A sequel to Backwoods and Shivaree.Six months ago Natalie drove away from Louisiana and a three-day, two-man rebound to be reckoned with. Now back in snowy Rochester, she wasn’t expecting to see either of those Southern gentlemen again. She certainly wasn’t expecting to find one standing in her work parking lot one afternoon without a word of warning.Cold turkey is what Shane’s after. He’s been with his lover Gabriel for a year now—a year of hot sex and obsessive attraction that’s left him with a death grip on the tattered remains of his heterosexuality and too many sleepless nights. Desperate for a clean break, Shane hopes hiding out at Natalie’s for a week or two will do the trick. She sure as hell owes him one fine rebound. But Shane quickly discovers that banishing Gabriel from his heart and his head is easier said than done. His cold-turkey recovery is headed straight for an epic relapse, and Shane’s going to have to make a choice—the traditional life he thinks he wants, or the man he can’t seem to live without.

Really ended up liking this series more than I thought I would. Probably because it ended the way I wanted it to....

Shockingly enough, Shane grew on me too. And I do think Natalie served her purpose.

This series set my ipad on fire. It was off the charts hot - the MM, the MF, the MFM and the MMF. Cara McKenna can right some steam no doubt about that.

This was just the book I needed after the intense, adrenaline rush of my prior read.

5 Big Stars! This third and final installment in the Shivaree series packed a powerful, emotional punch.

Shane has been living in denial when it comes to his feelings for his lover Gabriel. Never having been attracted to a man before, Gabriel has upended Shane’s life. He’s been living in a sexual, often drunken haze for the past year as his addiction for Gabriel consumes his life. He decides to quit him cold turkey and seek out the only person, who knows about his secret sex life. Natalie not only knows about the two men, she has shared a bed with them.

Natalie is one of my favorite heroines ever. Never judgmental, she offers Shane a place to crash while he while he sorts through his life. They share some hot intimate sex, and for a few days Shane feels he has a handle on reality again. He thinks maybe Natalie might be what he’s looking for, to share his life, give him the family he dreams of, and help him to severe his tie to Gabriel forever. What he gets is Natalie and her honest opinion of what she sees and thinks of the men and their relationship. Very eye-opening and inspiring advice. She is a beautiful character!

Gabriel is not willing to let go of Shane and has some thoughts of his own about what he wants from him. This sweet, endearing vagabond wants to make a life with the man he loves, if only that man will love him back.

“You know who I’m really jealous of, Shane? Each and every damn day? Shane shook his head.
Gabriel took a seat on Natalie’s futon, clasping his hands between his knees and staring Shane square in the face. “Everyone. Zach and Jeanne. All your customers and your pals from the garage, every fuckin delivery person who comes through that door.
Everyone you joke around with, who you barely know, when you won even look me in the eyes when we got our clothes on.

Gabriel’s heartfelt confession of his love for Shane is moving, touching and nearly brought me to tears. Cara McKenna’s writing shines when the two of them lay the cards on the table and open up to each other, it’s overwhelming! I adore these two amazing men. The ending was not what I expected, but in my heart I know it was the right one.

This is a well-written, thoughtful, smart, erotic story, which will have you thinking about these characters long after you put the book down.

**This series needs to be read in order starting with , then to truly appreciate the story and the characters**

In Getaway, the storyline opens six months after the ending of Shivaree with Shane and Gabriel’s relationship reaching a breaking point at least for Shane. Since the conception of their relationship, Shane struggled with the concept of fully committing to Gabriel and to being in an openly gay relationship. After losing a close family member, Shane feels the need to settle down and surround himself with a traditional family. Questioning his values and needs, Shane quits Gabriel “cold turkey, and takes a road trip to visit their friend, Natalie.

“There were two things Shane wanted out of this trip. One was a friend, and the other was a chance to figure out whether or not he’d wrecked his heterosexuality irreparably.

