Garage Band
When Giuliano's father loans him the family garage, he and three of his friends form a band. “Questa è la stanza� è la storia di un gruppo di ragazzi comuni, come potremmo essere noi o i nostri amici, alla ricerca di un posto in cui suonare con la loro band. Ma la stanza per i nostri protagonisti è qualcosa di più: è la ricerca di un posto in cui essere sé stessi, niente più e mi ha ricordato il concetto avanguardista di Virginia Woolf né “Una stanza tutta per sé�.
Il racconto scaturisce direttamente da un fatto realmente accaduto nella vita di Gipi ed è proprio per questo motivo che si percepiscono tutte le emozioni che provano i ragazzi, grazie anche alle illustrazioni stile urban, acquerellate con colori primari, ma leggermente desaturate.
Spero di riuscire a recuperare altro di questo autore, ancora così poco conosciuto.

I appreciated the artwork--the watercolors and lines follow suit with the story (the grittiness of friends starting a band in their garage, the struggles of a generation trying to find its way, the complexity of music and its influences)...
That said, I wanted more. I wanted to know more about the characters--their backstories, their connections with one another, their reasons for venturing into music. I may be expecting more than I should, but knowing a lot of musicians,and the impact their art has had on them through the years, I felt like this story had so much more to offer...and, well, just didn't.
So, yes--I liked it. Just wished Gipi would have fleshed it out a bit more. He certainly has the talent to do so.

Gipi’nin sanatı bildiğimiz gibi. Bu adamın yeteneği var. Ama� Anlattığı şeyler hakkında aynı hissi besleyemiyorum, en azından bu kitapta. Böyle bir eserin yollar, kilometreler aşıp, Türkçe’ye çevirilip kuşe kağıda basılmasını ilginç buluyorum. Sonsuz bir olasılıklar denizi Türkçe basılmamış kitaplar. Bu az olasılığı hak ediyor mu emin değilim. Karakterleri, arka planlarını, müstakil hayatlarında, kendi çemberlerinde ve birbirleri ile ilişkilerini anlamak, özümsemek için kısa kalmış. Bilemiyorum. Hem çeviri hem de kültür itibariyle İtalyan okur farklı şeyler düşünüyor mudur? Geçen yapay zeka ile ilgili bir podcast dinledim. Orada Cem Say diyor ki “İnsanların tamamının otomatik olarak bildikleri ve bu yüzden kitaplara yazmadıkları şeyler var. Yapay zeka bunu henüz anlayamıyor.� Yani bazı kültürel, duygusal veya ima içeren, esas ifade etmek istediği şeyi doğrudan işaret etmeyen şeyler. I just finished reading this very heartwarming graphic novel about four teenage boys, their band, and a garage in which they practice. More than anything it is about these four lives, their individual strife and struggles, their dreams and ambitions, and their relationships with people around them � friends and family.
Garage Band is the kind of graphic novel that doesn’t make any point. It doesn’t want to. It is that slice-of-life graphic novel that lets you soak in the moment, the characters, the simple story of them just wanting to create music, their sometimes-misplaced ideology, and what growing-up or on the road to growing-up is all about.
Garage Band is just a bittersweet meditation on teenage life and how whether it is Italy, America, or India, adolescence is just the same. Giuliano’s father kindness leads to the band getting his garage as practice space. That’s where the story begins. They are extremely passionate about their music and are deeply connected to each other.
Gipi’s characters fit in any landscape. The country doesn’t matter. The story does. We get to know the boys and before you know it, the book is over at about 114 pages. The watercolours are restrained but extremely engaging and it all comes alive in contrasting panels. At some point I thought more could have been fleshed out, but I was wrong as I read further. It wasn’t needed at all. Garage Band says a lot and hides a lot. There is telling and showing and in good measure. It is one of those graphic novels that will most certainly stay with me for long and I will reread it very soon.

