ما تراه هو أربعة نجوم لا ثلاث.
أعلم أنك لا ترى الرابعة لأن نورها انطفىء للأخطاء التاريخية الفجة. أعلم أنها رواية لا كتاب تاريخ و لكن الأخطاء التى تحرف فهمك للتاريخ لا يمكن اغفالها و لعلها ليست أخطاء و انما ما كان سائدا وقت كتابة الرواية.
لنعد لروايتنا العبقرية. تتجلى عبقرية الرواية فى فكرتها قبل كل شىء.
الدين الذى يعتبره أغلب البشر المحرك الأول للتاريخ لم يكن هنا كذلك و لعله لم يكن كذلك أبدا على مر التاريخ.
الدين هنا مصنوعا من البداية للنهاية ككره تتلقفها الأيدى و الأرجل من الكهنة إلى رأس الملكة تى أم اخناتون التى تمررها بينية خطيرة لتستقر فى قدم الساحر اخناتون الذى يحاور بها من منتصف الملعب حتى يجتاز الجميع بمنتهى المهارة محرزا هدف السبق لإلاهه الواحد الأحد. أشعل الهدف المبارة و وتر أعصاب اللاعبين تماما أما الجمهور فيا للعجب لم يكن يعنيه من يفوز بل كان جمهورا ذواقا يشجع اللعبة الحلوة و الأعجب أن الفريقان باستثناء كهنة آمون فى ناحية و اخناتون فى الناحية الأخرى أما باقى اللاعبيين فكانوا يتبادلون الأدوار بين الفريقين حسب الظروف و الأحوال و المصالح و الأهواء و موازيين القوى. فلنعد لأجواء المباراة التى صورها محفوظ بأكثر من خمس عشرة من الكاميرات على غرار المباريات الأوروبية عن طريق اعادة الرواية بعيون مختلفة من زوايا مختلفة لعدد كبير من الأشخاص بلا ملل و كأنها فعلا مباراة أوروبية أو فيلم هوليودى حديث. الكرة تعود الى الكهنة يمررونها سريعا و بمهارة و خبث خلف الخطوط الاخناتونية لقائد جيشه و رجال حاشيته اللذين يبدلون قمصانهم بسرعة محرزين هدف التعادل فى مشهد فاضح يذكرنا بمشهد تكرر كثيرا فى التاريخ الحديث. يشعل الهدف المبارة و يعزز سيطرة الكهنة تماما على الاحداث و لأول مرة تجد مبارة لكرة القدم فريقها الأول به حارس مرمى و عشرون لاعبا و فريقها الأخر عبارة عن لاعب واحد هو كل الفريق. يتعقد المشهد السريالى اكثر بإصابة اخناتون و نزول لاعب فريق الناشئين توت عنخ آمون مكانه فى نفس اللحظة التى يحرز فيها الكهنة هدف الفوز. بجملة غرائب المبارة نجد الملك توت يخلع قميصه بسرعة لنجده يلبس تحته قميص الفريق المنافس و ينطلق نحوهم فيرفعونه عاليا ليحتفل الجميع بالفوز الغالى الذى حققه فريق الكهنة على فريق لم يعد موجودا أو ربما لم يوجد منذ بداية المباراه.
الخطأ التاريخى الأكبر و المؤثر هو ان توت ليس اخو اخناتون بل ابنه و حكم بعد وفاة ابيه او ربما قتله ثم لم يلبث ان قتل و تزوج آى قائد جيشه من أرملته و أصبح هو فرعون مصر.

أأنا أحببتها لأنها تشبه حكايات أبي؟
أم أنها حكاية خاصة لا يمكن إلا أن تأسرك بمتعتها؟
ما أحلى نجيب حين يحكي عن تاريخ مصر الفرعونية
بعد أن قرأت أمام العرش تعجبت من إلمامه بملوك ورؤساء مصر
من أول تاريخ الفراعنة وإلى تاريخنا الحديث
ومحاسن ومساوئ كل منهم
لكن هنا بدا ليّ غوص شديد في التاريخ الفرعوني وتفاصيله
ليست مجرد معرفة عامة بتاريخ الأحوال السياسية وصراعتها
القصة تبدأ بشاب فرعوني يُدعى ماري مون شغوف بالحقيقة ومعرفة التاريخ
يتحدث مع أبيه الحكيم ويطلب منه أن يساعده بنفوذه في رحلة بحثه عن الحقيقة
فينطلق في رحلته للبحث عن الحقيقة
وكما قال؛
لا تحكم في قضية حتى تسمع الطرفين
ذهب لكل الأطراف ولم يترك أحدًا لم يصغي إليه
كانت الأقوال متضاربة، وكل منهم يُفسر الوقائع والأحداث على هواه
لكنه حتمًا سيصل من تجميعها معًا إلى جانب بعضها البعض إلى الحقيقة
لكن يبقى السؤال: عن أي حقيقة يبحث؟
عن حقيقة ذلك الفرعون الذي اختلف فيه الكثيرين
ليس فقط أعداءه ورجاله في عصره
لكن على مختلف العصور
يُقال أنه الفرعون الذي أرسل الله في عهده سيدنا يوسف
بل ويُسهب البعض في وصفه نبي من أنبياء الله
وبعيدًا عما إذا كان هذا يحمل جزءًا من الحقيقة أم لا
هنا الحقيقة كما يرويها عم نجيب
على لسان جميع من شاركوا في تلك الملحمة
من كانوا معه ومن كانوا ضده
من صغره ولد بملامح دميمة قبيحة أنثوية
وبنبوغ وذكاء يسبقان سنه الصغيرة
كان يرى كهنة آمون على أنها روح شريرة تجسدت بداخله
وكان يرى معلمه وطبيبه أن مستقبل هذا الفتى إذا ما اعتلى عرش أجداده سيكون جد مختلف
وبعد وفاة أخيه الأكبر تحتمس، بدأ هذا الذكاء يُترجم إلى أسئلة حول الموت والقدر
هزته الفاجعة، وبدأ في الانعزال بعيدًا، من الليل وحتى تشرق الشمس
بدأ حبه للإله آتون-الشمس- وأصبح ينبذ الإله آمون وكهنته أكثر من زي قبل
حتى تجلى الحق له وسطع النور من داخله، فأيقن أن الإله ليس الشمس
بل هو ما وراء الشمس
هو الإله الواحد
وبدأ يُبشر ويدعو الناس ورجاله إلى الإيمان بالإله الواحد
وتوفي الملك واعتلى العرش
وقام بجولاته التبشيرية، تصحبه الملكة نفرتيتي
وبدأ عصر الرخاء والسعادة الذي لن يدوم طويلاً
بسبب دهاء كهنة آمون ومؤامراتهم في الخفاء
وبسبب سياسته المرنة التي يتبعها في معاقبة المخطيئن والأعداء بالحب والسلام والمودة!!
ربما هو هذا الخطأ الأكبر والأوحد الذي قضى على نزعة التوحيد هذه في مهدها
لم استسغ الفكرة أبدًا، ولم أفهمها
لأنه حتى الدين-أي دين- يحتاج إلى السيف أحيانًا كي يدافع عن وجوده
هكذا تركه جميع رجاله وحتى زوجته نفرتيتي، وعاش في قصره وحيدًا إلى أن مات
يُقال قُتل!
يُقال أبله ومعتوه، ويُقال حكيم وتقي
يُقال نفرتيتي خائنة، ويُقال بلى تركته خلسة كي ينقذ البلاد
يُقال رجاله منافقون وكذابون يبحثون عن السلطة ولا شيء آخر

