Pretty, single, 24-year-old Veronika decides to die for two reasons, both of them phony: one, because she realizes she will one day be old; and two, because a lot of things are wrong in this world. She then takes a lot of sleeping pills. While waiting to die, as if she's waiting for her cat to finish drinking its milk, Veronika decides to read a magazine and then write to the editor of that magazine. Which made the scene cartoonish.
This rare combination of phoniness and cartoonishness gelled and gave birth to this masterpiece. A masterpiece of nothingness, like a gigantic void proud of its vast emptiness. Paolo Coelho is like a god, not only to those who worship him, for he has created something out of nothing using the time-tested way of hoodwinking morons who read books like this: sprinkling lots of amphibologies and gobbledygooks to a plotless tale of nonsense. Gripping their highlighters, these morons would then make passages like this shine in neon, marvel at how deep they are, and then give the book a 5-star rating at goodreads.com--
"We all live in our own world. But if you look up at the starry sky, you'll see that all the different worlds up there combine to form constellations, solar systems, galaxies." (p.162).
He could have added: If you feel all alone in this big, wide world as if you carry the weight of all the sadness there is, then look up at the starry, starry sky during a starry, starry night and realize that there are aliens living in all those other planets who, in their solitude, likewise pine for the worlds they cannot see.
Damn, I sure do sound better than Coelho!

Madness is wanting to be normal.
There is something very wrong with the world. Veronika wants to die. And she can certainly try, but she can also, certainly, fail. Committed to an insane asylum, she may actually find sanity in the craziest places of all.
Unfortunately, I cannot really go into much detail without spoiling much of the book's content, so I'm just going to say that those few who decide to read it may find in it a beautiful profoundly moving story, about life, and death.
Veronika is one of those characters that, despite all circumstances, you cannot but find her tragically adorable.
This is one of those 'love it or hate it' books, so you are probably going to love it plainly, or hate it deeply. You can tell which side the coin toss landed for me.

Locura es querer ser normal.
Hay algo muy mal en el mundo. Veronika quiere morir. Y ciertamente lo puede intentar, pero tambi茅n puede, ciertamente, fallar. Confinada a un manicomio, puede que halle la cordura en el lugar m谩s loco de todos.
Desafortunadamente, no puedo entrar en mucho detalle sin arriesgarme a arruinar mucho del contenido del libro, as铆 que s贸lo voy a decir que aquellos pocos que decidan leerlo puede que encuentren en 茅l una hermosa y profundamente conmovedora historia, sobre la vida, y la muerte.
Veronika es uno de esos personajes que, a fuerzas de las circunstancias, uno no puede evitar encontrarla tr谩gicamente adorable.
Este es uno de esos libros de '谩malo o 贸dialo', as铆 que probablemente vas a amarlo plenamente, u odiarlo ferveramente. Pod茅s adivinar de qu茅 lado cay贸 la moneda en mi caso.