Gipi is an Italian graphic novelist and Garage Band is his most recent work. It’s the story of four boys who come from divergent backgrounds but join together for a common cause. We’re given four models of urban adolescence: Stefano is a cut-up, rebellious and crude, Alex is damaged, ungrateful and confused, Alberto is tame but malleable, and Giuliano is kind but self-conscious. The four young men, together, are a composite for teenagedom. Their friendships and the band they form are subject to the insecurities and project the passion that mark the young � a trepidation and unsureness combined with a sense of invincibility.
We’re introduced to the band as they’ve just begin to gel, which is in part thanks to Giuliano’s father’s kindness in offering a garage for the four to use as a practice space. Other than their relationship in a more public practice setting, the four share private similarities. Alex’s father left for the Caribbean after he was caught embezzling money form his factory, and Giuliaino’s father is present but distant and distracted � he refused to take pictures of his young son without one of his hunting dogs sharing the frame. All four are passionate about what they do, and exhibit a guarded loyalty to the ones in their lives who matter most. Guiliano cares deeply for his girlfriend Nina, Alex honors his grandfather’s memory, Alberto assists his ailing father, and Stefano, lacking a support center in his family, is fiercely devoted to his friends and his band.
The story unfolds as the boys begin to feel more and more comfortable in their craft, and, when Alberto’s amp goes on the fritz, their combined ambition drives them to a series of poor decisions in which their foolishness and naïveté is laid bare. Regardless, the strength of their friendships and belief in the band are tantamount, and the story Gipi weaves is more sympathetic than not.
Gipi builds his characters and story with finesse, and he unravels their pasts slowly and carefully. Despite his care, his characterizations are not always spot-on. Even while giving us ample room to understand and empathize with the band, some of Gipi’s creations, Alberto and Alex in particular, are difficult to like. While it’s bad enough that Alberto is edgy and has apparently no respect for authority, the fact he comes from privilege makes it that much worse. Alex, a spoiled Nazi fetishist, is only so much more understandable after we learn of his father’s flight. Alberto and Giuliano, while pleasant, are sometimes inseparable in their inoffensiveness. It’s a fortunate aside that we’re able to see Giuliano with his clever girlfriend Nina, whose witticisms and interactions with her lover showcase a whole other facet of his personality.
Gipi’s watercolors are restrained but eye-catching. Gritty and subdued in color, the cityscapes and individuals in the story come to us as jagged, sometimes murky, but always alive with expression and detail. The scenes of Nina and Guiliano at the beach are particularly arresting, as are the wide sheaths of grey sky and fading sunlight implicit in some of the landscapes. While not the surest of successes, Garage Band is still a resonant and welcome journey into the past, where fidelity and rebellion are just different sides of the same coin.

Four teenage boys living in a rural town form a band and are given a garage by one of the boys' fathers to practice their music in. This is the story of their very different lives and how despite their backgrounds they are brought together by a shared love of music.
Gipi writes and draws a compelling story of youth, where we get to know the different members of the band and their personalities. They had small adventures such as stealing equipment from a church basement when their amp blows out or the drummer's weird obsession with Nazis, but there's also the more serious side of how opportunity comes along for some and not for others and what real friendship is.
I enjoyed the book a lot and, while not as powerful as his other book "Notes for a War Story", it captures the hope and energy of youth and passes it on to the reader. Well worth a read and definitely one to pick up if you're an indie comics fan.

Sizin sevdiğiniz bir yazar olur veya genel anlamda popüler bir yazardır, 5-10 kitabı vardır ama pek kimseler dillendirmese de 1-2 kitabı kötüdür.
Maalesef Gipi'nin ismine güvenerek basılmış, yine o isme güvenerek benim tarafımdan da satın alınmış bir eser oldu.
Çizimler güzel, karakterler de ilgi çekici gibi duruyordu pozitiflerden başlamak gerekirse ancak kocaman bir yaşanmışlık çizgisinde çok dar bir kısma temas ediyor hissi veriyor anlatılan hikaye. İnsan okurken "Alex'in nazi sempatisinden bir şey çıkacak, Giuliano'nun sevgilisi ortalığı karıştıracak, öbürünün babası bir şey diyecek" vb beklentiye giriyor. Ama sanki işin başı var sonu yok, sonu varsa da başı yok..
Anladığım kadarıyla bu işten zevk almak için İtalyan yaşantısına kökten hakim olmak lazım. Öyle 3-5 İtalyan dizisi, filmi izledim. İtalyanlar şöyledir böyledir gibi yaklaşımlarla da olacak gibi değil. Bir Türk'ün Anadolu köylüsü arasındaki sıradan diyaloğa gülebilmesi ama yabancının burada ne komiklik var ki demesi gibi bir durum var ortada.

