Look around and discover patterns in the natural world! You might see them in leaf veins, in coral reefs, in sand dunes, and in many other places. Rhyming verse is accompanied by stunning photographs and brief sidebars that explain how these different patterns form.
Step outside. Let's find designs branching, cracking, spirals, lines. Search the earth, the seas, the air. Patterns, patterns everywhere.
Beautiful photographs of the world around us combine with poetry and non-fiction descriptions of the patterns that occur in nature. Well-done in all three areas (art, prose, poetry) making a wonderful book for Kinder-1st graders who have an adult reading with them and for 2nd-4th graders to read on their own or with someone else. Highly recommended for elementary libraries.
Thanks for the print arc, Lerner Publishing Group.
This book has such gorgeous photographs! If you’re learning about patterns or nature, this is a great book to add to your list. The main text is rhyming and then there is more information about the type of pattern and now/why it is created. There were lots of different examples of patterns in nature. At the end there are also activities you can do to find/record patterns in nature.
Thank you NetGalley and Lerner Publishing Group for the opportunity to review this book prior to publication.
I really liked how the rhyming lines on each page introduced that page's kind of shape or pattern. More info about that pattern or shape is in the sidebar.
There are full-color photos throughout.
Overall, an engaging and fun book to explain these topics. It will appeal to kids but also to adults because the scope of items covered is interesting and everyone can probably learn something new. A great gift for gifting, especially to elementary school teachers.
Wonderful book about nature’s patterns, whose simple main text would be great for preschools and primary schoolers, but with text boxes that add more detail for older readers.
Great book - this adult learned a lot from this amazing math and science book. I loved the poetry used to introduce each page. Most of the poems are very well done and would engage young readers. Each page has an informational text box explaining the pattern and relevant science and math related to the image. A reader can pick and choose which boxes to read and dive deeper into the text. Some support may be needed to elaborate on text but most 2nd grade and up will understand the book. The pictures are very good stock images. I would have liked an additional image on some pages. The leaf vein page discussed fruit tree leaves with an image and corn leaves are mentioned but was not pictured. The sand dune page mentions a crescent & pyramid shape but these shapes are not included explicitly. There is enough unused space to add additional support images. The back matter is very helpful. I loved the questions and activity suggestions. I can create lessons for math, science, and language arts from this book. Additional reading recommendations are provided and gave this librarian ideas for book pairings and displays. A glossary is also included. Great book for patterns, poetry, science, nature, and math readers in elementary school.
Like a friend eager to share a treasure-finding, Lisa Varchol Perron’s PATTERNS EVERYWHERE whisks the reader away on a spectacular tour of our gloriously patterned world. From vast mountain valleys and majestic ridges to the delicate and exquisite beauty of a single spiraled seashell, this non-fiction picture book inspires wonder and awe in the youngest of readers as well as adults. With sensory, musical language and simple, satisfying rhyme structure, readers are immersed with both the patterns in nature as well as the patterns found in the text in the pages of the book. I can think of no better book to introduce and discuss patterns in the classroom! With stunning photos and fascinating nuggets of information delivered through sidebars (explaining concepts like “venation- the process whereby leaves “vein or “branch, or the fact of hexagons being so common in nature because of their ability to fit tightly together thereby maximizing space), this fascinating book is bursting with information and sure to spark awe for the incredible natural world all around us!
When I heard this book title announced, I was so excited because it sounded like a perfect fit for my outdoor education classes. After reading the book, I can confirm that this book is a lovely introduction to patterns all around us in the natural world. The photos are stunning, and the words pack a poetic pizazz punch with alliteration, rhyme, and a magnetic lyricism. Along with the poetic descriptions, the featured patterns display easily accessible scientific explanations about these marvelous repeating wonders found in desert, ocean, leaf, shell, and other nature spots. As a teacher, I especially appreciate the back matter with teaching ideas and questions to use for further discovery. I will definitely be using this book with my Forest Kindergarten class as well as my Advanced Nature Study class for ages 6-12. I really like that this book can appeal to such a wide age range.
