Naked Nobility #3

The Naked Marquis

Rate this book
The Man Is Practical
As marriage proposals go, Charles Draysmith's suit is as romantic as the moors in December. Emma Peterson might be only a vicar's daughter, and he the new Marquis of Knightsdale, and perhaps he would rather marry her than endure the marriage mart. But when he suggests how much he'll enjoy securing an heir, well, a lady can only endure so much.

But The Lady Is Passionate
There's something about a woman throwing pottery at a man that piques his interest. Perhaps his proposal lacks grace, Charles thinks. But it does seem a perfect solution. He acquires a wife; his young charges have the mother they so desperately need, and Emma gains security and position. You see? Simple. Practical. Sensib- oh no, not the ceramic dog...
He will have to confess the truth to calm her down. And the truth is, he's madly in love...

About the author

Sally MacKenzie

52books632followers
Sally MacKenzie decided to become a writer in grade school when she read one of her stories to the class. Her classmates laughed and she was hooked. She sat down immediately to pen her first novel.

Well, not exactly.

The hooked part is right--cursed might be a better description--but the sitting down and writing part came later. Much later.

Sally eventually went on to college, majoring in English, and, upon graduation, did what many English majors do--she went to law school. But she still couldn’t shake her dream of writing fiction. Midway through law school, she faced the fact that she really did not want to be a lawyer. She took a permanent leave of absence, came home to the Washington, D.C. area, and sat down to type her first novel.

Well, not exactly.

She did come home and write, but mostly she wrote regulations for the United States government’s school nutrition programs. (Ketchup as a vegetable, anyone?) When her law school sweetheart graduated, he moved to D.C. and they got married. A couple years later, the first of their four sons was born, and Sally “retired to manage their family. She wrote a story or two and some picture book texts, all now stored away in a filing cabinet, but she spent most of her energies on baby tending which rapidly evolved into carpool driving. She became an extremely skilled scheduler, getting all four boys to soccer, basketball, baseball, track, swimming, piano, scouts, and birthday parties without ever losing one. (Okay, she did lose the youngest for a few minutes, but she found him before he’d toddled into the parking lot.) And she did more writing--school newsletters, auction programs, class plays, swim league guidance, and the acclaimed annual MacKenzie family newsletter--but no fiction.

Finally, the boys started driving (Eek!) and leaving for college. The nest was emptying and she wasn't getting any younger. The time had come to chase the dream or let it go for good, so she sat down at the computer and wrote. And rewrote. And rewrote again until she had a polished manuscript. She joined the Romance Writers of America, and when the plea went out for Regency manuscripts for the 2004 Golden Heart contest, she sent in The Naked Duke. The stars aligned. She made the final round, and one of the judging editors liked the manuscript and offered to buy it.

Yee haw!!

When not writing or obsessing over the various mysteries of book promotion, Sally can be found at the gym working hard to age gracefully, at the pool on the SLOW side of the Masters swim practice, or at one meeting or another volunteering at the helm of the summer swim league.

Here's Sally with her family--she's 5 ft. 8 in. tall, but she's short in this crowd.

4 Estrellitas.

Emma Peterson siempre quiso a Charles.

Well, didn't realize I was reading these out of order (read this one first), but it's really not that big of a deal. They are all interrelated, but one doesn't really have to come before another in my estimation.

It's a very light romance set in Victorian England. I thought it was pretty cute and it made me laugh, so it's a fun read. It did it's job, it diverted me. I don't quite understand some reviews that are complaining it's too light...that's sorta the point...I wasn't going for high literature here. The title kinda gives it away. Oh well, everyone has their own tastes.

Also, someone complained that the main lady, Emma, was stupid and didn't even know "how babies are made," but let me just point out; women of higher station WERE NOT ACTUALLY EXPLAINED THESE THINGS BACK THEN. Unless they were raised in the country around farm animals, their first experience on "what goes where" is actually on their wedding night (or you know, a bit before). While it may seem really stupid now, it wasn't then. *end rant*

One thing that did get a bit tiresome (at least in the first half of the book) was the constant references to (mostly) the dude's (Charles) nether regions and how they were reacting to Emma. To be fair there were also references to her's, but ok, we get it. They're aroused.