Visually beautiful� there's a kind of ephemeral quality to it, with somewhat sketchy drawings, and dabs of lovely watercolor on the drawings, almost as if an attempt capture the memory of teen years themselves from an adult perspective� This is less a story of music than it is the very process that many kids go through, trying to put together a band because they like music so much, because they want to do something together� So, we get the feel of the struggle of trying to et things together that a group of boys goes through, and it is pretty slice of life in that it is not really remarkable, any of what happens� you get this picture of teen boys, none of them with remarkable personalities, nothing flashy, and what they go through� and it feels like an introduction to a larger story, because not much really happens in the story, is pretty forgettable, really in terms of action, but the drawings and maybe especially the color will stay with you. Odd book in that it is not what one expects, so you can see why most readers are disappointed; it doesn't capture the imagined thrill of an established bandit the inception of its career, it is just about these guys trying to do this for vague reasons. Having had this impulse myself, it was interesting in that respect. A little. In a way, it's more about the process of getting a garage so the band can practice in it than music itself. And there's an anecdote about burning out an amp and stealing one, etc� but my level of interest and memory really will be shorter and less vivid than the length of this essay, so I'm done!

Although not as good as the astonishing , is a simple, beautifully drawn story about a bunch of kids getting together to form a band, using a garage on of their parents has lent them to keep them out of trouble. As you can imagine, they whole keeping them out of trouble thing is not entirely effective.
I think Gipi's main strength is the way he appears to be able to build extremely strong characterisation into a few words and a couple of scribbles on the page. It takes a tiny period of time before you're in the minds of these people and wanting to hear more about their lives, so much of which seems to have taken place off the pages of the book.

Italian-made comic about a group of teens attempting to garage band it up. I found the illustration severe for my taste. And the plot didn't seem to go anywhere. But there is something to it. Definitely an artist behind it. I admire it, but I didn't enjoy it.

The best word I can think of to describe this work by Italian comics creator Gipi is honest. This is a graphic novel whose story and characters feel very honest - even if all their actions are not. Perhaps “authentic� might be a better word then.
The narrative revolves around four young men in modern Italy trying to get there garage band off the ground and onto the scene. But each member has different pressures and responsibilities at home, and widely divergent personalities and ways of handling their obstacles. Still, they manage to keep their music and their friendship at the forefront and Garage Band manages to explore this in a way that doesn’t feel cheesy or like Gipi is trying to hard. Rather, everything flows very naturally, and I can completely understand why each boy thinks and acts they way they do throughout - I don’t agree with them most of the time (and often the characters and others in their lives don’t agree with each other either) but I understand. And Gipi writes and illustrates everything in a very compelling way. I came to really care about this little group and was wishing for their eventual success in the end.
Concerning the art itself, Gipi’s style is not the cute or highly-stylized art I tend to praise quite a bit in my reviews. But it’s very energetic and well-suited to Gipi’s storytelling. I also love the controlled messiness of it. I’m also a huge fan of watercolors and inks so the bleeding, watery look to some of the art was a plus for me. I also think that contributed a lot to the feeling of the music that the raggazzi are trying to create together.
Overall, super pleased I found this and took the time to read it.

