Die Geschichte eines M枚rders (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), which quickly topped the European best-seller list and eventually sold millions of copies worldwide.

The Pigeon is a novella by Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲, about the fictional character Jonathan Noel, a solitary Parisian bank security guard, who undergoes an existential crisis when a pigeon roosts in front of his one-room apartment's door, prohibiting him entrance to his private sanctuary.
The story takes place in the span of one day, and follows how this seemingly insignificant event compounds to threaten Noel's sanity.
The titular pigeon can be a symbol for disorder intruding on the protagonist's meticulously organized existence, and is obviously in ironic inter textual dialogue with U.S. writer Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem The Raven, which features its titular bird perched over its protagonist's door instead of M. Noel's pigeon.
This book is 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲's followup to his nine-year bestselling first novel, Perfume.

Can you imagine a small bird with its mere presence chasing a man from his home and pushing him to the brink of madness?
If this little premise intrigues you, then maybe you should look into this story. It is a relatively quick read, but not a very easy one, especially when it comes to interpretation.
The novel follows a man called Jonathan Noel. The opening paragraph tells us quite a lot about him.
"At the time the pigeon affair overtook him, unhinging his life from one day to the next, Jonathan Noel, already past fifty, could look back over a good twenty-year period of total uneventfulness and would never have expected anything of importance could ever overtake him again 鈥� other than death some day. And that was perfectly all right with him."
Jonathan's life is reclusive, tedious, and trivial, at least on the surface. Despite this banality, or maybe because of it, he turns out to be weak... weak in the face of a pigeon. One day, the man discovers a pigeon in his apartment. The bird threatens to turn his monotonous life upside down. The pigeon happens to be an impertinent creature, a very impertinent one.
The protagonist starts thinking about how to get rid of the pigeon. It may sound somewhat ludicrous, but the bird somehow affects everything Jonathan does and feels those days. Will the pigeon become the catalyst for some irreversible changes in his life? And what if an unexpected hole in the trousers is added in? It is an exceptional, strange, offbeat, and absurd novel in which a man quickly sees a midlife crisis. It is not that famous episode of a "midlife crisis," not an emergency related to the meeting with a common bird. This story is based on the man's panic in his ordinary fifties, routine, mute, facing the pigeon's presence in the corridor to his room. The book's action takes place over a brief period in which the author indulges in the psychological study of his character. Because of its strangeness, I think this book can't leave the reader indifferent. Well-written text properly conducted history. It is a book to discover, not if only out of curiosity.

What Passes For Success
鈥淗e was not a man of action. He was a man of resignation.鈥� And consequently, he was also a man of strict routine, of rigid habit, of acute sensitivity to any deviation from the expected. Suskind鈥檚 anti-protagonist is also emotional; he suffers anger and fear, and resentments.
But these emotions are provoked only by events, mostly trivial except to him, not by memory or positive desire of any sort. He wants nothing other than what he has, especially when the little he has is threatened.
Until the moment of self-recognition, the moment when his whole life is explained in an instant as one trapped in childhood trauma: 鈥�... you鈥檙e a child, you only dreamed that you had grown up to be a disgusting old guard in Paris, but you鈥檙e a child and you鈥檙e sitting in the cellar of your parents鈥� house, and outside is war, and you鈥檙e trapped, buried, forgotten. Why don鈥檛 they come? Why don鈥檛 they rescue me? Why is it so deathly still? Where are the other people? My God, where are the other people? I simply cannot live without other people!鈥�
Learning how to survive without other people had become not just a necessary tactic but an end in itself. The Dutch build more polders, perhaps simply because they can; South Americans have revolutions because they know how; Americans arm teachers with guns because... well just because. To what degree do all of us find ourselves similarly trapped by the successful tactics of youth?

