Klingsors letzter Sommer bedeutete Hermann Hesse so viel, dass er die Erz盲hlung aus dem Jahr 1919 nach 32 Jahren wieder auflegen lie脽. Sie markiert auch, im Zusammenhang mit gelesen, eine Schubumkehr der Triebkr盲fte. Im Gegensatz zum letzteren steht nicht das Leben, sondern der Tod im Zentrum des Geschehens, 盲hnlich wie bei , als ein Gegner, eine Herausforderung, die das Sch枚pferische annimmt und in Kunst umm眉nzt. Aus Josef Knecht wird Klingsor und er feiert das Leben:
禄Inwendig芦, sang er, 禄bin ich wie eine Kugel von Gold, wie die Kuppel eines Domes, man kniet darin, man betet, Gold strahlt von der Wand, auf altem Bilde blutet der Heiland, blutet das Herz der Maria. Wir bluten auch, wir Anderen, wir Irrgegangenen, wir Sterne und Kometen, sieben und vierzehn Schwerter gehn durch unsre selige Brust. Ich liebe dich, blonde und schwarze Frau, ich liebe alle, auch die Philister; ihr seid arme Teufel wie ich, ihr seid arme Kinder und fehlgeratene Halbg枚tter wie der betrunkne Klingsor. Untypisch f眉r Hesse erz盲hlt Klingsors letzter Sommer lose aneinandergereiht ein paar Episoden, die sich eher zu einem lyrischen Prosatext zusammenschlie脽en, ein Gedicht f眉r und mit dem Leben, den Tod im R眉cken. Klingsor s盲uft und feiert, er liebt, er dichtet, er malt und schreitet explosiv, zufrieden-unzufrieden im Rausch durchs Leben. Sein 眉berborderndes Naturell kennt keine festen Grenzen. All Grenzen dienen der Transzendenz, dienen als Pol der Drehung-Herauswindung und Herausforderung, noch aus den letzten Momenten und Augenblicken des Lebens die sattsam intensivste Gl眉ckseligkeit zu ziehen:
禄Ich werde doch wieder malen芦, sagte Klingsor, 禄schon morgen. Aber nicht mehr diese H盲user und Leute und B盲ume. Ich male Krokodile und Seesterne, Drachen und Purpurschlangen, und alles im Werden, alles in der Wandlung, voll Sehnsucht, Mensch zu werden, voll Sehnsucht, Stern zu werden, voll Geburt, voll Verwesung, voll Gott und Tod.芦
Mitten durch seine leisen Worte und durch die aufgew眉hlte trunkne Stunde klang tief und klar Ersilias Stimme, still sang sie das Lied vom bel mazzo di fiori vor sich hin, Friede str枚mte von ihrem Liede aus, Klingsor h枚rte es wie von einer fernen schwimmenden Insel 眉ber Meere von Zeit und Einsamkeit her眉ber.
Klingsors letzter Sommer steht einem Text wie Fran莽ois Villons sehr nahe. Hesse schreibt hier wie ein trunks眉chtiger Minnes盲nger, mit einem Fu脽 im Himmel, mit dem anderen in der H枚lle. Das Gem盲lde, das er malt, bleibt unvollendet. Es bildet nichts ab. Es bleibt monstr枚s, ungeschieden, gr枚脽enwahnsinnig. Er gibt auf, atmet durch, schreitet weiter. Das Malen und Dichten stehen hier als Lebensbejahung, als Triebfeder der Existenz, die sich nicht bescheiden noch m枚chte. Schade nur, dass es eher eine Art 脡criture automatique, ein w眉stes Drauflosschreiben, ein wirres Spiel mit Farben, Geschehnissen, Zitaten darstellt, und sehr wenig Komposition, Rahmenwirkung und narrative Spannung enth盲lt. Ein Text also, der n盲her an Andr茅 Bretons heranreicht als bspw. an das janusk枚pfige, zwischen B眉rgerlichkeit und Boh猫me pendelndes Thomas Mannsches .