During Shane’s visit with Natalie, Shane tries to confront his insecurities about committing to Gabriel and really tries to examine what he can offer him. Trusting Natalie with such intimate moments is natural for Shane and he able to get some good advice from her. With some soul searching, Shane knows what he should do but just cannot take the risk.

“You ain’t the victim you think you are, Shane. Not only that, you’re a fuckin coward.

Unfortunately for Shane, he is completely lost without Gabriel but then the unexpected happens and he quickly realizes what he needs to do. From this moment, Shane comes full circle and declares his true feelings to Gabriel. For me, this was truly the most intimate and honest moment for these men, feeling their deep connection of love and desire. Despite the heartache Shane and Gabriel felt during their separation, they make up for it in spades and the sexual chemistry is off the charts!

“Now I’m letting you have it, so fuck me right. Fuck me like I fuck you. Tear me up.

Each volume in this series signifies the progression of Shane and Gabriel’s relationship. In Getaway, the evolution of how these characters have grown was heartwarming and fulfilling. Shane’s development felt natural and in synch with his character. As for Gabriel, everything that I hoped came to fruition. Due to convincing dialogue and emotional transitions, both Shane and Gabriel’s characters felt so genuine throughout this series and I couldn’t be more pleased with the ending.

The Shivaree series is about acceptance, honesty, introspective, communication, friendship desire and love. Shane and Gabriel have made an everlasting impression on me and I highly recommend this erotic yet probing series.

I'm going to combine my review for all three books in this series because in my mind they are all one big book. You can't read one without the other.

This series ROCKS!! Not just in an "I enjoyed it and want others to read it" kind of way but more of a "these scenes are going to my spank bank for eternity and I will never let go of the characters in my mind" kind of way.
I'm mentally challenged I know - but these three stories are made of awesome.

Cara McKenna is a floorless erotic writer. Her characters have depth and the sex is 100%, get you horny as a toad, HOT.

Originally I started reading this series out of order. I started on book two and fell in love with Gabriel and Natalie and found Shane to be the third wheel I wanted to kick off in the hope he would disappeared in the forest.

It wasn't until I was told by some very dedicated and truly fabulous book buddies that I had to STOP, do not pass GO, do not collect $200, just get my ass back to the first book. Thank the heavens I listened, because this series wouldn't have packed nearly as much punch if it was read out of order.

Starting at book one I fell utterly in love with Shane. I literally ached for him. He may have been gruff and broody but DAYUM he was one hell of a mighty fine gruff and broody man.

Half way through I started wishing that Gabriel would leave the love triangle so Natalie and Shane could have a more stable relationship and life.

In the end Cara McKenna had woven together a fan-fucking-tastic story. I loved the ups and downs, loved the way it pulled me in and made the outside world become non-existent until I finished reading.

Highly recommend this to erotic romance fans and lovers of man on man action.

5 "absolutely scorching" stars

I have actually no words to describe the elevation i feel after reading this...
and before you start dwelling upon what I meant by this statement, I'll just say this, as this is a sort of a novel (not so many pages counting) I find it refreshing to read such a well written conclusion to a three part series...

It's well thought out, smart and well put together in a mixture of real life issues, insecurities, acceptance by the society, surroundings, growing with the conscious of your own decision that will change the outcome of not one life but two...

Shane, insecure witin himself about the status of his one year sexually based relationship with Gabriel, sents him off to a refuge. He visits Natalie.
He runs away from himself, from mixed feelings he has, from possible labels that might be put on him, he seeks comfort in the socialy acceptable intercourse...

while he feels normalcy with Natalie, he's trying to convince himself that it's the "right" way to seek happiness - picket fence house, kids...but his heart is restless, and seeking for answers, so instead of a relief, Shane gets even more torn apart, battling and struggling against the primal emotion he cant escape from...and when the one that holds his heart comes to him...opening himself to him and taking his own swelling heart into Shane's hands...truth will find the way out of the confines of imposed cuffs of society rules.

