"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of control. There's an air of lassitude there, a general acceptance of eccentic or flamboyant behavior--the heat simply makes people do crazy things.

I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans. Then I went back to New York (Manhattan) and got a job in publishing and started writing. My first book, a young, middle-grade chapter book, was published in 1990.

Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

(While I was in NY, I helped edit "The Secret Circle" by L.J. Smith. I thought it was great.)

We stayed in New Orleans five years. By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. I was glad my children were born in New Orleans--I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on. There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important.

Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC. This is the most suburban place I've ever lived, and it's very different from living right in the middle of a city. For one thing, there aren't enough coffee shops. However, it's incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me. There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.

Am I a witch? Well, no. Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me. I'm much more idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new-agey and pantheistic. It's not that I don't work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it. However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity. I love those aspects, among others.

I have several favorite writers. Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic. She's an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world. I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties. She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman's day; how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance. I greatly admire P.D. James. She's one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary. She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe. I love Philip Larkin's poetry. I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers. Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that's kind of what we're all doing, right? I also just like reading about sex. Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves.

And then of course there's my dark side, but more on that later.

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

This book has me questioning everything I thought I've known from the first two books. This is great in a way as it makes for a nice story, but I hate questioning everything. lol

Why does everyone in this book feel bad for Bree? She is the worst best friend I've found in a book in a while and I can't help but feel that the author is eventually going to let Bree off the hook and everybody will be together again and blah blah blah. It's irritating to me.

There isn't much more to add without spoiling anything. So, for now, I'm excited to have made progress and this series and can't wait till I get around to the next book.

How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. I had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't like it. I didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other than for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this book's content.
5 I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

Morgan discovers that Cal's mom Selen hid her birthmother's Book of Shadows, she claims it and learns many things about her mother, family, and origins: She is a Woodbanes, but her clan revoked evil Wicca, unlike Cal, who happened to have a step-brother who evokes the strongest feelings in her, who also is a Seeker hunting wicked witches like his name "Hunter", Hunter has a friend, her name is Sky and she makes a new coven with Bree and Raven joining her, looking to dissolve Cal's coven.

Morgan misses Bree but doubts her especially when someone runs her over the road. Then she scries in fire like her mom used to and finds her tools. Meanwhile, her sister is dating a guy who attacks her and she sends a witch's bolt to hurt him, she also helps her friend Jenna who has asthma, and discovers that Raven and Matt (Jenna's boyfriend) have an affair, also that Robbie has been in love with Bree for years. By the end, I think Morgan must suspect that Cal is using a charm and love potion on her, controlling her and her powers.

Morgan annoyed me one or two times in this, but she wasn't a bad character.

This was another okay read in the series, but again, the pacing was quite slow. It dragged a bit for me.

It's not fair that Morgan was blessed with magic. She's so daft.
This is my fastest skim ever. She's worst than Bella Swan.

“Sometimes I feel like I don’t know anything, I heard myself blurt out.

Well, at least she knows this. I'm not sure if I still want to read about narrow-minded & foolish Morgan.

I just realized I remember very little about Cal and Hunter and their relationship with Morgan??? Now I'm wondering if there's a reason I find Cal so shady lol

This was still a pretty fun read all around, tho Morgan's a bit of a dummy about certain things.

This book is defiantly a solid 4.5
It starts out slow in the beginning but it still keeps you hooked. I feel so sorry for the fate that became Morgan at the end of the last chapter. *if you read the book, cue the heart wrenching depth of what happened*.
I can not wait to finish this series.

Reread 10 years later review- 2.6 stars. Good grief, I don’t remember Morgan being this dense and blindly loyal and in-love with Cal. Also, I have not liked Cal very much from the beginning and now I don’t trust him at all (his mother especially)

Pet peeve: when people call Wicca an "ancient" religion when it was actually first conceptualized in the 20th century.

Another great addition to the series! We continue to watch Morgan grow and learn more about her mother. We also get to see more of the mysterious Sky and Hunter. The only thing I didn't like was how Morgan is being somewhat blind to how Cal has been behaving lately. Is there something big that he's hiding??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

3.5. Major developments in the Morgan/Cal front. Hunter starts playing a bigger part. I’ve always loved that the BOS entries are giving us a bit of insight into other people’s minds as well.

This installment is a good read too. Morgan's journey continues with equal answers and more questions. Her heritage offers intriguing possibilities going forward. Still engaging and enjoyable.

