Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang by Feng Nong
A Lonesome Fragrance Waiting to be Appreciated
The 3rd and final part of the novel.
One of those rare books I absolutely love and shall love forever and ever. And ever. You get the gist.
This must be one of the best stories I've ever read about loyalty/love.
And it wasn't sappy or cutely or whatever romantic that might make one think it's just some shallow romance made up to look like something grand. Nope. Not at all. THIS is the real deal, I'm telling you!
An epic tale of loyalty and love. Where love is loyalty and loyalty is love. From beginning till the end.
It had an amazing story/plot and characters.
While some things were obvious, duh, they're supposed to be, others one can only guess at.
It had action, romance, battles, friendship, blood, struggles, military tactics, royals, schemes, loyal servants, love, heartbreak, tears, fun, suspense, happiness, strong characters, character growth etc. It really had everything of the best.
It did not have a freaking love triangle, total bullshit or annoying characters. Even the bad guy you could understand and so he wasn't annoying either!
One could see how our characters lived through the years and how everything had it's impact upon their change/growth, no matter how small or big. One really can not just enjoy and live through such stories, but also learn from them.
Lonesome Fragrance will be a story I shall always remember and love & gladly re-read decades from now (thou obviously I'm gonna re-read waaaaay more often, just saying that even when I'll be old & gray I'll still be re-reading it, cuz it's that great XD).
Of course I'd recommend for everyone to read it and if one is not familiar with novels, especially Chinese ones set in historical setting, then Lonesome Fragrance is the best way to start :)

I first read Gu fang Bu Zi Shang (A Lonesome Fragrance Waiting to be Appreciated) in manhua and got tired of waiting for updates so I was happy that it is actually based on a novel written by Feng Nong. This is the first Chinese Historical Romance novel I've read and has become one of my favorite historical romance ever.
Then an unexpected color suddenly leap into the corner of Chu Beijie's eyes.
Chu Beijie stood by the door, slowly raising his eyes. That elegant color in his eyes slowly began to collect into a shape in the depths of his eyes, forming a tiny spark. It seemed to wrestle out some of the sharpness in Chu Beijie's gaze, as if erasing the thick dust with a prick.
Delicate, exquisite, demure and silently standing in the room was something like an endless sparkling light. It shone in every direction, rendering those simple table, chair, window into something with color.
There was only one person, with just a single back view, that could so wonderfully merge heaven and earth.
Probably the most anticipated and beautiful part of the book is when Chu Beijie and Bai Pinting finally see each other after that heart wrenching separation in volume 2. Love how Chu Beijie picks up his son and immediately loves him without even realizing that it was his. Oh, and how funny his reaction was when he couldn't contain his happiness of knowing that he has a son. So many twist and turns has happened to their love that it really does sound unbelievable if a love like this could even exist.
As for He Xia well.. I just find his story excruciatingly sad. He had everything in the beginning to eventually losing his family and home. To eventually losing his beloved Pingting to his most hated enemy. It's so sad, because he started with having a heart of a poet to being a heartless man.

A satisfying ending to this very diverting trilogy.
No spoilers I swear! It was a surprising pleasure to read. No unnecessary twists or out of place decisions by the characters, the final book follows well the growth and changes in the first two novels, bringing them to the peak of their bravery, stubbornness or ambition. The character development as well as the pacing of the battles and lives of our characters are well planned and divertingly written. A mirror to PingTing's personality.
The translation was incredible, especially in the online edition, done by fans. Thank you for your work!
I am glad to have started the year with this series I have waited too long to finish.

The best chapter of this volume is chapter 73!! It was the deciding chapter. I know I should feel sorry for He Xia, but he had it coming already. He had several opportunities to call his craziness off, start life anew, and move on. But he chose to keep digging his grave.
The difference between CBJ and HX in relation to BPT; CBJ didn't see BPT has a possession or an object to have around. He loves and respects her. Unfortunately for HX he got consumed by his blind thirst for revenge.

4.5 Amazing Stars!
For the past few days while reading this book, I think I've ridden in a chaotic and wild roller-coaster thrashing my emotions everywhere. Gah! The first book was definitely my favorite :) The pacing was good, the plot was amazing and there were twists and turns that keep you on your toes. Most importantly, there was humor and romance in it. For a girl (or for me only), I think books with battles and war are dull without this two essential things.
The second installment was a whole lot on the dark side. I mentioned on my review that that book was depressing and the pacing was painfully slow. The plot was centered on tragedy, betrayal and death leaving little room for a bit of happiness to enter. My thoughts for the second book are sumarized as this: Dammit! Bai Pingting and Chu Beijie! I am begging you please just end up together and end my agony!
But, I love the ending. Generally, I hate
In the third book, the pace was good and though some twists were predictable it was really a great conclusion. There was once again humor and the liveliness in the book was once again restored. The plot wasn't so heavy but it is still bloody. After so many days of reading depressing lines from He Xia, I feel like a heavy weight was lifted from my chest. The author gave the best and might be the only ending suitable for the series.
Now, for the characters, let's start with Bai Pingting. What I like most about my girls is that they are smart, independent, and a kick-ass heroine. Pingting is definitely one of them except for the kick-ass part but can be forgiven. I love that she can go against famous generals (ahem! Beijie) in a war and leave unscathed. It's good that she was able to show more of her witty side in the third book. She's not beautiful but she is fierce.
But what I love the most is that she is definitely in command of her man. Beijie may be a god-like warrior but Pingting is definitely her goddess. Until the end, you can see that Pingting is stronger than Beijie.
"Let them know that the one thing they must never do is offend their most beloved woman."
Famed as one of the strongest and smartest general, Chu Beijie is a treasure in the Dong Lin nation, which is a direct enemy nation of Bai Pingting's Gui Le. Chu Beijie is one of those heroes who you think has it all. Good looks, rich, fierce, smart, strong and romantic... but still he is not perfect. He also makes stupid judgments when it comes to love although in my opinion he is the one who held the relationship together. If it wasn't for his deep love for Pingting (cause Pingting did A LOT of stupid things. If I were Beijie, I wouldn't be able to forgive her), I think the story would have ended pretty early.
I love Pingting and Beijie but I love Fanlu and Zuiju more! Maybe because the characters of Zuiju and Fanlu are more realistic. But nevertheless, I love the four's playful banter and character growth.
As for He Xia, despite him being intelligent he is emotionally unstable. The relationship between him and Pingting got ugly real fast. He is mad with revenge and once he started he doesn't know when to stop. He Xia was very frustrating!
But despite all that he is a very complex character. I love how the author portrayed him as the villain but there are parts of him that you just want to hug. Oh, he is definitely bad alright but he is also pitiful. My feelings towards this person is ambivalent.
I read the English translated version and I am very thankful for Chinatown KM for translating it. Although there were multiple errors in grammar and a lot of times the names of the characters were interchanged or wrong, it was very easy to read. There were even notes at the end of every chapter explaining some of the phrases or terms used. Reading the translators' notes greatly helped in understanding the story.
Again, Gu Fang bu Zi Shang is a a great novel to read. :) A well deserved 4.5 stars.