Un ins banal, 葯ters, anonim, la vreo 50 de ani, gardian la o banc膬 din Paris, tr膬ie葯te o peripe葲ie care, 卯n mintea lui, ia propor葲ii cosmice, de cataclism universal, de葯i, 卯n realitate, este un fleac. Al葲ii nu i-ar da nici o aten葲ie. Nu e cazul lui Jonathan Noel. Eroul 卯nt卯lne葯te, pe coridorul blocului de garsoniere 卯n care este pe cale s膬 devin膬 fericitul proprietar al unei c膬m膬ru葲e, un porumbel (un porumbel malefic, un porumbel de o viclenie letal膬, 卯ntr-un cuv卯nt, un monstru), 葯i via葲a lui calm膬, perfect ordonat膬, riguroas膬, este dat膬 brusc peste cap.
Sigur, omul nostru are, probabil, o fobie (se 卯nt卯mpl膬 葯i la case mai mari), dar, oricum ar fi, reac葲ia lui este exagerat膬. Urmeaz膬, fire葯te, o zi de co葯mar, 鈥瀟ragediile鈥� se 葲in lan葲: simte o greutate 卯n corp, abia 卯葯i t卯r卯ie picioarele, transpir膬 abundent, 卯葯i d膬 seama de futilitatea slujbei de gardian, nu aude ma葯ina directorului la timp 葯i nu-i deschide poarta imediat, ba, ca o 卯ncoronare a nenorocii, 卯n pauza de pr卯nz, 卯葯i rupe pantalonii de serviciu 卯ntr-un loc inavuabil.
Va ceda oare 卯n fa葲a fatalit膬葲ii sau va ie葯i regenerat? 葮tiu deznod膬m卯ntul, dar n-am voie s膬-l spun.
A葯 卯ncheia prea repede, dac膬 n-a葯 men葲iona umorul acut al unui prozator care, dup膬 un roman extraordinar, memorabl, Parfumul, s-a stins. De la o vreme, Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲 compune eseuri insipide, precum cel despre iubire 葯i moarte, de unde rezult膬 foarte precis c膬 iubirea te face idiot. Scriitorul e ciudat! Nu d膬 interviuri, nu face lans膬ri, nu iese 卯n lume, nu se las膬 fotografiat, e un Pynchon european, mai pu葲in prolific dec卯t americanul...
Un extras care se cuvine citit cu sticlu葲a de Valerian膬 al膬turi 葯i cu o pastilu葲膬 de nitroglicerin膬 sub limb膬:
鈥灻巐 z膬ri. St膬tea 卯n fa葲a u葯ii lui, la nici dou膬zeci de centimetri dep膬rtare de prag... St膬tea a葯a, pe gresia coridorului 卯n culoarea s卯ngelui de vit膬, cu picioarele ro葯ii cu gheare, cu penajul neted 葯i plumburiu, el: porumbelul... 脦l privea pe Jonathan fix prin ochiul st卯ng. Acest ochi, un disc mic, rotund ca un cerc, maroniu cu centrul negru, era cumplit de privit. P膬rea ca un nasture pe penele capului, f膬r膬 gene, f膬r膬 spr卯ncene, gol, f膬r膬 ru葯ine 卯ntors spre exterior 葯i deschis c卯t putea de mare; 卯n acel ochi 卯ns膬 z膬cea ceva precaut 葯i viclean deopotriv膬; 葯i, la fel, nu p膬rea nici deschis, nici 卯nchis, ci pur 葯i simplu inert... Nici o lic膬rire, nici o sclipire nu g膬seai 卯n acel ochi, nici o sc卯nteie de via葲膬. Era un ochi f膬r膬 privire. 葮i 卯l fixa pe Jonathan...鈥� (pp.15-16).
鈥濷 scurt膬 tres膬rire 卯i smuci corpul 葯i 卯n acela葯i timp dou膬 pleoape se 卯nchiser膬 peste ochiul lui, una venind de jos, cealalt膬 de sus, de fapt nu erau chiar pleoape, ci mai degrab膬 un fel de valve ca de cauciuc, 卯nghi葲ind ochiul aidoma unor buze ivite din neant... Abia acum 卯l n膬p膬di pe Jonathan spaima, abia acum p膬rul i se f膬cu m膬ciuc膬 de groaz膬鈥� (pp.16-17).
P. S. Din punct de vedere strict psihologic, Jonathan Noel sufer膬 de o evident膬 tulburare obsesiv-compulsiv膬 (nu suport膬 gunoiul, murd膬ria, e un maniac al igienei) la care se adaug膬 o ornitofobie intermitent膬. C卯nd m膬n卯nc膬 pe o banc膬 卯n parc (cu ocazia asta 卯葯i rupe cracul pantalonului), pacientul nu e 卯nsp膬im卯ntat de porumbei. Nu le d膬 nici o aten葲ie. Numai acas膬 moare de fric膬. Poftim de mai 卯n葲elege ceva!

A late middle-aged bank guard in Paris is startled by a pigeon in the hallway of his dumpy rooming house. We are told in the story that the pigeon symbolizes chaos and anarchy.
This leads to a chain of events where the guard first becomes introspective and then disillusioned about his whole life. We assume he might be Jewish because of the time frame of the story based on the horrors in Germany and because the earliest memories he has are of his mother and father disappearing and of him being shuffled among distant relations to be hidden.
After a bad marriage that lasted only a few months, the guard gave up on life. For decades now he has spent his days standing on three marble steps outside a bank building. And every night for decades he has eaten food off a hotplate and watched TV in his room. He has no family, avoids people, and is absolutely friendless.
Yet, as he reflects on the lives of homeless men he sees on the streets, he thinks things could be worse. Where do we go from here?
Not a masterpiece but thought-provoking and a quick read 鈥� only 115 pages.

