Heisenberg) was a German theoretical physicist who made foundational contributions to quantum mechanics and is best known for asserting the uncertainty principle of quantum theory. In addition, he made important contributions to nuclear physics, quantum field theory, and particle physics.

He won the 1932 Nobel prize in physics "for the creation of quantum mechanics, the application of which has, inter alia, led to the discovery of the allotropic forms of hydrogen".

One of the most pleasent surprises I had so far concerning a book, or a scientific book atleast.
I wanted to read this book mainly because I thought it would be instructive and heard a lot about him and his uncertainty principle in other books. It was instructive, but in a different way that I expected. Heisenberg really told a great story, not focusing on advanced physics notions but more on it's development in the first part of the 20th century and how difficult was to except the new idea of quantum mechanics.

The thing I liked the most about this book was the way it's written and how great voices of great personalities, such as Einsten, Bohr, Planck, are being heard in what the author tried to do: their own approximate words.

It is really great how men with this kind of profession can talk about etics and philosophy.
Also, a wonderful testimony about the nazi period, Hitler's rise to power and how they were forced to make difficult decisions.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a bit of knowledge about mathematics and such.

Amazing book. The closest you can get to knowing Werner Heisenberg. I was surprised by the way he has written the book and how he managed to combine biography with physics discussions. Fascinating read

Memoiren mag ich eigentlich 眉berhaupt nicht. Schon die Idee, das eigene Leben autobiographisch festzuhalten, finde ich in den meisten F盲llen tendenziell gr枚脽enwahnsinnig und gleichzeitig schrecklich langweilig - gef眉llt sind die Seiten (so meine Vorurteile) oft mit aufgeblasenen Egos und Verf盲lschungen der jeweiligen eigenen Geschichte, um retrospektiv besser dazustehen. Werner Heisenberg tappt mit Sicherheit hier und da auch in diese Fallen (oft klingt er wahnsinnig selbstgef盲llig, sogar wenn er r眉ckblickend Fehler eingesteht) und doch war f眉r mich 鈥濪er Teil und das Ganze鈥� aus zwei Gr眉nden ein absoluter Gewinn.

Erstens bietet es, zumindest f眉r Laien wie mich, eine hervorragende Einf眉hrung in die Geschichte der Quantenmechanik und teilweise der Physik allgemein - einfach und anschaulich geschrieben und selten langweilig.

Zweitens handelt es sich hier um ein ungemein interessantes historisches Dokument, welches, aus der Sicht eines jungen gebildeten Mannes, den Wandel seines Umfelds von einem global vernetzten, wissenschaftlich progressiven hin zu einem nationalistisch regressiven beschreibt. Bis zu Kapitel 11 (1933) scheint es dem jungen Heisenberg kaum m枚glich, diesen Wandel in irgendeiner Form vorherzusehen - viel zu optimistisch und weltoffen ist die akademische Bubble, in der er sich tagt盲glich bewegt und von der er f盲lschlicherweise auf die restliche Gesellschaft schlie脽t. Sehr viel aufmerksamer ist da offenbar Niels Bohr, der Heisenberg schon in Kapitel 4 (1922) auf den blinden Fleck in seiner Wahrnehmung in Bezug auf das politische Potential in Deutschland hinweist. Im Gegensatz zu Heisenberg geh枚rt Bohr nicht der Deutschen Mehrheitsgesellschaft an und kann sich sein politisches Desinteresse schlicht nicht leisten.

Heisenbergs gro脽e (selbst eingestandene) Fehleinsch盲tzung der historischen Situation und seiner gewichtigen Position darin f眉hrt letztendlich 眉ber Umwege mit zum Bau und Abwurf der amerikanischen Atombombe und ihn zu der Erkenntnis, dass auch Wissenschaft sich einer politischen Verantwortung niemals entziehen darf.

Allen Beschwichtigern der heutigen Zeit empfehle ich dringend die Lekt眉re solcher zeitgeschichtlichen Berichte - global vernetzte Akademiker und eine progressive Diskussionskultur boten damals keinen Schutz vor Faschismus und bieten ihn auch heute nicht.

Quelle lecture passionnante !