�This is a story of innocence, of deception, and infinite grief.�
�Akhenaten lived for the truth,� we are told, �and because of the truth he died.� What is truth, however, and how do we determine it when all eye-witness accounts are contradictory, biases and potentially misleading. Is there even a way to know the absolute truth in history? These questions are at the heart of Egyptian author and Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz’s extraordinary Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth that follows a young man on his quest to learn who the former pharaoh, , truly was. Told from an objective narrator interviewing those around the now-deceased king a decade after his reign ended, this is a novel that looks at a singular story from fourteen different vantage points and opinions and asks the reader to make of them as they will. This is a book constructed almost entirely out of nuance and feels akin to ’s in execution as we see the same idea from varied perspectives.This would be a wonderful book for high school courses as it embodies the concept of information discernment and critical analysis of opinions to �see the many facets of truth� and derive an educated guess as to what honestly occured. In an age of information overload, intentional misinformation and media relying heavily on opinion and incendiary headlines in our pay-per-click news cycles, this is a crucial skill to work on. Brief yet infinitely powerful, Mahfouz examines the idea of truth through a historical study of a legacy already ripe with contradictory opinions as either a visionary or heretic in his quest for abolition, rule based on love and peace, anti-war and to make the Egyptian empire monotheistic.
had a life of similar contradictory opinions with the public. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988, he was a revered and prolific author (34 novels, over 350 short stories, 5 plays as well as movie scripts and frequent op-eds in newspapers) who was thrilled at the award not only for himself but to open the doors to Arabic literature being read around the world. His writings were frequently political, often using critiques of religion and public figures in stories steeped in existentialism and socialism. His books were banned in many countries, particularly which led to call for his death. After Mahfouz defended when a fatwa was placed on him, it renewed ire against Mahfouz again leading to him being stabbed in the neck by two failed-assassins in 1994. Mahfouz lived but had nerve damage for the rest of his life which was lived under constant protection from bodyguards. Not a lightweight, Mahfouz is a great example of authors who were not afraid to speak out even declaring �no blasphemy harms Islam and Muslims so much as the call for murdering a writer.�
The story begins with Meriamum entering the dying city erected by Akhamaten during his rule. Once a great capitol it was now �a city droid of life, inert, possessed by silence, shadowed by gloom and the spirit of death,� and also where the dead king’s wife, still lived as �a solitary prisoner sipping bitterness.� With his father’s influence, Meriamum is able to interview those closest to Akhamaten because, like the subject of his research, he too dwells only in truth and lives by the idea spoken to him to �pass no judgement upon a matter until you have heard all testimonies.� Frankly, I love this premise and that the narrator never intrudes, simply allowing the reader to take in all accounts (and ultimately decide for themselves as there is no real ‘conclusion� so to speak, merely the end of the interviews) in this record of opinions that feels akin to librarianship and intellectual freedom.
If you need a brief primer on Akhenaten, the crux of the issue was that he worshiped the sun god, Aten, instead of Amun and after hearing a voice from The One God, dedicated his life in service of this God. He went as far as banning all other deities (including changing his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhanaten as well as erasing all records of his father’s name on the pretext that the name means ‘Amun is Content� though surely his strained relationship with his father is also at play) and attempting to change Egypt from a polytheistic society to a monotheistic one. Naturally, this irked the high priests who conspired against him. �He conceived of a god similar to himself in weakness and femininity, both father and mother,� the High Priest of Amun says, �with no other purpose but love.�
Love is important to Akhanaten’s view of the world, calling for complete abolition of punishment and prisons as well as removing taxes on the poor. It sounds great, right? But the powerful do not like this and set about ensuring it is sabotaged and chaos quickly spreads, Akhanaten detests the old pharaohs who �established [their] greatness on a pyramid of poor people’s corpses,� and wants a land ruled by love and to �be God’s instrument to break the shackles of those who have no power.� When enemies attack the border and military leaders call for troops, he sends them poems about love (okay I was really into that). When asked why he can’t enforce love with military power and punishment he replies that �vicious people and criminals always find an excuse to justify their third for blood.� While some believe �anything is permissible if it will save the country� it is said that he �believed in the means, not the end,� and only used the throne to serve the purpose of his God.Published in 1985 while Egypt was under military rule, Mahfouz is really flexing here and calling out his government.
'Decipher his words, for only they bear the answers to your questions.'
You know right from the start that everything ends in tragedy. is given control by the High Priests and Akhamaten dies of sickness shortly after (or, as his physician suggests, was he poisoned after the High Priests banished him from the city and put their own physician in place?). Nefertiti leaves him right before this happens, which is the great mystery as to why that seems to come up in every testimony, leading us to Nefertiti’s story as the final chapter of the book. Each testimony is the same story but it is fascinatingly well nuanced between each perspective. We see a wide range of opinions, showing Akhamaten as anything from �pure essence of sweetness and benevolence� to a ruler �of questionable birth, effeminate and grotesque� that was �driven by shame and stigma to destroy himself and the country.�
Notably the more (toxically) masculine characters dwell on the former ruler as feminine, some suggesting he was queer or possibly of both genders, and their opinions of Nefertiti tend to resent a woman for having a place of power and assume she was an evil and power hungry using religion as a political tool. The misogyny doubles down into classism as Nefertiti was not of royal birth with one character even asserting that her father, Ay, masterminded the whole thing to obtain the throne through the destruction of Egypt. Each character is biased and something Mahfouz does exceptionally well is have the most toxic characters end up revealing important details unknown until then, so you cannot completely discount their testimonies. Everyone has something to offer, everyone is biased in some way for a whole slew of reasons, everyone is unreliable yet through this mire of biases we must quest for truth.
Truth is shown to be quite ambiguous, just as much as any handle on who Akhamaten was is cloaked in nuanced mystery. While he is universally described as having unique and often a �repulsive appearance�, there is much duality to him such as being said to be both or �neither man nor woman�, an ambiguity in keeping with testimonies of his mental state as �he was neither mad nor sane like the rest of us. He was something in between.� Questions of the validity of hearing the One God come up frequently, with characters saying as a man devoted to truth he never lied yet still disbelieving his account of the voice. What is particularly key here is that in a religion focused on icon and temples and other physical aspects, the One God appeared to him only as a voice with no form which is a radical departure from their belief systems. Mahfouz plays with progressive politics as much as he does the disconnect between tradition and modernism in religious beliefs.
�He was a visionary promising a paradise irreconcilable with human nature. He confronted people with their mediocrity and provoked their deepest fears.�
There is a highly Christian aspect to this novel too, with Akhamaten often feeling very Christ-like. His words often parallel those of Jesus, such as asking God why He �has forsaken me�, his beliefs feel very much like those of Jesus and his death comes due to his threat to empire and High Priests. All of this feels very pointed in a 1985 novel as Mahfouz openly criticized Islamic extremism in the press, and Akhamaten often feels like a kindred spirit for the author (which, then, if we decide this, how objective of an interpretation to the many stories can we have and is this an authorial intent fallacy?)
Akhanaten: Dweller in Truth is a fabulous little novel. Clocking in at 168pgs this is easily read in a day but will dwell in your mind for many weeks to come. I finished it in one sitting I simply could not put it down. While the different voices could be a bit more distinguishable from one another, it does not detract and the cacophony of opinions makes for a really exciting way to address a single story. This is an excellent look at critical analysis of text and the ways we must decode history through contradictory information as well as a fascinating look into Egyptian history meant to resonate in the modern world. Highly recommended.

