One vampire. One case of mistaken identity. One very big problem.
After running afoul of a supernatural law enforcement agency and in desperate need of assistance, Lucien Valcouron turns to the only other vampire in town—Raven Hartley. The only problem is, Raven isn’t a vampire at all. She’s a human.
Nursing a vampire back to health isn’t high up on Raven’s bucket list, but when the infuriatingly suave Lucien turns up on her doorstep bleeding (figuratively, of course) that’s exactly what she finds herself doing. Sadly, the madness doesn’t end there.
When the pair are accused of several gruesome murders, Raven and Lucien are forced to partner up and go on the run together in an attempt to solve the crimes and clear their names.
Caught between hapless detectives, unhelpful family members, and an actual murderer, can Raven and Lucien unravel the mystery, prove their innocence, and do something about the growing attraction between them before time runs out?

This one flew by, it’s a fairly surface-level, kind of madcap case of a vampire and a human on the run from supernatural hunters while also trying to clear their names of grisly murders. It’s entertaining, but wasn’t wholly satisfying either.
Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and I think both were experienced, though I don’t recall any mention of a history for the H.
Some tropes/themes: 142 year old vampire MMC who’s mostly alone FMC with a heart condition where it can actually stop and kill her Mistaken vampiric identity Forced proximity Bumbling supernatural hunters who are oddly effective too Supernatural beefs Murder investigation Scenes with blood and discussion of humans dying to feed vampires
I felt for Raven (h) with her health history and how it negatively affected her childhood and the repercussions on her parents. The story starts with her background and then a strange meeting between herself and an unknown man on Halloween. Because of the blurb, the reader knows that the man is actually a vampire and believes that Raven is one too, but it’ll be another two years before Lucien (H) and her meet again, when he’s been injured by hunters and thinks to turn to the other vampire in town. Of course, Raven’s a human, is terrified, and then ends up embroiled in Lucien’s mess.
Some disbelief needs to be suspended with how quickly events unfold and regarding just so much of what happens. I sort of turned off my overthinking and let myself be carried away. Lucien and Raven have to work together to hide, survive, and try to figure out who’s actually at fault for murders that are happening in their city. The romance is very light and depends heavily on their forced proximity. Some background info is exchanged and they do come to know each other’s personalities well, but again, it didn't feel deep. It was sweet how he felt about her heartbeat and I liked that she was quick to treat him like a regular person. There is one steamy scene on page and there is biting during it. No “I love you’s exchanged (which is actually realistic given the situation).
In the course of their investigation, the hunters are chasing them, a couple other paranormals pop up that don’t provide much assistance but add to the small amount of world-building. A possible future relationship is hinted at between another human and paranormal. Lucien’s brother and mother also pop in at the end and his brother is hilarious, both in person and via the texts we get to see before he comes to town. I had a large hang-up with the fact that vampires kill the people they drink from and Raven compares it to eating meat. There’s a single mention of maybe a blood bank in the future, but no long term plan to avoid the casual murder for sustenance thing going on.
I thought it was super obvious who was at fault, though I didn’t guess their actual identity. It’s also easily resolved once they’re face to face. Because this moves so quickly, the resolution to all the mayhem isn’t fulfilling and the romance is HFN in that they like each other and will continue seeing each other in the future. I wanted some comeuppance to occur for someone from Raven’s past who is obnoxious in the present too. Maybe see her introducing Lucien to her family or even to her best friend. I needed to know how their relationship would work when not in each other’s pockets to avoid getting staked. Lucien and Raven saw news programs talking about them being murderers, but just heard secondhand that it was announced it was a mistake. I needed more from this overall.