Em todo o caso, n茫o via para mim outro caminho que n茫o o regresso 脿 poesia, independentemente de o mundo ainda necessitar de poesia ou n茫o. Se ainda me comovo com as convuls玫es e perdas dos anos de guerra que destru铆ram a minha vida quase por completo, e se pude dar um sentido 脿 minha exist锚ncia, isso s贸 foi poss铆vel atrav茅s de uma invers茫o e uma introvers茫o radicais, pela despedida de tudo o que conhecia at茅 ent茫o, atrav茅s de uma tentativa de me colocar entre os anjos.

A pequena paleta cheia de cores puras e da mais viva intensidade luminosa era o seu conforto, a sua torre, o seu arsenal, o seu livro de ora莽玫es, o seu canh茫o, do qual disparava contra a morte malvada. O p煤rpura era a nega莽茫o da morte, o vermelh茫o era o escarnecer da decad锚ncia.

Description: Written over the course of a few weeks in July and August 1919, it was published in December 1919 in the Deutsche Rundschau. It was later published (by Samuel Fischer) in a volume which included Kinderseele and Klein und Wagner. The story is an account of the final months of the life of Klingsor, a forty-two-year-old expressionist painter. A lover of poetry, a heavy drinker and a womanizer, he spends his final summer in southern Italy, torn between sensuality and spirituality and troubled by feelings of impending death.

I love reading Hermann Hesse. I think he creates an atmosphere you can really feel, and does it in a way that鈥檚 natural and easy to read. In the first story, 鈥淎 Child鈥檚 Heart,鈥� Hesse describes the guilt and anxiety of a kid who鈥檚 just stolen something. Two days after reading this story, I had a dentist appointment. No matter how mature I pretend to be about the dentist, I still feel like a sweaty mess in the waiting room. And, as I suffered there, I realized that this was only a slightly more intense version of what I had experienced while reading 鈥淎 Child鈥檚 Heart.鈥� Hesse had provoked physical fear within me, the kind that makes me not want to eat or sit or stand or breathe.
However, that doesn't mean I don't notice pretty obvious faults in his writing. Like the fact that in the world of Hesse, nouns do not exist without adjectives attached to them. You never just hear about 鈥渢he staircase鈥�, you hear about the dim staircase. You then hear about it ten more times, and at each point it is called the dim staircase. Or, the dim and dusky staircase. Or--most likely-- the dim, dusky, and cool staircase. And these adjectives often help create the atmosphere I love so much, but by the end of the paragraph, the fact that the staircase is dim, dusky, and cool will have been pounded into your head so many times that you never want to hear about the thing again.
At the same time, I couldn't help thinking that perhaps this problem is partly due to translation. You know, maybe it has something to do with the fact that, compared to English, German words are oddly specific? (Like my personal favorite, the word for when you overeat and then feel guilty about it, "kummerspeck," translated literally as "grief bacon."). But, considering there are many other German-to-English translations that are trim as Hemingway, plus the sheer variety and detail of the prose, I feel comfortable pointing to Hesse himself. Who, in his earnestness to bring a situation to life, sometimes kills it.
I think he does the same with the spiritual aspect of his writing. I mean, I like it when he gets all deep and stuff, and I agree with most of it鈥攂ut it tends to go on for pages and pages鈥� At a certain point, it becomes preachy and insecure. It's as if he's afraid the reader won鈥檛 believe him. Just like the overuse of descriptive adjectives, this repetition starts to backfire quickly.
With that being said, the empathy and absorption I feel while reading Hesse, along with a wonder at the uninhibited beauty of his writing, is consistent enough that I can forget about all these gripes. All in all, this collection of stories only confirmed what I already knew: fear and anxiety included, I love reading Hermann Hesse.

Hesse gives us a portret of a tormented painter in an often hallucinatory style. At the end he becomes obsessed by painting his self-portrait and still painting overworks and destroys it by wanting to catch each layer of himself. Difficult book but somehow it gets a grip on you.