Simply wow!

and yes, I am not forgetting the same amount of scorching sex filled with strong emotional impact from the characters making the statement loud and clear - that matters of the HEART knows NO BOUNDARIES or DIFFERENCIES in COLOR or GENDER, NO ISSUES whatsoever- which only makes this novel one exquisite reading material.

WARNING .... this book contains M/M, M/M/F, M/F

Approx 6 months have passed since Natalie left Shane & Gabriel to return to Rochester, NY.

She`s settled back into her life and at the end of a working day, as she`s walking to her car, a blast from her past is waiting for her in the parking lot.

Shane just up and left Gabriel to getaway for awhile and the only place he knew he could go was to see Natalie.

She`s the only person who was privy to Shane`s relationship with Gabriel and really, the only other person Shane felt comfortable with.

She invites him to stay with her while he figures out what he wants from life.
He`s adamant that Gabriel will always need a woman to satisfy some part of himself, and Shane isn`t sure he`s the sharing type.

She asks Shane where he sees himself 5 years from now:
I want a little bit of what my momma gave me. You know, nothing fancy, just closeness. Like family.

He`s not sure where he sees himself down the road and doubts that Gabriel can be apart of his future.
He`s the thing that keeps me from changing and moving forward.

During his visit, Natalie subtly tries to convince him that Gabriel is the person meant for him, but Shane still struggles with whether he can give himself entirely to another man.

While he weighs his options, he and Natalie agree to a just indulge in some fun.

I enjoyed reading his time with Natalie; it`s just what Shane needed at that moment, to slowly absorb exactly what he wants, where he sees himself in the future. Is it with a woman like Natalie; will he be happy or is he settling. These are the things that he needs to truly consider.

He`s still unsure of his decision when someone tracks him down demanding answers.

Yep, Gabriel went in search of Shane; he went to confront the man HE knows he wants more than anything.
Qoute: I love you. I know you do Shane.

The final chapter in the book was FUCKING AMAZING!!!
Quote:

I mentioned in my reviews of the other two books that I wanted to remove the F in the m/m/f genre, WELL ....... this did NOT bother me in any way with the final book.
Natalie was more of a supporter of these two. She was a friend, first and foremost and she saw right from the beginning that Shane & Gabriel belonged together.

LOVED THIS!!

This book takes place 6 month's after Shivaree.

Shane shows up at Natalie's work needing some time away from Gabriel. He still can't cope with the feelings he has for a man and can't open himself up fully to Gabriel.

Natalie has no problems with letting Gabriel stay with her but in her heart she is hoping that the two of them work it out because she know's that the two men are in love even if they won't really admit it.

Of course you get some Hot scenes between Natalie and Shane before Gabriel finally show's up. He is very mad that Shane just broke up with him. It is soon after that Shane finally realizes that he needs to open up and accept Gabriel all the way or lose him forever and OPEN UP he does in more way's then one.

This was a very good series that I really enjoyed. In the end everyone got their HEA ending.

Warning, this series contains LOT's of rough M/M sex scenes and some wild M/M/W scenes.

Thanks for the Recommendation Kris :-)

The perfect ending for these two men.I've really enjoyed this series

This book opens with Shane needing some time away from Gabriel so he decides to visit Natalie. She is surprised to see him after six months but is happy to let him stay.
I really didn't like Natalie's involvement with the two men in the last book but I've got to say I liked her character much more here.....although I still didn't like her getting down and dirty with Shane and both men towards the end.I think she could have developed strong feelings for Shane but she knows that no one can come between them permanently.

Poor Shane,he's so lost in his all consuming obsession with Gabriel. He battles with the kind of life he thinks he should have and his crazy love for Gabriel.
I was so happy when Gabriel finally stepped up and came to get Shane.

My only negative was that there was too much of Natalie in the story. However,I totally understand the necessity of her character as she helped both men both physically and emotionally.