Anywho, what with the pottery throwing, the small mystery of the ghost and the cute nieces of Charles, it was entertaining.

It was cute, but in an overly-cute-trying-too-hard-gag-me way. The characters were annoying, didn't talk to one another about their problems enough, and spent the majority of the time being aroused.

Emma was ridiculously naive. She didn't even know how women became pregnant. Oh, be real!!

The "plot" consisted of Emma and Charles's budding relationship. There was a minor "mystery" thrown in near the end that was apparently supposed to liven things up a bit. Too little, too late.

I really enjoyed this book - it was a lot of fun to read! Charles Draysmith has inherited his Marquis title and now needs to find a wife and produce an heir. He returns to the family home where his deceased brother's children live, and they immediately tell him they want him to be their papa. Emma Peterson is the vicar's daughter, and has been helping to care for the kids with their governess away. Charles decides he's going to marry Emma, but she's not so keen to marry a playboy who doesn't love her back. As Charles finds ways to get Emma into his bed and to agree to marry her, the cast of characters and the shenanigans happening around the estate cause plenty of laughs. There is a bit of a mystery involved as well. Great story, and I'm going to have to go back and read the first two books in the series.

I just couldn't get past the first few chapters and didn't care to continue. The H/H already came off as annoying and what's with this author's penchant to have the Hero immediately propose to the Heroine with barely any foundation?

I do think I have some books by Sally MacKenzie stored in my kindle for a while, and like many, they were forgotten.
Until today!
And what a read it was, I laughed, smiled, giggled at all the antics the different protagonists took part, the witty banters between Emma, Charles and Aunt Beatrice and the behavior of some older ladies.

“Lady Beatrice stared at Charles. “You haven’t seen Miss Peterson since you were a child and yet you just asked her to marry you? Charles shifted his weight and cleared his throat. “Yes. Lady Beatrice shook her head. “Miss Peterson, my apologies. I completely understand. Next time I suggest a heavier object at closer range.

I loved Charles Draysmith, he does not hide behind false prestances, and has a good heart with a serious sense of humor.
Sure, his marriage proposal lacked of some niceties if not romance, he went straight to the goal, giving no second thoughts to how his offer can be perceived and received.
But once he has set his mind, he will go straight to the bottom line.

“May I call you Emma? “Certainly not. “Splendid. And you must call me Charles. “My lord, did you not hear me? I did not give you leave to use my Christian name. “Well, Emma, I am very sorry, but I am taking that leave. One thing I learned in the war was to ask nicely, but if something is crucial for survival, take it—politely, of course. And I do think using your lovely name, Emma, is crucial to my survival.

He will just have to learn to be more tactful and spare in some way his lady’s sensibilities by exploring his own feelings.

Emma Peterson has always loved Charles, since she was a tiny girl lost in her new neighborhood, he was her knight in not so shiny armor but also her friend, it is why his proposal hurt her feelings, it is so calculated without an once of romanticism in it. Plus he awakes unknown sensations, sensations she should feel ashamed and does not comprehend.
I do think the ignorance of the sexuality and carnal pleasures were quite criminal at this time, leaving the women at the mercy of any bad man.
Despite a vilain with dark goal, this story is a light read which left me with a smile on my face.

This book was a lot of fun to read.

Charles becomes the Marquis of Knightsdale rather abruptly after his brother and sister-in-law's deaths, leaving not only the responsibilities as Marquis but their 2 young daughters behind. After returning back to Knightsdale, Charles is surprised his old childhood friend, Emma, working as temporary governess to the young girls. She is beautiful, caring, and living in his home already. What a perfect solution to his sudden need to marry. However, his proposal within only minutes of meeting with her again doesn't quite meet his expectations when she throws a ceramic dog at his head. Emma isn't going to marry a man just because he wants to avoid the marriage market and she is the easiest solution. She was love and passion in her marriage, not a title. Charles makes it his mission to show Emma all the passion he has for his old friend and slowly the love does follow.

I loved this story. I had met Charles in the first book as one of the side characters who was living his life without a title. Straight off, this story shows how upset he is to inherit said title and all that comes with it, including producing an heir. I laughed at several moments throughout the book where Charles is trying to talk and seduce Emma, and she is fighting him the whole way. Fighting his own emotions was always fun to read and is a common thread throughout these books.