had a life of similar contradictory opinions with the public. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988, he was a revered and prolific author (34 novels, over 350 short stories, 5 plays as well as movie scripts and frequent op-eds in newspapers) who was thrilled at the award not only for himself but to open the doors to Arabic literature being read around the world. His writings were frequently political, often using critiques of religion and public figures in stories steeped in existentialism and socialism. His books were banned in many countries, particularly which led to call for his death. After Mahfouz defended when a fatwa was placed on him, it renewed ire against Mahfouz again leading to him being stabbed in the neck by two failed-assassins in 1994. Mahfouz lived but had nerve damage for the rest of his life which was lived under constant protection from bodyguards. Not a lightweight, Mahfouz is a great example of authors who were not afraid to speak out even declaring �no blasphemy harms Islam and Muslims so much as the call for murdering a writer.�
The story begins with Meriamum entering the dying city erected by Akhamaten during his rule. Once a great capitol it was now �a city droid of life, inert, possessed by silence, shadowed by gloom and the spirit of death,� and also where the dead king’s wife, still lived as �a solitary prisoner sipping bitterness.� With his father’s influence, Meriamum is able to interview those closest to Akhamaten because, like the subject of his research, he too dwells only in truth and lives by the idea spoken to him to �pass no judgement upon a matter until you have heard all testimonies.� Frankly, I love this premise and that the narrator never intrudes, simply allowing the reader to take in all accounts (and ultimately decide for themselves as there is no real ‘conclusion� so to speak, merely the end of the interviews) in this record of opinions that feels akin to librarianship and intellectual freedom.
�I was happy to bid indolence farewell, and to set off along the path of history in search of truth, a path that has no beginning and no end, for it will always be extended by those who have a passion for eternal truth.�
If you need a brief primer on Akhenaten, the crux of the issue was that he worshiped the sun god, Aten, instead of Amun and after hearing a voice from The One God, dedicated his life in service of this God. He went as far as banning all other deities (including changing his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhanaten as well as erasing all records of his father’s name on the pretext that the name means ‘Amun is Content� though surely his strained relationship with his father is also at play) and attempting to change Egypt from a polytheistic society to a monotheistic one. Naturally, this irked the high priests who conspired against him. �He conceived of a god similar to himself in weakness and femininity, both father and mother,� the High Priest of Amun says, �with no other purpose but love.�
Love is important to Akhanaten’s view of the world, calling for complete abolition of punishment and prisons as well as removing taxes on the poor. It sounds great, right? But the powerful do not like this and set about ensuring it is sabotaged and chaos quickly spreads, Akhanaten detests the old pharaohs who �established [their] greatness on a pyramid of poor people’s corpses,� and wants a land ruled by love and to �be God’s instrument to break the shackles of those who have no power.� When enemies attack the border and military leaders call for troops, he sends them poems about love (okay I was really into that). When asked why he can’t enforce love with military power and punishment he replies that �vicious people and criminals always find an excuse to justify their third for blood.� While some believe �anything is permissible if it will save the country� it is said that he �believed in the means, not the end,� and only used the throne to serve the purpose of his God.Published in 1985 while Egypt was under military rule, Mahfouz is really flexing here and calling out his government.
'Decipher his words, for only they bear the answers to your questions.'
You know right from the start that everything ends in tragedy. is given control by the High Priests and Akhamaten dies of sickness shortly after (or, as his physician suggests, was he poisoned after the High Priests banished him from the city and put their own physician in place?). Nefertiti leaves him right before this happens, which is the great mystery as to why that seems to come up in every testimony, leading us to Nefertiti’s story as the final chapter of the book. Each testimony is the same story but it is fascinatingly well nuanced between each perspective. We see a wide range of opinions, showing Akhamaten as anything from �pure essence of sweetness and benevolence� to a ruler �of questionable birth, effeminate and grotesque� that was �driven by shame and stigma to destroy himself and the country.�
Notably the more (toxically) masculine characters dwell on the former ruler as feminine, some suggesting he was queer or possibly of both genders, and their opinions of Nefertiti tend to resent a woman for having a place of power and assume she was an evil and power hungry using religion as a political tool. The misogyny doubles down into classism as Nefertiti was not of royal birth with one character even asserting that her father, Ay, masterminded the whole thing to obtain the throne through the destruction of Egypt. Each character is biased and something Mahfouz does exceptionally well is have the most toxic characters end up revealing important details unknown until then, so you cannot completely discount their testimonies. Everyone has something to offer, everyone is biased in some way for a whole slew of reasons, everyone is unreliable yet through this mire of biases we must quest for truth.
Truth is shown to be quite ambiguous, just as much as any handle on who Akhamaten was is cloaked in nuanced mystery. While he is universally described as having unique and often a �repulsive appearance�, there is much duality to him such as being said to be both or �neither man nor woman�, an ambiguity in keeping with testimonies of his mental state as �he was neither mad nor sane like the rest of us. He was something in between.� Questions of the validity of hearing the One God come up frequently, with characters saying as a man devoted to truth he never lied yet still disbelieving his account of the voice. What is particularly key here is that in a religion focused on icon and temples and other physical aspects, the One God appeared to him only as a voice with no form which is a radical departure from their belief systems. Mahfouz plays with progressive politics as much as he does the disconnect between tradition and modernism in religious beliefs.
�He was a visionary promising a paradise irreconcilable with human nature. He confronted people with their mediocrity and provoked their deepest fears.�
There is a highly Christian aspect to this novel too, with Akhamaten often feeling very Christ-like. His words often parallel those of Jesus, such as asking God why He �has forsaken me�, his beliefs feel very much like those of Jesus and his death comes due to his threat to empire and High Priests. All of this feels very pointed in a 1985 novel as Mahfouz openly criticized Islamic extremism in the press, and Akhamaten often feels like a kindred spirit for the author (which, then, if we decide this, how objective of an interpretation to the many stories can we have and is this an authorial intent fallacy?)
Akhanaten: Dweller in Truth is a fabulous little novel. Clocking in at 168pgs this is easily read in a day but will dwell in your mind for many weeks to come. I finished it in one sitting I simply could not put it down. While the different voices could be a bit more distinguishable from one another, it does not detract and the cacophony of opinions makes for a really exciting way to address a single story. This is an excellent look at critical analysis of text and the ways we must decode history through contradictory information as well as a fascinating look into Egyptian history meant to resonate in the modern world. Highly recommended.