4⭐️ raven is really ride or die!!! tropes: forced proximity, mystery, dual pov | medium steam | digital
characters 🩶 Raven is a woman with a heart condition that left her isolated and bullied. As an adult, she has finally found her footing and strength. I loved her a lot! Her reactions to all the mess occurring left realistic but also she was smart and came up with great plans. 🩶 Lucien is a failure of a vampire. After years of living with his mother and brother, he takes off on his own to a new city looking for something to live for. I liked his character a lot! I found him to be hilarious in his banter and liked the journey his character went on.
favorite bits 🖤 The set up of this book was so fun. From Lucien kinda sucking at being a vampire by both thinking Raven was a vampire and getting caught and staked by the S.B.E.F. 🖤 Lucien and Raven had great chemistry! I loved that this was a dual pov book because seeing them both yearn for each other even in these pressing circumstances was delicious. 🖤 There was a twist in the plot that I didn't see coming at all but was terribly interesting! I usually don't like mysteries but this one was good. It didn't feel convoluted at all and I was actually trying to figure out who it could be!
final thoughts: I really hope Anise Starre writes more paranormal books! This one was good!!
TW - death, dead bodies, murder, blood, violence incl stakes, heart defect (arrhythmia, hospital visit recounted after FMCs heart stopping), breaking and entering, grand theft auto, cancer scare (past, parent, mentioned), isolating upbringing (recounted), drugging of the FMC (not by the MMC)
Tropes - paranormal, forced proximity, jealousy, one bed, murder mystery
Representation - Black FMC, anxiety
This was a short read and I enjoyed following along with the murder mystery-esque style plot. This is very accessible if you're new to paranormal romance and/or just looking for a good time and a spooky season read. The MCs get dragged into the middle of a serial killer's crimes and need to find out who's pulling the strings whilst the authorities are closing in.
Scale: ⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite ⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪
🫑 - no smut 🌶 - no point 🌶🌶 - mediocre at best 🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot 🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 - fuck me 🥵🥵 CWs / filthy with a side of filth - see / /
Big thank you to Anise Starre for gifting me an ARC of this cutesy, fun book ily sis I’m a forever fan

The thot’s plot: This is essentially twilight if Bella and Edward weren’t insufferable and weren’t waiting until marriage (aka how twilight should’ve been). Our FMC, Raven, is just trying to get through life with her irregular heartbeat but OOPSIE a vampire (Lucien) mistakes her medical condition for supernatural status (aka her heart is so slow that he thinks she is of the vampire species as well). So Lucien accidentally pulls Raven into a roadtrip-y adventure full of the paranormal community, horny-ness, and unaliving galore! We got a little mystery and just hot camaraderie all around. I’m not saying anything else of the plot cause honestly it’s just a fun story that you go along with and have fun enjoying.
The Thot’s Thoughts: Ok I see you miss getaway car miss bella swan up in her reputation era with a heart condition pop off queen. We got cardiovascular disease rep up in here. We got a blonde MMC who doesn’t disgust me (quite the opposite actually like I was like HOTTTT) and hijinks abound. This book is fast paced and fun but (like Anise’s other books) has heart to it and has characters that feel like they could be my friends. My only wish is that it was longer cause I had such a good time reading it. It was such a fun, sweet, cozy paranormal romance that wasn’t too heavy. GOOD TIMES (AND SEXY TIMES). Also, I hope Raven sues the police department for defamation.
This book is just one of those that I enjoyed sm that I don’t have a lot to say about it like was I silent or was I silenced? I was silence cause it put me in such a good mood and got me out of my reading slump.
This was well written but boring. I skim read the last 40% which arguably had the most action/romance, but I just didn’t care enough to read it properly. I didn’t believe the romance, the bad guys were almost a caricature, and the big bad guy was easy to guess.
The other reviews are amazing so maybe it’s just me, but I just feel like it’s all a bit lacklustre.
I liked all of Anise Starre’s books and On the Run with a Vampire is her first foray into paranormal. This book was quick paced, funny and smart. Raven has a cardiac condition that makes her heartbeat irregular and because of it she is mistaken by the blond, tall and handsome vampire Lucien for one of his kind. When he is forced to look for her and ask her to help removing a stake from his back, he involuntarily involves her in the mess he’s currently in and they both have to flee as they have been framed for murder.
I liked Raven’s story and how her condition made Lucien think she was a vampire. I understood her struggles in living with it and having her people constantly worrying about her. I wasn’t surprised with the mistery, I already knew who had done it, but I had a good time. The intimacy between them is quite minimal, I would have liked to see more both in terms of sexy time and just seeing the main characters together without a sword hanging over their heads because they are very cute.