Emma was also fun to read because she took whatever Charles dished out and gave it right back to him. She was very much no-nonsense and focused on taking care of the two young girls. She also mentions tons of stuff that happened when they were younger that does make it fun to read as well. There is also a side story where Emma is upset that her widower father has met another woman and is possibly thinking about marriage. It was very interesting to watch how she evolved from being totally against the whole thing and then understanding that her father needs someone in his life now that he's older. I really enjoyed that as well.

There are also the two young nieces, Isabella and Claire, who start planning to get Charles and Emma together. Some of the ideas they come up with are quite funny and the way that they reason them out also made me laugh. They were very cute and I really enjoyed reading their scenes.

Overall, I loved this book. Completely didn't want to stop reading it and had to see what was going to happen. It was great.

A Regency romance that is a fun romp. The characters are a ton of fun - the Marquis, The woman he loves, his two nieces, his very blunt aunt, not to mention a whole small society of elder ladies who love their brandy and are not afraid to say things they shouldn't. And nearly everyone around the pair are happy to meddle to get them together. Throw in a tiny bit of a mystery and you have an enjoyable read.

Charles juga tipe yang to the point soal perasaannya, ga sok jaim or mentingin harga diri sbg cowo seperti beberapa tokoh pria dalam buku" HR lainnya. Jadi, walau buku ini kurang ada intriknya, tapi gw cukup menyukainya, ga sabar ngg cerita Robby dan adik sang Duke ;D

Dapet hadiah dari mba Dian hehehe.. *gumawo*

<< ngga jadi novel kl gitu>>*

yg bikin heran adalah, Heroine nya 26th dan dia seorang guru okelah guru pengganti, tapi masa anatomi tubuh manusia saja dia tidak tau?
trus dia kan tinggal di pedesaan, emang kaga pernah liat kuda or ayam or kelinci or apalah doing "that" ?? sampe geleng2 kepala takjub gw ck!
malu2in generasi Heroine 26th muahahahaha... << mentang2 gw 26 yeee >> hmpfh

I borrowed the "naked" books from a lady that I know, and she was raving about them! So funny! So romantic! The perfect books! Yeeeaaah....maybe the buildup was the book's downfall. It was OK. The characters were a lot more colourful than in most bodice-rippers, so that says something. I enjoyed more than this one, but still - bottom line is: I finished the book; I didn't curse as I was reading it; and it did pass the time.

When Charles unexpectedly inherits the title of Marquis of Knightsdale upon his brother's death her goes to Knightsdale to host a house party to choose a bride. But before any guests arrive he sets his sights on the local vicar's daughter Emma who has conveniently been in love with him since they were children. His two nieces, his flamboyant aunt and the local colorful gentry plot to get them to the alter.

The best part of the story were the supporting characters who were funny and colorful making the story amusing to read throughout. The 'I've loved you since we were children' is not so original but I did like Emma and Charles was wicked and a proper rouge.

hard to finish

The story started off light hearted. Charles is new to his title and looking for a wife. Emma is a childhood friend who would solve Charles' problem. Her reaction to his less than romantic proposal was the highlight of the book.

Emma is the vicar's daughter. When she was a child, she fell in love with Charles. He was the second son of a Marquis. She had grown up being in love with Charles.

Things changed and Charles became the Marquis. He has reluctantly faced up to his duty to marry and sire an heir. His Aunt has set up a house party in order for Charles to meet eligible young ladies. At the same time, he will familiarize himself with his estate as well as the two daughters of his late brother.

When he arrives at his home, he finds that his nieces are no longer infants, and their temporary governess is Emma. He remembers her from his youth. He remembers that she was in love with him. He decides that rather than going through the pain of courtship of some giggling girls who are too young, he will simply marry Emma.

Basically he expects her to say yes to his proposal, they will marry and he can return to London to continue having a quite entertaining life.

Rather than saying yes, Emma throws a china dog at him. She is still in awe and in love with Charles, but she does not intend to marry anyone who plans to abandon her and make her a part time wife.