I've really, really enjoyed this series and Shane and Gabriel are up there with my favourite M/M couples.

Natalie escaped her rebound and made it safely back to New York, but imagine her surprise when six months later she finds Shane standing outside her work looking a little lost and a whole lotta heartbroken.

Shane knows that in order to quit Gabriel, he has to get away from him. Temptation is far too strong to stick around. After a year with a hidden lover that still disappears from time to time with another body, Shane has had enough. He knows he loves the man, but it’s too toxic to suffer through any longer.

Natalie isn’t about to turn Shane away when he shows up, but she knows that what the two men share is far more than just sexual, she experienced that first hand. And although sharing a bed with Shane for a few nights is the sort of heaven her body craves, she isn’t meant to be more than just memory for these two lovers.

I loved that Gabriel gave chase and was angry. For the first time I really felt that he cared and I really needed that. I wasn’t a huge Natalie fan but she more than made up for it in this. I loved that for the first time these two characters seemed to finally be honest and completely vulnerable, not just in a lusty-sexual way either.

A fantastic ending for these characters and a hot fucking read.

This was the best, THE BEST book in the series. Left me all achey and crying and messy. Absolutely loved it!!

This was way way way better than the previous book and so beautifully written. The struggles between the characters were so real. I'm a sucker for angsty romances and this served up pretty well.

Actually, more than pretty well!

Dark, erotic, emotional and sexy. The conclusion to a brilliant series.

Getaway takes place six months after Natalie left Shivaree on seeing that there was no place for her in Shane & Gabriel’s life.
Shane is still struggling with his obsession and feelings for Gabriel and he arrives at Natalie’s home hoping to come to terms with what he wants in life and still not wanting to admit he’s gay.

Cara McKenna ends this series in a truly amazing and great way. Maybe not what I was expecting or hoping for, but nevertheless done very well.

This series has been one of the most sensual, erotic, emotional and unforgettable that I have read in a very long time.

I am looking forward to reading more of this authors books.

As much as I enjoyed the first book ... I liked this one even more. Book one is really just a tease... a prologue to the deeper, meaningful story that is book two. There was great character development, a tiny bit of back story, heartbreak and love. And of course, a whole lot of really hot, steamy sex.

Cara McKenna has yet to disappoint. Can't wait to read more from her!

This book way exceeded by expectations. I started the first book because it was relatively short and I needed a quick read after the long as fuck . I was so intrigued by Shane and Gabriel that I had to finish the series ASAP!

I rated the other two books 4 stars but this one gets 5 stars because the plot was meatier. I didn't know where the story was heading. I'm surprised how much I liked Natalie and how good of a friend she turned out to be to Shane and Gabriel. I really felt Shane's pain and I enjoyed his struggle with his heterosexuality. I like the "straight with an asterisk" label.

I was so thoroughly impressed with this series. I loved the questions Shane posed to himself and others. I loved Gabriel's honesty and openness. I loved that Natalie knew what she wanted and didn't settle. I truly felt Shane's love for Gabriel. This is going down as the best MMF book I've read!!!!

I kept a 5 star rating for all the three shorts which make up this story to reflect my final rating of the whole.

I had to stay glued to this to finish it.

The whole story hooked me that much. The story was one intense, erotic ride. The erotic was let's say erotic (umm) and let me say easy. But the human, emotional stuff that was difficult. It was intense, angsty, made me angry, sad, confused, sorry, happy, relieved.

Still have to digest the feelings. Backwoods was so intense, Shivaree left me doubtful, Getaway left me relieved but with a slight niggly feeling which I can't describe.

This is a sequel to Backwoods and Shivaree.

The book starts with Natalie back home in upstate NY. When leaving work one day, she sees Shane waiting for her. She was shocked, as she never expected to see him again.....much less in snowy NY. (Shane wasn't fond of the snow.)

