I loved this story. I liked it so much more than Hunt's Newberry winner - Up a Road Slowly. I thought the family dynamic was believable, moving, and tender. All of the people in this family needed each other. This book brought me to tears and to laughter - my favorite kind of story.

It's not a very realistic read but I found it rather touching. If only all 12 year old boys were as kind and hard working as William. He shows wisdom far beyond his years.

I read this in elementary school, and recently found a copy online to read to my children.