W „Sali prób� Gipi opowiada bardzo prostą historię - czterech dorastających chłopaków zakłada zespół, który trochę ma być ucieczką od codziennych problemów, trochę okazją do wyżycia się, trochę do wykrzyczenia tego co ich gnębi, bo ich piosenki są o życiu. Problemem jest miejsce, w którym będą się spotykać. Oferuje im je ojciec jednego z muzyków, ale na ściśle określonych zasadach. A jak wiadomo dorastający, zbuntowani mężczyźni i zasady to niekoniecznie zgrany duet.
Fabuła komiksu nie jest głęboka, wnikliwa i skomplikowana - ot garaż, podrostki i rock’n’roll - ale we mnie dotknęła czułej struny, bo znam takich podrostków i takie garaże, wiem czym jest ucieczka w muzykę i jaka to zajawka robić coś swojego. Zobaczyłam bardzo konkretne osoby i sytuacje z moich lat młodzieńczych, fajna i sentymentalna to wycieczka w przeszłość.
Ale mówiąc szczerze dla mnie komiksy Gipiego mogłyby nie mieć żadnej fabuły, bo czytam je dla czystej przyjemności obcowania z jego sztuką. Wspaniałe są te rysunki: paleta kolorów, akwarelowe plamy, ostre kreski tuszu - specyficzny styl Gipiego tworzy wyjątkowy nastrój. Szczególnie kocham plansze z szerokimi planami i elementami krajobrazu. Wiedziałabym na ścianach.

Questa è la stanza è una storia, di ispirazione autobiografica, scritta da Gipi, pubblicata dalla Coconino Press nel lontano 2005. Oggi, la Coconino sceglie di ripubblicarla in una nuova edizione.

Questa è la stanza racconta di quattro amici � Giuliano, Stefano, Alex e Alberto � e della loro passione per la musica. Ognuno di loro ha un aspetto fisico e un carattere ben delineato e porta nella storia collettiva del gruppo, quella personale. Giuliano mette a disposizione degli amici un capannone concessogli temporaneamente (a patto, cioè, di non fare cazzate) dal padre. Dando una ripulita a quello spazio, lui e i suoi amici possono finalmente coronare il sogno di avere una band e uno spazio in cui fare le prove. Alex è il batterista della band, vive con sua madre e sua zia e si vanta di essere un fan del nazismo. Alberto non vuole mai lasciare solo il padre: una volta è stato male e da allora il ragazzo ha paura che possa risuccedere. Stefano, infine, è il cantante della band; è il più egocentrico e pazzoide del gruppo. Proprio lui, grazie alle conoscenze del padre, può mettere in contatto la band con una casa discografica. È l’occasione che tutti aspettavano. Il problema sorge quando i quattro amici si rendono conto di non avere la strumentazione necessaria per incidere un cd. Allora, tentano il colpo grosso, ma li aspetteranno non pochi guai.

Questa è la stanza è il racconto dei sogni di una generazione passata, ma anche (come apprendiamo nella nota a chiusura della graphic novel) di Gipi, che ha da sempre avuto un rapporto intimo e importante con la musica. La stanza in questione è il luogo simbolo in cui questi ragazzi possono sentirsi liberi di esprimere le proprie storie, le proprie personalità. È il luogo che gli permette di perseguire i loro sogni. I temi che si rincorrono in questa narrazione sono: l’adolescenza, il rapporto padre-figlio, l’amicizia, la periferia, i sogni che chiedono tutto, l’amore giovane.
Questa è la stanza traccia con delicatezza e realismo i contorni dell’adolescenza e Gipi lo fa regalandoci dei bellissimi acquerelli, delicati e decisi allo stesso tempo. Inoltre, in questa edizione, oltre alla postfazione dell’autore, sono presenti anche disegni inediti.

