The Fox and the Dryad

Rate this book
Briar Hunt has always been lauded for his grace on stage, except by one person from whom he wants it the most. Desperate to earn the affection he craves, Briar makes a late night deal with a high fey lady: If he can perform a single perfect dance at one of her woodland revels, she will make him the most enchanting thing on two legs.

However, Briar quickly learns the fey lady is impossible to please. Not only that, her demands are never-ending, enough to slowly unravel his life and his health. Only when a handsome stranger, Mal, arrives claiming he can help Briar break his deal and earn his freedom back, does Briar think he might be saved.

Lord Malric d'Alarie has finally broken free of dancing on command for his mother at her fey revels. But after hearing he's been replaced, he attends one of her parties to see for himself. The human performing in his place is breathtaking--but Malric dreads what kind of deal the dancer made with his mother in order to be there.

Wanting to rescue Briar from the same woman who stole his own love for ballet, Malric inserts himself into Briar's life from every angle possible. From posing as a dance instructor in the human world to hiding behind a mask in the fey world, Malric promises he can set Briar free of his fateful deal. Malric only has to keep his identity--and his intentions--secret, from both the dancer he's quickly falling for, and his mother, who controls their every move.

Me again! Cover artist and author's spouse here! I'm so excited we can finally share the cover for TFAD, I hope you all love it!

TFAD feels like a classical ballet, even though its set in a familiar, modern world. Filled with whimsical magic and tragic betrayals, Briar and Mal weave through the story like dancers across a stage.

If you loved Holly Black's "The Darkest Part of the Forest" but want something genre-appropriate for adults, you'll love this~

Everybody knows by know that fantasy is so not my cup of tea but you tell me how can anyone resist THAT cover! And also, I have a weakness for femme characters,delicate,long-haired MCs 😍
This book was so captivating I simply couldn’t put it down. And I can’t even say that it was perfect because it wasn’t, on the contrary, it had some things that quite bothered me and annoyed me to no end and yet despite of all I loved it. I loved Briar and Mal sooooooo much gahhh 😍. Briar who was such a prickly drama queen, shy and vain at the same time . And Mal, who started off as a creep lol but who tried his best for Briar. I was mad at him a lot of the times because he lied to Briar for too long- he had a lot of opportunities to come clean and he should have done it before sleeping with him. He was a bit oblivious and reckless and so, unintentionally while trying to save Briar, he hurt him .
The writing is beautiful if a bit too wordy, flowery (especially towards the end) and there isn’t a very rich and well explained world building-some details were glossed over and left unexplained (this being the 4th book in this universe probably has something to do with it) but what I can’t for the life of me understand is why the author kept shoving brand names and designer stuff in our face. Like, this is a fantasy world why would a Fey care who made their clothes?? I was very much decided to take away a star just for that but you know…I don’t want to 🤣 because
I adored them together, I really did. Mal caring for Briar and Briar so prickly and hesitant and wary yet he melted when Mal nurtured him , something about them spoke to me, touched my heart *sighs.
So yeah, in case you couldn’t tell I loved this book, it has magic and ballet (It was amazing learning stuff about ballet. I even went to YouTube to watch the pieces they danced in the book) , it has cool side characters, some angst and action and just enough hot sex to keep you satisfied.
And most of all it has 2 flawed guys who I wanted to smack from time to time. It’s also got a lot of emotions and feelings and Briar’s cruel fate made me tear up. Poor baby, he cried so much during this ordeal. 🥺

UPDATE : Apparently the author mentioned on Instagram that Briar used both pronouns.

PD* I was a bit confused (and annoyed) about the fact that in the beginning the author chose to not assign a particular gender to Briar and everybody referred to him using “they but then , throughout the book and from time to time “they was dropped and “he was used frequently. It was really bothersome.

Pretty fey story. Flowery, wordy writing. Briar is a brat. Mal is a creep. 9 siblings??! This being half in the human world, half in the fey world meant not a lot of world building but what was there was interesting. Very visual. I enjoy reading about ballet. The storyline was predictable and some things were a bit too easily explained away by the fae magic, but maybe I’m just too skeptical and not whimsical enough 🤔 I didn’t really gel with either character but I appreciated their relationship turmoil. The frequent mention of designer clothes brands annoyed me enough me to mention here, felt so out of place in a fantasy novel.

