I love books that get children into poetry, and this was an amazing example of exactly the kind of way I think you can get children to love it, with the adorable main character and a topic we all start feeling when the winter hangs around too long in the early spring and we are wishing for warmth, flowers and green to burst back into life.
I, also, love the way the more famous poems of the same topic are tucked into the part of the book after Ivy's poems from Winter to Spring, and are lined up with the pictures of whate she was talking about in her poem where, and then matching it to our late great writers to scaffold up the understanding and integration of these historical writings into the enjoyment of the young readers. ...more

As a deep and true lover of caramel and cooking, I jumped at this book. It is filled with scrumptious recipes but it's kindle/ipad book layout (which most cookbooks have been moving to for the ease of even digital cooking/book release/use in the kitchen) is absurd at worst and confusing at best. Just when I got used to the odd word additions at the end of each recipe that didn't belong and pictures only being at the end of recipes suddenly they were at the beginning.
I was sad about this one, honestly, and would love a cleaned up later version. ...more

I fell into this book when I was supposed to be falling asleep, and it swallowed my whole from the first flip of its first page. Lang Leave continues to know the language of love, longing, lust, and loss in more poignancy than most people will ever learn how to laugh, love and live. Everyone should read this book (and all the rest of them as well).

I have been dipping my feet into this pool for the last few months and making homemade bone broth, so imagine my surprise, delight, and excitement first when I saw this 2016 book being offered for review and then when the publication house sent through their agreement to let me be one of the early reviewers.
There is so much more in this book than I ever, ever, ever expected to find it. Information on all the nitty-gritty health benefits, stocks/broths for the bones of every animal most grocery stores carry, recipes for meals, for veggies, for desserts, for drinks, for everything.
I cannot stress enough how amazing this book was, and how I will be getting a copy in the spring/summer for my kitchen definitely ....more

I definitely expected more out of this book than I got, and maybe it means I went into it with the wrong ideas about what I would be getting out of it. The recipes are good, but they are ones I know I can find everywhere else. The seafood sections, which I'd been waiting for as I read it, was very tiny and that made me sad.
I could pass this by my New Englander best friend and maybe she could tell me this is totally relevant, all of it, but for now it's definitely a solid middle of the run book only. ...more

Landscapes in all season, animals in all actions, people from all walks of life doing and endless assortment of cultural things. I felt like my heart was in my chest every single time I turned the pages of this one.

Completely unaware of a large number of places that produced cheese and even one or two I was amazed to find didn't produce cheese that I totally thought had been.
The research, the map, the vast extensiveness and the amazing recipes make this one a clear winner for any cheese lover....more

I like that our main characters were one from a deep marginalized minority, and another from inside the terrorizing group as someone who does not believe in it at all.

I had heard the title of this book bandied about a bit, but I hadn't actually considered picking up a copy until the group decided to be reading it. This was odd and interesting, one side repressed and the other very open. A whole lot of sex and definitely some criminalizing going on, as the title does not lie. I wasn't massive captivated by either of our main characters. I really only became interested when other people could do this trick, too, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough to keep reading at all. ...more

So I actually got lucky with this one and read it because my best friend had it on hand and not because the group picked it. I finished reading it on a plane back from a spiritual weekend away, and three days later while reviewing our books for that meeting, I chimed in on wanting this one when someone else mentioned just finding it.
I'm seriously interested in a whole lot of the concepts and ideas going on in this series. I want to know more and more about all the mysteries surrounding "The Gods" and their "Keeper." I may be down on reading this one for a long time to come yet....more
As a fan of Art Balthazar from as far back as my early teens, and someone who's gotten to follow his Itty Bitty Works & meet him in person, I would haAs a fan of Art Balthazar from as far back as my early teens, and someone who's gotten to follow his Itty Bitty Works & meet him in person, I would have leapt buildings in a single bound for the chance to read this book.
I have seen a lot of the other reviews of this graphic novel from people who don't seem to be very acquainted with the Itty Bitty universe at all, and I want to set the record straight on saying this merges in perfectly with it. Sure, it's a different universe than Tiny Titans exists in, but it's generally the same kind of thing.
It's kid friendly, introduces all of your favorite characters -- our heroes, our villains, our companions. The book goes through the real world, to hell, to heaven, to outer space and underwater, as well as cute, cheerful things as normal as building fortresses out of boxes, getting crushes on new people in your life, and having birthday parties.
I think this would be a great reader for fans of Hellboy to be able to give to their kids, or young close relations.

Let's start from the beginning. Omg, That's Paleo? is written my Julie Bauer, who has a claim to fame on the internet at a blog by the same name, where she writes about here amazing journey with Paleo food and her life. I have been dying to get my hands on a copy of this book, and it was a sheer windfall when I signed up for a new early reviewer program and it was sitting there all shiny and wanting to be read.
This book is just as great as Julie's blog, and I felt like, aside from it being a book/recipe/themed sections format, that I was still reading along on her blog. From the beginning there are personalized notes from Julie everywhere. About things to keep on hand, about substitutions, about little extras on cooking, on spicing, on what to have with a recipe as an additional high point if you have one foot off the paleo wagon, too.
I laughed my way through reading this cookbook, like my best friend was sitting next to me whispering hints, sharing pictures, and telling my what her very favorite things in the world were, and it taught me some very important things:
1) That paleo totally fits in my current eating healthy structure. 2) That I desperately need to get off my tush and try cooking with almond/coconut flour (the pastries, waffles, and muffins that are all amazingly grain-free and fabulous looking are calling my name something hard). 3) That I'm keeping my waffle maker (that I;d been about to throw out for not using on anything but bacon). 4) I definitely need a hard copy of Julie's bible to go next to my stove in the kitchen (with my other favorite cookbooks of the year).

The paper is thick and heavy in a beautiful way that accents how small the poems are, floating in seas of cream paper, and separated in section by gorgeous, dark drawings.
This collaboration was made in the 1970's, and it's only being brought to publication now, but with a theme that goes back as far as 497 BC (when her the ancient Sophoclean tragedy took place), it's easy to see that this collection is timeless. That in it's timelessness, it's accessible to every age of women who will be reading it.
The poems themselves are harsh and haunting as all the experiences Antigone has gone through in the multiples plays and parts to her name. I take great pleasure in calling this my highest poetry favorite for 2014 so far, and am going to enjoy encouraging others to read it as well as gifting off copies when certain times of the year come around.
