This was my very first grown-up book! I shudder to think how many years ago that was! I also shudder at the thought of the "things" I learned from it.

I almost didn't continue reading after I started because there were too many characters to keep track--but I decided to give it one more try and I found myself really caring about what happened to Poppy. It was a good book and I enjoyed it immensly once I got past all the characters.

Agradeço à Kobo Leya a cedência do ebook.

Here’s another intriguing tale demonstrating superb character development, with the Lompoc Valley near Santa Barbara as it’s starting point. But as in other Adler novels, we eventually make our way to Europe (Italy and France) as the characters cope with their lives.

Born in 1880, Poppy Mallory loses her mother to consumption shortly after her birth and is cared for by her father’s business partner. During her youth, her unreliable father takes her through the good and bad times of his professional gambling career. Eventually she lands in a public orphanage in Philadelphia and is rescued by her father’s business partner, Nik Konstant. On a tour of Europe, Poppy falls in love with an Italian baron, but her life takes a tragic turn, leaving her with no baron, no family, and no home. Her search for security takes us through the fascinating account of her quest for survival and her need for affluence. Here’s a spoiler: eventually, she’s quite successful in accumulating wealth (albeit unconventional means). But who will receive the hundreds of millions when she’s gone? There seem to be a greedy list of contestants vying for it.

This riveting account of Poppy’s (and her descendant’s) experiences bridges the last 100 years and rates this book a place in my top ten favorite novels.

O.M.G!!! This sucked me in and I literally could not put it down. literally. mystery, suspense, drama, mafia, love, sex.... it had EVERYTHING. It was like a saga. There are a lot of characters to keep track of but after a little bit you know everyone. Elizabeth Adler is hands down one of the best authors, and this novel is now in my top 5, maybe even top 3.

"The five heirs" has this particularity of being divided into analepses. I quite like stories with this division because they explain the past of the characters and unravel mysteries in a more "attractive" way. However, in this book the analepses were what led to the story going astray. The author got so lost in Poppy's story and her analepses that the mystery we were promised, the unravelling of the heir and the "fight" between them was left aside. The plot that was expected was entitled to some 7 or few more chapters. So due to little development of the plot itself, the characters were all very superficial, with the exception of Poppy as she was the one repetitively in the action.
The characters themselves, as already mentioned were given little depth and I seriously thought Mike would have another impact on the story. Although this superficiality is good as it gives the character the character of mystery, in the end one could have a more complete profile of them. And the choice of the male heir I think was very badly done, as it was the character we had no connection to, we barely knew him. He could have been the one chosen, but one would have had to have some more connection to the character. There was also no focus on the 5 heirs themselves, they were introduced at the beginning, they were wrapped up in a mystery and the then very at the end things were figured out.
The author in the middle of the book decided to include some more mysteries to give more suspense to the story and make it addictive. However this mystery was poorly developed, it was simply put in and then forgotten and then at the end of the book the author remembered it and came up with a quick solution. So all the mysteries and the revelation of the heir were very rushed and without any emotion, making them insipid.
The fundamental of the story and what moved the plot forward was supposed to be the theories of each person justifying that they were the heirs. At first where they were explained, I found them confusing and they seemed jumbled together, but then as the reading progressed the dots connected and it was seen that practically all of them were related. Which made the reading captivating as the points were connected and you understood them better and were able to draw your own conclusions and make your own theories.
What was disappointing about this book was what you were expecting. Deverás Poppy's story is wonderfully developed and addictive, but it loses its lustre as that was not the focus that was wanted. What was intended was a dispute between the 5 heirs to claim the inheritance. However I thought the two plot twists regarding Rogan and Carraldo were amazing.

A very complex romantic mystery. The central character is beset with numerous personal challenges and circumstances and friends and foes alike all seem to conspire against her. Poppy creates some of her own problems and in spite of many successes, she is never completely satisfied or happy.

The author created a great story that ended leaving the reader sad. The author also depicted the main women as strong in some respects but all were weak and intimidated and abused by the men in their lives. Of course the time period is the late 1800's into the mid-1900's when women were dominated by men.

Not a happy or fulfilling book for a woman reader but the complexity kept me reading it to the bitter end.

I first read this book many years ago. I remember liking the book a lot. And then not too long ago, something reminded me of this book and I hate to do a search for what I could remember about it to find the author and title. Well, I found the book, purchased it and re-read it. Being that I am an adult now and was better able to understand exactly what was going on, I think I enjoyed it even more the second time around.

This was my first book by Elizabeth Adler and I must say that if this isn't her best book, I don't know if can handle the real one. Such an intricate story that kept me hooked until the end. Poppy is an amazing character that deserved so much more than what she ended up with, but that was part of the magic of the book. I ended up crying like a baby and in love with this story. Thank you, miss Adler.

One of the best books I have read in a very long time.

I hurried through it because I was impatient to see what happens next but at the same time,I didn't want it to end. Such a grand story about a grand woman and her friends and family. I very seldom in my many years of reading do I want to read a book again the minute I finish it. All I can say is WOW!!! Loved it. I have to find another by Elizabeth Adler.

This is one of the books I read as a 12 year old or something. It was probably wildly inappropriate, but you read what you can find. If you're looking for Danielle Steel and Sidney Sheldon style stories of love, loss, sex, and danger, this is a good example. The writing is fairly bad at points, but the story is interesting and keeps you going.

Recomendo vivamente e leitura.
