Every time you die, you wake up back in the town.It was supposed to be a simple business trip. Three days tops. But when Jason is unable to leave Riverton, he learns that there's a good reason why the remote town is so well hidden.

Desperate to return home to his wife and daughter, Jason suffers death after death only to wake up back in Riverton. Trapped and unable to contact the outside world, he looks for a way to break the cycle - one that the townsfolk have been ensnared in for years prior to his arrival.

The more he digs, the more dark secrets he uncovers, and the more he realizes how screwed he is. There's something far more sinister hidden behind the townsfolk's gloomy eyes and their vague answers. Something evil rooted deep within the town has its clutches on it.

And it refuses to let go.

A first class supernatural thriller!

This story was an amazing amalgam of horror, sci-fi, quantum physics and the fragility of the human mind. In some ways it reminded me of the classic rock song, "Hotel California" and the lyrics "you may check out but you can never leave" (something like that anyway). This was a multi layered story, highly atmospheric and character driven. In short, it was absolutely brilliant. Probably the best story I have read this year. Highly recommended!

If it scares you, Boris Bacic has more than likely written a story about it. It reminded me of the offerings, like Pet Sematary that we get from Stephen King. Retown is a twisted tale filled with strange occurrences and despair. I had no idea where the story was going, and I was wrong so many times. In the age of so many predictable stories, I admire Boris Bacic's ability to completely throw the reader off without damaging the storyline. There were times throughout that Jason's despair was palpable. I found myself mentally willing him to overcome the forces of Riverton...but had figured out that that was probably not going to happen. I had previously read another book by this author, The Gathering, and thoroughly enjoyed it and this one was not an exception. His characters are often not the nicest people you will have ever met but yet you still want to root for them.

When Jason finds himself in the small, strange town of Riverton on a work assignment, he wants out as soon as possible. Something is off about the whole place and the residents. But Riverton doesn't want to say goodbye to Jason just yet

Another original tale of small town horror from Boris Bacic. Boris has a wide range of horror in his catalogue and leaves no fear untouched. If it scares you, he's probably written a story about it. Retown is a twisting tale filled with strange occurrences and absolute despair. I genuinely didn't know where the story was going, and every guess I made turned out to be wrong. In the age of constantly predictable stories, I love Bacic's ability to completely throw the reader off course without hurting the story in the process. There were times throughout that Jason's despair was palpable and the pages turned themselves while I desperately scanned the words, willing him to overcome the forces of Riverton that worked so cruelly against him. Bacic's prose flow simply but effectively, and even when his characters are not the nicest people you still want to root for them. Great work from one of the new masters of horror!

Oh. My. Gosh. I couldn't put this book down. I was reading on my lunch hour. I snuck in a couple chapters waiting for curb side pick up. A ridiculously addictive read. I want more!!

Okay so I loved the premise of this book. Dude ends up in a creepy small town and then realizes he can’t leave.
The writing was good for the most part! Just a few minor things that were probably more specific to me than anything else.

A few things that threw me off:
-Samantha was described as super manipulative and their relationship was super unhealthy and weird. This kind of makes sense at the end but was so confusing throughout.
-Jason was kind of an asshole and I didn’t actually like him all that much. By the end I didn’t really care what happened to him (though I did still want answers!). Hahah. Even at the beginning he is such an asshole walking into the town and demanding things and never being kind to anyone - just acting on his assumptions about people.
-The SA that happened wasn’t described in detail (thank goodness) but it was pretty horrifying and felt kind of like it came out of nowhere and honestly I don’t think it was needed. I think the author got across how icky the brothers are without that.

Overall I loved the way the town was alive and you could see this through the weird pustules and the weather and the way things would move around. The story felt reminiscent of Wayward Pines but obviously goes a very different direction and the author did a great job of doing his own thing throughout and not having to feel like anything else in any way that felt weird.
The ending was ambiguous relating to why things were the way they were and I appreciated that the author didn’t try to overly explain everything and take us way out of the story.

Pretty good book and fun story. Would recommend.

Jason leaves his family, goes on a business trip to a small town and find that the town is full of people who are offput and unwelcoming. There were a lot of ups and downs, lot of shock and emotion. It was a great story and I had trouble stopping reading when I needed to. It really hooks you! This was my first book by this author and I can't wait to check out more because this was so awesome, unexpected, and different from anything I've read before.

I have read a few books from this author and I have enjoyed each of them. His other books that I have read were scary to some degree but this one was more strange than scary. This small town with hostile residents is much like the line from Hotel California-"you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave". It was compelling and kept me turning pages to try and figure out what was going on. I didn't like the protagonist though. I thought maybe we weren't meant to like him as I was reading. But in the end things didn't come to fruition as I was expecting so I'm not sure why he was such an unlikeable character. I'm okay with the ending and how things played out but it wasn't completely satisfying.

I loved this book, Omg! It's one of those books that you'll want to never stop reading, I really love the whole concept, I love books that go outside the norm but explain everything well to. Very good book. I received this as an ARC and voluntarily choose to reveiw.

