Another reader described this story as a 'cutesy fantasy story' and I have to agree. The story and writing are very simple. That isn't a bad thing, or I wouldn't have rated it four stars, but you should definitely know this before reading the book. There aren't enough pages for character development or a deep connection to the characters. The romance is a side-note with two kisses and suddenly they are a couple.
I should probably mention that this is best read as a series, the bad guys are not defeated at the end of this story. And though I never felt like I had to keep reading (it just wasn't that engaging), I still happily read on because the stories are so short that it was easy to continue with the next story and I did enjoy reading them....more

I expected a fantastical tale about magical beings, family and love, what I didn't expect was a Big Brother feeling mixed in. The story is very light I expected a fantastical tale about magical beings, family and love, what I didn't expect was a Big Brother feeling mixed in. The story is very light on romance, the focus is on the MC getting to know the children (like the Antichrist, who is also a morbid 6-year old with a love for music) and having his beliefs questioned.
The government is oppressing the magical minority, their propaganda says it all: 'SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!' and 'REGISTRATION HELPS EVERYONE!'. There are 'orphanages' for magical children that are quite different from normal orphanages. Though those institutions are oppressive in nature ('WE'RE HAPPIEST WHEN WE LISTEN TO THOSE IN CHARGE', 'A QUIET CHILD IS A HAPPY CHILD', 'WHO NEEDS MAGIC WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR IMAGINATION') and children have to abide strict rules and regulations, most of those orphanages are nice and most importantly a safe environment for the children. Of course they have to be regulated and governed to ensure the safety of everyone, which is where the MC comes in. We have this timid, weak-willed, stick-up-his-ass drone working for the government, investigating magical orphanages in a caring but sterile way, never inquiring to what happens to the children after he makes his judgement. He follows every rule to the dot, is the perfect case worker and has no family or friends. His life is simple and plain. That is, until our drone gets a classified assignment and meets children that change everything he believes in....more

A great romance with ups and downs, flawed but lovely characters (which is how it should be), a meaningful journey and an intriguing story. However, even though the writing was good, the execution of all the potential fell a tad short with some aspects and there were things that didn't make sense without further explanations (I don't want to rant, let's just say the gods felt like a plot device). I also did not like the ending, it didn't feel right after their journey and all the sacrifices (view spoiler)[I felt slightly cheated by this perfect HEA, it felt unrealistic and cut short. Not every story needs a fairy tale HEA, some need a more real finding-peace-with-your-life-ending. (hide spoiler)]....more

I loved the story itself, but the end came too soon; I wanted to read about the difficulties of everyday life with Sam's disability, all the problems he mentioned that we never got to expreience. His body and how it functions was a major issue for Sam and I wanted to see Niko more involved in everyday care, wanted to see him confrontated with actual life together and the hardships that come with it [e.g. Sam's bladder emptying when it shouldn't or when to offer help and when to accept help]. It felt like Lindsey robbed me of the experience and just because the characters accepted they wanted to conquer their fears and have a life together everything was solved. There were so many issued left to explore about their relationship....more