鈥淐asi hab铆a puesto un pie en el umbral, cuando ya lo hab铆a levantado, era el izquierdo, la pierna estaba a punto de dar el paso鈥� cuando la vio. Se hallaba sentada ante su puerta, a veinte cent铆metros de umbral, bajo el p谩lido reflejo de la luz matutina que entraba por la ventana. Acurrucada, con los pies rojos, parecidos a garras: la paloma.鈥�
鈥淟a paloma鈥�, de Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲 es el retrato de una obsesi贸n. Una vez que Jonathan la ve sobre su puerta se paraliza, se aturde por razones que no comprende y el ave altera el resto de su d铆a, previo a ir al banco donde trabaja.
No puede estar tranquilo y comienza a desconfiar de todo lo que sucede a su alrededor pensando constantemente que la paloma estar谩 all铆, esper谩ndolo en el mismo lugar, aterroriz谩ndolo, dej谩ndolo perplejo.
厂眉蝉办颈苍诲 mantiene con maestr铆a el suspense de esta nouvelle de poco m谩s de ciento veinte p谩ginas invitando al lector a resolver junto con Jonathan el dilema de esa paloma en el umbral.
Personalmente encontr茅 ciertas conexiones entre 鈥淟a paloma鈥� y tres cuentos de Edgar Allan Poe que rondan en lo mismo: la obsesi贸n y el desvar铆o mental. Me refiero a 鈥淟a esfinge鈥� y 鈥淓l coraz贸n delator鈥�.
Cuando Jonathan presta atenci贸n en ese ojo izquierdo de color marr贸n que lo mira: 鈥淵 ahora fue cuando Jonathan se estremeci贸 por el susto y sus cabellos se erizaron de puro terror. Entr贸 en su habitaci贸n antes de que el ojo de la paloma volviera a abrirse. Puso la cerradura y se tambale贸 hasta la con el coraz贸n desbocado.鈥�
Imposible no relacionarlo con 鈥淓l coraz贸n delator鈥� de Poe: 鈥淭en铆a un ojo semejante al de un buitre. Un ojo celeste y velado por una tela. Cada vez que lo clavaba en m铆 se me helaba la sangre鈥︹€�
Mismo caso para cuando Jonathan logra salir a duras penas con la mortificaci贸n de la paloma en su mente: 鈥淓n ese momento tuvo la sensaci贸n de o铆r un aleteo a sus espaldas鈥� 驴O era que hab铆a rozado la pared con su paraguas?... Pero entonces volvi贸 a o铆rlo, con toda claridad, un corto y seco batir de alas, y el p谩nico se apoder贸 de 茅l鈥� Horrorizado se volvi贸 y baj贸 las escaleras estaba convencido de que no podr铆a regresar jam谩s.鈥�
Algo similar sucede en 鈥淟a esfinge鈥� de Poe cuando el narrador, en este caso bajo los efectos del opio, se aterroriza por lo que ve: 鈥淐uando esta criatura apareci贸 ante mi vista, dud茅 de mi raz贸n, o por lo menos, de la evidencia de mis sentidos, y transcurrieron unos minutos antes de lograr convencerme de que no estaba loco n so帽aba. Sin embargo, cuando describa el monstruo que vi, ser谩 m谩s dif铆cil aceptar estas cosas de lo que fue para m铆.鈥�
Indudablemente nos encontramos con relatos de alta sugesti贸n que acorralan al Jonathan por un lado y al narrador del cuento de Poe por el otro. Es probable que 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲 se haya inspirado en alguno de estos relatos de Poe para escribir el suyo, aunque, m谩s all谩 de las similitudes que yo trazo, 鈥淟a paloma鈥� tiene todos los condimentos, en tan pocas p谩ginas, para seducir al lector y mantenerlo atento e intrigado sobre c贸mo Jonathan tratar谩 de resolver su enigma y terror causado por la paloma鈥�

Jonathan is a NO man -- no friends, no family, no pets, ... no nothing!
His tomorrows are replicas of yesterdays, turning his life into a long, boring, monotonous sort of tune...
Until that fatal pigeon day!
The moment he set eyes on that infamous pigeon in the corridor, chaos popped in!
His shelter was no longer safe -- it was imperious to leave it ... fast and furiously!
Assaulted by an emotional turmoil, he fled!...
However, the unknown was out there, waiting in every corner, menacing him, assuming all kinds of dangers that had to be faced...

