1. Adakah agama sudah lapuk? 2. Islam dan perhambaan. 3. Islam dan sistem feudal. 4. Islam dan kapitalisma. 5. Islam dan milik peribadi. 6. Islam dan sistem kelas. 7. Islam dan zakat. 8. well i am a muslim, i know things about islam pretty well but he came up with ideas that were considered kind of new to me, like things that non muslims can use against muslims and i didnt even know about, so he discusses these things in details and convinces u in the right idea and shows u what is really meant by those sentences that are ignorantly used by non muslims to ruin the religion islam . so far its a great book and i love it
This book was first published about 60 years ago, yet it reminds us once again how important it is even these days. Islam was misunderstood throughout the ages by the westerners and in 21st century it's being repeatedly misquoted by the corrupted class of the society. The depth of the writer's intellectual capability was so hight that he instantly recognized such ill intention of the people dacades ago and then successfully potrayed the beauty of Islam in a manner that a person with minimum common sense can't deny. The book tells us why Islam is the best way of life, the God gifted religion on earth and how other world views are inconsistence regardless class or society.
Title: Islam The Misunderstood Religion Author: Muhammad Qutb Reviewer: Bashir Abubakar Content: Introduction -Plot -Critique -Verdict
Introduction
Within the political, economical and social factors, Islam has dominated it with different kind of headlines from different point of views. Vast majority in the western world (Europe and America) don't know the mission and vision of Islam, Some of them are thinking that not only Islam, all religions need to be abolish, because it's the main problem of the world which the author of this book argue that "...it's religion and religion alone that can restore to the world of humanity peace and tranquility." And Islam is the answer, which I'm very sure many people will ask 'why and how can can the religion will does that and why Islam? So let us sip from the thought of Muhammad Qutb The author himself.
Plot
Many people don't know what Islam mean, this is why they defined Islam with their own words from their mind. But in the words of Muhammad Qutb "Islam, in a word, means liberation from all sorts of slavery such as may inhibit the progress of humanity or may not allow it to follow the path of virtue and goodness. It means man's freedom from dictators who enslave him by force or fear, make him do what is wrong and deprive him of his dignity, honor, property or even life. Islam liberates him from such tyranny by telling him that all authority vests in God and God alone; He alone is the Real Sovereign. All men are His born subjects and, as such, He alone controls their destinies, none of them having the power to benefit aught or even avert any distress from his own self contrary to or independent of His Divine Will. All men shall be presented before Him on the Day of Judgment to account for their performance in this life. Thus Islam brings to man freedom from fear or oppression inflicted on him by men like himself who are in reality as helpless as he, and who are no less subject to the Dominant Will of God Almighty than he himself is. Not only this. Islam means freedom from lust as well, including even the lust for life,
Unfortunately, some people are thinking that humanity don't need Islam at the moment, some are thinking it's an old fashion. So if Islam is an old fashion, what's new fashion? Don't tell me western civilization because historically the modem European civilization is the descendant of the ancient Grecian civilization bequeathed to modern Europe by the Roman Empire. In this Grecian civilization the relations of man to his gods were viewed as of mutual antagonism and active antipathy. Thus the mysteries that human endeavor lays bare or the good things that he happens to lay his hands on in this world were viewed as something he forcibly wrenches from these jealous but ineffectual gods, who would ban and take back all these if they could. Viewed in this light, the scientific achievements of man were just another name for his conquests that he won against his gods with a vengeance as they did not allow these willingly but only grudgingly.
Some people especially the western world said "if Islam really concern of humanity, why can't it abolish "slavery"? Yes, Islam do not abolish slavery with direct words and manner the way it abolished adultery, drinking of alcahol and other wrong doing, but no any other religion or organization done what Islam done to a slave. Islam never allow the recruitment of slaves "...and afterwards either set them free as favour or let them ransom themselves until the war lays down its weapons." Q47:4 that's "al-itq and mukatabah" and in Q4:25 and Q4:92 show how important slaves wore amongst humans. According to Qutb "there's no difference between slaves and masters as for their right as human beings are concerned. And if the Muslims held prisoners of war in slavery it was purely an act of policy dictated by the force of circumstances, it doesn't form intrinsic principle of the Islamic law."
Another thing that be at the forefront in discussing Islam is the perspective of women in Islam. Pro-women's freedom always think/believe that Islam recognized women as second class humans. Throwing many undigested questions to Islam, so Qutb response in such way "after acknowledging a perfectly equal status as human being for both treating them as equals, entitled to equal right, Islam does however differentiate between man and woman with regard to their primary functions in life."
A man asked a Prophet peace be upon Him "Who has the first claim to my good treatment?" he said "your mother", The man said "And then who?" the Prophet said: "Then your mother." The mall asked: "And then?" Again; the Prophet replied: "Then your mother!鈥 The man once again asked: 鈥淎nd then?" The Prophet said: "Then your father鈥 (Muslim and Bukhari). So why fathers do not agitate too? Yet again, Islam occupied a unique position in that it recognized an independent economic status of women and enjoy it in her own right without any intermediary." Q4:19 also said "Best amongst you is he who is good to his wife" and the Prophet peace be upon Him said "to judge a man, is his behavior towards his wife"
About freedom of thought and concept of punishment; Some people say, "Can we apply today the same barbarous punishments which were applied long ago in the desert? Is it permissible to cut a thief's hand for five shillings? Could such things take place in the twentieth century, which regards the criminal as the victim of society and maintains that he is entitled to medical treatment rather than punishment?" How is it that the twentieth century permits the slaughter of forty thousand innocent people in North Africa but forbids the rightful punishment of one single criminal.