Come to find out, Shane has made his escape from Gabriel. They've been lovers for a year, but Shane still can't reconcile that he is in a relationship with a man. And he can no longer stand the mysterious hold that Gabriel seems to have over him. He basically comes to Natalie seeking a rebound.

Come to find out, Shane just left Gabriel - with no clue about where he was headed. When they finally did talk, Shane officially broke up with him and also told him where he was. He didn't think Gabriel cared about him as more than a casual fuck.....until Gabriel also showed up in NY.

Of course, Shane and Gabriel have some hot "reunited and it feels so good" sex. And both confess their feelings for each other. Eventually.

Ok - so where does this leave Natalie. Well, before Gabriel arrived, she was having the hot monkey rebound sex with Shane. And honestly, I loved Natalie and Shane together. They had true passion and I think there was love there.....although maybe not the conventional vanilla variety. Shane was definitely in love with Gabriel too, but there was no doubt that he wanted something with Natalie. He just wasn't sure what it was.

After Gabriel arrives, Natalie knows she's no longer needed for the hot monkey rebound sex. Until Shane invites her to help him with the one last thing he has yet to give Gabriel. (Entrance into Shane's backdoor, if ya know what I'm sayin'.) Meh, it seems a little weird - but it really isn't. It's actually really sexy and sweet - with Shane finally giving himself over to his true desires.

My only real issue with this book, besides it not being long enough (I ALWAYS want more!) is that I would have liked to have seen the three of them all end up together. There were hints that it was headed in that direction....but it didn't happen. While Shane did make the offer, Natalie declined, deciding that she didn't want to share. (Boo, Natalie! Two hot men want you? Say yes!)

Overall - I really loved this series. It was my first foray into m/m romance, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I can only hope that book 4 (and there are rumors of a book 4) will resolve my issue with the book. ;)

Solid 4 stars.

4 *I love Gabriel* stars!

I take back anything bad I said or thought about Gabriel, he's become one of my favorite characters and Shane & Gabriel one of my favorite couples.

I would have rated this higher but I felt like Natalie was too prominent in the story. I wish it had been Gabriel's POV instead of Natalie. I also wasn't all that interested in the sex scenes between Natalie and Shane. I do feel Natalie was needed in the story but her role should have been one of a side character not a main lead.

The confrontation scene between Gabriel & Shane was so well done, Gabriel broke my heart. He's just so vulnerable. Shane finally got his head out of his ass.

The ending was almost perfect! My only complaint was Natalie in the final love scene, she was such a third wheel! But it's ok because my boys ended up together.

I'm so happy I took a chance on this series.

I have been on a Cara McKenna kick recently. When I heard there was going to be a third story (after Backwoods and Shivaree) I was giddy.

When Shane shows in unexpectedly on Natalie's doorsteps, I knew things were going to get emotional. This was a very satisfying conclusion to the story. I love how This moves from being about Natalie to Shane. Knowing that it's really his sexual journey and not hers, made this all the better in my eyes. When Shane comes to that dark place where he knows his next decision will change his life...I cried.

We also get to see a side to Gabriel that we hadn't previously. A very sexy side.

If you liked the first two stories, you'll love Getaway. Big thumbs up.

Lily's Review

Getaway is the third in a series of hot exotica stories featuring Shane, Gabriel and Natalie and draws together many satisfying conclusions. I will confess I haven’t read the first two (I will now, that is guaran-goddamn-teed!) but, having said that, I really, really enjoyed it this way. How Shane and Natalie talked about Gabriel conjured him fabulously in my mind. I was so desperate to meet this vibrant, musical individual that I was literally clawing through the pages looking for him.

The story twists and turns with the characters passionate feelings for one another and their complex history tangles beautifully with the present. The dialogue is absolutely wonderful as is the internal monologue. And I found the dreams and fears Shane experienced in particular, so heart-wrenching, so palpable, that the words almost pulsed with intensity as I travelled with him on his new experiences and faced his demons.

