Ken Follett is one of the world’s most successful authors. Over 170 million copies of the 36 books he has written have been sold in over 80 countries and in 33 languages.

Born on June 5th, 1949 in Cardiff, Wales, the son of a tax inspector, Ken was educated at state schools and went on to graduate from University College, London, with an Honours degree in Philosophy later to be made a Fellow of the College in 1995.

He started his career as a reporter, first with his hometown newspaper the South Wales Echo and then with the London Evening News. Subsequently, he worked for a small London publishing house, Everest Books, eventually becoming Deputy Managing Director.

Ken’s first major success came with the publication of Eye of the Needle in 1978. A World War II thriller set in England, this book earned him the 1979 Edgar Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America. It remains one of Ken’s most popular books.

In 1989, Ken’s epic novel about the building of a medieval cathedral, The Pillars of the Earth, was published. It reached number one on best-seller lists everywhere and was turned into a major television series produced by Ridley Scott, which aired in 2010. World Without End, the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth, proved equally popular when it was published in 2007.

Ken’s new book, The Evening and the Morning, will be published in September 2020. It is a prequel to The Pillars of the Earth and is set around the year 1,000, when Kingsbridge was an Anglo-Saxon settlement threatened by Viking invaders.

Ken has been active in numerous literacy charities and was president of Dyslexia Action for ten years. He was chair of the National Year of Reading, a joint initiative between government and businesses. He is also active in many Stevenage charities and is President of the Stevenage Community Trust and Patron of Home-Start Hertfordshire.

Ken, who loves music almost as much as he loves books, is an enthusiastic bass guitar player. He lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with his wife Barbara, the former Labour Member of Parliament for Stevenage. Between them they have five children, six grandchildren and two Labradors.

DNA Robots?

Suppose there’s someone out there who looks exactly like you a clone a twin brother you’ve never seen nor met. Moreover, that twin of yours, instead of being a good father, mother, sister, brother or citizen, entertains himself killing people around. And... since he looks exactly like you, you will be frequently accused as the author of his hedious crimes!...

Oh boy, Oh boy, that’s gonna be quite an issue! On top of the consequent stream of social problems, you’ll probably start questioning yourself about your own goodness. The moment you find out about a psycho killer who happens to be your identical twin, you can be assaulted by serious doubts concerning the status of your own nature (among other surprisingly disturbing things, that happened to Steve, the main character of this plot)...

All in all, this is a book about human nature are we programmed by DNA to be who we are, or do we have a menu?! A list of options from where to chose?!
Are we responsible from what we are here and now, or are we genetic marionettes?!
For the record, I don’t see myself as a DNA Robot, do you?!...

The Third Twin is a Delicious Dish for Thought 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Third Twin is my second Ken Follet reading after "The Pillars of the Earth" and I have to admit that is impossible to compare this two books. Don't misunderstand me, I think that the third twin is a great book but only if you love thriller novels that mix science, politics and conspiracy theories and you want to spend a great time reading a Hollywood blockbuster style book.

Even good writers sometimes publish not-so-good books and this is the one for Follet. Parts of the book are interesting, but the overall feel is it's just barely interesting. The scene in the prison with the guard, the rat and the knife had to be the worst written scene that I have ever read in a major author's book; completely senseless and totally unbelievable. Follet has written great books and I will continue to read him, but I cannot recommend this one.

No. Definitivamente jamás volveré a leer El tercer gemelo.

I really tried to like this but the amount of nonsensical plot devices got in the middle.
It gets really ridiculous to the point of no return, you can easily compare it with a B-Movie (where B would stand for BAD).
I've read some reviewers say the problem was the book didn't date very well, but I can hardly believe this could have been considered good at some point.

What happened to Ken Follett? His earlier works, such as The Key to Rebecca and Eye of the Needle, were well-crafted thrillers. The Third Twin is sophomoric with every character a stereotype. The novel has little suspense, no interesting characterizations, with foolish plot devices and juvenile twists abound. Ken must be simply churning out the pulp to make a few bucks. Save your money.

Wow, what an interesting book. This book had my attention from beginning to end and being a true story did not hurt. I am always interested in extensive research when it comes to humans and their genetics. Its sad to believe that skilled scientists would use innocent people to capitalize for their own gain. The medical field is one of the worst fields for being inconsistent with the welfare of adults and children.

The lifetime movie helped me follow the book. The movie is nowhere close to being as interesting as the book but I am glad I watched it.

This story was told very well and it is definitely relevant in today's society.

I was in fact a litle aprehensive when I bought this book. I think it was because it was old and I was affraid it would be outdated. I was surprised I have to say. This book kept my interest throughout and it was enjoyable.

I really liked the Idea of having phsychology and biology all mixed together creating a very interesting thriller that will hook you from the start.

Of course this isn't the pinnacle of Follett, BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE "THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH" but nonetheless it's worth your money and your time.

We find Follett’s medieval stories to be great, and his wartime spy novels fairly good; and so looked forward to a modern-day storyline in “Twin. It’s difficult to summarize the plot without spoiling it, although the book’s title helps us figure out what’s going on about 150 pages before the key players do! A researcher, Jeannie Ferrami, is doing clever studies on twins raised apart, where one is a criminal and the other a good guy working on the old nature versus nurture argument. When her best friend is raped and the good guy is blamed (but we know no way), we all presume the bad twin did it, but he’s in jail. You can almost guess the rest.