His shelter was no longer safe -- it was imperious to leave it ... fast and furiously!
Assaulted by an emotional turmoil, he fled!...
However, the unknown was out there, waiting in every corner, menacing him, assuming all kinds of dangers that had to be faced...

A simple tale in novella form about Jonathan Noel, a man living in France who suffers from a neurosis that makes him afraid of breaking away from his habitual lifestyle, and who never mingles with others, unless it is absolutely necessary.
Once his routine is broken up by the seemingly harmless appearance of a pigeon outside his apartment door, he nearly breaks down completely.
Some people see red. Jonathan Noel sees pigeons
Though an inferior work to his masterpiece, - my favorite stand-alone novel of all-time - tells his short tale with a Master's touch, conveying the right mood, tone, and sense of unease needed to put one's feet right in the character's shoes.

I enjoyed it but feel it necessary to say that this is a book many won't care for. It is based off of one idea, probably could have been a bit better if it were even shorter in length, and with not a lot going on aside from mostly daily routines, it leaves one feeling there could have been more to it, maybe. I expected it to be more of a tragedy, say, in the way was - which in some ways it reminded me of - but that was obviously not the intent of the author's. I must admit, however, that I might have liked it just a little bit more if it had've been more tragic in nature, or at least ended as such.
Not to say he didn't paint a pretty bleak picture. He did. One with a pigeon at the center of it.
What!? I got a pigeon thing going on. What of it..?
Similarly, like , , because of its neurosis elements and its masterful authorial writing stamp clearly embedded in each word and idea, it feels almost in nature. Not to say it copies him, but it definitely reflects a side of him many are familiar with.

For those of you interested in reading this, just remember not to expect too much from it. I, myself, am glad to have read this and was excited to find a very good copy of this particular edition, with its wonderful tribute cover to surrealist painter, . I found it very fitting both before and after my reading of this!

鈥楢t the time the pigeon affair overtook him, unhinging his life from one day to the next, Jonathan Noel, already past fifty, could look back over a good twenty-year period of total uneventfulness and would never have expected anything of importance could ever overtake him again 鈥� other than death some day.鈥�
鈥楾he Pigeon鈥� is an incredibly short story detailing a day (albeit a rather momentous day) in the life of Jonathan Noel. Jonathan leads a secluded and private life as a bank security guard in Paris. He enjoys the life he has made for himself and is perfectly content with it continuing as such for his remaining years; however, on his way to work one morning this all comes collapsing down around him as he discovers a pigeon on his front porch. As soon as the pigeon entered his life, his life literally came crumbling apart in his mind. All of his carefully made plans became as fragile as a snowflake.
鈥樷€ut he suddenly no longer saw himself 鈥� that is, he no longer saw himself as a part of the world surrounding him. It was rather, as if for a few seconds he were standing far away, outside it, and were regarding this world through the wrong end of a telescope.鈥�
I became an instant fan of Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲 after stumbling upon his novel 鈥楶efume鈥�. It left such a permanent imprint on me and is still one of my favorite books to date. I鈥檓 not sure why I never looked into whether or not he had any additional works, but after embarking on my 鈥�1001 Books to Read Before I Die鈥� reading challenge I discovered 鈥楾he Pigeon鈥� as one of those 1001. Overjoyed, I knew I had to have it.
Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲鈥檚 writing is so thoroughly impressionable that earlier this afternoon I saw a pigeon on the side of the road and had to suppress a shiver as Jonathan鈥檚 fears flooded my mind. Mildly amusing, but, I鈥檓 not sure I鈥檒l be able to look at a pigeon the same again. His descriptions of the pigeon and Jonathan鈥檚 instant anxiety over the pigeon were immediately understandable even though, looking at the bigger picture, it seemed as if he made a fuss over nothing. I鈥檒l admit, I laughed at first because it seemed quite absurd, but as the story progressed you can see now it鈥檚 not just the pigeon that affected poor Jonathan in that manner; it was just the catalyst to a series of events that disrupted his painstakingly normal existence.
I鈥檓 giving 鈥楾he Pigeon鈥� 5 stars for one reason and one reason only (and it鈥檚 not because it鈥檚 as great a story as Perfume because it isn鈥檛): because he鈥檚 a truly amazing writer. I will read anything written by Patrick 厂眉蝉办颈苍诲. It鈥檚 just such a shame that there aren鈥檛 more novels of his in existence to read.