Things this book did to me:

1. Made me more feral for needing more Kellen-written books

2. Made me feral for the MC’s (literally didn’t think I could be more feral than my love for sweet baby angels Saffron & Cylvan but consider me rizzed by Mal and Bry because they literally killed me)

3. Made me re-read certain paragraphs just to feel the sentences again as they struck my heart muscle and made my insides warm (literally ew, so gross, I had so many feelings)

4. I literally vocally screamed in my house because I felt upset that it was over. I slammed the book on my table (respectfully) out of frustrated love 😂

5. Made me painfully aware the book hangover after this is gonna take me a few days. I couldn’t read anything for 3 days after LOSA (and I read every day without fail)

6. Made me physically have to put the book down at the end of some chapters because I didn’t want to read it all in 2 days and have it be over. But I was so BALLS DEEP, I would think about it when I was lying awake (wow I’m realising how crazy I am, but I’m okay with it)

Kellen is a literary whizz, and they will have my support for everything they produce in the coming years and I WILL NOT HEAR A BAD WORD OR SEE A BAD REVIEW, BECAUSE IF YOU DONT AGREE, YA LITERALLY WRONG.

my kind of sport romance is when the romance is queer 💗 and the sport is ballet 🩰

This book is adorable, romantic, and aesthetically pleasing, with an underlying theme of ✨trauma Basically, just my type of book 😌

I had a love hate relationship with Briar in the beginning, but then I realised it’s because they reminded me of younger me, she was also a spoiled little brat who cried all the time (the second part is still true 🥲). Briar is iconic and I ended up loving their bratty sassy ass 💗🩰

Mal had the opposite effect on me. I started drooling over this perfect book boyfriend and ended up not liking him as much. He had soo many chances to tell Briar the truth but he was being selfish and arrogant - like he keeps thinking that everything is going to be all g? Bro come on 🙄

But I actually love that they are imperfect and that their relationship is also imperfect. I think their love is rooted in guilt and desperation, but who wants to read about a boring healthy relationship?? Not me 🤷🏻‍♀

The stand out of this book is the writing for me. It is the perfect balance of flowery writing and getting the point across. The writing is perfection. No notes. I’m obsessed with Kellen Graves’s style.

The storyline itself is also enjoyable and just entertaining! I think there are a couple of plot holes, but I just brushed it off to ✨fae magic and got over it quickly enough.

Overall, it was a good time and the vibe was immaculate. I just love me some femme and masc combo 🤭💕

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC! This review is entirely my own thoughts and opinions.

As a massive fan of Kellen Graves work I was so excited to get stuck into more of their work and venture back into the romantic, deadly and indulgent world they’ve created.

The Fox and the Dryad follows the story of Malric, a fey lord who has finally worked his way free of his overbearing mother’s clutches and is trying his best to make his way in the world. Once upon a time, he was a dancer, forced to use his skills to please his mother, along with his talented siblings. But when he finds out his former place as a star performer at his mother’s revels has been replaced by a human, he begins to worry what kind of deal the human has made to find themselves in his mother’s clutches.

Desperate to dance for someone beautiful, Briar makes a dangerous bargain with a fey woman. If he wants his wish to be granted he only needs to perform one perfect dance at her revels. But that’s a lot easier said than done, and if there’s one thing the fey love, it’s a bargain that works in their favour alone.

From the first page I was immediately drawn into the world of Malric and Briar, and loved how the story switched between the human world and the fey. Both Malric and Briar were wonderfully well developed characters and I found myself sympathising with Briar especially. He’s prickly and defensive, eager to make their way in the world and determined to do it on their own. I found his POVs to be both hilarious and heartbreaking as he struggled to free himself of their bargain and slowly start to fall in love with Malric. Briar was such a complex, viscerally real character and Graves really proved how capable they are of writing complex, unique characters that really jump off the page.

In contrast, Malric had a lot clearer motivations and a smoother character arc, which I found to be a wonderful contrast to Briar’s more prickly demeanour. I loved their dynamic and it was wonderful to see both of them overcome each and every wall that cropped up in their way.