Eppure non lo è, e non riuscirò mai a capire se la motivazione dietro questo necessario soffermarsi sulle sofferte e sottili linee di contorno sia attribuibile alla innegabile bellezza di ogni tavolo o alla catarsi provocata nell’animo di chi, a un certo punto, una “stanza� ce l’ha avuta � con lo stesso spirito e con la stessa energia volatile che, come ogni esperienza vitale, resta impressa come uno schizzo in una tela, quella della vita, su cui si dipinge talmente tanto da non rendersi conto di quanto si stia consumando il pennello.
Se c’� un tratto comune a ogni singola generazione esistita negli ultimi sessant’anni, è quello di voler fare musica. Capita a tutti. Inoltre, con l’avvento della tecnologia e dei software di produzione da casa, questa necessità è progressivamente divenuta più semplice da trasformare in output concreto. Forse, aggiungo, dietro questa semplicità (più altre mille dinamiche determinate dal mondo social, ecc.) si nasconde l’inesorabile passaggio dalla “necessità di fare musica� per sfogare le frustrazioni e le emozioni della vita adolescenziale e post-adolescenziale al “vorrei fare musica perché sembrano farlo tutti�. Perdonerete il bias di questa prossima affermazione: non esiste crescendo emotivo più forte dell’arrivare, finalmente, a quel momento in cui le orecchie, il corpo e l’anima sono completamente avvolti dal treno sonico di chitarre distorte, batterie pestate come sacchi da boxe e corde vocali che vorrebbero rompere la barriera del suono, e magari anche quella tra il presente e il futuro. A volte è tutto stonato, e fa anche schifo, ma il sapore è sempre, innegabilmente, quello della libertà. Sfido a trovare un essere umano che, in quegli anni, preferirebbe una carriera sicura piuttosto che il famosamente flebile freedom of being.
Non esiste, invece, al polo diametralmente opposto, dolore più forte del rendersi conto di come quella libertà non attraversi le proprie papille gustative da anni. Com’� che tutto va via sempre così velocemente e inesorabilmente? Non lo saprà mai nessuno, ma il punk, più di tutte le altre cose, è notoriamente rapido. Questa è la stanza inquadra i suoi personaggi in movimento, proprio nel pieno di quegli anni, eppure è raccontata da un Gipi che, invece, sta nettamente assaporando la malinconia, e non la libertà. Questo punto di vista dà vita a un racconto fatto di scene, pensieri, azioni e personalità azzardate e sconsiderate che sono intervallate da momenti segretamente meditativi, puntini lasciati in sospeso (come ogni perfetto spaccato di vita) di proposito, per permettere al lettore di inserire le proprie riflessioni. Alla luce di tutte queste riflessioni, a mio parere, le splendide, magiche, silenziose tavole paesaggistiche che fanno da costante interludio all’impulsività del rumore narrano un racconto nel racconto che spezza in due per delicatezza e profondità, quasi quanto la storia stessa.
Un celebre autore, profeta del decadentismo, che è stato sicuramente punk a tratti, diceva che vivere è la cosa più rara al mondo perché la maggior parte delle persone � semplicemente � esiste. I personaggi di questo fumetto, per poche, splendide pagine di incosciente onestà, vivono e come.

November 3, 2022Çok uzun zamandır grafik roman okumadığımı fark ettim, geçen ay okuduğum 1984'ü saymıyorum zira o plansız programsızdı, kitabın sahibinden tesadüf ile ödünç alıp okumuştum. Grafik roman okumayı özlediğimi fark ettim. Bazen yorucu olabiliyor (küçük yazılar, 300-400 sayfa süren anlatımlar vb) ama çoğunlukla tatmin edici oluyor benim için. Neden grafik romanları çok sevdiğimin nedenlerini daha önce birkaç kez yazdım.
Çizimler güzel, ama garage band sevdalı gençlerin garajdaki performanslarını müziksiz okumak kifayetsiz oldu, aslında bir rock şarkısı açıp dinleyebilirdim o kısımlarda, misal Leprous. Hikayenin sonu sürpriz içeriyordu ama paldır küldür sona ermesi de bir tatminsizlik yarattı. Vasat bir okuma diyelim ama pişman da değilim.

Gipi'nin çizimleri ve renklendirmesi gayet farklı ve bu mecrada olması gereken biri gerçekten. Bu tip farklı çalışmalara ihtiyacımız var çeşitlilik açısından. Önceki işleri Lokal'den daha iyiydi diyeceğim ancak Karakarga'nın basma sırası farklı olduğundan bu eseri aslında en eski işlerinden arka kapakta da yazdığı gibi Gipi'nin sesini duyurmaya başladığı ilk işi. Karakarga eğer Gipi'nin tüm eserlerini basacaksa eyvallah ama değilse Lokal neden basıldı çok anlamış değilim. Hikayesinde her hangi bir espri olmayan, çok farklı karakter içeren ama hiçbirini detaylandırmayan, müzik tutkunu gençlerin grup kurma çabasını anlatan sıradan hatta vasat altı bir grafik roman. Sanki devamı gelecekmiş gibi yarım kalan bir iş.

