Why we're reading this
Very well received. I learned how some african american thought New York as the place to be when they learned some people were earning as mich as $10 only to learn living in New York often "absord" all their wages. It was interesting to learn Joe Louis owned the Cotton Club before the gansters purchased the club.

Why we're reading this
Fales-Hill writes about her late mother's life- Josephine Premice, and african american actress, singer, and dancer. Premice sacified her career when she married and had a family. She attempted to re-start her career after her children were grown. Her daughter was hired as a writer for the Crosby Show and later "A Different World." She describes how hard it was to get executives to want to have a show depiciting a successful African American loving supprotive family on network television. Fales was able to create an episode with her mother depiciting a jazz singer, and later wrote parts for her "aunt" Diane Carrol as Whintley Giblert's mother on "A Different World." Fales Hill discussed her childhood and the strong influence her mother had in her life, and how fortunate she was that her mother showed her the "world was her oyster -- get up and live."

My son (22 months) LOVES this book. It is the first book he brought to me to read over & over & over again. We used the pictures to teach things like "fence," "house," "stick," and "rope," among others. A great choice for children who love dogs.

I love how it's told from three different point of views, to help the reader understand all the perspectives of living in Mississippi in the 1960's. There's no superbly happy ending and it's a reminder that life itself doesn't always have a happily ever after. It's a very inspiring book.

Why we're reading this
I always enjoy American History, but more than that I love reading about adventure, and this certainly is a big one. Honestly I'm surprised at how little I really knew about the Lewis and Clark expedition, so I'm glad I decided to check this out despite its audacious length (It's basically my "all summer long" reading). It's a little slow in spots because I think the author is afraid to leave out any detail, but the story is interesting enough to hold my attention even through the boring parts.
