About Elly written and directed by Asghar Farhadi 鈥 a great work by one of the greatest film makers of our time, and any time come to that, one of my two notes on A Hero is at along with hundreds of other reviews
10 out of 10
I have binge watched with my daughter, Hannah, four of the masterpieces of Asghar Farhadi, A Hero, About Elly, A Separation and The Salesman the latter is Le Client for French speaking lands, hence the different emphasis on the culprit
A group of friends is out to have a good time, and celebrate the return from Germany of Ahmad aka Shahab Hosseini 鈥 a resplendent actor, who has been essential in The Salesman as the lead man Emad, and in A Separation as the unhinged Hojjat As is the norm with this outstanding movie maker, we will have a great, complex fresco of human feelings, challenges, a thriller 鈥 my high school professor of Literature, the fabulous Anton Chevorchian, used to say that any chef d鈥檕euvre has a crime story within, and Asghar Farhadi is clearly respecting the rule
Furthermore, To The Hermitage which is quoted again in the standard ending of this note shows how novels give readers the chance to engage in narratives that have more twists, changes than reality, and this is confirmed by Aristotle The latter insisted on the need for revelation and reversal in a good drama, just like we have in Oedipus Rex where the hero finds that he had killed his father, then married his mother and so he blinds himself and goes into exile with his daughter, Antigone
Sepideh invites Elly aka Taraneh Alidoosti 鈥 this splendid thespian has been at the center of The Salesman, she is the victim of an assault there, and the one who tries to solve the ensuing conflict, keep her husband, Emad, in check, albeit the film will end in tragedy 鈥 to come along to the sea, with the party鈥 We will find only gradually details of the complicated thread of the story, but, after a spoiler alert, let me give some of them in a bundle, now 鈥 Elly has been engaged for a couple of years or so 鈥 I think when the fianc茅 enters the picture he mentions three years of his life, but it could well just what I made him say鈥
Ergo, in the beginning, she had refused to come along, although she has been unhappy with the connection, and she desperately wants to terminate this engagement, anticipating, when we will see the awkward fellow, we get her point 鈥 but eventually, she gives in and agrees to travel with the friends and their families. There are maybe twenty or more, with children and spouses, Ahmad is single, he is divorced now from his German wife 鈥 I presume she was German, for he quotes her saying something with Shrecken and more German words, the shrecken I remember, because we used to see a film called die shrecken der medusa
Anyway, this is what we kept calling it, these were the communist days, and we had this friend, Marius Jaeger, who would bring films from Germany, what a treat, in a desert, the commies would only give you Ceausescu for two hours, at least in the final days, but the movies were dubbed in German, thus the Medusa Touch became Die Shrecken der Medusa or something like that, my German is reduced to Glasperlenspiel Ahmad has asked Sepideh to find a suitable woman for him, presumably to marry again, and the latter thought of Elly, who is the teacher of one of her children, but this would prove to be a disastrous effort to match those two, notwithstanding the innocence, good will of the gesture, just like in the Zen Master Story
In order to digress less, I just think you should comment, and ask me about the Zen story, if you are keen on it, but moving on, the men play volleyball, women clean the place, make food, and even if this part is clearly more of the cr猫me de la cr猫me of present-day Iran, there is still that flavor, the notion that women obey While the friends are playing, there is a cry and children come to say that one of them is in the sea, and it looks for some minutes that he may be drowned, only he is rescued at the last moment, resuscitated, and yet, the misfortune is not finished, for now it is Elly who is missing, and suppositions are made over this absence
Has she gone back to town, has she drowned, trying to save the boy, how about her bag, it is not here, but then they see that Sepideh had hidden the luggage, why would she do that, has anybody offended the young woman, it is a detective investigation now, with new clues entering the plot, and eventually, clashes occur Sepideh is blamed and even kicked by her husband, when he finds of her role in the whole thing, nevertheless, later he is much more careful, worried for her sake and the group, and tries to support her, when the fianc茅 is informed, he arrives and then gets the made up story, he gets to some of the truth, and he bloodies the nose of Ahmad, the would be partner, pushes for more information and finally, the police calls to say that they have found a drowned woman, and they need to have an identification, and it is positive
Now for my standard closing of the note with a question, and invitation 鈥 maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this 鈥 as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se
There is also the small matter of working for AT&T 鈥 this huge company asked me to be its Representative for Romania and Bulgaria, on the Calling Card side, which meant sailing into the Black Sea wo meet the US Navy ships, travelling to Sofia, a lot of activity, using my mother鈥檚 two bedrooms flat as office and warehouse, all for the grand total of $250, raised after a lot of persuasion to the staggering $400鈥ith retirement ahead, there are no benefits, nothing鈥t is a longer story, but if you can help get the mastodont to pay some dues, or have an idea how it can happen, let me know
As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is
Some favorite quotes from To The Hermitage and other works
鈥楩iction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life鈥ts actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound鈥here are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions鈥nlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed鈥hat's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense鈥s random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find鈥ew stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author鈥︹€
鈥歅arturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus鈥
鈥淔rom Monty Python - The Meaning of Life...Well, it's nothing very special...Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.鈥