Il cielo in una stanza
Vi ricordate la scena finale di Men in black? Quella dove tutto si conclude con dei bambini alieni che giocano a biglie, e con un gigantesco allargarsi del campo visivo scopri che la terra è come una capocchia di spillo, che i pianeti sono puntini luminescenti e la nostra galassia ha appunto le dimensioni di una biglia, proprio la biglia di quei bambini alieni, buttata in una cesta insieme ad altre decine. Mette un po� i brividini a pensarci, al ruolo che abbiamo nell’universo dico, alla frase di Ustinov quando diceva che siamo un foruncolo nel deretano dell’umanità, sì ok, ma l’umanità cos’� a sua volta, forse una briciola di un kebab gigantesco, o un sassolino nelle scarpe di Dio, oppure appunto una biglia per bambini alieni, che ha il solo scopo di intrattenere (loro, mica noi). Poi però, passato il momento serio della riflessione contemplativa e della cosmogonia, che di solito coincide con la seduta in bagno dopo il pranzo di Natale, si fa spallucce e si sorride, perché anche se fosse così, fossimo anche la paletta per raccogliere gli escrementi di un cane alieno, la verità è che per noi la terra è tutto il mondo, il nostro mondo, e checché se ne dica, è il nostro rifugio. Ciò che ci importa di quel che accade al di là dei suoi confini, ci importa fino a un certo punto, l’importante è che lei continui a fare il suo sporco dovere di grembo materno.
Così è per tutti. Ma quando vai a osservare il dettaglio, pur rimanendo intatto il concetto, le proporzioni si adattano alle necessità e alla misura del singolo. Se per l’umanità la terra è casa, per l’uomo, anche quello che non deve chiedere mai, casa è sinonimo di focolare, uno spazio tra quattro mura dove si raccolgono gli affetti più cari. Ma per il giovane, quello coi brufoli e tutta la vita davanti, ah quello sì che è un problema.
L’adolescente che è già grande per capire quasi tutto, ma non ha nessuna esperienza di come si faccia quel tutto, ha quasi sempre problemi di convivenza con chi non sia della sua età. Genitori, parenti, affiliati familiari, sono importanti e necessari, ma per predisposizione naturale gli manca la capacità di comprendere il viavai di idee e sentimenti di un ragazzo. Quindi occorre qualcosa di proprio, di intimo, uno spazio che non possa essere contaminato dall’assurda serietà quotidiana degli adulti: la stanza. La propria stanza. Quella che sta sempre con la porta chiusa anche quando all’interno, l’attività più imbarazzante che si svolge è guardare il soffitto.
E se poi per una grandissima botta di culo, capitasse mai la fortuna di avere a disposizione una stanza a parte, fuori da casa, che so, un magazzino, una bicocca, una palafitta, qualsiasi cosa sia al riparo dai germi dei coscienziosi adulti, allora quella è la stanza per eccellenza. Questa è la stanza di Gipi. Un luogo dove si condensa un mondo intero. Un ricovero per le promesse e per le illusioni, una dimora per lo sconforto e le attese. C’� spazio per tutto, per cantare, per sfogare la rabbia e le delusioni, per essere cinici, per prendersi in giro. E c’� in sottofondo, un colore acquerelloso che dà sempre sul giallino, un giallino tipo sabbia, un giallino potenziale, che può diventare spiaggia e scherzo tra le onde, o cielo di fagiani e aeroplanini telecomandati.
O ancora giallino tramonto, quando sfuma verso il rosso, e ti prende quello struggimento da nodo in gola senza sapere il perché, come quando la giovinezza si trasforma in responsabilità, e non ne hai coscienza fino a quando non scopri che la stanza, baluardo delle tue speranze sta cedendo, e te ne serve una ancora più grande, e c’� una certa profusione di gioia e ottimismo, perché i desideri si fanno più grandi, ma ancora non sai che quando ti serve più di una stanza, allora sì, che l’innocenza degli anni verdi è finita. Ma quel giallino lì, quello ti rimane sempre dentro.
Vi ricordate la scena finale di Men in black? L’adolescente che è già grande per capire quasi tutto, ma non ha nessuna esperienza di come si faccia quel tutto, ha quasi sempre problemi di convivenza con chi non sia della sua età. Genitori, parenti, affiliati familiari, sono importanti e necessari, ma per predisposizione naturale gli manca la capacità di comprendere il viavai di idee e sentimenti di un ragazzo. Quindi occorre qualcosa di proprio, di intimo, uno spazio che non possa essere contaminato dall’assurda serietà quotidiana degli adulti: la stanza. La propria stanza. Quella che sta sempre con la porta chiusa anche quando all’interno, l’attività più imbarazzante che si svolge è guardare il soffitto.
E se poi per una grandissima botta di culo, capitasse mai la fortuna di avere a disposizione una stanza a parte, fuori da casa, che so, un magazzino, una bicocca, una palafitta, qualsiasi cosa sia al riparo dai germi dei coscienziosi adulti, allora quella è la stanza per eccellenza. Questa è la stanza di Gipi. Un luogo dove si condensa un mondo intero. Un ricovero per le promesse e per le illusioni, una dimora per lo sconforto e le attese. C’� spazio per tutto, per cantare, per sfogare la rabbia e le delusioni, per essere cinici, per prendersi in giro. E c’� in sottofondo, un colore acquerelloso che dà sempre sul giallino, un giallino tipo sabbia, un giallino potenziale, che può diventare spiaggia e scherzo tra le onde, o cielo di fagiani e aeroplanini telecomandati.
O ancora giallino tramonto, quando sfuma verso il rosso, e ti prende quello struggimento da nodo in gola senza sapere il perché, come quando la giovinezza si trasforma in responsabilità, e non ne hai coscienza fino a quando non scopri che la stanza, baluardo delle tue speranze sta cedendo, e te ne serve una ancora più grande, e c’� una certa profusione di gioia e ottimismo, perché i desideri si fanno più grandi, ma ancora non sai che quando ti serve più di una stanza, allora sì, che l’innocenza degli anni verdi è finita. Ma quel giallino lì, quello ti rimane sempre dentro.