"لا كرامة لعرش يقوم على الكذب والفجور."
عرفت للمرة الأولى الفرعون، أخناتون، في مسلسل النبي يوسف بن يعقوب، وهو ابن الفرعون أمنحوتب الثالث وحفيد تحتمس أشهر فراعنة مصر، وأمه الملكة تي، وبناءً على أحداث المسلسل، هو الفرعون الذي رأى رؤية السبع بقرات والسبع سنبلات التي أوّلها النبي يوسف، وهو الذي ولّاه على خزائن طيبة وخيراتها وأعلن عن عبادته للآله الواحد، أتون، المتمثّل بالشمس، وسقوط باقي الآلهة وعلى رأسها أمون.. وهو زوج الملكة الشهيرة نفرتيتي.. لكن المسلسل لم يتطرّق لتفصيل شخصية هذا الفرعون العجيب والمثير للجدل..
لكن نجيب محفوظ بعبقريته المتفردة سافر بنا إلى ذلك العصر، عصر أخاتون، الملك المارق كما يقول عنه أتباع أمون، وتصوير هذا الملك الضعيف جسداً الغني الجذّاب روحاً، الذي ثار على تقاليد مُلك آبائه وأجداده وكهنة طيبة، في سبيل إيمانه العميق المترسّخ بالإله الواحد الذي لا شريك له.. حاول بكل ما أوتي من سلطان وإيمان أن يقيم دولة الحق والعدل والتوحيد ويظهر الحقيقة التي يعيشها للجميع وأن يهدم أركان عبادة الشرك والفجور والكذب.. أن يقيم دولة الحب والخير، فلم يسفك قطرة دم واحدة في سبيل تشييد هذه الدولة.. ولكن يا أخناتون، هل في عالم البشر يمكن أن تقام دولة على الحب المخلص النقي؟ أم أن العروش والسلاطين لا ترتفع إلّا بالظلم والجور والخداع؟!
لأول مرة اقرأ رواية تاريخية لنجيب محفوظ، وقد أبهرني كعادته بأسلوبه المفريد المميّز في سرد وقائع حكايات تاريخية من زمن الفراعنة.. والرواية مبنية على شهادات من كانوا قريبين من أخناتون وعاصروه طفلاً وملكاً ومنهم زوجته نفرتيتي..
مع نجيب محفوظ تشعر وكأنك جزء من رواياته، وتكاد فعلاً تلمس شخصياته بيدك، وتحس أنها حقيقية جداً، وتكاد تتكلم معها وتناقشها، وهنا يتجلّى أحد أوجه إبداعاته، ولا أنسى اللغة الرصينة والحوار العميق والوصف الذي حقاً يفوق الوصف.
رواية تاريخية فلسفية مذهلة جداً، تستحق النجوم الخمسة بكل جدارة.