I liked the way this fictional universe is a bit meta, in the sense that it includes many references to famous fictional vampires. The secondary characters were very good. I do hope Anise Starre gets to make a series out of it, I would like to read about Lucien and Raven again, maybe solving some other mysterious case. And I would like to read Milo, Melody, Blaine and Daphne’s stories, they have a lot of potential.

On the Run with a Vampire is out today and it’s perfect if you want something slightly halloween-y as the story begins on Halloween’s night and there are all kinds of supernatural beings.
The premise of this book was unique and exciting. Raven is mistaken as a fellow vampire by Lucian, who comes to her for assistance after being targeted by an I anti-supernatural organization. Caught up in this new and dangerous situation, Raven and Lucian have to work together to survive and while on the run, they learn to lean on each other as well.
I absolutely adore Anise’s writing and this was such a different book from her! I’m obsessed. This book was interesting, fast paced, and funny. I loved the banter between the two characters, especially because Lucien is a bit of an awkward, yet lovable immortal. The exciting nature of the book also enhanced the romance and the chemistry between them.
Ultimately this is a perfect read for spooky season and I want more supernatural romances from Anise!!
I finished this book a while ago but haven’t reviewed it yet! Been busy with moving but, I have to say. This book was a 5/5! .. I loved how the author balanced the danger and romance, creating a thrilling atmosphere that kept me on edge.. medium paces relationship & has its funny moments!
If you enjoy dark paranormal romance with a perfect mix of action, suspense, and non-toxic romance, this book is a must-read. I couldn’t put it down and immediately wanted more. Highly recommend!
DNF’d at 53%. this book is well written. but i found myself skimming to get to 53% where it beat me. it was just too strung out and boring in some parts. i’m sorry. 😅
This was such a great introduction into the paranormal world with a great plot, loveable characters and steam! It’s perfect for the spooky season, and it really reminded of how I have missed Anise’s writing! 🥹
Lucien was so unintentionally funny and very likeable for a vampire, who mistakes Raven for a vampire, and suddenly finds himself in need of her help, after he’s been linked to the mysterious deaths in town, and now he’s on the run, with a human Raven in tow.
Along with Raven and Lucien, I was trying to figure out who could be the culprit and I really had the best time with them!
Thank you to my girl Anise for the e-arc, I hope this isn’t the last of your pnr era! 🤭🩸
Tropes
🩸 paranormal romance 🩸 forced proximity 🩸 human fmc x vampire mmc 🩸 hilarious banter 🩸 only one bed
Cute but a snooze. Also figured out who the killer was very early on. I wanted to love this but it was very boring and wordy or it felt wordy because it was dragging.

On the Run With a Vampire is a paranormal romance that follows human, Raven and vampire, Lucien. In early childhood, Raven was diagnosed with heart arrhythmia and, because of that, she’s lived a fairly lonely life. A few years later, Raven is on the way to a Halloween party and briefly encounters Lucien, who assumes she’s a vampire. The pair share a fleeting exchange and Raven thinks that is the last she’ll see of him. A short time after, Lucien runs into trouble and seeks out Raven’s help. This proves to be a mistake because almost as soon as the two reunite, chaos breaks out. Now on the run, the pair are falsely accused of murder and must do everything they can to clear their names, expose the real murderer, and survive.

This book kicked off my fall TBR and I really enjoyed it! I’ve read four books by Anise Starre and she absolutely crushes it every time. The banter between her characters is always so good and the FMCs are always so loveable. The chemistry between Lucien and Raven was immaculate as well!