Vaya t贸rrida, delirante y po茅tica reflexi贸n sobre el arte, la vida y la muerte, por parte de Hermann Hesse, uno de mis autores favoritos. Este fogoso relato, casi un poema en prosa, pudiera ser la respuesta alemana a 鈥淟a muerte de Ivan Ilich鈥� de Lev Tolstoi, pues tambi茅n trata sobre el enfrentamiento del hombre con la muerte. Ilich como hombre del siglo XIX perece a causa de una enfermedad incurable mientras que Klingsor agoniza por un intenso 茅xtasis art铆stico, que utiliza como ant铆doto al vac铆o existencial del hombre del siglo XX. Si en la obra de Tolstoi la luz al final del t煤nel equivale a una revelaci贸n, en la de Hesse ser谩 una met谩fora.
Hablando del argumento (la delirante b煤squeda est茅tica) este relato me recuerda a otros cuentos c茅lebres, como 鈥淓l monje negro鈥� de Ant贸n Ch茅jov o 鈥淓l perseguidor鈥� de Julio Cort谩zar que tocan el tema de la delirante b煤squeda art铆stica. Las tres obras cuentan con estilos completamente diferentes, pero son de obligada lectura para qui茅n est茅 interesado en el tema.
El autor toma el nombre de Klingsor del personaje de la 贸pera Parsifal de Richard Wagner; en esa obra musical Klingsor es un mago perverso y libidinoso que habiendo sido desterrado, construye su propio reino de placeres. En contraste, el Klingsor al que aqu铆 nos referimos, es un simple artista; un ser mucho menos poderoso y malvado, pero igualmente capaz de crear su universo particular de arrebato y embelesamiento. El pintor naturalista vive su vida a tope, exaltado a causa de la poes铆a y la bebida. Su admiraci贸n exacerbada por el poeta chino del siglo VIII Li Tai Pe (conocido en occidente gracias a Ezra Pound) le hacen acompa帽ar su 茅xtasis con un reiterado delirio po茅tico, en el cual el pintor necesita viajar constantemente haciendo ef铆meros amor铆os. En su parte m谩s oscura el protagonista cree conversar con personajes de la historia y se posesiona de figuras del pasado oriental (Li Tai Pei, Thu Fu) haciendo m谩s alucinante su psicolog铆a. Por medio de la pintura Kilngsor es capaz de elevarse y rozar la inmortalidad, pero su peque帽ez humana le devuelve al piso y le hace coquetear a diario con la muerte.
Hermann Hesse sabe perfectamente de lo que est谩 hablando, pues adem谩s de novelista fue poeta y pintor. Por tanto, puede abordar la problem谩tica bas谩ndose en su propia experiencia. Esto le permite desdoblar su personalidad en alter-egos (el pintor, el poeta y el cruel). Como dato curioso el autor mismo aparece como personaje secundario, pues en uno de sus viajes Klingsor se acompa帽a de un escritor llamado Hermann, detalle que nos recuerda que en toda obra literaria las figuras de 鈥渁utor鈥� y 鈥渘arrador鈥� deben manejarse como entidades diferentes.
Con estos ex贸ticos recursos, el autor construye un cuento modernista que llega a saborearse plenamente haciendo segundas lecturas. Pese a que el relato consta de s贸lo cien p谩ginas uno siente como si fueran el doble ya que exige repasar muchos p谩rrafos, ya sea para entender el sentido o para captar su plenitud po茅tica. Por el contrario, el inesperado y ambiguo final corona de manera triunfante la obra, recompensando al p煤blico que logra llegar a buen t茅rmino con su lectura.
Definitivamente no es el cuento indicado para iniciarse con el escritor alem谩n. Se trata de una obra surrealista que disfrutar谩n mejor los amantes de la literatura modernista y de la prosa po茅tica. La lectura exige sumergirse con una mente relajada y deseosa de dejarse llevar, como si de degustar un buen vino se tratase.

