NOW i almost The most disappointed I’ve ever been with a book.... I am OBSESSED with the Roman empire and when I found this book “the Roman Empire.. NOW i almost hyperventilated with excitement. Cya TBR, this book was next on my list.
Things that made this unreadable:
Crucifixion is still a thing? Which I know is a massive part of Roman history but... that was banned well before the fall of Rome so did that just not happen or what?
Why isn’t Rome called Roma and London something a little more Roman?
Literally nothing in this book brings the Roman Empire into today... its this weird blend of togas and cctv and my head just COULD NOT wrap my head around it... I expected to read a shocking development and believable progression of new Rome and all I got is guys called Marcus and guns?
The “abilities part of this story???? Um... way to make this fantastical instead of “history rewritten
Why is this set in the future? I think writing a futuristic novel AND a history rewritten novel was too much for this author, I constantly felt like she couldn’t decide between the magnetic railway in the sky or slavery
Sigh. Just another great idea that was poorly executed. ...more

I lovedddd the first 1/3, it was giving me a mixture of coming of age drama & sadness with the dark dreams from a horror TV series (like the deer antlers in Hannibal). In short, I was so here for it. I had no idea where it was going, but I liked that. And then it turned.. weird? It was terrifying and strange but.. not in a good way. Everyone says this was Christian fiction but it’s more catholic/religion focused and even then it completely changes the roles and acts of the characters of the catholic faith, do it’s almost not even catholic by the end of it either ...more

IUghhhhh I finally made it to the 100 page mark and I still hate it so cya book, you had your chance. A time travelling serial killer! Count me in... I thought. This is so boring - I was so over harpers character and his chapters in the 30s. He is neither charming to make you secretly root for him or psychotic to make you afraid of him. He’s just a killer and that’s it. Plus... there’s no real mystery here - it’s just a girl chasing a guy who can time travel and it kinda makes your head hurt after a while. ...more

The way this is written makes me want to tear my eyeballs out. Foul language, characters that my eyes roll into the next century and a cringe lack of technological knowledge “I booted up my computer and downloaded google. That first crime scene at the highway should’ve given me a heads up that the rest of this book was going to SUCK. The way one of the forensic investigators talks about the victim being raped was one of the worst displays of “tryna write ruthlessly but instead was a reflection that the author has zero skill and resorts to disgusting ways to shock the reader. “I bet I’ll find heaps of semen in her tw*t and her a** The sex scenes with Alex and his gf? Ok we get it, you made her come. So cringe because it makes you feel as if the author is writing as he wishes to be. Then. THEN. However, provided the other side of this story held up - family crime drama - I kept going. Mistake. His wife kills herself. He discovers she had herpes so he gets himself checked... he gets his son who’s a doctor to inspect him? Why would you not just save your son the trauma of inspecting your d*ck and go to a regular doctor. Weirdest part of the book for me. And then TO SOOTHE HIS GRIEF of losing his wife of 30 something years... he sleeps with everything with a heartbeat. Sorry no. What the actual eff is wrong with me this is QUEEN BARDUGO ALEXA.
I could not for the life of me get into this, the characters were so bland, there’s heaps of intellectual jokes that I just didn’t get at all, so much information on spell casting and lingo of spells that I just had no idea about and after forcing myself to reach almost halfway, I gave up because nothing has really happened?? And, I admit, I read some other people’s reviews on this and they said almost nothing happens the entire book so CYA.
I. Don’t. Understand. This had everything going for it - Secret societies, occult, University, murder ugh ugh ugh why didn’t I like this. Maybe I’ll try it again one day? Or, more realistically, maybe it will continue to gather dust on my shelf while I plunge into the depths of my TBR for books I actually enjoy. ...more

But, sadly, it’s not the best book. It’s a slow burner - more drama than thrill - but that doesn’t ruin it. The main character ruined it for me. Moves away from her husband for a job and is surprised when he has an affair? I mean... who separates and it ENHANCES a marriage? Her willingness to engage with “incredibly good looking students? It was a bit gross for me... “he looked up at me with those eyes like ??? You’re married, with a kid, teaching a lecture. I don’t know... it was a bit insta-love for someone who has a fuckton of commitment going on.
