Richelle Mead
“Stop fighting me!" he said, trying to pull on the arm he held.

He was in a precarious position himself, straddling the rail as he tried to lean over far enough to get me and actually hold onto me.

鈥淟et go of me!鈥 I yelled back.

But he was too strong and managed to haul most of me over the rail, enough so that I wasn鈥檛 in total danger of falling again.

See, here鈥檚 the thing. In that moment before I let go, I really had been contemplating my death. I鈥檇 come to terms with it and accepted it. I also, however, had known Dimitri might do something exactly like this. He was just that fast and that good. That was why I was holding my stake in the hand that was dangling free.

I looked him in the eye. "I will always love you."

Then I plunged the stake into his chest.

It wasn鈥檛 as precise a blow as I would have liked, not with the skilled way he was dodging. I struggled to get the stake in deep enough to his heart, unsure if I could do it from this angle. Then, his struggles stopped. His eyes stared at me, stunned, and his lips parted, almost into a smile, albeit a grisly and pained one.

"That鈥檚 what I was supposed to say. . .鈥 he gasped out.

Those were his last words.”

“Dimitri is dead," she said.

It was a statement, not a question, but she was looking to me for confirmation. I wondered if I'd given away something, some hint that there was still more to the story. Or maybe she just needed the certainty of those words. And for a moment, I considered telling them that Dimitri was dead. It was what the Academy would tell them, what the guardians would tell them. It would be easier on them...but somehow, I couldn't stand to lie to them鈥攅ven if it was a comforting lie. Dimitri would have wanted the whole truth, and his family would too.

"No," I said, and for a heartbeat, hope sprang up in everyone's faces鈥攁t least until I spoke again. "Dimitri's a Strigoi.”

“I tore open one side and reached in. My hand closed around something cold and metallic. I knew before I even pulled it out what it was. It was a silver stake.
"Oh God," I said.
I rolled the stake around, running my finger over the engraved geometric pattern at its base. There was no question. One-of-a-kind. This was the stake I'd taken from the vault in Galina's house. The one I'd-
"Why would someone send you a stake?"asked Lissa.
I didn't answer and instead pulled out the envelope's next item:a small note card. There, in handwriting I knew all too well, was:

'You forgot another lesson:Never turn your back until you know your enemy is dead. Looks like we'll have to go over the lesson the next time I see you-which will be soon.
Love, D.”

His failed attempt to dodge the stake had made him lose his balance on the edge. The stake's magic made the rest easy, stunning him and his reflexes.
Dimitri fell.”

“Put it out," said Dimitri. "Put it out or she dies."
Lissa finally found her voice, even with her air cut off. "Don't listen to him," she gasped out." He's going to kill us anyway."
But behind her, the heat died out. Shadows fell across Dimitri's face once again. Christian wouldn't risk her, even though she was right. It hardly seemed to matter.
"Actually," said Dimitri, voice peasant amid and grim scene, "I'd rather you two stay alive. At least for a little while longer."
I felt Lissa's face move to a frown. I wouldn't have been surprised if Christian's did too, judging from the confusion in his voice. He couldn't even manage a snarky comment. He could only ask the obvious: "Why?"
Dimitri's eyes gleamed. "Because I need you to be bait for Rose.”

“Roza." His voice had the same wonderful lowness, the same accent...it was all just colder. "You forgot my first lesson:Don't hesitate." I just barely saw his fist striking out toward my head...and then I saw nothing at all.”

“A red veil covers the room as walls, which flow but do not stand. Screams echo from every stone. Incense I smell of sandalwood and lavender, and lavender I taste as well. A tea, a brew, or a liquid I sip. Calm I feel. Gyfu shows a great sacrifice will be made. I feel tied in knots as light reflects from crystals found in rock. All is not what it seems. Choices are made, the white handled bolline swings, the steps slide, gates swing open, memories flow like rain鈥攂etrayal and it is done. --A quote by Gannon reciting his vision”

“...I remember that my mother had always said to be polite and finish my meal. At last he gave no more struggles. The deed was done. Now the boat contained four men, not one heartbeat among us. The fate they had destined for another claimed them as well. The irony of it all was more delicious than the blood consumed. -- Quote by Lane DeLuca”

“In my recollection, there have been many places and people I have been both blessed and cursed to know. Much joy and heartache can come from immortality, for loneliness can be lethal. I have unfortunately witnessed many I cared for, both mortal and not, perish. I have never been able to own anything that was truly mine. Once, I possessed everything, but many moons have come since that time. -- Sacha Borishauski”

“You needn鈥檛 worry. I don鈥檛 think you have aged enough for me to partake of you. Blood, women, wine, and cheese all get better with the passage of time. You are not quite ripe. --Lane DeLuca”

“You believe me, don鈥檛 you? You really do. Why do you believe me? Did Anechka do something to you? Now I owe you; and I may look little, but I know how to fight. I learned by fighting with Hargis. I鈥檒l kick her ass if she hurts you, Lane; just tell me鈥攚hat did she do? -- Blayne Giano O'hicidhe”

“Amintirile din trecutul s膬u deveniser膬 mult mai puternice acum. Se convinsese c膬 avea s膬 葯i-o scoat膬 din minte 葯i suflet. C膬p膬tase toat膬 cruzimea pe care o dorise.
