Dr. Kate Deming has spent four brutal years working in a Chicago ER, swinging back and forth from tragedy at work to guilt for what she’s missing at home. The prescription is a new job that will allow more time with her growing daughters, an eight-year-old wannabe pirate planning to run away to the high seas and a twelve-year old expert in eye-rolling and sarcasm who is the star of her middle school’s new code breaking team.
When a sophisticated ransomware attack paralyzes the hospital’s electronic medical record, the hospital pinpoints Kate’s computer as the electronic gateway. Is this a case of crossed circuits, or is someone deliberately targeting her? For once, her husband’s tech know-how can’t help her. Meanwhile, her daughter’s classmate overdoses to get away from a sextortion scheme that her daughter knows too much about.
Can Kate crack the code before another child gets hurt?
Most people would collapse under the strain the main character faces in this novel. Dr. Kate Deming struggles to cope with brutal ER shifts and never having enough time for family life with her husband and two young daughters. Then hackers paralyze the hospital’s records system, the FBI raids her apartment, and her husband is arrested. When it seems life can’t get any more traumatic, Kate faces a grave situation regarding one of the girls. The story lines are skillfully woven together, and the tension never lets up until the end. Even then, all of Kate’s problems have not been solved, so I hope there will be a fourth book in this excellent suspense series.
I loved this medical thriller by Dr. Ann Dominguez. When a hospital's entire patient management and records system gets taken over by a ransomware threat, emergency room physician Dr. Kate Deming must continue to serve her patients while also discovering an overwhelming threat to her home, family, and livelihood. Dominguez certainly knows how to weave suspense into every chapter and every page. I stayed up way too late into the night finishing this intense and satisfying read. Highly recommended!
A medical thriller that races from page one. Fast-paced and thought-provoking, it reminds us how easily we overlook what’s right in front of us—until it’s too late. Stories collide in willful blindness, buried truths, and redemption.
After a ransomware attack paralyzes a hospital on Chicago’s south side, emergency room Dr. Kate Deming’s laptop is pinpointed as the gateway point. She’s sure it’s a mistake until the FBI arrests her husband; the parent responsible for taking care of their two daughters while Kate works long hours at the hospital. Their 8-year-old is into pirates, but the only thing that grips the 12-year-old is being on her school’s code-breaking team. Tension builds as Kate tries to come to terms with her husband’s secrets in this brilliant medical thriller about truth, trust, raising kids, and navigating a marriage.