Fantastic read! Awesome! I could not put the book down!
鈥淰eronika Decides to Die鈥� 鈥� just read the title again鈥�.decides to die鈥�
How many times have you said to yourself, at least I have, 鈥淎hh鈥 don鈥檛 care, I don鈥檛 really want to live anymore鈥�, without even thinking about the meaning of it.
So Veronika said the same thing and decided to do something about it. Why?
Nothing bad had happened to Veronika, she was beautiful, had a regular life鈥ery ordinary though ... but normal
She decided that it was not exciting enough, and decided to die!
But her suicide attempt didn鈥檛 succeed and she ended up in the mental hospital. The pills ruined her heart and she had one more week to live before she dies 鈥� or so she was told.
"An awareness of death encourages us to live more intensely." Having only week to live, Veronika re-discovers herself sexually and emotionally, falls in love, and starts having this eagerness to live.
In addition, her suicide touched lives of other people in the mental hospital, who started cherish every day of their lives.
"Basically everything that happens in our life is our fault, and our fault alone."
So when the next time you say to yourself, 鈥淎hh鈥 don鈥檛 care, I don鈥檛 really want to live anymore鈥� - think twice.
2014 Update:
I re-read this book this year for my book club... 6 years since I read it first. I agree with all points after my first read but want to add some additional points on issues that Coelho discusses:
- Conformity, society norms and its danger
- Madness/insanity and what they really mean within the chains of society norms; how society norms varies from culture to culture, and how personal individuality can be affected by these 鈥渘orms鈥�
- Death and life and how knowing that death is imminent changes your perception of life: you start appreciating every moment and allow yourself to express yourself
- The book discusses other characters, Mari, Zedka, and Eduard. They were hiding inside the walls of Vilette because they were trying to escape the real world due to similar reasons related to to not being understood by their families and society. Vilette鈥檚 environment created a shield from the real world, 鈥渟ociety鈥�, and allowed these 鈥渋nsane鈥� people to express themselves and behave the way they want without criticism. At the end鈥� Veronika鈥檚 suicide affects them profoundly awakening in them a desire to live outside of Vilette鈥檚 walls and also making them to realize that Vilette is just another form of controlled society with its own rules and acceptance. And that at the end the true happiness lies in our own desire and believe, in our own acceptance and willingness to remove any boundaries and allow ourselves to live to the fullest, and be happy!

Veronika Decides to Die, is a novel by Paulo Coelho. It tells the story of 24-year-old Slovenian Veronika, who appears to have everything in life going for her, but who decides to kill herself.
While she waits to die, she cancels the suicide letter she starts to her parents while suddenly provoked by a magazine article.
The magazine article wittily asks "Where is Slovenia?", so she writes a letter to the press justifying her suicide, the idea is to make the press believe that she has killed herself because people don't even know where Slovenia is.
Her plan fails and she wakes up from the coma in Villette, a mental hospital in Slovenia, where she is told she has only a few days to live due to heart condition caused by the overdose.
Her presence there affects all of the mental hospital's patients, especially Zedka, who has clinical depression; Mari, who has panic attacks; and Eduard, who has schizophrenia, and with whom Veronika falls in love.
During her internment in Villette she realizes that she has nothing to lose and can, therefore, do what she wants, say what she wants and be who she wants without having to worry about what others think of her; as a mental patient, she is unlikely to be criticized.

Veronika is a 24 year old Slovenian woman who one day decides to kill herself, apparently because (1) "everything in her life was the same and, once her youth was gone, it would be downhill all the way" and (2) everything is wrong with the world and she feels powerless to make things right. After she takes an overdose of sleeping pills, Veronika wakes up in a mental asylum and the remainder of the book is, basically, a series of interactions between Veronika and a number of the inhabitants of the asylum, including a young schizophrenic named Eduard, who mainly stands around mutely and masturbates while Veronika plays the piano. Veronika (what else!) inexplicably falls in love with him, after she similarly inexplicably regains her joie de vivre.
I suppose, that tells you pretty much everything you need to know about Veronika, and certainly Coelho does not add much else in terms of characterisation. Some reviewers have pointed out that to create realistic characters or believable plot is not the point of this book and certainly not Coelho's intention. I guess one really has no choice but to agree with this as it is patently obvious that this is not so much a book as a meditation on insanity with characters and plot which are merely vehicles to convey the author's thoughts on the subject and encourage the reader to reflect on the same and to explore how they may feel/behave/think in similar circumstances.
Paulo Coelho himself makes a brief and pointless appearance at the beginning of the book to tell you that it is based on his own experiences as a mental patient and proceeds to bash you over the head with his message, which is that everyone is crazy, insanity and genius are two sides of the same coin and we should all let our inner freak out and stop trying to conform.
As a reader, I find this approach supremely unsatisfactory. For some reason, I tend to be much more receptive to the message when I can actually bring myself to care about the story or the characters, however unsympathetic they may be. I am sometimes able to forgive lack of plot or character development if the book is particularly informative or beautifully written or manages to turn me on or makes me think about a subject in a new and interesting way. Unfortunately, this book did none of that. Veronika fails even as a placeholder because her actions are so absurd and incomprehensible that I was completely unable to relate to them or to put myself in her shoes. So all that was left was the message and I had absolutely no patience for Coelho's particular brand of preachy self-help pop-psychology.

