The Prodigal's Sister

Rate this book
The Grace of God is so astonishing that we cannot adequately describe it. But Jesus knew how to say it-in a parable. With the drawings of Robert Doares depicting the setting, The Prodigal's Sister poetically and imaginatively retells the parable of the prodigal son with a startling twist. In the poem the younger sister of the prodigal sets out to reclaim her brother's life. The new life the prodigal finds in his father's love is mirrored in the mercy the legalistic elder brother finds when he learns that his slave-like labor is useless in winning his father's love. The Prodigal's Sister , which the author reads on the accompanying CD, rejoices over the incomparable grace of God. For anyone who has ever felt beyond the hope of joy, this poem opens a way home to the Father.

John Pipers poetic re-telling of the prodigal sons paints the parable with imaginative colors and a profound understanding of the heart of God.

As the title suggests, this book is a poetic retelling of the parable of The Prodigal Son in Luke 15.

In the poem the younger sister of the prodigal sets out to fetch her brother from the doldrums and reclaim his life. Once home, she does the same for the legalistic elder brother. The story really rejoices over the incomparable grace of God.

Short and to the point, this poem is imaginative - and the message is still the same as the original story.

Beautiful, imaginative retelling of the parable of Jesus in the form of a new parable in which the author speculates that perhaps there was a sister who did grow up understanding the father's great love, offered freely and without condition to His children. Because of her understanding of the welcome back her brother would receive from their father were he to return, she sets out in this parable to find him and to try to convince him to come home. The rich meaning and beauty of this well-told parable moved me to tears.

As the younger sister of a prodigal brother I found this poem to be both beautiful and heart-wrenching. The story resonated with me, and it is rife with Biblical truths and hope for those who love a prodigal.

A beautiful, meaningful poetic piece by John Piper telling the story of the prodigal sons and their gracious father, looking at the story through the eyes of a possible sisters of the father's sons, who is shown to be God's instrument to bring them back to the their father.

O Christ, pursue us till we see
That all of God’s bequests are free.

This was great! A memorable version of the story. I remembered it from 10 years ago, and can’t wait to share it with my teenage Sunday School class.

I love listening to and reading John Piper. This was such a beautiful story from the perspective of the sister of how she bring both brothers home from the traps of sin.

So beautiful. The main character is the prodigal’s sister as she communicates with her brothers throughout the story. Short yet profound.

You know that a poem is utterly good when you have found yourself lost in it even long after you finished reading it. My lips can't describe enough how beautifully written this book is.

It is composed of three, powerfully riveting poems, brimful of wisdom and with a story so meaningful, that made my heart go awww and my eyes a bit dewy. It retells the parable of "The Prodigal Son" from the Bible with a twist! It opened my eyes to the often overlooked context of the parable, which allowed me to fully understand it and appreciate it even more.

A book you do not want to miss.

I love John Piper's historical fiction poetry (is that a genre?). I haven't heard much about this one, but it is a gem exploring the idea that the key to the Prodigal Son's return was his loving younger sister.

Poetic, artistic, well written, and well read. A bit too far-fetched for me, though, an 18 year old girl being allowed to venture to the city alone in that time period. And a bit too much fictitious license with the story of the prodigal for my personal taste. Still enjoyable though.

This is such a beautiful story. It can be read or listened to in one sitting. Idk how many times this story brought me to tears. Piper just has a way with words and it really makes me want to seek out more of his poetry.

An imaginative and fictional story of the Prodigal's sister and how she seeks out her brother and brings him home to their waiting father. Beautiful read with an excellent poetic slant.