Never once does the story feel unreal and all those loose ties are securely knotted. The sex scenes are suitably smokin and the characters incredibly likeable despite their flaws. I wonder if there is more this talented author can do with these characters. I for one would be snatching the book off the shelves the day of its release.

Verdict:

A great book, probably best enjoyed in the order the author intended but never-the-less a fantastic standalone read with believable characters and situations and several steamy, kickass bedroom scenes.

Shane finally realized that there was probably no real future with Gabriel, but instead of dealing, he takes off for Rochester to drop in on Natalie. They may not have known each other well, but she knew things about him that nobody else did, and he needed someone who would understand what he was dealing with.

Again in this story, we hear Shane and Natalie's POV's but not Gabriel's although we do hear more from him than we have in the past. We find that though Gabriel had made Shane's world go round... or spin out of control, Shane had been the center of Gabriel's world.

Now they FINALLY break the mold and talk to each other and realize that though things won't be easy, they will be there for each other.

Natalie is now a trusted friend and safe haven for a nervous Shane and becomes a part of their new relationship. I felt sorry for her, on the outside looking in so to speak. I would have found it hard to pass up Shane's offer to have her move down to Louisiana. Lucky girl... silly girl :)

Recommended. This is one of my favorite series.

I loved this, the closing episode to a great trilogy. Shane finally finds his way with the help of Natalie.

This installment starts with Natalie finding Shane waiting for her in the carpark of the rest home she now works in. He's sad, upset and totally confused about his life.

He admits to her that he's simply walked out on Gabriel, because he can't bare to share him any more, with the women Gabriel likes to take out, and the fact that he's still clinging to the belief that he's not gay.

Natalie and Shane are still as close as they were at Shivaree, and fall naturally into a relationship again, because Natalie is sure the boys are over, until Gabriel turns up after crossing half the country to get to Shane.

A fight ensues between the two men, a lot of talking and making up follows and we have a lovely HEA for all concerned.

As usual the characters Ms Mckenna writes about are believable , they could live down your street. Great writing, with no repetitions, just great characters that you feel really drawn to.

<3.5 Stars> I would of rated it hire without the chick. The 1st 3rd of the book is about Shane and Natalie and Shane's continued denial issues. I was pissed at him...and then Gabriel shows up...you finally see some different emotions from him, loss, betrayal. The POV is still Shane and sometimes Natalie and I would have loved if we had finally gotten Gabriel.

I liked their reunion didn't care for the éԲ scene at the end even though again Natalie was ad-hoc in the scene and it was about Shane giving himself to Gabriel. Natalie was just used as a crutch and that sort of made me dislike the book some, it was like even then Shane wasn’t brave enough for Gabriel.

I didn't love thid as much as the other two, though obviously I devoured it anyway. I think because I liked Gabriel's weird alien plasticity and twisted sub/domination of Shane more than I liked the humanity he had here. I guess the first two books made a HEA seem so impossible that I didn't quite buy into it this time. That said, this is head and shoulders above the competition, well written, highly intelligent, and compulsive reading.

The finale of the Shivaree series, Shane has up and left Gabriel on his own road trip to visit Natalie in New York. Shane is still unwilling to be honest about his feelings for Gabriel and is confused as to what he wants his life to be. Natalie is willing to help him sort out his feelings and ultimately Gabriel arrives.

2.5 stars, barely. I almost didn't read this after the ending to the second book in this series, but I was still holding on to the idea of a happily ever after for all three of them. And while we learned a little more about Shane, I still felt like Natalie was just a filler character. This entire series was not what I was expecting.

Seriously loved this story - the anguish, vulnerability and fear that slowly eased throughout Shane & Gabriels journey. Natalie was adorable and perfect in her supporting role - always thought she'd make for the perfect éԲ but it was lovely to see the "predictable" conclusion was not the actual outcome.