Like the Rowan Blood series, TFATD kept me interested all the way through. The plot is twisty and full of sweet and shocking moments alike. I loved the ballet elements and thought the side characters were a wonderful addition. The body horror elements were also something I really enjoyed, especially as someone who doesn’t necessarily gravitate towards horror. Briar’s pronouns (he/they) were used very seamlessly and (as with all of Kellen’s work) the characters queerness was intrinsic, natural and inclusive.

Overall, I’d highly recommend the Fox and the Dryad for anyone looking for a queer, contemporary fantasy standalone with remarkably real characters and a plot that will remain with you long after the final page. It’s always an honour reading Kellen’s work and this was no different thank you!

Perfection was only found in exchange for gentleness. Perfection was only given with promise of gentleness.

Literally on my knees crying for these gay ballerinas. This is the perfect romcom, set in the modern-day Rowan Blood universe.

Putting all the plot from this book in a stand-alone and doing it so well is not an easy feat and Kellen Graves executed it brilliantly. I loved the way Briar’s pronouns were integrated seamlessly into the narrative (he/they, for those wondering) and the double POV made the reading even better, something we don't have in the main Rowan Blood series. Seeing first hand how pathetic and ridiculous Malric is definitely added to the experience.

Kellen’s writing makes you feel and experience the ballet scenes even if you’re not familiar with the score nor the choreography (although I highly recommend watching the performances on YouTube) or even don't have any ballet knowledge at all. By the end of the book I was already looking up adult beginners classes in my city.

And the plot, oh, the plot. Something so beautiful and simple as the lengths you would go for someone you love, and the consequences of it. To the surprise of no one, I'm completely obsessed with this story and its characters, from their love of designer clothes to their difficulty with opening up and asking for help. Might've made my mommy issues worse, but that was completely worth it. I'll just talk about this in therapy next week. [/hj]

He and Briar Hunt, hand in hand, would rent the veil apart irreparably.

As a Rowan Blood freak fan, all the little bits and pieces of new worldbuilding information were delicious and so well placed that it didn't feel heavy in a modern-setting stand-alone in which the worldbuilding was not the main focus of the plot. I also never thought I could be this feral about another couple after Cylsaf, but boy they found some good competition with Malric and Briar. Something about himbo fey lords just messes with my heart.

I went through all of my highlights to find good quotes for this review and now I’m even more determined to find a solution for the Twitter quote bot (and to reread this book as soon as possible), The Fox and The Dryad is simply filled with delicious quotes, just like everything Kellen writes.

Thank you so much Kellen for this eARC in exchange for an honest review, I’m forever grateful for everything you write, this book was simply a delight <3

I feel like I don't have enough vocabulary to express how much I loved this book and that the translator doesn't do justice to everything I feel after finishing it. Eventually, I will never recover. But here is humble opinion.

When you suffer, laugh, cry, become upset, love, hate, feel, and become angry with the characters, the book is a 5 star!I know we are still in February, but knowing myself, this book will definitely be one of my favorites in 2023.

I just simply adore Kellen's writing, world building, attention to detail, the incredible tenderness with which each character is treated, and the way they approach their relationships, which are so beautiful but raw, magical but at the same time real.

This is an Urban Fantasy Romance, between a Smug High Fey Lord and a ballet instructer while also being the missing son of the fey lady who traps the Bratty Sassy human ballet dancer. Prepare for Skelly Angst as usual, fey deals gone wrong, omg, so wrong, some designer clothes addicts, and some intense ballet shenanigans. I guarantee HEA, but the hurt and comfort in this book reach places unknown to me. They give Briar and Malric the love story they need and deserve.

I loved their whole relationship, the comments and sassy remarks along the way. Mal is so smug but so adorable and genuinely concerned about Briar. Briar is so suspicious of everything and everyone, yet so in need of adoration and appreciation, yet he cannot resist the fox's charms, because that's exactly what Evil does, adore and cherish Briar. The development of their relationship is sometimes harrowing but filled with so much feeling.

I can't stop thinking about how brilliantly the intimate scenes were portrayed...Wow, Kellen, just wow! I was literally there like a damn creep....