Note to the Author: I'm sorry I'm just reviewing this now but this is a really hard month for me.

Wait, I’m done? Am I really done with this fucking book? I knock out books quick but this one dragged on forever. So many things don’t make sense or were contradictory. Very repetitive and not in the way it’s meant to be. The two stars are only because it was such an interesting idea. Great idea, slow execution.

Boris does it again. My absolute favorite trope is “stuck in a town you cant leave and this one was great. I was absolutely not expecting the twist. Jason was insufferable but it worked well with the story. I want another book written as a prequel to explain how Riverton came to be.

Ok, first of all: I liked it a lot. The pacing, slow-burn at first, then fast paced. However, I did not like the ending. I was expecting something different and I wasn’t satisfied with the answers I got. I still have so many questions. That’s why I decided to give 4 stars instead of 5.

Jason, who is married and has a daughter, has to go on a business trip. To a small town named Riverton. However this small town is full of secrets, and when you die, you come right back. Jason is desperately trying to escape, to go back to his wife and daughter. But Riverton does not let him go.

4.5 ⭐️

Wow this was a total mindfuck. Twists and turns galore.

I just found myself repeating “This poor man this poor man and what the fuck what the fuck…

Bacic did an incredible job keeping the atmosphere bleak and driving the feeling of no escape into the reader.

This was solid. 👍🏻

Couldn’t go higher than 4.4, still, really great book. I had some minor issues with the main character and his “everyone else is the problem attitude and the choice made at the end but main characters can be assholes. I thought the story itself was well done and the twists were great albeit sometimes a bit on the nose. Nadia deserved better, that’s all imma say.

Retown, Caution, it may not let you leave.

If you've read any of my previous reviews, you know that I am a fan of Boris Bacic's writings. He always seems to bring an extra level of creep to each event. In Retown, he touched several other feelings that may not be the same for other readers. As Hemingway mused, every reader brings his own experiences into a story. For me, Bacic touched many of my own experiences above and beyond the intended storyline.
I think the creep factor is very high for Retown. Don't let it swallow you up. If it does, don't ask why.

This is one of those novels that just grabs you and won't let you go. And our protagonist feels much the ame. Jason was just sent out on a business trip, 2-3 days at the most. Riverton is a somewhat remote community, and it was completely new to Jason. Jason soon discovers something very horrible about Riverton. Everyone dies in Riverton. Everyone. But then everyone comes back, and it keeps happening over and over again. Maybe these people want to stay and keep repeating this cycle, but Jason wants to go home. He wants to find out how to get out of this horrible place, but the more questions he asks the more lies he feel the people are telling him. He keeps digging, and he keeps dying. There is something very evil here, but the people of Riverton are not telling what they did to allow this evil in, and they will not tell Jason what he needs to do to get out. And the cycle keeps repeating. This is one of those books that you do not want to put down. This is one of those books that you cannot put down. This is one of those books that you do not dare to close your eyes. This story gripped me from the first page, and it squeezed me tight until I finished the last page, and then it lingered. If you enjoy horror, you have got to read this novel. It is made for you. I received this novel from the author with no obligation to provide a review. This is my true and honest review.

Cant.Put.It.Down.

**Absolutely 0 spoilers in this review.**

Let me start by saying, I downloaded this book the moment I got notified it was available. I finished it less than 48 hours later, and it took me almost as long to fully process.

Even writing this review has taken me over an hour to write, because I can’t begin to collect my thoughts, and I mean this in the most positive way possible.

From the very first page you feel as though you are a bystander in the mind of the main character. I have always loved the writing style of the author, Boris Bacic. But I immediately knew we were in for something different within the first few pages.

Just when you think you understand what’s going on, you flip the page and are once again questioning everything you thought you knew. Finally an ending you can’t immediately predict.

You’re left with the same devastation, anxiety, and unsureness as Jason throughout the entire story.

I can not recommend this book enough. My only warning is; when you decide to read this book, prepare to cancel your plans for the next 48 hours, as there is not a single “good place to pause. Every sentence leaves you needing to know more.
10/10 would 10000% read again.

2 1/2 stars

Let me start by saying I really hate leaving a low review. Especially for this author whom I’ve read several of his books. First the good. Mr. Bacic has a wonderful way of writing where you feel like your standing right there with the characters. Seeing what they are seeing. Absolutely no typos or errors. And the story flows fluidly.

Now the not so good. The main character was completely unlikable. All of the characters were really. I originally thought it was because he had to die so many times that we were almost supposed to enjoy it but no. IMO he had no redeeming qualities. Second I found this book to be predictable all the way through.

I have read 3 of Boris Bacics books so far I live in Oregon so the fact that they are all set in this state is very enjoyable. This is the first book by him that I have found a little disappointing and it is probably because the others I have read have been so amazingly good. If your looking for a really good one from this author I suggest Suicide town.

My recommendation is to read another book by this same author. Unfortunately I do not recommend this book.

