Advent 2022: Joy of Every Longing Heart

Rate this book
“Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free.
These words from a beloved hymn capture the heart of Advent: longing, waiting, expectation. From the very beginning, Scripture builds our anticipation of our Savior—God Himself—who would dwell among His people and set them free from sin and death. In this five-week Advent experience we will celebrate Jesus’s first coming as the baby born in Bethlehem and anticipate His second as the glorious King over all.

This Study Book features daily Scripture reading that follows the themes found in each lyric of “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus. It is also filled with thoughtful features designed to help you engage as people in waiting, including daily reflection prompts, recipes, crafts, Christmas hymns, and more! Join us this Advent as we celebrate and contemplate Jesus, the One who has come and will come again.

She Reads Truth is a worldwide community of women who read God's Word together every day. Founded in 2012, She Reads Truth invites women of all ages to engage Scripture through curated daily reading plans, as well as online conversation led by a vibrant community of contributing writers. This community of “Women in the Word of God every day represents a long list of cities and countries, a variety of backgrounds and traditions, and countless real-life stories. But there is a commonality that binds us: we believe God's Word is Truth. So we read. Every day we read a new passage together—working our way through books of the Bible, topics that matter, and seasons of the Church calendar. We engage with God's Word and with each other. And we keep coming back, on the hard days and the good days, because God and His Word never change, regardless of our circumstances.

This is my second time doing this study, this time with all of the scripture references. Absolutely beautiful. It walks through the hymn “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus verse by verse and pairs it with rich scripture.

The continued question throughout “What are you longing for?. The advent points back time and time again. Jesus is the fulfillment of our longing. He was born to set us free. Born to deliver us. He alone is the joy of EVERY longing heart.

Found myself humming this hymn and meditating on its verses throughout the holiday season. Where it can feel hard to focus on anything substantial amidst the hustle and bustle. Practical, scripture-rich, and hits at the heart. Would recommend to anyone looking for an advent.

Side note: I bought the online version $3 through the app, printed off the hymn, took notes and followed along in my Bible.

This was technically an advent study, but since it already ended after New Year’s, I didn’t sweat catching up when I got off track. I love advent studies, because the incarnation means so much to me these days. In a season where I am often longing for something: sleep, peace, food, quiet, purpose; this was such a good reminder that Jesus fills all my longing, and all humanity’s longing.

The study went through Come Thou Long Expected Jesus with scripture selections for each verse. I liked how there was a bit of guidance, but not too much. It’s not homework, it’s just scripture. There were guidelines of what to underline and pay attention to during the reading, space for notes, and one question about the reading to answer. The art was beautiful, reminded me of rifle paper co illustrations and colors! I didn’t do any of the recipes or crafts but I loved that they were there!

Excellent Advent study. Loved it!

"Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus" is one of my favorite Christmas hymns/carols, so I had high expectations going in, and was not disappointed. I really enjoyed spending the Advent season walking through both it and Scripture, reading familiar words with fresh eyes. Powerful.

I love SRT advent and Lenten books, and look forward to them every year. They always use a hymn for advent, but this year, they went line by line through the hymn and linked each to scriptures. It was so good. I have really loved this since they added the podcast.

As always, I loved She Reads Truth’s advent study this year! The artwork was fun and beautiful. The organization based on hymn lyrics was unique, and it presented a full view of the gospel narrative. I also appreciated the guided annotation and journaling prompts each day as well as the “for the record sections that encouraged documentation and reflection. It might have been my favorite advent study to date!

She Reads Truth does it again! Another advent study that succeeded in helping me ponder the sparkly Christmas season in my time with God. I think this study was the first time I realized how well Christmas time can point to Christ’s Advent - the joy and light reminds me of all the blessing and joy brought in His first coming, while the tension and lack that sticks out oddly more in all the festivities than in “regular season reminds me of the longing and hope and need for His second coming. Really enjoyed this and will continue to think about what was brought up in its pages!

Very beautifully done devotional book. Love that the scriptures tied into the lyric of “come thou long expected Jesus we were on each day. My one qualm is the writing prompts there were only a few days out of the advent season that I felt the prompts made sense and tied with the reading. Loved that this devotional book got me in the Word of God!

As always, these are so fun and extremely festive. They’ve become an Advent tradition but I’m still always left a little lacking in the DEPTH. I think it’s the summary questions because scripture is always filled with so much - I just never connect with them? Or are confused as to how they connect with the passages read? It’s always a little disappointing.

But SO fun!
I wish it could be a five star experience soo bad.

So many things to love about this devotional. I love how rooted in scripture it is. And while you read many of the same passages in their devotionals each Advent, using a Christmas carol to thread the passages together brings a delightful freshness. also here for the aesthetics and recipes (I made the Italian sausage, kale, and gnocchi soup recipe 4+ times this December)!

Come Thou Unexpected Jesus has been a hymn I’ve sung since childhood. This study took it line by line to explore its theology. From Old Testament reading showing God said or God promised linked to New Testament showing how God did. The final lines of the hymn remind the Christian that we are in our own Advent waiting/ longing for Christ’s return. This was a sweet reminder that God will complete the prophesies, the promises He made on the day of His choosing. I loved this study.

This was my first She Reads Truth study book, and I really enjoyed it. The book itself was beautiful and I really appreciated how they laid out the scripture readings for each day following the outline of ancient Advent hymns.

🎵Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.🎵

This has been such a sweet study to dive into- this Advent season has felt more intentional than it ever has, and though it was busy, this sense of calm & peace seems so be some of the most prominent feelings for me. I'm grateful to have spent each day learning & resting in Jesus!

In this 5 week devotional take a journey through the hymn Come, thou long expected Jesus. Each day you’ll meditate on a section of the hymn and read scripture that probably inspired the song. What a perfect hymn to prepare for advent and a creative way too!

These seasonal studies are definitely my favourite kind of SRT. Having a full page to reflect each day was sometimes too much, but I found the daily questions helpful prompts throughout the Advent season to consider my longings and be reminded of how Jesus has come and will come again.

Loved having this resource to help me be in the word and think on Jesus this Advent. Each day of the study followed a line from “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, included straight Scripture to read from the CSB that highlighted the theme from that line, and then provided space to journal. Simple and refreshing