العائش في الحقيقة؟ في اعتقادك ما هي الحقيقة ؟ وهل الحقيقة يمكن أن يتم العثور عليها دون شك ،أي حقيقة مطلقة؟!
نجيب محفوظ يكتب هنا باسلوب تاريخي في البحث والتقصي عن شخصية تاريخية فرعونية صاحب الإثارة والجدل الملك امنحوتب الرابع الذي غير اسمه ل "اختاتون"
هذا الرجل تزوج من نفرتيتي الغريب أن بعد مشاهدتي للأفلام الوثائقية وجدت أن حتى الآن لم يستطيعوا العثور على قبر نيفرتيتي وكأن أحدهم تعمدوا اخفاء قبرها بل وحاولوا طمس سيرة اخناتون ونيفرتيتي من التاريخ ولكن كل ما وصل عنهم يحتمل الصدق والكذب لا ندري .
نجيب محفوظ بأسلوب سلس يتتبع حياة اخناتون الذي هو لا بذكر ولا بأنثى جسده هزيل ضعيف ، وثورته الدينية التي قام بها في البلاد بعدما الغى عبادة آلهه متعددة ووحد الديانة وجعلها للإله الواحد وهو آتون أي قرص الشمس ،ووصفه الشعب" بالمارق"أي الخارج عن الدين وحاولوا اغتياله ولكننا لا نعلم هل قُتل اختاتون أم مات بشكل طبيعي؟ لا ندري ، ولا ندرى كيف يكون إله اختاتون ؟ هل هو الله الإله الواحد الصمد ؟ أم إله في شكل وثني!؟ ولكن ايًا يكن إلهه ولكني تعاطفت مع اخناتون وتعجبت منه في ذلك الوقت كيف لم يستخدم السلاح ويحارب من أجل هذه الثورة الدينية ؟ مع العلم ان الدين في مصر الفرعونية ركيزة أساسية في البلاد ينشأ بسببها الخلافات؟ هل كان ذلك بسبب انه يريد السلام ويثق في إلهه أنه لن يخذله ؟ أم بسبب ضعف شخصيته ؟
أسلوب محفوظ سلس في الرواية كما أن الرواية تدور على ألسن المقربين من اختاتون مثل وزيره ومعلمه وقائد جيشه وطبيبه وفي النهاية تحدثت زوجته نفرتيتي ، كل منهم يحكي الحقيقة من وجهه نظره ، من رأيهم الشخصي والذي يريد معرفة الحقيقية هو ولد ُيدعى ماري مون وهو شغوف بالحقيقة وذهب في رحلة لأخذ الحقيقة من هؤلاء الأشخاص .
الرواية بها خطأ تاريخي لا أعرف كيف فات نجيب محفوظ وهو وجود توت عنخ آمون على أنه اخ ل اختاتون والحقيقة ان اخناتون أنجب توت عنخ آمون انه ابنه !!
كنت سأعطي الرواية ٣ نجوم ولكن نظراً لأن هذا العمل جعلني أبحث بدقة أكثر عن اخناتون وحكمه لعلي أعرف الحقيقة أنا ايضًا ولذلك رفعت التقييم لأربع نجوم ❤️

Let’s go back to the time of the Pharaohs. Incongruously, the main character is kind of what we would call an investigative journalist; a young man who simply wants to interview all those around the recently deceased pharaoh, Akhenaten, to find out about him and the scandals surrounding his reign. He is able to do this because his father is a well-connected high official in the Egyptian bureaucracy and the father gives his son a letter of introduction to all these folks. The young man interviews Akhenaten’s mother, tutor, family doctor, army leader, religious leader, bodyguard, and so on, culminating with the late Pharaoh’s wife Nefertiti.
A bit of Egyptian history: Akhenaten was born Amenhotep IV, husband of Nefertiti and father of Tutankhamen. Akhenaten was regarded as an aberration among the Pharaohs. He was slight of build, effeminate, almost androgynous; a flower child who was uninterested in war and believed love could conquer all. He married a commoner, Nefertiti, the daughter of his tutor. What really got him in trouble, was that he was an early believer in what might be called monotheism. Before him, Egyptians believed in multiple gods for different features of nature and for different cities and regions of the country. Akhenaten believed in a single superior god, the sun-god, Aten (thus his name change). It was not quite monotheism because he still believed in multiple lesser gods.
The scandals that developed were easy to see coming. The priests were almost as powerful as the Pharaoh and they did not want their power and sources of income messed with. The military thought him a weakling who let Egypt’s enemies encroach on its borders without opposition. After Akhenaten’s early death (which may have been murder) official Egyptian records referred to him as “the criminal� or “the enemy.� Religious practices gradually returned to what they were and Akhenaten’s name was chiseled out of monuments and temples to his god were destroyed. The young man doing the interviewing finds opinions and feelings running the gamut from those who loved Akhenaten to those who hated him. A lot of the focus of the interviewer’s questioning is on whether or not the informant truly converted to belief in the one god or just went along simply to hold on to their positions.
The book is certainly is a novel approach to what could be called not a historical novel, but historical fiction. The author, Mahfouz is regarded as the classic man of Egyptian letters and the one who brought the modern novel to Egyptian readers. Most of his novels are about modern Egypt and he is best known for his Cairo Trilogy. (I also reviewed his novel, Respected Sir my link text)

إخناتون، صاحب ما يعرف " بالثورة الدينية" و أقدم دعوة للتوحيد قام بتغيير العباده من الاله امون لـ”اتون� الذي يرمز له بقرص الشمس.
تدور الاحداث حول شاب فرعوني في مقتبل العمر يريد معرفة الحقيقة الكاملة حول الملك الفرعوني اخناتون الذي حكم مصر في الفترة السابقة، فيذهب لمقابلة الشخصيات التي عاصرت الملك ليسردوا له احداث القصة، كلٍ منهم بطريقته و من وجهة نظره.