Ms MacKenzie is a master at creating wonderful characters. Emma and Charles have humor which makes their dialog continually amusing. They are both loyal to family. Which can create problems for Emma. In fact, both of them are likable human beings.

The plot moves along at a good pace. At times, I felt that Emma's innocence became a little too much to be believed. She lived in the country, surely she had some idea of how procreation worked. But, her lack of knowledge does add a great deal of humor to the story. Charles' explanations illustrate his wit, his humor and his gentle kindness.

Emma and Charles share childhood memories but they also share a genuine friendship which becomes much more. Because of their shared history the friendship is based on a frim foundation.

I enjoy this series very much. I especially love the humor which goes along with the romance.

Ms MacKenzie is one of my favorite authors because she always makes me laugh. What's not to love?

So, I had a medical procedure done earlier today and my post-anesthesia self cannot deal with Holden Caulfield. Needing something light and frothy, I scanned through my Kindle library and found this bundle. It was just what the doctor ordered. The characters range between delightful and quaint and villainous and furry and four-footed. I'm reading this series as a bundle on my Kindle, but I'm going to review each individually. I'm behind on my reading goal, so I need the numbers.

In The Naked Marquis we re-encounter Major Charles Draysmith, a close friend of James. They served together in the recent war against Napoleon. Charles’s elder brother, the Marquis, has died, along with his wife, leaving Charles with the responsibility of the estate, something he never wanted. Part of that responsibility includes their two young daughters, Claire and Isabel. Charles knows he needs a wife, so he has his Aunt Beatrice to plan a country house party and invite likely candidates for Marchioness.

5 STARS, ROMANCE DRAMA MYSTERY

Book 2 in Sally Mackenzie's Naked Nobility Series and The Naked Marquis is an entertainment enjoyment. There is a blurb that is very good detailed.
This Regency Romance Drama has a touch of mystery just at the edge of the storyline that everyone just seems to shake off & go about their day, until it gets larger, then just to large to shake off. It doesn't interfere with the enticing falling in both lust & love of Charles and Emma.
Charles's charm comes straight off the pages & words to make the reader smile & feel the yum of him. Emma is a 26 year old virgin, who knows less about sex between a man & woman as primary children do. No, only some. However, her father is the Village Vicar & has lived at the church house het whole life with her mom dying young.
You will be happy you read this one!

Sally MacKenzie is really an Expert in Vulgar Funny Historical Romance🤭🤭🤭. When I am reading her books, I am either blushing or laughing or appalled on the dialogue of the characters. MY BLUSHING FACE GOODNESS😂🤣😅.

This book is all about Emma and Charles courtship. Emma is the Vicars daughter while Charles is the second son of the Marquis. But because his elder brother died in an accident he needs to take uo the title of the Marquis and take care of his nieces. Ohhhh... I Forgot, this two are childhood friends and Emma is in love with Charles since she was still a child.

Well that's my gist😅. A funny, full of sexual tension, angst Romance. I am on an Easy Reading without heavy plots Marathon. 🏃🏻😅

Emma & Charles

I continue to enjoy this "Naked" series.

Emma was a bit tedious and overly naive, but probably true to character as a vicar's daughter who lost her mother at a young age.

The mystery part wasn't much of a mystery, but that was ok. It still provided a little side story.

The young girls working to get "momma" & "papa" together were cute.

Aunt Bea was pretty funny along with the club. I thought the insults to the London ladies were a bit petty (focused on their physical appearance, rather than their poor attitudes).

Charles may be my favorite Hero in a long while. So patient and sweet and sure of his intentions. I adored him. Extra bonus points for putting the ring on her finger before passion overtook them. ❤️

An entertaining country house caper. Charles has unexpectedly inherited a title from his brother, not to mention two lively young daughters. He should probably marry soon, and who better than the local vicar’s daughter? Emma has always idolized Charles, ever since he let her trail after him and his friends as children. But now she’s not sure if he really wants her, or just a convenient mother for his nieces. Also, the house might be haunted. It’s certainly not going to be a dull house party.

This is more like it. I’ve read and enjoyed later Sally MacKenzie works, but the first two in this series just didn’t have the same spark. This one had a much lighter touch.