While the plot was somewhat clever and the contemporary setting a twist from the author’s other work, the action here was just so far-fetched we could barely wait to get to the end but not from suspense but rather that feeling of “oh, come on, this could never happen. When a few romantic elements are the most memorable takeaway from a Follett novel, something is definitely wrong.

While we suppose the author was trying to illuminate issues surrounding genetic research, and to a lesser degree, computer-based searches through massive databases, we cannot in good faith recommend this totally implausible tale.

This is one of those books that has left me conflicted because I've read other people's reviews since finishing and I agree with elements of both the 1 star reviews and the 5 star reviews!

I really liked the plot and the pacing of the story. It's an easy read and I wanted to keep reading. The story is far-fetched but kind of works overall at surface level. I was entertained.

However, there were parts of the story that I strongly disliked and didn't work for me including intellectual snobbery, women not supporting women, overly aggresive police officers, superficiality & instalove (see the 1 & 2 star reviews for more details).

I find that Ken Follett typically writes a great story, full of intrigue and drama....BUT...(did you sense that coming???) he seems to feel the need to "dirty-up" his books. His women swear like sailors and talk dirty, and without fail, every one of his books contain scenes that can only be described as sex from a man's perspective. A woman would make the scene "romantic" and he just somehow seems to make it nasty. (I hate that word, but I can't think of something more descriptive.) Though I enjoy his plots, I believe he'll be a PASS from me in the future.

Grande estreia!
***

A história base deste livro é intrigante, no mínimo.

Hard to believe this one was penned by the same man as Key to Rebecca, Pillars of the Earth and Fall of Giants, which, not being literature masterworks, are highly enjoyable and recommended reads. This one has some ideas and suspense, but plays out like a horrible b-movie...

I dialoghi.

I picked up this book with high hopes only because it was written by Ken Follet. Now I am asking the same question that most of the reviewers have asked- did Ken Follett really write this?
The thriller had a very interesting premise, which started well but later messed up with badly written characters, ridiculous action, and cringe-worthy romance.
I have read a book by Robin Cook with a similar plot. I don’t remember much, but I don’t think he made a sleaze-fest out of it.

One positive thing was the mention of a search engine, which was quite futuristic at the time when the book was published (Google founded in 1998 and this book published in 1996)

The characters - I wish he could write strong female characters like he did in 'Pillars of the earth'. Just because the heroine Jeannie has a PhD, 6 ft tall with model-like looks and a tennis- pro, doesn’t make her strong. She was self-centered and had skewed set of priorities and morals.
-She uses her search program to look for identical twins who were raised apart (and probably don't even know of the other's existence) and still claims that there is no invasion of privacy. But when she unearths a questionable experiment, she starts freaking about unethical practices.
- I am glad I don’t have any friend like Jeannie. She gets her friend Ghita into trouble asking her to run dubious tests, posing some unreasonable arguments. She doesn’t believe her friend Lisa when she points to Steve as a rapist, and believes Steve whom she has just met, even before seeing any proof of his innocence ? She even blackmails Lisa into helping her telling her how she saved Lisa from a burning building.

All characters behave irrationally. Why else would a man accused of rape released on bail first think of professing love to a woman he just met, than trying to get his name cleared.

The last third of the book where the protagonists uncovered the conspiracy was laughable.

Caution- if this is the first Ken Follett you are reading, please don’t, you might never pick up another Ken Follet again, which is a pity because his historical fiction is a class apart from this crap.

I'm always skeptic about thrillers. I feel that the style most thrillers writters write, Follett himself, is dry and not emotional. This one superated my expectations. Really good novel

A new twist on the "secret twin/lookalike" plot -- multiple identical-looking and similarly behaving guys who are unrelated. Jeannie is a scientist researching causes of criminal behavior by comparing sets of twins raised separately. When one of her subjects is accused of raping her lab tech she realizes there must be another "twin" that she hasn't located. When she tries to find the guilty party she inadvertantly threatens to expose a conspiracy and endangers herself. The science aspect of this novel was a bit weak but it was an entertaining read for my long international plane flight. However, be warned that there is quite a bit of sexual assault described so if reading about such matters makes you uncomfortable you may want to skip this book.

super recomendado!!!

This is the first audiobook I've listened to that made me pity the narrator. Not because the narrator struggled with the material (January LaVoy could narrate a Macedonian phone book backwards), but because, like me, she had to read the book.

There are so many grating things about this book. Here are a few:

1. The author is really bad at depicting US culture. Like, he's got the military-industrial complex thing down pat, but how people in the US act, think, and talk in everyday life seems to challenge Follett. For example, characters are constantly drinking coffee and offering it to others. It doesn't matter the time of day or how long a person plans to be in a given place, a nice character will offer them coffee. Then there's the language. I'd never heard the word "turnkey" refer to a corrections or court officer until I read this book where I heard the word four billion times.

2. Did you know that women have bodies? Thankfully, Ken Follett is here to remind us with constant descriptions of the female characters' physical appeal or lack thereof. At one point, two female characters even have a conversation in public--at their workplace--about their breasts and how having such breasts makes them feel. Objectifying women at every chance is always a bad look, but it's especially repugnant in a story about rape.

3. The two protagonists, Jeannie and Steve, are utterly unlikeable.

This book is garbage. Whatever January LaVoy was paid to read this, it wasn't enough.
