Keigo Higashino (東野 圭吾) is one of the most popular and biggest selling fiction authors in Japan—as well known as James Patterson, Dean Koontz or Tom Clancy are in the USA.
Born in Osaka, he started writing novels while still working as an engineer at Nippon Denso Co. (presently DENSO). He won the Edogawa Rampo Prize, which is awarded annually to the finest mystery work, in 1985 for the novel Hōkago (After School) at age 27. Subsequently, he quit his job and started a career as a writer in Tokyo.
In 1999, he won the Mystery Writers of Japan Inc award for the novel Himitsu (The Secret), which was translated into English by Kerim Yasar and published by Vertical under the title of Naoko in 2004. In 2006, he won the 134th Naoki Prize for Yōgisha X no Kenshin. His novels had been nominated five times before winning with this novel.
The Devotion of Suspect X was the second highest selling book in all of Japan— fiction or nonfiction—the year it was published, with over 800,000 copies sold. It won the prestigious Naoki Prize for Best Novel— the Japanese equivalent of the National Book Award and the Man Booker Prize. Made into a motion picture in Japan, The Devotion of Suspect X spent 4 weeks at the top of the box office and was the third highest‐grossing film of the year.
Higashino’s novels have more movie and TV series adaptations than Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum, and as many as Michael Crichton.

It's an entertaining, well crafted murder mystery novel by Keigo Higashino. The story really can keep you guessing and it isn't boring, this time the author kept his long winded criticism on the Japanese society mostly to himself and allowed the story and the characters to showcase those social issues on their own and allowed the readers to come up to their own conclusion, for that, I'm glad.

Vier Ehepaare treffen sich in der Region Tokyo in einer Ferienhaussiedlung zu einem Paukwochenende für ihre schulpflichtigen Kinder. Die Schüler sollen am Higame-See vom Privatlehrer Tsukumi auf die Aufnahmeprüfung für die h?here Schule vorbereitet werden. Der erste Eindruck, dass hier gut situierte Familien an einem gemeinsamen Projekt arbeiten, wird schnell von spürbaren Gruppenquerelen überlagert. Auch wenn die Teilnehmer in formvollendeter H?flichkeit miteinander umgehen und Krankenhausdirektor Fujima als Besitzer des Hauses die F?den in der Hand zu halten scheint, ist sich die Gruppe ganz und gar nicht einig. Namiki Shunsuke besetzt eine Au?enseiterrolle, weil er nicht der leibliche Vater von Shota ist und als Kritiker des Privatschul-Kultes die vorgebliche Einigkeit der anderen Eltern ankratzt. Als die Geliebte eines der Herren überraschend auftaucht und ermordet wird, rücken die Teilnehmer eng zusammen mit dem Vorsatz, die Tat gemeinsam zu vertuschen und den Kindern gegenüber eine m?glichst glaubwürdige Erkl?rung der Ereignisse zu produzieren. Der Plan unbeobachtet die Leiche zu beseitigen, scheint von Anfang an unrealistisch. Dass Fujima als Krimi-Fan sich auch im Mordfall Eriko zum Organisator berufen fühlte, schien mir eher ein Nachteil der geplanten Vertuschung zu sein. Vier Paare mit jeweils einem Kind, eine Geliebte und ein Lehrer bilden ein komplexes Beziehungsgefüge, das unter der Last der Tat kaum halten wird. Als Leser habe ich mich in der Rolle eines inkognito bleibenden Ermittlers gefühlt, der nur darauf wartet, die elit?re Truppe bei einem Fehler zu erwischen.