Many thanks to Anise Starre for the opportunity to read this one as an ARC. On the Run With a Vampire is out now and would be a great addition to a fall TBR! Please be sure to check your content warnings before diving in! 🖤🧛
I had the amazing opportunity to read an ARC of anise starre’s upcoming book “on the run with a vampire that comes out Oct. 1st!! 😆
it’s a perfect “cozy murder mystery for the fall/spooky season about a vampire named Lucien who’s on the run and drags along another vampire named Raven—who isn’t actually a vampire 🤭
they get framed for a series of murders neither of them committed, so the next thing they have to do is find out who’s the one doing these senseless crimes and clear their names; this was a fun read!! 😆 it was funny, a bit spicy, and so unserious at times (in the best way 😂). I wished there was a bit more world building and we dived a bit deeper on the characters with their romance, but with everything going on, I can see there wasn’t that much time for love and romance to brew. overall, I enjoyed this book!! I just found Lucien to be so endearing 🥹 protEcT hiM!! 😫🙌🏾🤍
I’ve read all of her other interconnected books earlier this summer and had a fun time with those as well!! when I saw she was coming out with new genre, I was just as excited to see how this story was going to play out and just overall thrilled to get more of her writing ☺️ this is her first paranormal romance novel and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for these type of romances!! we need more black women in paranormal romances & being in love and loved on 😌💅🏾
This paranormal romance was very interesting. I liked Lucian’s character and Raven’s character a lot! They’re quite the soul mates for each other.
I loved how they teamed up together for these mysterious murders that were pinned against them. I do wish Cordelia’s character could have been more involved through the action scenes. A witch is always fun!!
What I didn’t like was how contradicting Warren Anderson character was. For him to do what he did didn’t seem like him, if he hated who he was so much. Also his name is Warren Anderson lol other than that it’s a super fun little read for spooky season!
This was such a fun read (although Raven would probably be upset at me for saying that). Theres a serial murder mystery, supernatural grudges, government corruption, and an on-the-run roadtrip. I really hope we get more books in this series, I need books for Milo, Cordelia, Blaine etc.
My only complaint was that I wanted more revenge. What can I say? I’m vengeful and not enough people got what they had coming. I wanted more of a wrap up, even just a “here’s where they are now type of thing
Lucien reminded me so much of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer 🤭🧛🏻
If y’all watched the adult Nancy Drew show, this had the same vibe. Paranormal with a murder mystery, romance, and funky characters, who I hope also get books (maybe the wolf and the hunter 👀, the witch and the selkie 👀👀, Blaine and someone 👀👀👀)
Can’t believe I’m giving a book by Anise 1 star! She is definitely one of my favourite authors but this book was absolutely boring but very well written. There was no chemistry or connection between the mc’s. Had really high hopes for this book
I’m not really a fan of paranormal books but this is the first one that I genuinely enjoyed reading. Ms Anise Starre knows how to write a black fmc so good, I’m completely obsessed with her writing style and characters. The storyline was so interesting and kept me interested to read more. Lucien and Ravens love story is so cute and I wanted to read more of them, I would love a second book and also a spin off on the other characters like Daphne, Blaine, Milo, and melody. Anise Starre cannot do any wrong in my eyes!!!!
This is a cute cozy paranormal mystery with Vampires. If you’re looking for something light with Vampires definitely pick up this book. We follow Raven who has arrhythmia which means her heart beats really slow. And we have Lucien a vampire who has been framed for murders gang he didn’t commit he runs into Raven and asks her for help assuming that’s she’s a vampire. Raven who most definitely is not a vampire is now on the run with a vampire trying to figure out who is behind these mysterious murders.
One thing about Anise Starre is she is going to deliver a a fluffy cute romance with lovable characters especially with her MMCs. Lucien is dark or scary but he can be what I love about him is that he’s super caring and just down bad for Raven. Raven is awesome she maybe a human but she doesn’t let the supernatural people she meets push her around.
A fun, sweet read. However, I did wish there would have been more time spent on the romance. As it stands, I would say it's 20% romance and 80% conspiracy/drama.
Also, there was not enough heat or spice for me personally.
I would have liked for her to be turned, but she wasn't, which begs the question....what are y'all doing because you will age and he won't? There wasn't even a discussion about the logistics of her settling down with someone that's immortal.
I really, really enjoyed this! Raven is a human and Lucien is a vampire, except Lucien thinks Raven is a vampire and ends up getting her mixed up in his issues. As the title suggests, they end up having to go on the run together to try and clear their names and find out who is actually behind everything. I think, if you've read enough mysteries or watched enough Law and Order, you'll guess who the true murderer is by about the 50-60% point, but that didn't take away any enjoyment for me.
