SPIKED!

Things are confusing for Thom Wilcox and they are not getting any simpler.

Thom has lived next door to his best friend, A.J. Lopez, all his life. Ever since they were put in the same playpen as babies, they’ve spent all their time together as geeks watching Star Wars and Star Trek, reading Lord of the Rings and playing video games.

But when A.J. becomes obsessed with Major League bad-boy baseball star Jayson “Spike Tuttman, things get decidedly weird. With baseball now their major obsession, A.J. declares that his greatest desire is to meet up with his new hero.

As Thom does everything he can to make that happen, he discovers a great desire of his own he’s in love with his best friend and has to find a way to tell him.

A richly comic and heart-felt coming of age story, told by 17-year-old Thom, SPIKED! tells of his sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, adventures of discovery.

Bob Madison’s “Spiked! Is a funny, coming of age tale about main characters AJ and Thom. I found all the characters, main and peripheral, all very charming. The story is very character driven, but has some quite action-packed moments.

After meeting their idol, A.J. and Thom’s time in NY is extremely entertaining to watch unfold and memorable.

Fun and thought provoking and points, I highly recommend giving “Spiked! a read.

Funny, touching and heartwarming, 'Spiked!' by Bob Madison is a wonderfully feel-good coming of age YA novel that will leave you satisfied and wanting more. A story that starts in kindergarten and ends with leaving for college, watching best friends Thom and AJ grow up and fall in love is quietly moving and beautifully poignant. They get into all sorts of scrapes and high school shenanigans, with baseball douchebag 'Spike' Tuttman providing a delightful cameo, and the 90s references to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings complementing the narrative well. Authentic, well-drawn and witty voices tell this big-hearted tale of love, friendship and growing up. Highly recommended.

I adored the naivety that comes out in the telling of this story. The youth and growing up angle of this is portrayed brilliantly and captures your heart.
Some sentimental moments and some funny ones too. A mixed bag of emotions which makes it all the more endearing.

I've given VERY FEW 5 stars

This story deserves 6! I could not put it down. The characters and the plot are so believable and the message for teen readers is clear.