In Islam; Crime is regarded as an individual aggression against the community. That is why the concept of crime and punishment is closely connected with a nation's concept of the individual-community relationship. Islam never prescribes punishments haphazardly or does it execute these without due consideration. In this respect Islam has a unique theory which combines the best of both worlds: the communist as well as the individualistic theories. Islam holds the balance of justice in the right manner and insists on examining all conditions and circumstances connected with the offence. On studying a crime Islam takes into account two considerations at the same time; the viewpoint of the criminal and that of the community against which aggression took place. In the light of such considerations Islam prescribes the fair punishment which is in accordance with the dictates of sound logic and wise reasoning and which must not be affected by delinquent theories and national or individual whims. Islam imposes preventive punishments which may appear cruel or coarse if viewed superficially or without proper consideration. But Islam does not execute such punishments unless it ascertains that the crime was not justifiable or that the criminal was not acting under any obligation. Islam prescribes that a thief's hand should be cut, but such punishment is never inflicted where there is the slightest doubt that, he thief was impelled to crime by hunger. Islam prescribes that both adulterer and adulteress should be stoned but it does not inflict such punishment unless they are married persons and upon conclusive evidence by four eye witnesses i.e. when two married persons flagrantly commit such a heinous crime.
In Europe, people sought to attack religion in order to liberate their minds from superstition and to free people from oppression and tyranny. But if Islamic faith already gives them all the freedom they need to have or they clamor for, why should they attack it? The truth is that these so-called liberals are not interested in the freedom of thought but are rather more interested in spreading moral corruption and uncontrolled sexual anarchy. They use freedom of thought as a mask to hide their base motives. It is no more than a camouflage in their hideous war against religion and morality. They are against Islam not because it restricts freedom of thought but only because it stands for the liberation of mankind from the dominance of its baser passions.
Islam in another way tolerated the non-Muslims in their territory, never allow Muslims to hurt those who're peaceful. The Islamic text enjoin Muslims to treat non-Muslims in a kind and fair manner. Apart from the right and obligation involving worship, they're are equal to Muslims with respect to all other right and obligation related to social life. See Q60:8
Economically, Islam is against both feudalism and capitalism also is the mother of communism and socialism coming with better and fantastic strategies which bridge the gap between the soul called elites and the poor. Before Karl Marx, we heard the regime of Omar Bin Abdullaziz the greatest economics who after collecting "zakkat" became difficult to found the needy under his territory. They said: the west is interested only in the spread of civilization in the east, how can Islam be against civilization when is itself the father of civilization? Islam civilizes man from within so that he would willingly discharge all his responsibilities as a member of a community.
What ought we to do for the realization of the ideal Islam sets forth before us? Granted that Islam is the best system to be found on this earth and that as our historical, geographical as well as international position shows, Islam is our only means to regain honor, leadership and social justice in this world, the question is whither lies the way that leads to the realization of Islamic ideology in a world hostile to it and in the presence of the dictatorial rulers in some Muslim lands who fight against it even more furiously than its enemies from abroad do? "This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor on you and have chosen for you Islam as religion" Q5:3
Critique
The content of the book doesn't matched with the title, it sounded like a rejoinder of a debate between Islamic civilization and the western civilization. In every chapter of the book, the author analyzed how the western world thought on how society suppose to be before bringing the Islamic law on human civilization. In his argument, it seems west doesn't misunderstood Islam, rather, they understood it, but believe that their own style strategies are better, this is why they challenged Islam and now the author is doing the same.
In Islamic discussion, the word "Jihad" is the must controversial and misunderstood, but unfortunately, the author is silent about it, only talk about briefly and also indirectly.
The title of the book is "Islam The Misunderstood Religion" but between the western world and Muslims, who misunderstood Islam? In the Yusufu Turaki's book (Tainted Legacy: Islam, Colonialism And Slavery In Northern Nigeria) he pointed out how Muslims treated non-Muslims so harshly and recruited even Muslims slaves in the name of Islam, We saw how Christians in Sudan spend many years without celebrating Christmas on public, and tbe challenges that minorities are facing in Pakistan and tbe rest of Muslims majority countries. So why the author can't involved Muslims amongst those who misunderstood the religion?
Many people will ask, if the economic policy of the Islamic world is better than the western world, why the economy of the west is growing faster than the Islamic world and there's influx of Muslims to the west searching for job opportunity?
Verdict
The author did a fantastic job in part of research, he goes back through the western history to unveil many uncovered incidents in the west before and during their civilization crusade and depends his argument with fact. Yet, he try his best to build most of his points on the Qur'an and Hadith also with the leadership style of some Muslims leaders in the past.
And the unique style of the author is using "Roma numerals number" for the chapters of holy Qur'an which forced readers like me to go back and look for them.
Then title took the attention of many people to read the book, even those who reading isn't their passion. I can proudly say, the book is a candle that can illuminate the way of a reader during for Islamic discussion. To rate the book, I can give it 6/10.
Buku ini bukan buku yg menyentuh hatimu dengan lembut, melainkan buku yg mampu mengotak-atik pikiranmu. Jungkir balik saya dibuatnya.
Kalau iya, kenapa?
So that is the True religion. And god, the only one, has given this to humanity with his best prophet. Yet, somehow people don't get it. So which one is it? A fake religion from an illiterate prophet selling a non-existent god? Or is it the case of a second rate apologist who thinks he is smarter than both the god and the prophet?