I really liked Raven and Lucien's relationship and the theme of living life that was sprinkled throughout. I didn't think I'd feel sympathy for a vampire who happily kills people, but I really did. It was also nice to read about a vampire who acted like a vampire in terms of biting people. It reminded me of What We Do In The Shadows a bit in that regard. I think it would've been nice to see a bit more from Raven's side and how her condition has changed her outlook on life a little more because it's such an important part of how she comes to terms with what Lucien is and how he lives his life.
I think it would've been nice to see more worldbuilding and some more supernatural creatures, but I liked the glimpses we got. I loved the supporting characters and I think I saw hints for a second book featuring a certain werewolf and SBEF officer...A book about Blaine or Cordelia would also be pretty interesting, I think.
I thought the spice was done very well and wasn't overbearing and felt natural to the story and the pace of their relationship.
Overall, I thought this was a great read and I'd give it a 4.5. I'd recommend it to people who haven't read many paranormal books and are looking for something fun, fast, and accessible to start with.
ATE…IT…UP! Bring me back to the twilight days why don’t you! Anise…you have done it again! I loved this book so much. I think what I liked most was that it wasn’t your average vampire story. It was kind of an action story filled with some intense moments but like in a fun way. I was honestly on the edge of my seat the entire time wanting the mystery aspect of the book to be solved!
I really liked the characters in this book. Lucien and Raven were just such good characters. I mean from their past life issues, to they behaviors and mannerisms were just really created well. I think the most compelling part of this story was the plot. I also appreciated the approach to vampires in this story. It was not the same as what we normally see on TV and in movies. It honestly felt more realistic to me. Like something natural. I was really impressed by that.
I loved Raven. She was such a fighter, and from the minute she was introduced, I knew she would make Lucien fall head over heels. It was so cute. Lucien also made me laugh. He was so fun to read the perspective of. And his feelings for Raven were just beautiful.
I would read anything by Anise because I love her writing style and I love her take on certain topics. With this book, even though it was a different genre of romances, she executed it very well in my opinion. I went into this with no expectations especially with all the various vampire romances, but she made it really fun and I also noticed how she incorporated other supernatural creates.
I highly recommend this book. It was fun, lighthearted and just an overall great experience. Thank you Anise for letting me read this! I had a blast!
Anise Starre never fails to deliver on amazing contemporary romance with characters you can't help but love, amazing platonic friendships, and well-written spicy scenes 🌶 Starre is one of a handful of insta-buy authors I swear by, because I swear I have a goofy smile on my face 90% of the time, and her stories just bring me so much joy ❤️
On the Run With A Vampire brings in a fun paranormal component to Starre's typical contemporary romance, which is honestly the best of both worlds. I appreciated that it incorporated some classic tropes (one bed 🛌 hehe), but strayed away from some obvious routes it could have taken. Also, Anise and her characters are funny, which makes for a fun read, even while navigating the isolation and hardships both MCs have endured.
Were there some cheesy components? Yes, but I loved them because it felt intentionally campy in way I enjoyed. Were there some word building details I wanted more of? (E.g. Did i miss what the FMC's job was and what happened with it??) Also yes, but I got enough character development in our protagonists that I didn't mind. The conflict did start to feel a bit redundant, but again, I was so focused on our MCs that I wasn't even bothered by it
I'm so happy to have gotten to be an ARC reader for Raven and Lucien's story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 stars, would absolutely read again (and probably will next year come Halloween 🧛♂)
Honestly, a vampire and a human literally on the run from the cops and paranormal hunters? With a snarky female lead? Of course its 4 stars!!
I found the whole thing quite amusing. So were Raven and Lucien. Lucien's total outrage that two bumbling idiots hunting him could best him at all, let alone multiple times, had me chuckling more than once. And Raven's reactions to the world she suddenly found herself in were totally believable. And funny. She had to get a serious backbone and mindset dealing with these paranormals real quick.
They were likable characters with both, over time, changing attitudes and minds about what kind of person each thought the other was, was nice to see.
So, with names to clear, lives to get back to, and a mystery to solve, these two went to work to complete the mission.
Overall, it was cute, light and fun.