I loved this book! Loved Morgan finding her mother’s stuff, how she went on the trip with Robbie and especially about her seeing Cal in another light.
I don’t like Cal at all, and I hope Hunter is the one who ends up being right though that must traumatise Morgan FOREVER.

I still can’t get over Selene having Maeve’s BOS in her library, and how certain pages from Cal’s BOS in book 1 seemed like his mom was pressuring him into getting Morgan to fall in love with him.

AND DUDE WILL HUNTER SURVIVE OMG

My thoughts about what happens next:
- Hunter will end up being right
- Selene was the one who went after all the other covens and killed Lynden out of spite for her ex baby daddy (aka Cal’s dad for leaving her)
- Hunter and Morgan will end up together
- Morgan and Bree will become BFF’s again after Cal is gone

Plot

Finally, three books in, we get something that is starting to look like the beginning of a plot in Blood Witch. It doesn’t really happen until the last half of the book, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose. Things don’t look like what they seem with certain witches, but there’s not a lot going on. I assume the next book will develop the plot further, but until then, we’re left with just a little scrap in this book. I will admit, though, that it’s enough to make me curious.

Writing

The writing is still dull. After reading the last part of the book, I have to say that I’m super disappointed with how things were paced up until this point. Tiernan showed that she can write something interesting; she’s just chosen not to, apparently. Like I’ve said in my previous two reviews on the other books in this series, the writing isn’t terrible, but I would not hail it as good either. I feel like it’s getting better though (either that or I’m getting used to it).

Characters

Morgan is more of a dunderhead in Blood Witch than an actual brat. She overlooks the most simple of things and makes it very frustrating for the reader, especially seeing as how we have about the same amount of information as she does. She’s also beginning to border into Mary Sue territory. Morgan found out she’s a witch no more than three months ago yet she’s doing all of these things that takes other witches years to learn. Yes, she’s from an ancient and powerful clan, but potential does not translate into talent.

There’s something off about Cal that I can’t quite put my finger on so for now I’m cautious about him. I don’t actively hate him but I’ve got my suspicions about him that isn’t making my opinion tilt in his favor. No to mention that he’s the epitome of a Gary Stu as well, so there’s that.

The rest of the characters blend into the background and are merely props for now.

Things I Liked

I like the little hint of a plot twist that is thrown in there, just in the end to help plant seeds of doubt in the readers mind. Unfortunately this happened in the last few pages and thus was the only thing I really enjoyed.

Things I Didn't Like

Since it wouldn’t be practical to say I didn’t like the entire book, I’ll say this: Cal and Morgan’s relationship is just a big irritating thing to me. They don’t even talk about anything outside of Wicca so how can I even begin to like their relationship? Even if they go together quickly, I’ve read a lot of books and stories where a quick romance is written very well. Cal and Morgan’s romance is not.

Diversity

It looks like there’s some hinting towards a same gender relationship between two semi-important characters, but it’s probably going to be set in future books. That’s it, though.

Overall

I gave Blood Witch two stars for what I believe and hope is going to happen in the next books. Also, because of the last part of the book. The story actually picked up a bit, and for that I was happy after having to drudge through two-and-a-half boring books before the real action started. I don’t have high hopes per se, but I’m not dreading the rest of the series—yet.

Woowy Zowwy!!

If anything - the endings of these books are fantastic!

Talk about evil cliffies! I'm already standing on the edge screaming NOES!!! because I don't have the next book.

I so wonder how people who read this series as it was released dealt with it. I wouldn't have had the patience.

"Blood Witch" starts right where "The Coven" left off. Morgan is in Selene's private hidden library where she find's her birth mom's Book of Shadows. Oh snap! And since we already know all about Mauve's Book of Shadows from reading snippets of it in "Coven" you can bet your bottom dollar that Morgan is about to discover some real witchy things about herself.

Selene is kinda like "What you doing in here?" blah blah blah but then for some reason she's all like "Yeah sure, Morgan! You can have the BOS! I was going to give it to you anyways! True Dat!"

I felt that was kinda weird but I really think it's all a set-up because with what happened at the end... there totally HAS to be a reason to it.

Bree and Morgan still don't dig each other and Bree is still getting close to Raven. Morgan learns (when hiding in a bathroom stall) that the other coven is doing something with Morgan's hair that Bree got out of an old hairbrush from the good ol' days when they were still besties. I have no clue what's going on with it but I bet the next book will tell and I bet it will be awesome!

