What happens if Red Riding Hood fails to heed her mother’s warning and follows the wolf into the forest? In the kingdom of Gévaudan, the woods are full of forestborn, merciless immortal creatures who hunt humans, and once Rachelle steps off the path, she is marked as belonging to them and must kill or die. Wracked by guilt, she flees her small village and goes to work for the king, who keeps a squad of so-called bloodbound like Rachelle as security. Soon she is deeply enmeshed in palace intrigue and forestborn plotting, both of which center on Armand, the king’s illegitimate son, and Erec, the sexy but faithless captain of the guard. Though Rachelle’s inner monologue is often bogged down by repetitive moments of self-loathing and doubt, Hodge’s writing occasionally glimmers with flashes of brilliance: “the neckline bared her shoulders and her collarbones like a declaration of war.� Plot twists and romance keep the pages turning in this grim and intricate take on the classic tale.

Is the Clay family jinxed? That’s the word going around the town of Dimvale. Ever since Morton, James, and their older sister Melissa moved with their dad into the old house formerly owned by comic book artist John King, creator of Morton’s favorite comic, the magnificently creepy Scare Scape, magic and monsters have come to life around them. After the deluge of horrors in Fisher’s series opener, Scare Scape (2013), James and Melissa are comically shellshocked and at first turn a blind eye to the odd two-headed rat or levitating middle schooler. But it soon becomes evident that if the town is not to be deluged with slavering weirdness, they will need to take action - and they’ll need help. Great contemporary lite horror - fills the gap between Goosebumps and Jonathan Maberry’s Rot & Ruin series.

Fifteen-year-old Dolce has always known she is a freak. Despite the love of her mother, who named her after the Italian word for sweet, she can’t help but feel lonely and hideous, ridiculed and avoided by the other inhabitants of the tiny Venetian island of Torcello. She is a giant compared to them, with a ridiculously small head and grotesquely long fingers. That is, until she’s so driven by heartbreak that she leaves the island to brave an outside world she has always been taught was full of persecution and torment. As it turns out, Dolce is not the monster she has thought herself to be, and the world she finds herself in—that of the glittering medieval nobility of Venice—is more subtle in its torments. Though Napoli’s complicated plot sometimes leans heavily on contrived revelations, her exceptionally clever and well-researched arrangement of fact and possibility gives one of fairy tale fiction’s most irredeemable villains an intriguing backstory. This emotional tale is a surefire winner for fans of fractured fairy tales.
