A complete beginning grammar text that uses copywork, narration, picture study, and other classical techniques to develop the young student’s language ability. Scripted lessons give the teacher direction and confidence, while exquisite pencil reproductions of great paintings are used to encourage children in oral composition. Originally published as a single two-year volume, Level 1 (Grade 1, this book) and Level 2 (Grade 2, available separately) have been redesigned as two separate simple-to-use one-year programs. Grade Recommendation: Grade 1 . Black-and-white illustrations
Introductory textbook for teaching young kids about grammar and language, with step-by-step lessons. There is some really good emphasis on exercising the memory - kids memorize short poems. My 2nd & 3rd grade kids did really well with this book, and we are moving on to the 2nd book . . .
This book was too simple for my first grader. The lessons were repetitive and boring. While I do love the ease of these short, simple lessons, my son got fed up with it after the third or fourth week. I think there are easier ways to demonstrate the same grammar without going through the lessons. we may use them again with my younger two boys, but I think I would start it a year or two earlier. My preschooler has more interest in the lessons than my first grader.
I gave this a preliminary thumb-through after finishing _Teach You Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons_. It follows a similar scripted teaching style and seems a logical next step. I'll re-rate it after my daughter has worked her way through it.