En contraste, el Klingsor al que aqu铆 nos referimos, es un simple artista; un ser mucho menos poderoso y malvado, pero igualmente capaz de crear su universo particular de arrebato y embelesamiento. El pintor naturalista vive su vida a tope, exaltado a causa de la poes铆a y la bebida. Su admiraci贸n exacerbada por el poeta chino del siglo VIII Li Tai Pe (conocido en occidente gracias a Ezra Pound) le hacen acompa帽ar su 茅xtasis con un reiterado delirio po茅tico, en el cual el pintor necesita viajar constantemente haciendo ef铆meros amor铆os. En su parte m谩s oscura el protagonista cree conversar con personajes de la historia y se posesiona de figuras del pasado oriental (Li Tai Pei, Thu Fu) haciendo m谩s alucinante su psicolog铆a. Por medio de la pintura Kilngsor es capaz de elevarse y rozar la inmortalidad, pero su peque帽ez humana le devuelve al piso y le hace coquetear a diario con la muerte.
Hermann Hesse sabe perfectamente de lo que est谩 hablando, pues adem谩s de novelista fue poeta y pintor. Por tanto, puede abordar la problem谩tica bas谩ndose en su propia experiencia. Esto le permite desdoblar su personalidad en alter-egos (el pintor, el poeta y el cruel). Como dato curioso el autor mismo aparece como personaje secundario, pues en uno de sus viajes Klingsor se acompa帽a de un escritor llamado Hermann, detalle que nos recuerda que en toda obra literaria las figuras de 鈥渁utor鈥� y 鈥渘arrador鈥� deben manejarse como entidades diferentes.
Con estos ex贸ticos recursos, el autor construye un cuento modernista que llega a saborearse plenamente haciendo segundas lecturas. Pese a que el relato consta de s贸lo cien p谩ginas uno siente como si fueran el doble ya que exige repasar muchos p谩rrafos, ya sea para entender el sentido o para captar su plenitud po茅tica. Por el contrario, el inesperado y ambiguo final corona de manera triunfante la obra, recompensando al p煤blico que logra llegar a buen t茅rmino con su lectura.
Definitivamente no es el cuento indicado para iniciarse con el escritor alem谩n. Se trata de una obra surrealista que disfrutar谩n mejor los amantes de la literatura modernista y de la prosa po茅tica. La lectura exige sumergirse con una mente relajada y deseosa de dejarse llevar, como si de degustar un buen vino se tratase.

Amazing book! A painter (Klingzor) is having a final burst for cretivity during his last summer 鈥� that could be the short sum of the book. What actually happens - Klingzor introspectively looks at his life. The book is short, but a pure bliss to read, it is colourful, full of expressionisim. Totally my type of a book. This book reminded me why I live Lithuanian poet H.Radauskas so much. The same vibe! Absolutely loved it!

The story Klingsor's Last Summer flows like water into your mind, put aside the absence of plot as an old artist lives through his last days. I have always been a Hesse fan, whether its Damien or Narziss und Goldmund, yet here in this novella is one of his greatest works. I first read it obliquely as a teenager, sitting under a tree with an apple, when I started the story it was a sunlit afternoon, when I finished it the light was darkening and the apple was uneaten. Somehow in the way it is written you become blissfully unaware of the reading process as each word almost hypnotically reaches deep into your Palio mammalian brain without any struggles or worries. Its as if Hermann found a USB to human consciousness. (Or it is probably just me?) The words themselves flow beautifully, which for a translation is a feat of merit before you reach the richness of this succulent story. If I think of this book and how to describe the experience of reading it, well it is a lot like swimming in water that is the same temperature as your body is, you will gently slide through this story.
This short novella is bliss, beauty, and an utterly unfathomably a work of genius. It is (and I acknowledge the word doesn't come close to describing the story.) Cathartic, and almost meditative.
I would say that most of Hesse's works are brilliant, but for some reason this is a personal favourite, it's a story and style that fits like an old pair of shoes.

Die Beschreibung von Frauen und M盲dchen(!) teilweise etwas problematisch, aber so so sch枚n geschrieben, dass ich es in Anbetracht wann es geschrieben wurde verzeihen kann. Malerisch, vertr盲umt aber auch best眉rzend beschreibt Hesse den letzten Sommer des Malers, seine Gedanken zum Leben, der Verg盲nglichkeit und dem Sterben- und wie er es beschreibt zieht einen richtig ins Buch rein, so als sei man selber Teil davon. Wenn man kein Problem hat auch problematische Stellen im Buch zwar kritisch zu betrachten, aber als Teil des Charakters des Protagonisten zu sehen, kann ich dieses Buch sehr weiterempfehlen!

