24 June 1962) was a Russian poet, novelist and playwright. He was one of the leading figures of Imaginism. Now he is mostly remembered for his memoirs that depict Russian literary life of the 1920s and his friendship with Sergei Yesenin.

Anatoly Marienhof was born into a Livonian nobleman's family in Nizhny Novgorod. Upon graduating from gymnasium in 1914, he was drafted and served during the First World War on Eastern Front.

Marienhof's literary career started in 1918 when he participated in the Imaginists' manifesto "Deklaraciia", published in Voronezh. The manifesto was signed also by Sergei Yesenin and other Moscow poets. Together they started a new poetic flow called Imaginism. Marienhof participated in all Imaginist actions and publications. He himself published a dozen books of poetry in 1920鈥1928. He became a close friend of Yesenin with whom he shared a flat during some months. Marienhof is the dedicatee of some of Yesenin's major works, including the large poem Sorokoust, the drama Pugachov and the tract on poetics Maria's Keys'.

Marienhof gained further renown with his controversial fiction: "The Novel without Lies" (1926) and "The Cynics" (1928). The former presented his fictionalized (although still largely accurate) recollections of his friendship with Sergei Yesenin; the latter was a story of the life of young intellectuals during the revolution and the War communism. Both were met with sharp criticism in the Soviet press. "The Cynics" was published in Berlin (Petropolis), and not in the Soviet Union until 1988.

After the publication of his last novel, "Shaved Man", in 1930 in Berlin and parts of his historical novel "Ekaterina" (1936), Marienhof was reduced to writing for theatre and later for radio without any hope of being published again. Yesenin's works were edited in the USSR for a long period of time to omit the dedications to Marienhof.

In his later years, after Joseph Stalin's death, Marienhof wrote mostly memoirs; they were published several decades after his death in 1962.

Diogenes the Cynic, holding a burning lantern in the full daylight and looking for an honest man, was presumably the first but after him many came鈥
The times may be cynical as well and the novel Cynics by Anatoly Mariengof is a story of cynics living in the cynical times鈥
Typhus victims lie in the corridors of the hospitals, waiting their turn for a bed. Lice are now called enemies of the revolution鈥
Every day there are long lines of carts carrying coffins out beyond the gates of Moscow. These are all dead people that their relatives are taking out into the countryside to bury. There are too few gravediggers in the city cemeteries so they can鈥檛 afford to wait their turn.

Cynics is a historical chronicle, Cynics is a private diary鈥
鈥淥lga, your lover phoned a quarter of an hour ago鈥︹€
She took off her hat and began coming her hair with a large tortoise-shell comb.
鈥溾€e asked you to come at nine o鈥檆lock this evening.鈥

Cynics is written in short sentences but every sentence is an arrow hitting a bull鈥檚 eye鈥
I stand quite motionless. I am thinking about myself, about Russians and Russia. I hate my blood, my sky, my land, my present, my past.

We don鈥檛 choose our time鈥 Time chooses us鈥

MAGNIFICENT:))))

Vladimir鈥檚 entries convey the impact the historical events had on people, starting with the civil war, followed by famine and disease exacerbated by an inefficient and incompetent central planning. The entries trumpet the establishment of museums and artistic competitions only to be followed by notices of crop failures, typhus outbreaks, and cannibalism in the countryside. Since there are more bodies than diggers, Moscow鈥檚 dead have to be shipped out of the city in order to be buried. The government is more concerned with converting first- and second-class carriages on the trains to third-class carriages (symbolic in its own right) than keeping the city鈥檚 streets lit. Directives against lice (called 鈥渆nemies of the revolution鈥) goes from laughable to pathetic as Vladimir and his wife delouse each other.

Vladimir continually spouts ancient Russian history that everyone ignores, although his references provide a key to what he is experiencing. For example, he looks at history to put his love/hate relationship in context:

It is impossible to understand this country: it forgives Ivan the Terrible but tears Otrepyev to pieces; it wages unsuccessful wars for seven hundred years and conquers more nations than the Roman Empire; it is unable to produce any fuses, and yet it builds the world鈥檚 most beautiful city on a swamp.