We have incredible characters, with roles that are very well played and that follow the story perfectly.
Side note: I'd love to know more about Mal's siblings...

I have a tendency to highlight a lot while reading, but this book it was just over the top... I couldn't stop myself from highlighting everything because it was all so beautiful, full of incredible quotes, and richly visual. And mood boards i build? Damn so rich and perfetc!

Quoting Mal's words about the Briar, my opinion about this book is simply this "You’re
perfect,You’ll always be perfect."

I received an ARC from Kellen and this is my honest, heartfelt opinion!

4'5 stars 🤍

Perfection was only found in exchange for gentleness. Perfection eas only given with promise of gentleness. And no one would ever worship the perfection of Briar Hunt, or provide him all the gentleness of the world, the way Malric d'Alarie would. For do long as he lived.

I'm sobbing screaming punching air smiling crying.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH OMG???? BRIAR AND MAL HAVE MY WHOLE SOUL I ADORE THEM.

This book has been in my tbr for a rlly long time and I can't believe i didn't read it sooner. The writing was beautiful, the vibes are just magical and the characters >>>>>. The only reason I don't give it 5 full stars is because in some parts it was a bit slow to me, and maybe a few pages less would make it perfect. BUT i swear this books is really worth it.

I will read the rest of the books of this author because oh my.

What a beautifully written story. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and the flow and descriptive writing style is just so gorgeous and poetic. I’m not usually a poetry kind of person, but I love these books, no doubt. This one was full of angst and deceit so it was equal parts beautiful and nerve wracking.

Briar made a deal that he shouldn’t have and pays for it in the worst ways. Mal is a stranger that knows how to help him, from personal experience. While Briar seeks perfection, Mal is running from it. These two together are so funny. Briar is a little spitfire with sharp claws, like a feral little kitten, and Mal is on the receiving end of those claws a lot but seems to take it in stride. Their banter is so good and it was just so fun to read.

Will definitely be reading more from this author.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

If Kellen writes it, I am reading it ASAP so obviously I went into this with high expectations, yet somehow it exceeded what I had in mind going into this.

This is a classical case of judge a book by its cover bc the content of The Fox and The Dryad mirrors the insanely beautiful cover, so you know you’re in for a treat.

Obviously, I knew this would be different from the main series since this is a stand alone, so there would be a change in tone and I think this book profited a lot from this.
Reading it there were so many moments that just felt so silly in the most positive way possible, and made it just so F U N.
However, even though there was a change of tone, it never lost all the aspects that make me love Kellens writing as much as I do.

To a certain degree I always had the main series in the back of my mind and drew comparisons, which made TFAD really really stand out. It felt like the author had a lot more fun writing this and just letting everything fold out and including these moments that were so small yet added so much to the characters.
Getting to know them the way I did in just one book was INCREDIBLE. They have a lot to live up to because the characterization in Kellen‘s books is always so strong so I was a pleasantly surprised to fall in love with Briar and Malric as much as I did. I literally am going to pick them up, put them in my pocket and steal them.
PLUS it is insane how much life Kellen managed to put into all the side characters. They were so fleshed out and alive and I am on my knees begging for more. Always more haha.

Besides the amazing characterization, the plot has me in a death grip.
When it comes to stand alone books there is a fine line between having too little going on and too much so it becomes very crammed. This however? Perfect. Just enough to make it fully realized without having it packed with pages upon pages of crammed action.
In addition, the ending was beautifully concluded and hit that perfect spot where it left me wanting for more because their story was just so captivating without leaving unnecessary open ends that would drag the experience down.

So all in all, to sum up, I shall be eating a physical copy of this book, maybe laser it onto my brain.

Fortunately, I had the wonderful opportunity to be ARC of this fantastic book and I am so happy I was able to read it beforehand because it is awesome, and I will be re-reading it very soon.

Coming from the first two books of Kellen Graves I thought it would be a very painful book, with a lot of mixed emotions. Certainly there is, however this is the perfect comfort book for those looking for a romantic and spicy lgtb story. It is the perfect combination of angst and spicy content, all of that mixed in a reading atmosphere that makes you feel like if you were inside of a fairy tale.