When I鈥檓 reading Hesse, I understand that I could just read Hesse for the rest of my life.

Well, ho-hum. I didn鈥檛 think I鈥檇 say this about a book (novella; in German 鈥淓rz盲hlung鈥�) by Hermann Hesse whose Steppenwolf I loved as a teenager, and some of whose others I鈥檝e loved over the years. Certainly, the author knows how to create images with the German language. He likes long, dreamy sentences; this book has lists of intense colours - Zinmnobergr眉n, Kobaltviolett, Englischrot - the words alone are delicious and suited to a story about a painter (from the description, an Expressionist, like Marianne Werefkin). The preferred mode is to invert the sentence order, never putting the subject first, but starting with an adjectival attribute or a preposition 鈥� which you can do in German. In addition, the sentences often leave out the article of a subject; again, a thing you can do. The effect is one of universalising things and of turning things into proper nouns.
A flavour:
鈥淒urch steilen finstern Wald bergan, an Zweig und Wurzel geklammert, quoll man hinweg, den Heimweg suchend. Lichter Waldrand ward erreicht, Feld geentert, schmaler Weg im Maisfeld atmete Nacht und Heimkehr.鈥� (p. 59)
My clumsy translation: 鈥楾hrough steep dark woods up the mountain, clinging to branch and root, one did surge onward, seeking the way home. Light forest edge was reached, field entered, narrow path in the corn field breathed night and homecoming.鈥�
I am also partial to Hesse鈥檚 New Age spirituality.
So why only two stars?
I now notice much more the a) masculinising dismissal of women and b) the Eurocentric exoticisation or dismissal of the non-Western.
a) The protagonist, the painter Klingsor, is an unreflective entitled man for whom all women are there to be sexually available. Women are described as beautiful and pretty, pliant and flirty, naive and horny, while the men get to be tormented artists, clever poets, wise gurus and friends. A flavour:
鈥淓r k眉脽te sie, die sich lachend zur眉ckbog, auf den offenen, starken Mund, zwischen Str盲uben und Widerreden gab sie nach, k眉脽te wieder, sch眉ttelte den Kopf, lachte, suchte sich freizumachen.鈥� (p.88)
My clumsy translation: 鈥楬e kissed her, she who bent back laughing, onto her open strong mouth, between reluctance and resistant talk she submitted, kissed back, shook her head, laughed, sought to free herself.鈥�
This is basically non-consensual or dubiously consensual, and it jarred.
b) There is overt denigration of the war-tired West (and historically, this is interesting; the novella was first published in 1919). But the celebration of the East retains the Orient as a place of mystery and Otherness, and ultimately, the tormented Western man is the more interesting.
Format: Suhrkamp always does nice paperbacks that open flat nicely, with a good-weight paper and in this case, particularly large clear typescript. I was frustrated at the lack of acknowledgement of who designed the cover.

In dieser autobiografisch begr眉ndeten Novelle erz盲hlt er die Geschichte des Malers Klingsor, der seinen letzten Sommer in Italien verbringt und in zehn Episoden 眉ber das Leben, die Liebe und die Kunst sinniert.
Die Erz盲hlung quillt f枚rmlich 眉ber vor Lebenslust, man bekommt nicht 眉bel Lust, es Hesse (und Klingsor) gleichzutun und einige Jahre in Italien zu verbringen um dort das Leben zu genie脽en. Nebenbei erh盲lt man Einblicke in Hesses eigene Malerei - nicht nur ist das Buch mit einigen seiner Aquarelle aus seiner Zeit in Italien ausgeschm眉ckt, man liest auch heraus, wie viel ihm die Malerei bedeutet hat und welche Gedanken ihm als K眉nstler durch den Kopf gegangen sind.

Hesses Schreibstil ist einfach traumhaft. Die Geschichte liest sich weg wie nichts und l盲sst den Leser dabei zwar wehm眉tig, aber vor allem gl眉cklich zur眉ck.
Dieses Buch rutscht sofort an die Spitze meiner Wunschliste und vor allem in dieser wundersch枚nen (2017er) Ausgabe vom Insel Verlag ist es eines, das man immer wieder gern zur Hand nehmen wird.