Questa è la stanza è un libro a fumetti di Gipi pubblicato nel 2005. Come l'altro suo libro di cui ho scritto qui (LMVDM: La mia vita disegnata male), ha molto di autobiografico. Lo si scopre leggendo la postfazione dell'autore, ammantata da una certa dose di tristezza, ma si capisce anche scorrendo le pagine e leggendo i dialoghi che risultano così naturali tra i giovani protagonisti della storia.
E qual'è la storia? Quattro giovani amici con la passione per la musica trovano finalmente una stanza dove poter suonare. Gliela dà il padre del bassista: è una specie di stalla in un terreno dove tiene i suoi cani da caccia, e i patti sono chiari. Potranno usare la stanza se si comporteranno bene, al primo sgarro se ne dovranno andare.
Diciamo che conoscendo le vicissitudini personali di Gipi, e data la premessa, è chiaro che la felicità del primo capitolo del libro non potrà durare, ma bisogna dare atto all'autore di aver confezionato una storia semplice e realistica, che si sviluppa in maniera naturale e che alla fine lascia una sensazione positiva più che di tristezza o malinconia.
E soprattutto trasmette un'energia fuori dal comune. Il libro è organizzato in cinque capitoli, che però sono definiti canzoni, come se fosse una demo incisa su audiocassetta di un gruppo punk (come quello a cui danno vita i protagonisti). Tutti e quattro i componenti del gruppo sono ben caratterizzati nonostante il poco testo e i dialoghi scarni, grazie alle interazioni con i genitori, con la ragazza di uno di loro, e coi pochi altri personaggi esterni al loro circolo.
Molto curioso, poi, il modo in cui Gipi ha voluto dar vita alla musica attraverso i suoi disegni. Invece di disegnare le vibrazioni delle onde sonore (alla Scott Pilgrim, per citare un esempio), ha preferito disegnare i corpi e gli strumenti dei suonatori in preda ad una foga primordiale, all'estasi data dalla musica suonata a tutto volume con l'entusiasmo di chi vuole spaccare il mondo. Il risultato è splendido, e a me che ancora oggi suono in un gruppo musicale in una stanza che non passerebbe un'ispezione sanitaria ha trasmesso tantissima energia positiva, e mi ha ricordato di quando cominciai a suonare il basso ormai venti anni or sono...
Questa è la stanza è davvero un bel libro, si legge velocemente ma è piacevole rivisitarlo e sfogliarlo di nuovo grazie ai suoi fantastici disegni, e ammetto di aver letto due o tre volte la postfazione perché colpisce. Gipi è schietto, e scrive apertamente della perdita della madre in seguito alla morte del padre, e di come in quel periodo buio della sua vita abbia disegnato proprio questo libro, con grande fatica. Ammiro anche la sua onestà nell'ammettere che preferirebbe suonare invece di fare il fumettista, ma d'altronde credo che chiunque cambierebbe il proprio lavoro con quello di rockstar senza nemmeno pensarci due volte, no?
E qual'è la storia? Quattro giovani amici con la passione per la musica trovano finalmente una stanza dove poter suonare. Gliela dà il padre del bassista: è una specie di stalla in un terreno dove tiene i suoi cani da caccia, e i patti sono chiari. Potranno usare la stanza se si comporteranno bene, al primo sgarro se ne dovranno andare.
Diciamo che conoscendo le vicissitudini personali di Gipi, e data la premessa, è chiaro che la felicità del primo capitolo del libro non potrà durare, ma bisogna dare atto all'autore di aver confezionato una storia semplice e realistica, che si sviluppa in maniera naturale e che alla fine lascia una sensazione positiva più che di tristezza o malinconia.