this shitty, whiny book in a nutshell, which is all it deserves: a simple, trite, self-indulgent allegory that poorly contemplates the similarities between genius and insanity
i think this is the worst passage i've read so far:
if you are filled with the incomprehensible rage that follows after utter dullness like this, we will probably make good friends.
so i actually finished this, and guess what! it was consistently awful. entirely insipid with a delightful dose of misogyny--outside of the entire premise of the book, a young woman just "deciding" to kill herself basically because she's bored; apparently veronika only discovers life is worth living after meeting a boring artist dude & and (spoiler ahead) it turns out her male doctor was drugging her with a medicine that mimics heart attacks solely so she could discover how important life is worth living. what??? in no way is this examined for how fucked up it is and we're supposed to just sit back and enjoy the shitty advice on how to live life that's being spewed. i probably would have enjoyed this when i was fifteen and didn't know any better, but i'm an adult human with critical thinking skills. i am not impressed with contrived, falsely "deep" drivel. y'all shouldn't be either.

It's when Slovenia was on the sidelines whilst the Balkan Wars were causing carnage; Veronika, who has everything ... decides to die. She takes pills, only to awaken in a mental institution, to be told that she'll still die, but in over a week or so!
Coelho's experience with mental health services influenced his writing of this thought provoking book. The book has numerous challenging the status quo views on mental illness that may be triggering for some... I found them interesting and intriguing.

Let's rephrase. "鈥淭he two hardest tests on the Coelho humbug reading journey are the patience to wait for the right moment (which never comes) and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter (on that road to nowhere by the way of nonsense).鈥�
I confidently stated once that I had only read two books by Coelho, the first being an innocent accident (who could have imagined that The Alchemist could be that bad?) and the second a concession to my disbelief that the first could really be as bad as that. I had to try another one to make sure the incompatibility of Coelho's thinking and mine was truly authentic and irreparable. I chose 11 minutes and it took me no longer to know we had to part.
Guess my shock when I found this book on the top of a shelf and was about to throw it away and skimmed through it and realised I recognised enough of its content to know the horrible truth: I have read three Coelho books! Three! Imagine the other books that I did NOT spend that reading time with, that may now remain unread because I spent valuable minutes and (oh horror!) hours reading THREE books of utter nonsense - and as far as I recall without external force of any kind? I can't really call it FORCE MAJEURE or anything as forgiving as that.
What if I never get to read all books by Forster, Woolf, Dickens, Grass, Stendhal, Zola or Jamaica Kincaid or ... or ... or... What if some of those wonderful books I have in my bookshelf remain unread forever while I have THREE Coelhos in my mental library?
I am a teacher and I am good at explaining the importance of focus, priority and choice to my students. If you choose to spend time on this, something else won't happen. Think first, act wisely, use your time to add value to your life!
I am quite a Veronika, come to think of it. I have it all and then I end up reading Paulo Coelho. Really, if you think I am exaggerating the misery of this, just read the first page and gasp (BUT don't say I RECOMMENDED it to you, that would be adding shame to misery if I made people read this too!).
Veronika is so privileged and lucky, she decides it is time to commit suicide (thus we are introduced to a meaningful plot in the first sentence). The second paragraph drifts off on a riff about Veronika having met the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho and how she starts being interested in Computer Science because of this, reading a magazine and digging deeper into it while she prepares for her suicide. Right? Because that's what we do while we plan to kill our fictional selves? We get interested in our "creators", who invade not only the novel, but also the mind of the suicidal yet unfocused protagonist... And of course our creator has some meaningful reflections to quote from the fictional magazine while the pills dissolve in Veronika's stomach (as we are kindly informed, but that's not the reason for her passive interest in computer science - she is passive by nature, hence the unmotivated suicide!?). "Where is Slovenia?" Right. That's the question I would raise while randomly reading a science magazine, waiting to die. And then ...
Enough said. I recant my reading of three Coelhos. Is there any redemption or will the entire universe conspire to punish me for my lack of taste?