Der ägyptische Nobelpreisträger Machfus ist eher bekannt für zeitgenössische nordafrikanische Literatur. Echnaton ist dagegen eher ein historischer Roman über einen der außergewöhnlichsten Pharaos. Er war ein Revolutionär, ein Freigeist, der Liebe und der Kunst zugetan, aber auch ein Zerstörer der Zeugnisse der Vergangenheit, ein Gegner seiner Vorgänger, die ein anderen Gottesbild hatten, kleingewachsen mit weibischen Zügen und der schönsten Ehefrau, die es zu dieser Zeit gab: Nofretete. Er baute sich seine eigene Herrschaftsstadt nördlich von Theben und brachte aufgrund seines Pazifismus Ägypten beinahe den Untergang.
Das ist schon eine außergewöhnliche Vita. Machfus lässt sie durch investigativen Journalismus aufarbeiten, denn ein junger Ich-Erzähler erhält wenige Jahre nach dem Tod Echnatons die Möglichkeit, sich mit den Weggefährten und Gegnern zu unterhalten. Besser gesagt, er gibt ihnen in den jeweiligen nach ihnen benannten Kapiteln die Möglichkeit, in ausgedehnten Monologen ihre Erlebnisse mit Echnaton zu erzählen. Was in den ersten Kapiteln erfrischend ungewöhnlich für die Zeit klingt und das Bild Echnatons wie ein Puzzle zusammen setzen lässt, begann ab der Mitte des Buchs mich zu langweilen, denn ob Gärtner, Polizeichef, Schwägerin oder Heeresführer, es kommen keine nennenswerten Erkenntnisse hinzu. Man liebte oder hasste ihn. Und so erwartet man sehnsüchtig das letzte Kapitel, in dem seine Frau Nofretete das Wort hat. Sie muss doch die Wahrheit bezüglich der widersprüchlichen Aussagen kennen. Doch leider ist ihre von Liebe geprägt Sicht auf den Mann, der mit Aton einen neuen Gott an oberster Stelle im Reich setzte, auch nur ein subjektiver Blick auf das Geschehen.
Angetan von der Idee und enttäuschend von am Ende geringer werdenden Leseerlebnis lässt mich das Buch irgendwie lauwarm zurück. Ich habe es aber trotzdem nicht bereut, aus dem öffentlichen Bücherschrank genommen zu haben.

العبقرية حينما تتجسد فى رواية , من أين لك هذا يانجيب ؟ مع كل روايه تقرأها تجد شىء جديد ومختلف ,قادر على ابهارك دائما
رواية تاريخية فرعونية رائعة جدا , تتناول حياة إخناتون وزوجته نفرتيتى منذ ولاده كل منهما وحتى مماته ,وتركز اكثر على إخناتون وفلسفته الدينيه وتمرده
على ألهه أجداده مواجها كهنة أمون بعبادته لرب واحد خالق كل الكون ..وعملا بأمر الهه قام إخناتون بنشر دعوته فى كافة ربوع الامبراطورية
أكثر شىء عجبنى وصف نجيب محفوظ لكل شخوص الرواية بطريقة تجعل الشخص الموصوف وكانه واقف امامك ..وايضا وصف اخناتون على لسان
المحبين له والكارهين فمنهم من رأه فذا منذ صباه كانما ولد بعقل كاهن , ودليل ذلك انه كان يناقش أستاذه مناقشه الند للند ,ولكنه كان ضعيف الجسم ويكرهه العنف مولع بالازهار والحدائق
اما أعداؤه من كهنه أمون فاتهموه بانه ليس رجل وليس امرأه ,وانه لا يستحق بان يكون فرعون مصرو لا يصلح الا ان يكون فتاه مهذبه ليس الا او شاعر يردد الاناشيد

On the Nile at full seasonal flood, the narrator, Meriamun, and his father drift past the abandoned city of Akhetaten, Pharoah Akhenaten's once beautiful capital, which he had created after abandoning Thebes. The son asks the father, who is connected at court, to write letters of reference for him so that he might interview those who were involved with the "heretic" king. Mahfouz is admirably swift in establishing the core conflict. Amun is the main God of Egypt, but after Akhenaten's beloved brother dies in the face of Amun's perceived indifference Akhenaten turns to Aten, the sun god. He becomes a zealous monotheist among politically connected polytheists. Not only that, but he prohibits religious pluralism and disperses the priesthoods and assets of the old gods. Now all of Amun's very powerful priests are out on their ears and they are not pleased. When Akhenaten's father dies he ascends to Pharoah and all his new ministers are more than happy to swear alliegiance to Aten. When reports arrive that enemies are attacking the borders, and corruption is overtaking his officials, the new king discounts the news by saying that his "love" has yet to have its effect. "Soon you will see the tree of love heavy with fruit," he says. There is an intimation of homosexuality, perhaps none more stark than that last phrase, but it's beside the point. Akhenaten is a kind of a second millenium BC prophet, in contact with his one god, while all around him the people high and low indulge their polytheistic beliefs. His message of victorious love seems like something from the Summer of Love. It's at such moments that one wonders how close Mahfouz hews to the archaeological record. Multiple first-person narrators tell the story of the "heretic" king. Some love him, some hate him, but all are in one way or another biased. It is the reader's job to sort out the real Akhenaten from all this passionate distortion. This book dipped down and restored me when I felt empty. It floated past, a tacit invitation to climb aboard. The subject is both ancient and timeless. A pharaoh catches the bug of a new religion and insists everyone join him. Everyone from the generals and the priests on down bristle; most find that the man, the titular Akhenaten, has lost it. They also blame his queen Nefertiti.
Rumor runs amok.
Incest.
Treason.
Heresy.

هناك من يسمونه المارق وهناك من يسمونه العائش في الحقيقة لكن لا احد من هؤلاء يمكنه انكار نضوج عقله وروحه المبكر بالنسبة لجسده الهزيل شبه الأنثوي...
اخناتون من اكثر ملوك مصر القديمة اثارة للجدل في التاريخ...
فمن هذا الذي ادعى انه وجد روح إله واحد في خلوته الروحانية وتحدث اليه، من الذي انقلب على الدين ورجاله وهو يعلم انهم اساس الحكم هم من يحركون مشاعر الشعب ويرتقون بملكهم أو يخسفونه...
الرواية تبدأ برحلة مري مون للبحث عن حقيقة اخناتون ونفرتيتي والدين الجديد، يتحدث مع كل شخص من المحيطين بالملك الراحل من مواليه الى اعدائه من طيبة الى أطلال اخيتاتون، ينبش عن ذكريات هؤلاء ووجهات نظرهم في شخصه ليسجل الحقيقة فقط ولا غيرها...
مالم يعجبني في الرواية هو التكرار الكثير فهي مقسمة الى احاديث بين الأشخاص المحيطون، فالأعداء لهم نفس الرأي والمريدين لهم نفس الرأي ولكن تختلف بضع وجهات نظر من شخصية لأخرى لكن الحكاية تبقى مكررة كل مرة...