This love/hate relationship carries over to his personal life. Vladimir worships his wife Olga, which makes her constant cuckolding of him that much more intense. His aborted suicide attempt provides an example of what was going wrong at the time鈥攖he base of a seven-story apartment building is covered in the garbage tenants throw out the window, which would break the fall of his jump. Vladimir and Olga attempt to carry on in a lifestyle that no longer exists except for the rich and well-connected, first pawning or selling jewels, books, and eventually Olga鈥檚 body. Vladimir鈥檚 comments on the nepman Dokuchaev is something he and Olga figured out early during the turbulence and covers more than just making money:

A man who wishes to make money in Soviet Russia must be the person he needs to be. It depends on the person you are dealing with鈥攁 peasant shirt or a dinner jacket, a fool or an intelligent man, a scoundrel or a relatively decent individual.

The Russian writer Anatoly Mariengof is probably more famous today for his friendship with the poet Sergei Yesenin (Esenin) but the novella Cynics proves to be a powerful work that I found both enjoyable and disturbing. Published in Berlin in 1928 by Petropolis, the book was banned in Russia and not available there until 1988. There was an English edition by Hyperion Press in 1973, now out of print, and a translation by Andrew Bromfield in the inaugural volume of GLAS: New Russian Writing (1991). This is the edition I read and will be quoting. This article at literalab (see my post for the link) goes into more detail on Mariengof and the novella鈥擨鈥檒l try not to cover too much of the same ground as it.

Cynics takes place in Moscow during the military communism period and the New Economic Policy. The narrator Vladimir has gathered notes he wrote during this period, making the novella feel like a diary or a series of blog posts. His entries from 1918 through 1924 cover events in his life and in the changing state and the pastiche gains strength from the comparisons and juxtapositions between the two. In some posts, Vladimir experiences the same misery he reads in the newspaper or from other sources, amplifying the distress. Other posts highlight the disparity between the 鈥榟aves鈥 and 鈥榟ave nots鈥 during the various crises during this tumultuous period.

She chooses lovers than can provide what she (and Vladimir, at times) need and want. But she doesn鈥檛 easily fall into the caricature of a tormenting harpy鈥攅ven though she negotiates her price to become Dokuchaev鈥檚 lover in front of her husband, she donates the check to the famine relief fund.

The tragedy and travesty of the couple and the country make for a powerful novella. Highly recommended. (Be sure to read the literalab article, too.)

A few of the 1919 entries (all ellipses in original):

1

鈥淭ake up your rifle, worker and poor peasant! Join the requisitioning battalions. To the village and the kulaks鈥 barns, for grain! The kulaks of Simbrisk, Ufa and Samara give you no bread鈥攖ake it from the kulaks of Voronezh, Vyatka and Tambov鈥︹€
This is what they call 鈥渢he catechism of the class-conscious proletarian.鈥

Published in Berlin in 1928, but in the USSR only in 1988 due to its 鈥渁nti-soviet鈥 sentiment, the book follows a few young people and their growing pains between the years 1917-1924, alongside the growing pains of the newly emerged USSR.

Filled with wonderfully ironic takes on life and the USSR, some history I am unfamiliar with (such as the rather gruesome presence of cannibalism), some I am familiar with, this was a great example of why I enjoy post-revolution soviet literature so much. The self-irony, the constant tragedy of existence presented in a mundane way, and the utterly time stopping few philosophical sentences enraptured the mind and imagination. The end made me cry.

That being said, this is a novel where the more knowledge you have of historical facts/figures, from the greeks to the present would add to the whole experience. Further, you can tell Mariengof is primarily a poet, for sometimes the structuring of language and passages went over my head (I am not big of poetry). The combination of these two factors left me rather more confused that I had hoped to be.

First things first: Mariengof's writing is delightful, in my opinion. He has his own, original voice, he is witty, playful, cheeky, and he can write both cute-ish funny little sentences and more touching ones. The build-up is nice and smart; the rather mundane yet otherworldly yet also more serious/dramatic problems of the main characters are strikingly juxtaposed by very dryly presented (news) facts that grow from ironically grim to extremely gruesome. - I can handle some graphic details, but in this case, I found it a bit hard to read sometimes, mainly because of personal triggers, I guess. - All in all, this was an interesting read, giving an image of a turbulent (not really in the good way) period in Russian history, but I just didn't feel like reading on. I found the writing/structure a bit confusing sometimes, and I feel like I missed/didn't understand some things. But you know, it's something else.