A strong 3*
It's not really a complete story; it's a peek into a window of time where a band of friends explore their teenage unlimited ambiton and belief in themselves. They all seek meaning and the upper step on the ladder, where they all feel they deserve to be.
Music is their golden ticket, or so they think. That's all that unites them, really.
Amidst there's normally strange families and the typical disconnect for that age, but no big drama is explored. Feels like it should, but never happens.
There's some light humor, mostly character-driven, since they all have well distinct personalities that come with their treats. That's well explored, in the book.
The other strong aspect of the story is that it feels authentic; these kids could and have certainly existed somewhere, sometime, multiple times, and they all thought they were unique and special and really believed they would change the world and their lives just by trying hard.
In summary, a 3+/4- that many times feels insufficiently explored plot-wise (missed opportunities) and that does not present any kind of closure. This should and could have been decompressed and have the multiple family dynamics come into play. The characters are interesting and distinct and also feel authentic. The pace is balanced and the art is very consistent, whether we like it or not.

Açıkçası Gipi, en sevdiğim çizerlerden biri olsa da bu kitap benim gibi Gipi severler için bir miktar beklentinin altında kalacak cinsten.
Her ne kadar KaraKArga Yayınları bu çizgi romanı 2023'te bassa da, Gipi'nin ilk kitabı bu. Bu yüzden hikaye ve anlatım akışında o alıştığımız Gipi karanlığı tam olarak kendini gösteremiyor. Hikaye genel olarak bir yere gitmiyor. Farklı geçmişlerden gelen 4 gencin bir "lokal" edinme sürecini, müzik yapma süreçlerini anlatıyor. Hepsi bu. 5 şarkılık bir EP formatında kurgulanmış ve 5 bölümün her biri bu adlarla çağrılabilir. Her bölümün vermek istediği net bir duygu var. Aşk, hayal kırıklığı, ihanet, umut adına ne derseniz deyin. Bir Gipi duygusu var. Ama karakterlerin geçmiş hayatlarına dair bir derinlik yok. Gipi'nin alıştığımız psikolojik betimlemeleri, çözümlemeleri yok. Aslında kitapta olan tek bir şey var. Net olarak üslubunu arayan bir Gipi.
Hikayelerinde ve olay örgülerinde otobiyografik şeyler kullanmayı seven Gipi, muhtemelen burada da aynısını yapıyor.
Türkçeye yeni bir Gipi eseri çevrildiği için mutlu muyum? Evet. Kitap beklentilerimi karşıladı mı? Hayır. Diğer Gipi kitapları gibi döne döne tekrar okuyup göz atar mıyım? Hayır.
