Hidden Treasure is a follow up to Oaklander's first book, Windows To Our Children. Most of the books available in working with this population are written from a traditional 'play therapy' point of view. The Gestalt Therapy-based approach provides a more effective method for psychotherapeutic work with children of all ages. The focus is on the relationship between the therapist and client, rather than observation and interpretation. It is a vigorous, dynamic approach.Violet Oaklander uses a wide variety of creative, expressive and projective techniques in her work, and each chapter reflects and exemplifies the use of this work in the service of therapy. The approach is applicable to a wide variety of ages, as well as individual, family and group settings. The book will interest child and adolescent psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, interns, school personnel as well as graduate-level students. Parents may also find it helpful, as well as adults who are interested in the child within.

This book itself is a hidden treasure. It saddens me that not many clinicians have even heard of Violet or know of her two books. I will do my part to make sure I spread the good word of Gestalt Play Therapy and the Oaklander Model, as it is wildly underrated and undervalued in the field. This book has been an invaluable resource, and will continue as such throughout my practice as I grow and continue learning.
I love the ending she writes. “I emphasize that I do not want people to imitate me, but to find their own way to make use of what they learn in the trainings... To find your own way opens you to incredible creative possibilities and frees you to become a vital therapist. So I hope you will take whatever information seems useful to you in this book, and allow it to become assimilated in the wonderful you that you already are.
Thank you Violet. Thank you for sharing your bright light and endearing soul with the world. You have helped heal so many. I wish I could have met you.
Oaklander knows children. She knows them deeply. Her understanding of child and adolescent psychology and treatment approaches far surpass anything else I've read. I couldn't ask for a better mentor healer.
A good balance was maintained between theoretical takes on healthy and disturbed functioning of human psyche, original practical gestalt psychotherapy interventions and real life situational examples - which made it a pretty wholesome book. It seemed useful, so I even made notes while reading it, which, I believe, I will come back to. What annoyed me though, was that the book was not edited well enough - same techniques and the very same examples were mentioned over and over again - it made it feel more like a collection of separate articles rather than a well written and edited book as a whole. Anyway, clarity and practical applicability overweighed the annoying repetition, so strong 4 stars it is.
Violet Oaklander is a gestalt therapist who uses puppets in her work with children. I have been interested in her because of the applications of what she says to my own work with children. You can see some of this work on one of my blogs- jasonpreater.wordpress.com.