Hunter and Sky are still in this book and we learn a big whopper about Hunter. It's so big you'll gasp!

We also learn what clan Morgan belongs to. And she gets even more info about her roots at Practical Magic (I wish I could go there!!).

And slowly but surely, Morgan is uncovering secrets that her Mom has left behind. It makes me even more anxious to read the next book.

I really love all the info about Wicca and how it seems to be very true to the craft. Sure there is a bit of supernatural fluff but I don't see anything wrong with that.

OH! And in this book Morgan gets the cutest little kitty! Hooray for the fluffiness!

All in all this is turning out to be a great series. If you like witches then you'll love these books!

I do however wonder who SGATH is. I already know who Giomanach is. But I'm very curious about Sgath. I'm hoping it tells in the next book.

Overall: The Sweep series by Cate is a light read, yet still really interesting. I felt like this was the sorbet course, a hiatus, amidst my reading of George RR Martin's much weightier tomes. Every novel covers Magick, young love and fitting in (or not!).

However, a novel in the Sweep series is so short that it is almost a chapter in the lives of the characters.
Plus: The Wiccan research is pretty intense, and the books give an authentic feel to being in a coven and the troubles/challenges a young witch (Morgan) might encounter. The first few books all deal with Morgan, and her first two loves. She slowly begins to learn about her abilities, and her heritage, and has to make touch choices in order to grow in power and understanding.
Minus: Please read as many books together as possible, the story feels very abrupt if you don't.

I would recommend it to: All YA readers, ages 10 and up. Adults will also enjoy this series - there is enough depth in the story to entertain a more discerning reader. Also: P.C. Cast readers, Lili St. Crow and Rachel Vincent fans.

The third book in this amazing series is more of a joy to read than the first two.
This is the book in which we see Morgan start to come into her own. She is starting to realize who she is as a person and a witch. She is making choices that are taking her away from what others think is the right course of action for her, and toward what she believes to be right.
The author chooses to include entries from both Cal(Sgath) and Hunter (Giomanach) Book of Shadows. Once again, I find myself a little confused by this until near the end of the book. Though I like the backstory that the BOS (Book of Shadows) entries provide, I sometimes find myself:
1. Wanting to skip them to get back to the story of Morgan.
2. Wondering who or what the entries are about until they are
explained at a later point.
This is the book of agendas...I really enjoy the fact that I am given a backstage pass in this story and allowed to see who is really pulling the strings.
This book is about so much more than Wicca. It is about family, self-knowlegde, trust and love.

I can see where this is going and I'm not impressed. I also am just annoyed at the lack of creativity character wise. The whole best friends split up by a guy and then become enemies? I don't want to read stories about characters like that. Where are the positive messages? Who thought it would be a good idea to write about girls stabbing each other in the back, parents being unsupportive, and a man being the center of a woman's life? I dislike authors who do not give young adults honest, valuable lessons. Obviously, there is evil in the world, but young girls need to be reading literature that gives them self-esteem.

After laughing hysterically at the first 2 books in this series, why did I continue to torture myself with the third? The answer is simply because all 3 of these books were together in 1 volume.

That being said, Blood Witch was not nearly as laugh out loud ridiculous as the previous 2 installments of this series. Don't get me wrong, it was still terrible, it just wasn't as bad. It seemed like the author was finally satisfied that she'd educated the readers enough about Wicca and she could finally move along with telling a story.

There is no plot here. The coming inevitable twist is pretty obvious, and I feel it's being dragged out for far too long. Which may be a talent in itself given how short these books are.

I know I'll enjoy the series overall, but this third installment... ugh. Nothing happens until the end, and even then I'm pretty sure nothing actually happens.

I'll be reading the next book very soon. Not so much because I can't stand not knowing what's going to happen to Morgan, but because I actually care much more about finding out what happened to characters who are long dead. Is that sad?

Once again, nothing really happened in this book. I feel like the conversations Morgan has with everyone are very repetitive. I still have more books to read from this series, but I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it or not. I've given this book three stars because it wasn't that bad, but if the plot doesn't pick up soon I don't know if I can bring myself to make it all the way to book 15.

ÇA BRASSE ENFIN POUR LE CUL DE CAL! God, about time.
