to this and man oh man it did not disappoint!

The imagery and detail was beautiful. The characters were so diverse and I loved the multiple povs. Plus how the story starts with the parents, then a baby, to a young teen, to a young woman with incredible powers…so engaging and draws you in.

The plot was incredibly good. Fast paced, full of action and suspense and yes my favorite…romance. The scene in the grove is by far my favorite.

This book does not skip on the feels either. So for lovers of more dark and dangerous this is one you may really like.

A m/f epic fantasy romance with a different few couples. Angels, demons, lots of fantastical creatures, beautiful locations, battle scenes, love and finding one’s inner strength.

This book takes you on an adventure with many different beings: demons, angels, dwarves and druids and it is so fun! I truly enjoyed this arc. Thank you for the opportunity! I love that there are different realms and the problems they phase including character growth. It is written well. I love Evie. Cain is also growing on me. I will continue the story when the next book releases! Magic use was well explained too.

Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. I was drawn into this story very quickly. Beautifully written, emotionally charged with a plot that gripped me from the first chapter. A truly epic story of the power of a mother’s love, and the heartfelt journey of her daughter’s destiny. I was cheering, then biting my nails, then the tears of sadness fell only to turn into extreme joy as Evie’s path is revealed. This is a story I will not forget, and I can’t wait to know more!

This has been one of my favorite books I have read this year!
I was pulled into the book and could not get enough. I felt like I was in the world that Carlin had created; I am also a big fan of her inspiration from one of my favorite games, Dunguns and Dragons. When reading, I could see this being played as a game as the small move that was going on in my head. The story writing was excellent, and I fell in love with the characters and settings.

I love all the different characters, and they all feel so personal. When something happened to one of the side characters, I was caught up in my emotions over what was happening to them. Evie was an interesting main character, and I could connect with her and her struggle in the story. My heart bleeds for her as she finds her way into the story. The same goes for Cain. AAAHHHH!!! I want to take these two and give them a cozy place where they do not have to see any more trouble! The amount of times one or both had a hard time mentally, emotionally, or physically, I was yelling and crying. I felt the joy that they had and was smirking like a bobcat for those steamy scenes.

The world built was terrific, and I want to read more books from this setting. I could tell the love put into making this world, and I could not get enough. The details were unique and put the picture into my mind.
I can not wait to read book tow of this series! You have to read book one to see why I am so excited to read the next book in the series.

When the book first started I found that the prologue could be a whole book of its own ! Which is never a bad thing in my opinion, this book had so much I didn’t even know I was looking for . I am a newer D&D player in the last 3 years and this book delivered on all the fantasy I see when I am in a campaign. Therena has an amazing way of writing that keeps you engaged in the moment and you forget that you’re reading a book because you feel pulled into the world that she has created. Evie is such a loveable character from the beginning and you can do nothing but route for her every step of the way through her first leg of this massive journey she is taking .

I laughed and screamed and cried all the way through this book and don’t regret one second of it , I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy reads that have adventure, secrets and romance it will certainly not disappoint. The only thing I will say is I am so excited for the second book because how this leaves us I wanted more right away !

If you’re looking for a romantasy that puts a new spin on angels, demons, deities, and the supernatural, then you’re going to want to read this! Carlin does an amazing job building a unique world, with magical beings and characters that you’ll find hard to forget. I love the different planes of existence, and how different beings inhabit different planes. Evie is an interesting character, and although we get to see her story unfold from the start, it felt like she didn’t have quite the same amount of depth as Cain does. It’s clear, though, that the two of them are meant for each other, as they compliment and fit together like two puzzle pieces (even if they come from entirely different walks of life). I enjoyed getting to see everything unfold from multiple POVs, it really helps flesh out the story. The pacing is fairly quick at first, and only slows down slightly once you’re deeper in. I admit by the end I was reluctant to leave the world and characters behind. I cannot wait to see what the next book in the series has in store!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you to Book Sirens and Therena Carlin for the ARC.

Plot 4/5
Characters 3.75/5
Ending 3.75/5
Interest 3.75/5

Overall 3.75/5

-I didn’t go into this book with any expectations but I enjoyed it. I really liked the introduction to the story. It set the story very well and I de so intrigued right from the get go. The story then evolved into years after the initial prologue part but there were some moments I felt a little bored. The mains storyline was very character based which was good in some moments but others not so much.

-I liked the characters overall. I had imagined them so different than what they really were which was a little off putting in a way. I thought they would have been more firery for both Cain and Evie. They were both quite soft characters compared to their demonic nature. Their relationship was a little too fast burn for me. I thought it would have been slow and all especially considering both of their backgrounds and ancestors but it went quite quickly from when they met.

-Writing this review a few days later, I don’t remember much to be honest. I remember wanting to know what happens next but I don’t. Feel myself the need to read more. It was quite an entertaining book at times but not relenting everything, I may or may not read on given the opportunity.

This was a new author for me and I received a free copy of this book to review. I really enjoyed this book and was pleasantly surprised. The characters are fun and interesting. The way the characters stories are weaved together is entertaining and the action is exciting. It does end in a cliff hanger and I look forward to the reading the next book.