Ce livre est une autobiographie "intellectuelle" de Heisenberg. Il y retrace donc son parcours intellectuel, les grandes r茅flexions qui l'ont fait avancer. Il s'agit de la premi猫re autobiographie de ce type que je lis, et je n'en suis pas d茅莽ue ! Certes, il manque des 茅v茅nements que toute personne s鈥檌nt茅ressant 脿 la physique conna卯t : le Nobel en 1932, le cinqui猫me congr猫s Solvay en 1927. Ce sont des dates cl茅s que Heisenberg n'茅voque pas, ou tr猫s rapidement : par exemple, le congr猫s Solvay dans le chapitre Premi猫res discussions sur la relation entre science et religion dans lequel il relate une discussion entre Wolfgang Pauli, Paul Dirac, et lui-m锚me. Que dit-il 脿 propos du congr猫s en lui-m锚me ? Absolument rien. Et cela n'est pas g锚nant, parce que ce n'est pas Wikip茅dia que nous lisons. L'茅volution intellectuelle d'une personne est cent fois plus int茅ressante qu'un catalogue de dates.

C'est un livre que chaque personne qui s'adonne 脿 l'茅tude des sciences se doit de lire. Il allie plusieurs disciplines, 脿 savoir : physique, math茅matiques, philosophie, politique, histoire... La vari茅t茅 des sujets trait茅s invite constamment 脿 continuer sa lecture.

De plus, Heisenberg 茅tant une figure centrale de la m茅canique quantique, il incarne l'茅volution m锚me de la physique pendant une grande partie du XX猫me si猫cle. Nous assistons 脿 travers ce livre 脿 plusieurs avanc茅es scientifiques majeures, et 脿 des discussions passionnantes entre de grands chercheurs (Bohr, Einstein, Rutherford...). Ce livre fait 茅galement r茅f茅rence 脿 d'autres th茅ories et concepts d'incontournables penseurs et savants tels que Platon, Kant, Schr枚dinger, Planck, Lorenz...

L'茅criture est simple et claire. Toutefois, certains passages sont plus difficiles 脿 comprendre puisqu'ils font appel 脿 des connaissances que tous les lecteurs n'ont pas forc茅ment, notamment en physique et philosophie.

This is an amazing book. Heisemberg is one of the scientists right that were right in the middle of the quantum physics revolution. He shares with his the readers the works of scientists, the difficulties they had to overcome, and how those theories took form. But that鈥檚 not all. He also renders his unique views of a mad world, consumed by wars and intolerance. And you need no background in physics at all to appreciate it. It鈥檚 one of the best books I鈥檝e ever read.

Existen muchos libros sobre la figura de Heisenberg, pero sin duda para todos aquellos que le interese la historia de la f铆sica leer directamente a uno de los mas grandes f铆sicos es algo imprescindible porque Heisenberg no solo nos habla de f铆sica en este libro, nos habla de sus fundamentos filos贸ficos (bastante intrincados por momentos); adem谩s siempre se ha especulado del papel que jug贸 en la carrera por la fabricaci贸n de la bomba at贸mica as铆 que que mejor que leer las reflexiones del protagonista que desde dentro del nazismo vio como esa monstruosidad crecia y se llevaba todo por delante

Story of discovery and development of Quantum theory written in a form of autobiography of Heisenberg.
This book is a part of series called 鈥淲orld Series鈥� which invited scholars who joined intellectual and spiritual movement of helping the world to be perceived through critical thinking.

Heisenberg himself is one of the most prominent figures in theoretical physics and quantum mechanics development. However his decision to stay in Germany during the WWII made the world /especially Americans including Oppenheimer/ left suspicious of his motives. In his own words, he told the story of how he consulted with Max Planck and decided to stay for the future of the country where good hearted scientists would be help rebuilding after the war, while keeping the enemy close (Nazis) and slowing down the process of atomic bomb building ordered by the Nazis. He and his team managed not build one for the good of humanity and was shocked by the Hiroshima bombing news. Otto Hahn /discovered uranium enrichment/ was horrified by the creation of mass destruction weapon only later to understand discovery and innovation are greatly different. During war time, scientists鈥� were hugely troubled by ethical conundrums, many fell ill in depression.

In this book, the reader will learn and read in person conversations shared with greatest thinkers in human history.. frequent with Niels Bohr, Otto Hahn, Max Born, Max Planck, Wolfgang Pauli, Einstein, Paul Dirac, Erwin Schr枚dinger, Ernst Rutherford, Hans Euler, Enrico Fermi all taking place in infamous G枚ttingen, Leipzig, Zurich and Munich.

A historical document of prime importance well written with coherence and reads like a novel.

