It was never boring or felt overrated. It was a very original, weird, entertaining, funny novel to read. Proust messed up with my mind through the whole book. I liked how he played with time, memories, characters. He could freeze time and write many pages about seemingly small moments. As an authobiographical book it didnt make sense at all but as a fiction it was totally believable.
It was a special book that alone show easily why Proust is seen as an important writer. It was a challenging read that i felt i had to focus extremly on to get all the layers, subtle things he was doing.
Next i will try to read of him something more simple because of lack reading time. I look forward to reading more books in this famous series of his. I didnt give him, this book 5 stars because i know he improves with other works. The second part of the 3 parts in the novel was not as strong. Also i read this in a very good swedish translation....more

It retells the story over and over in different ways. What her action meant to her, what if he didnt sacrifice her son etc. The Story is woven into the framework of eighteenth century West Africa.
It was a beautifully written story that had dream like atmosphere in the legendary times the story it was set in. It was written like a mix of a fable and the great ancient Greek dramas where the supernatural, mythology plays a big role. It was also trying to understand the legendary Queen like she was a real, normal women.
Im impressed by the author and hope her other works are longer, written with the same quality....more

This novel is a powerful story that created morality panic in the 70s because its so open in its autobiograhical portrayal of female sexuality and the writers public dealings through the novel with her mother.
I think its psychological complex main character, themes made the story so powerful,so current to me. This kind of non-genre novel that actually has something important to say is rare today.

Wimsey was a good, smart detective without overdoing it and more important he had a humorous side, a personality that was fun to read. Sayers prose, style specially early in the novel was impressive, the strengths of the book.
The weakness of the novel was the detective story when dealing with police detectives. Also she overdid with the too detailed,over-thought wild theories that went on for pages and then was dismissed as a red herring. Lord Wimsey ended the case well but it was a bit uneven novel, story overall.
It was a good tryout of the series and a very fun character to read so i look forward to reading the more famous, acclaimed novels of the series. ...more

No social commentary, critism of his times as you might expect. Not like Ancient Greek writers who could comment negativly on the politics of their nation. More like propaganda, flattery of Augustus,Ceasar, others of Empire family. They were after all divine and they had complete power to censor art.
Still Ovid was banished from Rome and his frank writings of love, sex was one of the reasons....more

Unlike other Greek classic authors he dares to treat war,the women on the losing side of it in a realistic way. What happens to real humans of those days when the legendary battles, wars end, slavery or worse.
Aischylos,Sofocles,Homer for example makes war mostly to be about honor, heroism and other male values. ...more

This play i think is his masterwork and stronger than Oidopus Rex play. Great story, strong poetry, more depth in comparison to that other famous play. I prefered Euripedes to him when i read them both first but after his strong female portrayal, timeless story, characters i have more respect for his writing. Like most Classic Ancient Greece drama its better in written form, its closer to poetry than modern plays. ...more

It was a subtle play with depth and it had great social commentary on Ibsens times. A scathing commentary on the double standard in gender roles, morality. Very critical on priests, church, patriarchal society that stand for the old ways. It had themes like that other than the clear ones in the story that drive foreward the story.
Not as modern as plays in his times when it comes to form, layout, characters but themes wise he was what is called a modernist in plays. Specially since i read a Strindberg play at the same time that was a clear advocate on the 19th century views on women, religion, that old social system.
Since i read it for lit class this play worked very well because it had alot to say that i could read out of. It was also a pleasure to read even if you didnt read it for lit class. I tend to read in both ways since classic literature is more than just to analyse for lit class thing for me. ...more

It was only two characters with over the top feelings screaming at each other. That sounds like many great plays but you need more quality, depth than this.
In the foreward Strindberg says he wanted the characters to be characterless. It felt too much like the main female character was only a way to write his views on how a woman of his times should not be. Jean the male main character had more depth, motive he was a person while she was only a symbol of everything that is wrong with a woman in the writers eyes.
