She has no idea what the masterpiece will be yet, but she's enjoying the swish of the waves and she hums and creates. Some kids will have no frame of reference to relate to a kid like Jamie, but others will immediately be drawn to her introverted ways and feelings.
The illustrations are gorgeous and diverse and this would make a great addition to a story time about feelings, questions, the beach, creativity, being yourself, or manners. I definitely recommend it....more
I read this book and I'm left scratching my head. What's the point? Surely plenty of adults may have pondered the concept of success, or knowing when I read this book and I'm left scratching my head. What's the point? Surely plenty of adults may have pondered the concept of success, or knowing when they've arrived, but kids of an age to enjoy picture books, do not. If the author had defined "There" as a specific place, yes, absolutely kids would get it and relate! But "There" as an abstract idea is just not appealing to little kids. Frankly, even as an adult I had no idea what the author was referring to with the use of the word "There."
Overall, gorgeous pictures, but a pretty disappointing read and I won't be using it in story time....more

My problem, is that the hair itself has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story. Maybe the hair is supposed to be wings that help her fly? I don't know.
The book itself is beautiful, the illustrations are super cute - except that the little girl's face is essentially the same in every picture. The only difference is whether her not her mouth is open or closed when she smiles, but the expression is the same no matter what she's doing. And, despite the fact that she's supposed to be celebrating her hair and swimming underwater or flying or timing dinosaurs who race, her hairstyle stays the same - never a single hair out of place. It's just weird. The rhyming is also off a few times so this isn't a great group read aloud. But, this is a great bedtime or one-on-one story with really little kids developing their imaginations....more

So, when II'm not really a fan of the original Alice in Wonderland, but I have read other things by this author that I quite enjoyed (e.g. Farworld). So, when I heard this author speak about this book specifically, and he really captured my imagination, I decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did. It didn't blow me away, but it was entertaining and I really liked the characters of Celia and Tyrus. I felt like both were really well fleshed out and totally relatable.
This book has some of the same whimsicality of the original Alice books, but the characters are far more likeable and relatable and the story line just seems a little more grounded in reality. While this may not appeal to some readers, it does appeal to me. I read a lot of fantasy and I love world-building and immersing myself in fantastical things. But, silly and nonsensical just annoys me. Somehow, despite the original source material, Savage manages to weave a tale that perfectly balances logic and imagination. If you're a fan of middle grade adventures, fractured fairy tales, Carroll's original work, or Savage as an author, I definitely recommend this book to you!

If told with LOTS of enthusiasm, (and the words fortunately and unfortunately explained before reading), this would get the story time kids laughing. The situations are just silly and crazy. For some reason, the fact that Milo and his mom and grandma are monkeys really bugs me. I think maybe it's because they look more caricature than realistic, I don't know.