Già avevo l'impressione, avendo letto che i giapponesi avessero un rapporto un po' malsano con il lavoro: pochissime ferie tutte concentrate in Agosto, tendenza alla perfezione ed all'efficienza, fedeltà all'azienda, gente che dorme addirittura al lavoro. Ma non immaginavo che tutto partisse già dalla scuola primaria...
In questa storia quattro coppie con figli in età da scuola elementare si riuniscono un'estate in una sorta di ritiro di studio per i piccoli. Essi dovranno studiare ed impegnarsi assieme ad un tutore per prepararsi alle selezioni molto dure per accedere ad una prestigiosa scuola media privata. A quanto pare infatti in Giappone il sistema scolastico pubblico è molto carente e non assicura l'ingresso nel mondo del lavoro. Solo chi ha studiato nelle migliori e selezionate scuole private avrà la possibilità di ottenere un lavoro per la vita e, dopo aver lavorato, lavorato e solo lavorato, avere forse sulla lapide la scritta "Presidente".
Durante questo ritiro la collega, nonché amante di uno dei genitori (padre putativo del bambino) si presenta con una scusa, turbando la quiete generale. Ma questa quiete viene ben presto scossa perché la signorina in questione viene uccisa e proprio la moglie del suo amante confessa l'omicidio. Cosa fare ora? Chiamare la polizia o far sparire il cadavere? Ovviamente, con nostro sommo piacere, si decide per questa seconda opzione ed il finale sarà davvero una bella sorpresa.
Questo è il mio primo approccio con il mystery giapponese e l'ho davvero amato tanto. Mi ha molto colpita (in maniera inquietante) la formalità dei rapporti, il "servilismo" (non mi viene un termine migliore) nello scusarsi continuamente per non aver dato il 100% ed il non perdere mai le staffe nemmeno davanti ad un omicidio. Proprio un altro mondo per me.
Comunque davvero un thriller consigliato.

Questo libro mi ha riportata in un primo momento, alle atmosfere de Le quattro casalinghe di Tokyo con l'occultamento del cadavere della giovane e bella Takashina Eriko. Il romanzo è ambientato nel suggestivo comprensorio turistico del Lago Himegami, dove un gruppo di genitori si è appartato e ha affitato un cottage per i figli, in cui studiare per prepararsi agli esami di ammissione a una scuola media prestigiosa. Per i giapponesi essere ammessi a frequentare scuole e università importanti è una garanzia per ottenere un buon posto di lavoro, un posto fisso, di solito. Quindi, questi genitori hanno stretto un'alleanza e assunto un precettore privato per assicurarsi un periodo di studio forsennato che potrebbe portare all'ammissione (ma non necessariamente).
A Shunsuke Namiki quest'alleanza sembra un po' sospetta, e non capisce perché sua moglie Minako ne voglia fare parte. Per questioni lavorative, infatti, Namiki arriva al comprensorio dopo tutti gli altri. Tutti sospettano che a lui importi poco di Shōta, che è il suo figliastro e non suo figlio naturale.
Quando nel cottage vicino al lago si presenta Takashina Eriko - apparentemente per portare delle importanti carte che Namiki aveva dimenticato, ma in realtà per dare appuntamento al suo amante, Namiki, appunto - molti equilibri saltano in aria ed Eriko viene uccisa. Namiki scopre che è stata sua moglie a uccidere la sua amante e, seppur riluttante, accetta il piano degli altri genitori di occultarne il cadavere gettandolo in fondo al lago.
Ma ancora non riesce a capacitarsi che dei semplici conoscenti stiano trasgredendo la legge solo per evitare a Minako di andare in prigione.