2 bemused yes bemused stars !
Veronika has a mild personality disorder and attempts a serious suicide attempt. She is placed in a private psych. hospital in the capital of Slovenia. She is beautiful and artistic and hypersexual and "special" (I suspect that this is the way Mr. Coelho views himself as well)
Through pretentious and contrived conversations and situations filled with half-facts, pseudo-wisdom and a whole lot of malarkey she is cured. This is not a novel but rather a vehicle for Mr. Coelho to brand his own personal philosophies to the masses. (almost like propaganda)
This book elicited a bemused response from me at this age so I decided to imagine what Jaidee at other ages would have thought and felt about this book.
Jaidee at 14 - 1 star- "really weird and kind of boring"
Jaidee at 19 - 3 stars- "Wow that Veronika is one cool and sexi chick."
Jaidee at 23 - 3.5 stars- "Poor Veronika -she is so misunderstood another victim of patriarchy"
Jaidee at 28 - 4 stars - "Wow there is some pretty cool stuff in this book...very deep"
Jaidee at 37 - barely half a star- " what a bunch of ridiculous bs"

The best way to describe this book is: it makes no sense whatsoever. Of course, you may say: "Well, Xandra, Paulo Coelho is a profound man, a philosopher. Not everyone gets him."

Veronika is a young Slovenian woman who decides to kill herself because her youth is almost gone and the world is a fucked up place. What? Yes, she is Slovenian. What do you mean why? I don't know why! I guess it's more exotic this way. Shut up!
Ugh, I'm talking to myself again. Paulo Coelho is driving me nuts!
So, yeah, she overdoses on sleeping pills, but, unfortunately for us all , she doesn't end up six feet underground, but in a mental institution where she is told she only has one week to live. I actually laughed out loud at that. Who wouldn't?
You then follow her interactions with a bunch of uninteresting characters, a schizophrenic guy named Eduard being one of them. Actually, no. I'm not fair. Eduard is not a totally uninteresting guy. He's a little kinky and funny and creepy because he likes watching Veronika masturbate while she plays the piano. Didn't see that coming. I mean, Eduard never talks, he's basically a recluse, but after this scene these two weirdos inexplicably fall in love.
And this isn't even the best part. The best part is the ending.
Great stuff. I'm waiting for "Veronika Decides to Die - a graphic novel".

Veronika, an attractive 24-year-old woman living in Ljubljana, Slovenia, has loving parents, an okay job, decent boyfriends, and so on. However she's tired of her routine life and tries to commit suicide. Veronika's attempt fails and she wakes up in Villete, a local mental hospital.
There Veronika is told that her suicide attempt has severely damaged her heart and she has about a week to live.
Liberated from worries about going on with life - and learning that mental patients are free to exhibit any behavior they like - Veronika decides to interact with some fellow patients. She befriends Mari, who has panic attacks; Zedka, who is depressed; and Eduard, a catatonic schizophrenic who seems to enjoy Veronika's piano playing.
Meanwhile, Dr. Igor, the head psychiatrist, studies Veronika and the other patients at Villete to test his theory that a body substance called "vitriol" causes mental illness.
By the end of the book Veronika's presence at Villete causes many of the patients to change their attitudes about their own mental illness as well as how they want to live their lives.
The book seems to accurately describe the behavior of some mentally ill people but I thought the depiction of the patients was generally superficial and provided little insight into true mental disorders. However some of the characters are interesting and the story is okay.
I'd mildly recommend the book to readers interested in mental health.

For people who are concerned only superficially with the subject complex, the book is perhaps quite suitable.
I found it very terrible and failed, especially in face of the fact that the approach could have a lot of potential, but this novel was not for me.