Retown had me at a world of insanity because it was that incredible. Why a world of insanity? To be in Jason's shoes. I would have went through great lengths just to get back and not be stuck. I took my time reading and I could not stop yelling; "No! No! Yes! No! Come on! Noooo!" That was me the whole time. Even as I finished the read, and went to bed, the story stand within my mind. I woke today and I'm still have it locked on my brain. I mean, imagine being in that position and unable to set yourself free? I know I would have lost my mind at the very end, even if the determination still lingered for an escape. So much I would love to talk about on this particular book, but then I'll be spoiling it for other readers. Please, take the time to consider checking this book out and give it a read. This man can write and make the story so fantastic. As I've always stated, he is the next Stephen King.

Horror in a small town *

A story about a man called Jason who visits a town for his job and can’t seem to leave no matter what he does, and the book is about him trying desperately to escape and get back to his home to see his wife and daughter who he misses terribly. There is a little bit of rape and quite a bit or murder and violence, so here’s your heads up but and lots supernatural elements. I gave it 3.5 stars but rounded down to 3 because for some reason It took me two- three weeks to finish this book and usually If I’m really into a book I read it quickly. But I happened to have to go to an emergency room at the hospital (I’m fine), and had 7.5 hours to kill so I managed to finally finish most of it there.) No doubt the story is nothing like i ever read before but perhaps it is too drawn out. I won’t give out more details as I don’t want to spoil it for you, but now that I finished the book I’m happy I did :)

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

Is there a way out?

Jason has a trip for work to the small isolated town of Riverton. Once he gets there he discovers there is no way out. Not even death. Who is the strange child wandering the town? Why is everyone afraid of her? Jason wants to get home to his family. Can he escape Riverton? Great character's. How far would you go to escape?

Such a good story and hard to put down. Very easy to read and get hooked into right away. A main character that I sometimes felt sorry for and sometimes thought he was being a selfish jerk. Lots of surprises and most of them were brutal. Another great Boris Bacic read.

what a crazy ride

This was an extremely intense read. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Lots of twists and turns I didn’t see coming. There were occasional misspellings or extra words that were bothersome, but the content was so intriguing I easily overlooked them. Definitely unlike anything I’ve read before, and wouldn’t mind reading it again.

This book had a really interesting idea but was a miss for me. I didn't care for any of the characters and the story was very drawn out, repetitive and predictable. This could have been edited down by half to have more of an impact but probably best as a short story. 2.5* as I enjoyed the start and idea. The more I think about it there are quite a few plot holes so rounding down to 2*

It is very rare that I read the description of a book before deciding to read it. Most of the time I feel I dont chose the book, but the book choses me. This is how I came across so many awesome books in the exact right time of my life. When I started reading to for a competition hold in a facebook group, I didnt exactly expected to be shaken to the core, to cry, gasp, be scared, have wtf moments, be grossed by scenes, all these feelings given by some of the books in the brawl. And with each book read, I had a new favourite and dreaming of banging my head off the wall at the moment of the voting because there are soo many good books out there.
I friggin loved that story from beginning to the end, and not just because it is extremely well written but because of the novelty of the idea (I have never read anything like that before). I got into it with zero idea on what the story was about and I wasn't dissapointed at all. And it made me think of my deceased father so much during reading the story, kind of wishing in a weird way that he would have died in Riverton just to make it possible to see him again at least for a brief moment. Fuck and now im crying, while writing this. This contest is really gonna mess my brains completely 😳.
Anyway, back to the story, it is absolutely amazing, with twists and turns that will make you gasp in shock and definitely let loose a WTF! And having the chance of redoing your life over and over again, I think I'd go for that.
Okay, enough rant.. in conclusion, I absolutely loved this story, I would give it 10 stars if I could. Because it hits too darn close to home!

Cue up "Hotel California" and get ready for a wild ride! I have read many of the author's books and each one makes me say, "This is my favorite one". Then, I read another one and change my mind!

Jason is sent on a business trip to a town that you can't even find on a map (should be a BIG warning there!). After a horrendous drive on roads and bridges that are out of a bad dream, he finally arrives at Riverton. But, his nightmare trip is only a beginning of the true nightmare. "True prison is inside our heads".

As he leaves town, he has a serious car wreck and wakes up to discover that he back in the cheap hotel room in Riverton. Then, things really get crazy when the townspeople tell him that he has died and can never leave.

This book was so full of crazy, psychological twists; part "Groundhog Day", part "Dante's Inferno". Throughout the book, Jason is determined to prove the town wrong and return to his life with his wife and daughter. After a while, I began to feel like Jason and wondered if he was really in a mental institute or dreaming or what was going on!

This book has definitely moved up to the top of my favorites written by Mr. Bacic. And, always remember that you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave!

This was quite a compelling read. However, the missing star is for the many aspects of the story that didn't make sense to me.

I wonder what the author's answers to these questions would be. In the end, I had a feeling that he got a bit lost himself in the explanations, and lost control of his story.
