I've casually read through this lengthy 712 page tome cover to cover, noting favourable passages. Abu Nuwas's poetry is most celebrated for its debauchery. He reached new heights in rhyming about alcohol and innovated the representation of fair boys in Arabic poetry, a well-established motif in Persian. He requires no introduction to Arabic Lit students.
Yet despite his notoriety and renowned libertine spirit, some of the poems in this volume do not seem to be his. This observation is not new, biographers have struggled with giving convincing explanations for what ultimately comes across as contradictory messages. Historians and chroniclers have long highlighted how much of the poems circulated by the public are wrongly attributed to him and only Allah knows its correct place of origin (cf. Ibn Kathir's al-bidayah wa al-nihayah, for eg). Thus a more critical collection is in order.
Would appreciate the update if others are aware of one such edition.