Patterns Everywhere by Lisa Varchol Perron is a preschooler’s introduction to patterns in nature. One of the best parts of this book are the photographs showing the patterns along with the easy to understand descriptions. The book is written in a rhyming pattern too.
Since it is an introduction book to pattern found in nature it is by no means an exhaustive look at the types of patterns one can find. However, it covers the easier found one in an interesting way, encouraging young children to search these patterns out in their own outdoor explorations.
Most children love nature so this would be a perfect non-fiction read, encouraging them to look closer at the world around them.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
What a combo! Contemplative (not to mention pitch-perfect) verse, precise and accessible sidebars, stunning photographs, and eye-catching design (the colours!) come together In Lisa Varchol Perron’s book to showcase the wonder of patterns in nature—and it’s a testament to the mastery of this book that each component is as perfectly executed and engaging as the next. I could see myself spending hours with this book, reading it again and again and again, focusing on just one thing or the other, or taking the experience as a whole—which is to say, I can’t imagine a better way to engage any curious mind on this fascinating topic.
Patterns Everywhere effectively pairs rhyming text about a variety of patterns found in nature with gorgeous photographs that provide readers with a concrete example of the type of pattern described in the text. A text box on each page gives further information on the type of pattern, including the forces in nature that create the pattern. The activities provided at the end of the book encourage further learning and engagement. In addition to encouraging exploration and interest in the natural world for young readers, this title will be a useful addition to support early grade content instruction on landforms.
Wow! This book is just beautiful. Lisa Varchol Perron's lovely rhyming text is complemented by stunning photography and boxes of fascinating facts about patterns in nature, finding beauty in everything from leaf veins to colorful corals, snowflakes and even mud cracks! I read this book with my 6-year-old daughter and she has been inspired to search for patterns in things she encounters at school, and on our family walks. This is a must-have on every nonfiction bookshelf!
The gorgeous and descriptive lyrical language in this book is matched perfectly with the beautiful photographs of patterns in nature. Side bars give further information on where, why, and how these patterns exist in our world and extensive back matter with activities, a glossary and suggestions for further reading make this a perfect book for teachers and a fabulous addition to the home library of every curious child.
Stunningly beautiful and informative! Lisa Varchol Perron has combined masterful poetry with fascinating facts and gorgeous photos to create something truly unique. I can imagine future scientists pointing to this book as what first piqued their interest in the natural world. A great addition to any home or classroom!
Perfect for classroom libraries, nature lovers, and coffee tables! Everyone will find something interesting and beautiful among the pages. The rhyming text paired with the beautiful images and the non-fiction facts will teach the reader something new about our everyday life. Deeper observations and a new outlook on the world around will definitely be a result after reading Patterns Everywhere!
There are so many things packed in this picture book: the short rhyming text is great for little readers, a refrain throughout with a slight change on each spread, the additional facts as side bars are rich with additional information for older readers, and the pictures are extraordinary with the high quality imaging that is detailed and colors that are bright and bold.
TBH, the cover does not do this book justice, which is a shame. I loved the simple poems mixed with facts. Nice photographs and interesting information. My 7 year old and I really enjoyed this. My main critique is that I wish there was source info for the photographs. I really would’ve liked to know where the pictures were taken.
I definitely learned a few things reading this as an adult! I enjoyed the way this book not only celebrates nature's beautiful patterns (in rhyme) but also clearly explains some of the "whys" and "hows" behind them. Great find for math and nature lovers.
This educational book is a great way to introduce patterns to children. Each spread is illustrated with a photo(s) and is accompanied by a short poem and information about what's going on in the pictures to create the unique patterns.
I really love finding picture book that teachers can use in the classroom. Excellent photography that can be used to illustrate text features in ELA. The patterns in nature can also inspire math conversations or scientific exploration.
A great STEM book about how you can find patterns all around you in nature! The end of the book has an activity you can do. And there are a few neat things about patterns listed as well. Check out the further reading and websites that can provide more to learn about!
Not sure what I was looking for with this book but for what it was it was rather decent and at times pretty clever.