This book takes place in the same universe as Rowan Blood does, but if you haven't read the previous books of Rowan Blood, don't let that stop you from reading this one. Everything is explained thoroughly. The reader is taken to the human world and makes us explore more deeply how complex the relationships between the human world and the fey world actually are in this universe.

The chemistry between Malric and Briar is scorching, the scenes between them gave me butterflies. The descriptions of the dance scenes made me overflow with excitement and made me emotional.

I do have to warn about some scenes of mild body horror. It is very light, but just so that you keep that in mind.

Kellen never disappoints, their work is amazing and the fact that it's a stand alone book is my only complaint about this beautiful story. Highly recommended, you won't regret reading this book.

Perfection was only given with promise of gentleness.

At this point I will read anything Kellen Graves puts out. February cannot come fast enough!
Also Kellen Graves, if you're looking for a beta reader or someone to send an ARC to I am always available *wink wink*

Update:
I DID GET AN ARC I'M SO EXCITED OMG

This ARC was provided to me by the author in exchange of an honest review, all opinions expressed are entirely my own

Review:
Did it take me 6 months to read this book? Yes, but I can explain!
I moved to a completely new continent, and started school again after a 3 years long break, I barely could squeeze in time to read!
Now enough of my excuses and on to this review.

If I had to describe this book in one sentence it would be "Perfectly heartbreaking in the best way possible". Yes, I am aware how contradictory that sentence is, it's the only one I could use to describe this though.

The Fox and The Dryad tells the story of Malric, the son of a cruel, emotionally manipulative fey lady and Briar, a human dancer who finds himself entangled in the intricacies of fey deals and the fey world.
This book is so beautifully written as are all of Kellen Grave's books are, but in a sense it felt more magical and enchanting than the other Rowan Blood books, there's something about the characters and the meeting of the two worlds that took the beauty of this book to a whole other level.
It was also as heartbreaking as it was beautiful, there were moments where I would read a passage and my heart would break to the point where I need to take a break from reading for a few days before I can continue.

There's something about how this author writes their characters and their emotions that is just so hauntingly beautiful. I felt every single moment of hurt and panic and agony Mal and Briar went through, which made my attachment to them even stronger. In fact my bond to these characters was so strong that it didn't matter how long it took me to get back to this book, I was always pulled back with the same level of interest and enchantment! Which in my opinion speaks a lot to kellen Grave's storytelling and prose.
Idk if they add some crack to their words as they're writing them or what, but whatever they're doing it's working.

Overall, this was one of the best, most magically haunting books I've ever read and I highly recommend it!!

Spicy queer [m/nb] romance book with smut, dancing, angst and fey lords how can you say no!

Now i am a whore for anything this author writes and that continues with this book. This is a standalone book set in the rowan blood series with multiple povs so we get to see how baby girl these characters are.

It takes place in the same universe as the rowan blood series but you dont need to have read them to enjoy this standalone, everything is explained about the world and fae system so you can pick up this one first if you don't want to start a series! [however i highly recommend it from someone who is normally anti series]

We follow Malric who is a fey lord who has freed himself from the grasp of his mother who forced him to dance for her entertainment as well as use all his other siblings. He escapes to the human world where he meets a human called Briar who has become his replacement and is now forced to dance for his mother and cannot get out of this fey deal. Malric is determined to help the human he is smitten for while also dealing with breaking his own fey deal trying to save himself and Briar. We see this plot take place from POVS of the main characters where Briar gets themselves into a deal he cannot escape and cannot get the wish they was promised.

I really liked how different these characters were and how different their povs were and how they interacted with each other through their povs. Briar been very prickly and angsty while Malric gives puppy vibes. And all the side characters were amazing and really fleshed out and had their own personalities which I loved. Its a really fun read while still having great angst that Kellen is known for with it been a standalone we see the angst all come together and get the happy ending we hope and pray for in kellens other work.

I have been pondering for a while what score should I give this thing, because I quite liked it at first but, as the story progressed, I realized the enchantment I had with it was dissapearing easily.
Let me explain here what happened.
I quite liked the premise, and the first chapters looked promising. I enjoyed the change of perspective and found interesting the fact there´s a fey world and a human world which they are separated but the existence of this supernatural creatures is normalized. I also loved the characterization of Malric´s mother, who barely appears in the beginning but you still get a sense of how dreadful she is just by hearing other characters talk about her and their reaction to her.
Now, the problem I had with this book I think it was more a thing of personal taste than a blatant "this book is so bad" (mainly because it isn´t). There was a few things done plotwise that I wouldn´t have done and therefore I did not enjoy reading.
An example?