This was really the worst book I've ever read. I don't know if it's a problem in the translation or not, but as much as I WANTED to like this book I just couldn't make myself. I got about 60 pages away from the end before I realized that I didn't care about any of the characters and just wanted Veronika to die and get it over with.
I think the worst part for me is that the author chose to write the second chapter about himself. Generally speaking, I think it's admirable that he wanted to protect his parents by not writing about his own institutionalization, but making himself a character in the novel and explaining his reasons for writing the book rather defeated the purpose. It also took me right out of the novel and made it impossible for me to get back into it.

Divided into 27 unnamed chapters, this book talks about Veronica, someone who has got everything in her life that noth8ng matters to her anymore.
She thinks she has got everything what a human needs to be happy and gets tired of a monotonous life of having everything.
She ultimately decides to end her life as she thinks there is nothing else to want or need more to live by as she already has a good job, being young & pretty, having the best boyfriend, a perfect family.
Somehow she gets saved and ends up in a hospital ward to recover after having spent 5 days in the ICU.
The story begins after this. She feels like a new being, having liberated from a world of glam & competition.

Uno de los pocos libros de Coelho que salvar铆a de la quema, y la verdad es que no recuerdo por qu茅.
Prefiero quedarme con la duda, ya que, si lo leyese en este momento, seguramente mi calificaci贸n se reducir铆a. Posiblemente, porque este tipo de lecturas agot贸 mi paciencia. Afortunadamente, es corto y se puede leer en clave de f谩bula. Pero a este autor le har铆a falta una buena renovaci贸n, aunque, si vende tanto, es porque le va bien con su estilo, que se repite obra tras obra. Pues que siga. A m铆, despu茅s de "El alquimista" y de "A la sombra del r铆o Piedra" ya no me ha vuelto a convencer.

鈥楾here was nothing a doctor dreaded more than getting complaints from the families of patients who had been in Villete, which was what nearly always happened, for it was rare for a patient to readjust successfully to normal life after a period spent in a mental hospital.
It wasn鈥檛 the fault of the hospital, or of any of the hospitals scattered around the world; the problem of readjustment was exactly the same everywhere. Just as prison never corrects the prisoner鈥攊t only teaches him to commit more crimes鈥攕o hospitals merely got patients used to a completely unreal world, where everything was allowed and where no one had to take responsibility for their actions.鈥�
This is my third encounter with Paulo Coelho, after and , and let鈥檚 get it out of the way, this one鈥檚 easily the best among them. The story is about a young woman who decides to commit suicide because she couldn鈥檛 get anything new out of her life that she hadn鈥檛 already, and what she goes through when she accidentally survives the attempt but is then told that she has only around five days to live because her heart has suffered irreparable damage from the overdose of sleeping pills which had induced the coma.
Well, Coelho himself is also in the story, and I wasn鈥檛 least surprised by that. From the very start when she woke up in a lunatic asylum, it became quite obvious that it was a very personal story to tell by Coelho, as I had known from his introduction of Hermann Hesse鈥檚 . Coelho himself was sent to a mental asylum (thrice) because his parents were worried about his artistic desires. So yeah, naturally he wanted to recount his experience through a novel through a fictional character (though he mentioned in a few places it鈥檚 a real story? Ah leave it that鈥檚 irrelevant).
Now it definitely has got its positive parts, but also some negatives. First of all, the editing is poor and could鈥檝e been sharper. Yes, it is more or less the length of a lengthy novella, but in terms of subject matters, it could鈥檝e been shorter and hence, concise.
Also, the translation. It鈥檚 not too bad, but given the worldwide acclaim Coelho already had before this one was translated, should've been entrusted to someone who wouldn鈥檛 have been too literal. For a supposedly heart-touching story about a girl who can鈥檛 decide whether to live or not, it鈥檚 very lifeless and can even get unsolicited factual in parts.
Now I鈥檓 not too sure about that, for I haven鈥檛 read Coelho鈥檚 original text, but somehow his story matters exuberate a very magical, sublime yet almost poetic feel. But if his writing is so matter-of-fact (and not in a Stanley Kubrick鈥檚 deliberately distant way) then the fault isn鈥檛 the translator鈥檚, of course. But as I said, I鈥檓 not sure of that.
Also, given that it鈥檚 an important 鈥榩roject鈥� for Coelho, sometimes it will feel like he didn鈥檛 care enough for the characters. Like, he just had to make up the characters for the sake of fictionalizing, because he wanted to tell his own story but couldn鈥檛 use real characters for some (obvious) reasons.
And Coelho鈥檚 major stories always have that fable-ish quality, that sets him apart, but sometimes the way it is used isn鈥檛 too intelligent. Especially the way his stories end. A bit too obvious, played a bit too safe, desperately trying to make the readers feel good (and succeeding most of the time) but leaving people like me unconvinced.
But that鈥檚 enough with the not-too-good sides. Coelho is one of those popular writers of the genre who can write a woman character without sounding pretentious. It鈥檚 known to everyone who has read , which was riskier than this one in terms of writing a non-clich茅 character. Basically, sexual exploration is a very difficult topic to handle, especially in opposite genders, countless male authors have proved that but Coelho isn鈥檛 one of them. There鈥檚 a particular instance in this story where Veronika does something that can be viewed as very questionable, almost pervert-like. It would鈥檝e been if the author had been, say, Murakami. But that doesn鈥檛 happen here.
And the thought process that goes into the characters鈥� internal monologues is equally captivating. I won鈥檛 recount any of them here because they will hamper the reading experiences for anyone new to it, but let鈥檚 say that they are the most melancholic yet somehow entertaining, ponder-worthy parts of the story.
There are several highly relevant sections on how the society deems it fit to suppress the artistic or creative tendencies of an individual and considers him or her social only when he or she lives by the set of laws created by the society, without questioning anything. And most important of all, they shouldn鈥檛 grow tired of that lifestyle, and embrace monotonicity discarding the dreams of doing something different.
鈥楥ollective madness is called sanity.鈥�
Though in matters of philosophy, the frequent mentions of Freud do sound a bit textbook-like. But Coelho has definitely tried to do something different here, and despite its flaws, it鈥檚 readable and not at all pretentious.
Who knows, if I give it a second chance someday in the distant future, it may appeal more to me.