The book Patterns Everywhere basically explores with the reader different patterns that they may find in nature venation, geographical formations, creatures/plants, snowflakes or even the foam in the bubbles. As a result the book is rather quite wide-ranging even for its small size. And as a result I did learn a few things that I would say I hadn't known before.
Unfortunately, though, I wasn't quite a fan of the presentation. The text was split up in its formations with the introductory information being sparsely presented in stanza format that rhymed. This was then followed by a data box that provided the reader with an even more in-depth look at what was actually occurring on the pages, which I thought was more interesting than the attempt at poetry.
The rest of the book is provided with brightly colored photographs that helps the reader to catch the patterns of nature right where they can see it. The only picture that confused me with its inclusion was the one at the beginning in which the sun basically blinds the reader and makes the details a bit on the vague side to look at so was it actually meant to mimick a reader stepping outside into the daylight after their eyes have been acclimated to the light from within?
Otherwise there are also some included activities in the back for readers who may need want something more to do. As a starter book this book does have its merits but the best way to read it will be just to pick which narrative format suits you best then coming back to read the rest of it if you should want to get to know more.
**I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**
Patterns Everywhere is a children's nature book. It has beautiful photographs to illustrate many different types of patterns found in our world, from ripples in sand, coral formations, ocean foam, and rock layers to snowflakes and mud cracks. The book is geared toward younger elementary students. The ideas are simple and clear. Some more difficult words are used but are explained in the text or the glossary at the back of the book. I think this is a wonderful way to expand the reading levels, making the book more interesting for advanced readers as well as explaining things for younger readers who want to learn more. I believe books of this type encourage parents to learn more so they can explain or elaborate on ideas to their children, or better yet, learn along with them. The book is designed to make children more observant, finding patterns of their own in the world around them. It is a wonderful idea and the book is beautifully put together. Lisa Varchol Perron wears many hats - wife, parent, nature lover, psychotherapist with specialized training in child and adolescent development - but has loved writing since she was a child (her first elementary school story was Wilma the Washing Machine) and has recently decided to share that love with a career as a published author. My opinion is that she is uniquely qualified for this role, not the least because she remembers the joys of a childhood spent outdoors, being active and reading. I hope we see more of this type of book from Ms. Varchol Perron. Thank you to NetGalley and Millbrook Press for the ARC.
This wonderful combination of poetry and science puts nature’s propensity for pattern on full display! Rhyming quatrains introduce each spread with a lyrical invitation to discover a different shape or design grounded in mathematics. A prose paragraph then describes a specific part of nature where readers can explore this particular phenomenon. Each example is illustrated with lush photographs, ranging from detailed close-ups to vast panoramas. The “usual suspects, including snowflakes and shell spirals are represented, but author Lisa Varchol Perron goes far beyond these to introduce patterns of wave ripples, leaf veins, canyon strata and so much more. A fascinating resource for math, art, and science teachers, as well as for anyone who appreciates (or wishes to foster the appreciation of) the intersection of art, nature, and mathematics. A STEM gem!
I love a picture book that also teaches me something new! How many times have I observed sea foam without knowing exactly what it was? This book is not only gorgeous, it is packed full of facts about patterns in nature. After reading Patterns Everywhere, I hiked with my family through a forest and along a beach. I found myself looking for patterns and pointing them out to my kids. The poetry in this book is so lovely and I found myself holding space with each one before diving in to the informative sidebars. Before even getting to the back matter I was thinking of all the ways this could be used in the classroom and with my own children. Patterns Everywhere has it all - poetry, math, science, nature, art, a true STEAM pick. I loved it!
This book is such a delight! Beautiful poetry paired with gorgeous photographs, and interesting facts about patterns, patterns, everywhere—what's not to love? I can't wait to share this book with my boys, especially my 10 year old who loves to draw patterns and memorize facts. My favorite spread shows a close up of sea foam, of which I never before gave a second thought, but I will never look at the same way again. In fact, this book has opened my eyes to looking for patterns all around me, something I rarely did, but look forward to doing now!