Sono stata un pò troppo fiduciosa mi sa, tentando la lettura di un autore orientale ed è un tipo di letteratura con cui non vado molto d'accordo, e purtroppo anche stavolta non è stato un gran successo.
Sunshuke è il marito di Minako e la raggiunge nella struttura in cui si trova col figlio Shoto e con altre famiglie, per preparare gli esami di ammissione alle scuole medie.
Da subito cominciano a succedere delle cose strane tra cui una delle mogli che lo avvisa di fare attenzione agli altri, e l'arrivo inaspettato della sua amante con delle importanti informazioni.
All'appuntamento preso dai due però lei non si presenta, e al ritorno dell'uomo in struttura si presenta la sconvolgente sorpresa di trovarla morta, dalle spiegazioni uccisa da sua moglie in un momento di rabbia.
Ma sarà proprio così?
Ecco, leggendo questa trama sembrerebbe di avere davanti un thriller piano di suspence, da brividi e tensione continua...beh invece no, è esattamente il contrario!
La sensazione che ho avuto dalla prima all'ultima pagina è stata di leggere un saggio.
Innanzitutto non c'è nemmeno un minimo di introduzione, di descrizioni, di presentazione dei personaggi, che permetta di familiarizzare con loro e con le scene e le ambientazioni a cui assistiamo, e questo rende difficile entrare in empatia con loro.
E questo risulta aggravato dai nomi che per me sono complicati da associare ad ognuno, sicuramente per noi occidentali inusuali, e quindi ho faticato non poco a capire chi stesse parlando o chi facesse cosa.
Ma la nota peggiore è l'impressione di piattume e monotonia a cui vado incontro finora ogni volta che legga un romanzo che appartenga alla letteratura orientale, con la rara eccezione di Le quattro casalinghe di Tokyo che invece mi è piaciuto tantissimo.
Immagino a questo punto che sia proprio una caratteristica dello stile narrativo che hanno, che tende a scivolarmi addosso senza lasciare il segno, a non colpirmi e non coinvolgermi, non provocandomi nessuna, nemmeno la minima emozione.
La storia di base devo dire che qui sarebbe stata anche interessante ma, per il modo in cui viene affrontata e sviluppata, risulta quasi scontata.
E' solo per questo spunto che mi sento di dare 2 stelle e non una sola, ma non è esattamente un libro di cui consiglierei la lettura!

Secret of The Lake

Writing a review, after a long time. Well, Keigo Higashino has become my favourite thriller/mystery writer from Japan, trying to read every book by him. This one was short and standalone. It's not the best, nor is it the worst. It's just enjoyable. The book doesn't have the classic "Keigo Higashino twist" factor but still had a good time reading.
About the story:
" Four couples decide to spend the entire summer at a cottage, with the intention of preparing their children for entrance exams to a prestigious private high school. They have hired a private teacher to instruct their children personally. The cottage is located on the serene shores of Himegami Lake, making it a picturesque and beautiful setting. However, there is a strange atmosphere at the cottage, as both the children and adults are consumed by anxiety and fear of failure. The only member of the group who seems unaffected by this atmosphere is Sunsuke Namiki, the most recent addition to the group. Namiki refuses to put pressure on their adopted child and their academic aspirations. However, Namiki is also dealing with personal issues, as he is considering divorce due to an affair with his secretary. Suddenly, Namiki's lover is killed, and his spouse takes responsibility for the murder. However, Namiki is not convinced and begins their own investigation to uncover the truth. Why would six people risk getting involved in a murder case with a secret? Is it all for the sake of friendship? As the investigation progresses, the brutal truth slowly emerges from the darkness into the light.

"Secret of The Lake" is short, barely 200 pages. The book is slow paced. The story felt a bit predictable to me. It was easy to connect the dots early on. This leads me to believe this book is more psychological than the whodunit type of a book. If we consider that, then it does work greatly. The last 30 or so pagss were definitely the best part of the book. All that build up makes sense.
The characters weren't that special to be remembered. The book definitely had an eerie feeling. The families and their thinking process was certainly abnormal. Which sets the premise of the book quite goodly. People are so weird that they might commit the harshest things for their loved ones without even realising what they have done. Frankly, the characters were weird and kinda creepy. It's one thing to love their child and a whole another thing to do what they did in the book. Furthermore, the ending was good but didn't seem right.
As I said before, this book works more of psychological than whodunit. By the end of the book, there's nothing hidden. Everything is out. It's up to Namiki, who seemed the only sane character. Honestly, the progression and the development are quite good and pay off in the end. But that ending is a bit hard to swallow.
Despite all of that making sense in the end, I saw right through the story. Was it intentionally done like that? Maybe. The book was slow paced, and the ending was satisfactory, but I wouldn't say it's super great or anything. It's good, and you can read it in a day.