I totally, completely and utterly fail to understand this book. However, as typically befalls me when I read a book by Paolo Coelho, I seem to recall a moment about four-fifths of the way to the end when I had an epiphanic moment - when I realised that although I had loathed the book from the start until that exact sentence, I suddenly understood it and could comprehend and possibly even accept (though grudgingly) that other people could like it and that it could possibly qualify as a Good Book.
However, in a similarly typical manner, I reached the end of the book and could not for the life of me remember anything about that epiphanic moment apart from the fact that it occurred. As such, it rates one star because it is painfully bad. Furthermore, I have yet to see or hear anything that even begins to make it clear to me why so many otherwise-sane people seem to love it so much.
I'm bored and procrastinating so want to see if anyone else can give me an answer.

The king was worried and tried to control the population by issuing a series of edicts governing security and public health. The policemen and the inspectors, however, had also drunk the poisoned water, and they thought the king鈥檚 decisions were absurd and resolved to take no notice of them.
鈥淲hen the inhabitants of the kingdom heard these decrees, they became convinced that the king had gone mad and was now giving nonsensical orders. They marched on the castle and called for his abdication.
鈥淚n despair the king prepared to step down from the throne, but the queen stopped him, saying: 鈥楲et us go and drink from the communal well. Then we will be the same as them.鈥�
鈥淎nd that was what they did: The king and the queen drank the water of madness and immediately began talking nonsense. Their subjects repented at once; now that the king was displaying such wisdom, why not allow him to continue ruling the country?

Ein kleines schmales B眉chlein,das ich sehr gern gelesen habe. Coelhos Sprache ist ganz wunderbar und ber眉hrend, ich w锟斤拷re nur gern n盲her an Veronica heran gekommen und h盲tte gern noch mehr von den anderen Nebendarstellern erfahren,aber dennoch eine absolute Leseempfehlung 馃グ馃摎