BEAUTIFUL

Kellen Graves has done it again. They’ve crafted two characters that surprised me at every turn - whether it was with wit, charm, cunning, sarcasm, or *gentle tenderness* - ensuring that even when there was a lull in the action, one was still enthralled by characters themselves.

Speaking of the characters, Briar Hunt. Bugbear. Rosefinch. Appreciator of all things high fashion.
A prickly sass-bot perfectionist who wraps themself in thorns as a defense mechanism who embarrassed easily and is stubborn AF but really deep down needs the right person to slice those thorns away and just be there - WAS AMAZING.

Then there was Fey Lord, Malric D’Alerie. Master Mal. Annoyance that Briar just can’t seem to shake. He had my heart from the beginning. The perfect balance of confident arrogance and learned self awareness that prevented him from turning into a completely selfish jerk. That allowed him to appreciate briars dancing, not be scared back into the hands of his mother. That confidence also allowed for all Briar’s prickliness toward him be turned into snarky banter which was amazing, they were each others perfect match in every way.

Mals 9 siblings (!!!), Briars moms & younger sisters, and Bianca+Stella, made for a great supporting cast with a chaotic, trusting, hilarious, found family vibe that ALWAYS slaps.

If someone were to ask me what this book made me feel I would describe it as follows: My heart feels a bit like it was taken from me, wrapped in a cozy little blanket, placed in one of those medical mason jars, shook around like a morning protein shake with the aggressiveness of a man who only goes to the gym to dispel is unrelenting rage for life, taken back out, given a little pat on the head, and then finally tucked into a comfortable bed in a room full of plants.

Anyways this book was really sweet and angsty and I loved it and smol bratty Brair has my heart.

—Abajo tenéis la reseña en español

*I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Also english is not my native language, so I apologize for any mistakes you might find in my review.

I have to confess that I'm not a big fan of fantasy standalones because almost everytime, when I finish them, I get the feeling that they lacked depth or the story fell short or was too rushed... However, there are times when the authors manage to squeeze all the plot, worldbuilding, character development and romance in one book so brilliantly that they create little diamonds. And this novel is a clear example.

The Fox and the Dryad was poetic, somber, enchanting and, when Briar and Mal interacted, also witty and funny. Or hot, because OMG the chemistry between them. I really LOVED how their relationship evolved. And how sweet and caring and dumb Mal is, and how bratty and thorny Briar is.

The plot might be simple but it is addictive and oh so beautiful. And although you can imagine what is going to happen, there are some surprises that you don't see coming. The side characters are lovely and well written and they add to the story.
As an artist (a writer) with anxiety I saw myself and felt the struggles of Briar, Malric and his siblings. That aspect was so well portrayed that it clenched my heart, and touched something deep inside me to the point that I shed a few tears more than once.

My Lord. Again, those words in Briar's sweet voice—Malric nearly combusted. He was going to burst into flames, melting his skin and Briar's both, so that they might never be parted from one another ever again. He wanted to sink his nails, his teeth, into every bit of falsely-covered flesh burning warm beneath his hands.

I was already in love with Kellen's writing after reading Prince of the sorrows and Lord of silver ashes, but now I can say that they are one of my favorite authors.

The Fox and the Dryad es poético, sombrío, encantador y, cuando Briar y Mal interactúan, también ingenioso y divertido.

The Fox and The Dryad is a standalone novel within the Rowan Blood universe about a bratty twink and his big ol fey simp, combining a rom-com with body horror in a fantasy setting. I love Briar and Malric, I would do anything for them. When is it my turn to be happy?

TFAD was such a fun read. It held true to a lot of elements of Kellen’s writing, while managing to stand out from the rest of the Rowan Blood series. Despite being much more light-hearted, with a lot of funny moments, it still had its share of Kellen’s signature angsty bits. TFAD gives you enough background to fey lore in this universe that you don’t need to have read the Rowan Blood series so far, but there were a lot of fun callbacks that readers will definitely recognize.