Mahfouz’s Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth is a wonderful use of historical fiction by a masterful author to bring to life the brief reign of Akhenaten in ancient Egypt. I recall learning of Akhenaten when I was young; he was the “sun king� who believed in one god, unlike his contemporaries. But that was all I knew.
This novel is structured as a journey by a young man, years after Akhenaten’s death, to learn from that king’s contemporaries just what the pharaoh and his rule was like, what happened to alienate him from the priests, what led to his downfall and the end of his reign. To do this, Meriamun talked with friends, family, enemies of Akhenaten, with past members of his government. In all, he interviews fourteen men and women, including the former queen, Nefertiti.
The essence of the interviews is the varying pictures they reveal of Akhenaten, and of subjects themselves with their possible motives, in the past and the present. It’s interesting to read the shifts in view of Akhenaten from deformed, effeminate, unnatural heretic to loving, prayerful, enlightened king trying to lead people to his god. While I know this is fiction, I enjoyed the multiple views that allow some form to take shape (realizing that the true person is unknowable).
While reading, I was often struck by contemporary parallels as we often try to analyze public figures through multiple testimonies. And I think of Mahfouz doing the same since he wrote of many political, cultural, philosophical, and religious movements in novels such as the Cairo Trilogy.

It brought ancient history alive for me. Beyond that, I think it adds to the old adage ... those who do not know history will be condemned to repeat it (or words to that effect).

هكذا النوع الأول من البشر؛ وهو الأغلب الأعم، منذ بداية الخليقة إلى الآن: يميل لدين آباءه، يقدسه، ويتعصب لأجله، ويدافع عنه بكل ما أوتي من قوة؛ يراه حقيقة مطلقة، ثابتة، لا ريب فيها، فقط لأنه فُطر عليه، لا اكثر ولا أقل، وقد يملى عليه مئات الإجابات لسؤال: "لماذا اخترنا هذا الدين؟"؛ فينسى أنه لم يكن لديه اختيار من الأساس! لأنه ببساطة؛ ليس لديه أي معرفة بأي دين آخر! هو فقط يعلم أنه يؤمن بالإختيار الصحيح، ومن ثم فإن الآخرين جميعا، في ضلال هداهم الله! أما النوع الثاني: فهو تلك القلة النادرة من هؤلاء الباحثين عن الحقيقة؛ يراهم النوع الأول جاهلون، غافلون، يسخرون منهم، يرثون لحالهم، ينبذونهم، ويعزبونهم، ويصفونهم بالجنون... أما الأول فقد يربكه سؤالا في كتاب هنا، أو على لسان مشكك هناك؛ أما ذاك العائش في الحقيقة، فلا شيء ولا أحد يستطيع أن يحيده عن صراطه المستقيم. فسلام على أرواحهم جميعا، وسلام لروحك يا إخناتون.

Miri-Mon se encontraba en un viaje por el Nilo con su padre, cuando vio una ciudad magnifica a lo lejos y quizo saber cual era su nombre y porque estaba vacía. Su padre le conto la historia del Rey Hereje, y desde ese momento Miri-Mon decidió que tenia que conocer la historia completa, si es posible contada por sus propios protagonistas, ya que muchos todavía se encontraban con vida. De esa forma llego a entrevistar a mas de 10 personas que, en vida, tuvieron conocimientos de primera mano de la vida y muerte del que fue llamado el Rey Hereje, el Rey Akhenaton y su Reina Nefertiti.
Comence este libro sin muchas ilusiones, porque no soy muy fan de la ficción-historica, pero el autor es un ganador de Premio Nobel, así que sabia que por lo menos seria una historia bien escrita y atrapante. Pero no me esperaba para nada la forma como el autor logro que entendiera, aceptara y hasta compadeciera a los protas de la historia (los Reyes Akhenaton y Nefertiti). Pero también entendiera y aceptara el punto de vista del resto de los personajes, quienes nos contaron sus esperanzas y temores sobre un reinado de un hombre que a muchos le parecia "abominable" por su aspecto femenino y delgado en una cultura donde los hombres debían ser fuertes y poderosos.
En fin, fue una excelente lectura, muy bien llevada que te deja con la curiosidad de saber la verdadera historia de este Rey y el porque su caída, de leer otras cosas del autor.

مثلما أبدع باكثير في كتابة روايات تعبر عن فترات في التاريخ الاسلامي ، أبدع نجيب محفوظ في الكتابة عن فترات في تاريخ مصر القديم
تتناول هذه الرواية فترة أخناتون والدعوة إلي الديانة التوحيدية عن طريق باحث للحقيقة يحاول أن ينقل شهادات من عاصروا هذه الفترة وكانوا بجوار العرش ، ولقد نجح في نقل الشهادات كما هي حتي أن القارئ قد يصاب بالارتباك ويتساءل ما هي حقيقة هذا الملك الغامض !؟
ومن أكثر الأشياء التي أعجبتني في الرواية نجاح نجيب محفوظ إلي حد كبير في الوصف الجسدي لاخناتون
يليها تصارع الكهنة وما هي الخطط والحيل التي قد يستخدمونها لتحقيق واستمرار نظامهم أو تطوير سيطرتهم علي الحكم من خلال ملك طفل يرث العرش
ملاحظة جانبية الروايات التاريخية لا يشترط صحتها بل يمكن أن تبني علي بداية ونهاية صحيحة لكن الأحداث مختلقة لإبراز الصراع الدائر بين الشخصيات أو إسقاط رموز سياسية ودينية وهنا الصراع ما بين النظام الجديد المتمثل في أخناتون ودعوته إلي الحب والتوحيد مع كلا من الكهنة والعسكر
وإن كان يظهروا إنهم متفقين ضد الدين الجديد ، الدين الثوري الذي سيحل الحب والرخاء في المجتمع
إلا أنهم ينظرون إلي ما بعد ذلك ومن الذي سيتحكم في الحكم من وراء الستار ،ألا يذكركم هذا بشئ يحدث الآن علي أرض الواقع !؟
الرواية تتأرجح ما بين الثلاثة والأربع نجوم ، وحتي يأتوا بنصف نجمة سأظل اقرب لأكبر طبعا مادام عم نجيب هو الكاتب

A young man wishes to find out the truth about Akhenaten, the monotheistic pharaoh, whose new faith in the god Aten, did not outlast him nor did the beautiful city he had built in the god's honor. With a letter of introduction to various erstwhile members of the court, the narrator gets a more complete picture of Akhenaten. Each person whom he interviews and tells their impressions of the man, has a different opinion about the man and various facets of his life. Some, such as Ay, the counsellor, and the Aten high priest have nothing but good to say. Others, although they had given lip service to that religion, denigrated him after his death, calling him insane. Each has a different theory on why his wife, the beautiful Nefertiti, left him. Some felt he had died of natural causes and others, that he had been murdered. Sort of a Rashomon-type story set in ancient Egypt.