Most of the grownups I knew in childhood had been in WWII, Dad serving in both theatres, Mom and most other relatives having lived in occupied Norway. Further, childhood occurred during the Cold War. Not a day passed from, say, age ten without thoughts of sudden death in an atomic exchange. Concurrently, with intellectual development, first in the sciences, then in the humanities and social sciences, I found myself ever-more at home with German science, German literature and German culture. Indeed, the family name was Saxon, traced back to a certain Johannes who was made a count (a "graf")in Electoral Saxony in the sixteenth century.

Naturally, then, when we in PHYS 105 (physics for non-physicists) at Grinnell College were assigned to read Heisenberg's explicatory apologetic for his involvement in nuclear physics during the Nazi period in Europe, I was much drawn into the text and enjoyed the read, particularly the autobiographical and political portions of it.

One of the most interesting books I've read, booth from a historical and scientific perspective. Heisenberg describes his and his collegues work through what he remembered from their dialogues, which makes the book more interesting, as alternate views are always presented. If you're interested in history, quantum physics and philosophy this book is a must read! Fortunate for me it's translated into swedish: Delen och helheten.

Opet mi je postalo jasno kako je beskrajno te拧ko odbaciti predstave koje su dotad va啪ile za nas kao osnova mi拧ljenja i nau膷nog rada. Ajn拧tajn je svoje 啪ivotno delo posvetio istra啪ivanju onog objektivnog sveta fizikalnih zbivanja koji napolju, u prostoru i vremenu, proti膷e nezavisno od nas, po 膷vrstim zakonima. Matemati膷ki simboli teorijske fizike trebalo je da preslikaju taj objektivni svet i samim tim omogu膰e predskazivanja o njegovom budu膰em pona拧anju. A sada se tvrdilo da - ako se spustimo do atoma - takvog objektivnog sveta u prostoru i vremenu uop拧te nema i da matemati膷ki simboli teorijske fizike slikaju samo ono 拧to je 尘辞驳耻膰苍辞, a ne ono 拧to je stvarno. Ajn拧tajn nije bio spreman da dopusti da mu se tlo izmakne pod nogama. I docnije u 啪ivotu, kada je kvantna teorija ve膰 odavno postala 膷vrsto utvr膽en sastavni deo fizike, on nije mogao da izmeni svoje stanovi拧te. Kvantnu teoriju je hteo da uva啪i kao privremeno, ali nipo拧to kao kona膷no razja拧njenje atomskih pojava. "Bog se ne kocka" - to na膷elo bilo je za Ajn拧tajna nepokolebljivo utvr膽eno i on nije dopu拧tao da ga iko uzdrma. Bor je na to mogao samo da odgovori: "Ipak nije na拧 zadatak da Bogu pripisujemo kako da upravlja svetom". (91)

The author takes us through the most important conversations of his life.Conversations with people ranging from members of the German Youth movement,eminent contemporary physicists,philosophers & even politicians.The concerned topics span the arts,religion,metaphysics,philosophy,nature(in the most general sense),consciousness,language,politics and of course,atomic physics.The book is also semi-autobiographical though the focus is always on the conversation & the various views presented via the conversation.


All these conversations contain in them a very elaborate & deep understanding of the topics they touch upon.Needless to say,this is a treasure trove for anyone interested to know how some of the greatest physicists of the 20th century interacted with each other,where they differed & how the World war affected them.I would argue that even otherwise this book can supply enough enjoyment to a person not so interested in physics or mathematics.

This book is like a great excursion into the thoughts and fundamentals of Science & other ancillary/complementary schools of thoughts.


P.S.: The author also does a great job of translating the scenic beauty of the locations where the various conversations took place,into words.

Highly recommend this book.

This autobiography by one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics is a gem. It uses an unconventional style, heavy on fabricated dialog, to get straight to the matters at the heart of Heisenberg's life. In the early chapters the author finds his way into the world of physics and grapples with the still-unsolved questions of the atom and nucleus, along the way meeting and befriending the giants of the time: Einstein, Bohr, Planck, Pauli, Dirac. But then, as the narrative enters the 1930s, things take a melancholy turn as the German physics community either chooses to or is forced to flee Nazi Germany. Heisenberg chooses to remain and to work in Hitler's atomic research program. In this book he frankly and openly discusses his decisions of the time and their fortuitous outcome鈥攖hat Germany never got close to making a bomb, and that he was on the ground to help the country rebuild after.

The book gives frank and honest insight from a man who was at the center of scientific and political history in the 20th Century. It does not necessarily give much overview, so a basic background in the history of atomic physics and the major political events of the last century are needed in order to fully appreciate it.