One of my all time favorite elements of Kellen’s writing is how they manage to compose these gorgeous prose-filled sentences, but also throw in phrases that use words like “fucky and “big-ass. It’s fun and it makes them stand out a lot.

This one hit particularly close to home, as someone with raging mommy issues. I found Malric so fucking relatable at times, especially with lines like "Malric couldn't comprehend why anyone wouldn't like him," and The cries of adulation didn't come like he hoped, but he wouldn't let it bruise his ego." He's just like me, for real.

Kellen’s books are an automatic pre order for me at this point. I loved this standalone, and yes, I will continue to talk everyone’s ear off about it. A huge thank you to the author for an eARC of this.

kellen grave has such a unique way of depicting romance and fantasy that i find myself hooked every single time. I have discovered this author with a bone in his teeth, and just like the previous book, this one did not disappoint in the slightest.

the setting in kellen’s stories is always a little dark and gloomy and i find myself having to get used to it at first—but the world building is flawless and the characters depicted always so complex, which only pulls me in deeper once i’ve fully set myself into the story. i have loved learning about briar and mal, i have loved every bit of their relationship from the rivalry to the love story and everything that came before (and after). I love how every relationship in kellen’s stories can be considered a slow burn even as it spans on 400 pages, and how differently they build up every time.

i have nothing else to say but that i had such a good time reading this book and i feel like kellen’s grave might become one of my to go authors in the future.

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I received the ARC on the 1st and already finished the book on the 2nd. Oh my gosh guys- is it good.

Is it queer? YES!

Are they cute together? YES!

Is there trickery, deals, magic, danger, folktales, and everything else we’ve come to love about high fae? YES!

Is there spice? also YES!

description

I have to be honest that I know absolutely nothing about ballet. When Kellen Graves announced they’d be releasing another Rowan Blood novel with different characters and centered around dancing I have to admit I was hesitant on if I’d like it or not. But after reading the first chapter from Kellen’s email subscription, I was completely hooked and had to read more. (Thank you so much for the advanced reader’s copy, Kellen, you made my heart do a backflip!)

Both Malric and Briar have distinct personalities. Are they like Cylvan and Saffron from Kellen’s other novels? No, Malric and Briar have their own dynamic entirely. Their witty, playful banter was constant and enthralling.

“Do you have any more critique for my form, Master Mal?
“I’m sure I can find more if I continue watching, he answered coyly.

Kellen has such a way of writing that is descriptive, delectable, and really captures you in. I was enchanted right along with Malric as he sought after who this mysterious dancer was who replaced him. There are times I laughed, times I was creeped out due to the effects of fae deals going wrong, times my heart couldn’t take their cuteness or their sass. Every chapter leads you into the next and I honestly couldn’t put the book down (or sleep) because I just had to know what they would do next. I had to know how it will end.

Okay, but please read this book! That is all! :)

i probably should have wrote this review while this story was fresher in my mind- but here we are. i remember really enjoying this. it was kinda dense and i was in a slight reading slump, so it took longer than normal to get through, but i enjoyed every second. i forced myself to wait until the fall to read this, and it was so worth it. immaculate fall vibes. main character was a little annoying at times, but it didn't pull me out of the story at all. def recommend :]

I admit that I was quite skeptical about this book, as the "Rowan Blood" trilogy hasn't convinced me that much so far. >-<"
But ... I think I really liked "The Fox And The Dryad?!

Some (or more) things were too cliché for me and others too cheesy, but I ended up loving the story. I especially liked how a deal with a fey affects Briar. What it does to him - psychologically and physically.
All these class and race differences and the "culture" of the fey already captured me in the "Rowan Blood" series and even though it's much more " focused" here (it's mainly about the deal), I found it very exciting again, because this book covered a different aspect.

Briar got on my nerves from time to time with his stubborn behaviour and attitudes, if I'm honest. (Mal was no better though).
I also think their relationship is very unbalanced in terms of giving and taking, but they can work on that in the future ûu

All in all a nice book for in between which was predictable (for me) but very entertaining. <3