من أجمل ما قرأت لمحفوظ، ويكشف العمل على أن الروائي القدير رحمه لو كان قد أنجز مشروعه عن مصر الفرعونية لأتحفنا بالكثير من الروائع، للصديق العزيز محمد مكرم تحفظ على خطأ تاريخي رئيسي في العمل خاص بصلة توت عنخ ىمون بإخناتون وكيف أنه ابن له وليس أخ.. وهذا إن صح يعد خطأ مستغربا وفادحا من قبل الروائي المطلع، ولا أقر بصحة أو خطأ المعلومة فأنا لا علم لي بها، وإنما استرعت انتباهي فأحببت ذكرها، وعلى كل فالعمل بعيدا عن هذه الملاحظة أمتعني وقضيت بصحبته وقتا طيبا بعد عناء أيام من العمل الشاق الذي لا ينقضي أبدا.

نجيب محفوظ يتحفنا بواحدة من روائعة عن حياة أخناتون
هذا الرجل هل كان فعلا نبى مرسل من الله ام كان مخبول ام واقع تحت تأثير أمة وزوجتة
ستعيش فى هذة الرواية جميع القصص والاحتمالات التى وردت فى التاريخ عن طريق اسلوب تعدد الرواة
العبقرى الذى حكي قصة اخناتون كل من وجهة نظرة
فتسمع الحكاية من الكاهن الاكبر لأتون وحور محب وحتي زوجتة نفرتيتي ومن عبقرية محفوظ انة يتركك فى النهاية
فى حيرة من أمرك فلا تدرى اين الحقيقة
خاصة أن موضوع اخناتون لم تتوصل لحقيقتة كتب التاريخ حتى الان فتوجد بعض النظريات والاراء بأنة
قد يكون نبي فعلا من عند الله وقد قرأت رأى مشابهة للدكتور مصطفى محمود عن هذا ا��موضوع
نجيب محفوظ ابدع من الناحية اللغوية فتشعر ان كل سطر قد كتب بعناية فائقة

Akhenaten’s portrait is revealed through a series of interviews conducted by Meriamun, the son of a high official in the Egyptian court. Armed with a letter of introduction from his father, Meriamun seeks individuals who knew Akhenaten to learn the truth about this mysterious pharaoh who was dubbed “the heretic pharaoh� by some and a wise and gentle pharaoh by others. Among those Meriamun interviews are a high priest of the established religion, Akhenaten’s mother, his in-laws, friends, physician, military leader, and body guard. This is a quick and easy read with an interesting structure. It illustrates how prejudices and predilections can impact perceptions. Two individuals can view the same event or interact with the same individual and arrive at entirely different interpretations. Truth is never easy to ascertain. The novel also illustrates how an individual or a movement that dares to defy established norms is castigated by some of its contemporaries and loved by others.
Recommended, especially for those interested in historical fiction about ancient Egypt.

Armed with a letter of introduction from his father, Meriamun seeks individuals who knew Akhenaten to learn the truth about this mysterious pharaoh who was dubbed “the heretic pharaoh� by some and a wise and gentle pharaoh by others. Among those Meriamun interviews are a high priest of the established religion, Akhenaten’s mother, his in-laws, friends, physician, military leader, and body guard. He concludes his investigation by traveling to Akhenaten’s now deteriorating city and interviewing his wife, Nefertiti, a virtual prisoner in the palace.

هذه هي النصيحة التي وُجهت، وأتقنها الباحث عن الحقيقة راوي الرواية، حتى ليجعلك تتيّقن أن كل يتحدّث على هواه ولابد للحقيقة أن تغيب، ولا يعيش بها سوى من عاشوا في الأزمان الغابرة.

رواية تدرك من قراءتها مدي قدرة الكاتب علي ارجاعك الي التاريخ وجعلك تعيش قصة اخناتون ونفرتيتي بلغة رائعة واسلوب مشوق رائع , الحقيقة ان الرواية تضع امامك العديد من الحقائق حول اخناتون ونفرتيتي ورجال الحكم في هذه الفترة واعطائك الحكم للحكم علي شحصية كل منهم بوضوح , فستجد ان من قرا الرواية سيقيم ابطالها علي حسب افكاره ورؤيته .... من روائع نجيب محفوظ __ بعد قراءتي للرواية باسابيع قليلة ذهبت لزيارة المتحف المصري ورأيت تماثيل كليوباترا واحناتون والملكة تي وشعرت واني ارعفهم معرفة شخصية او اعرفهم عن قرب لدرجة انني وقفت اشرح لعدد من الزائرين قصة اخناتون ونفرتيتي وكهنة امون ووقفت امام التمثيل بالتحديد الذي يظهر اخناتون بصورة قبيحة وشرحت لهم انه ربما كهنة امون هم من ارادوا تصوير اخناتون علي انه بهذا الشكل كنوع من التشويه له , اشعر انه حتي ايام الفراعنة كان هناك اعلام فاسد

رواية جيدة ، نجيب محفوظ يختصر فلسفة التاريخ في ألا شيء مطلق ؛ الفعل واحد والحدث واحد وتتعدد التفسيرات بتعدد الرواة فيروي كلا منهم ما حدث تبعا لتوجهاته .
هذه الرواية جمعت بين هوسين لنجيب ، هوسه بمصر الفرعونية وهوسه بفلسفة البحث عن الإله فجاء ذلك في الشخصية المثيرة للجدل " إخناتون"التي ينسب إليها أول توحيد بمصر القديمة ، ربما ليست أفضل ما كتب نجيب محفوظ ، لكنها قريبة إلى .
