My 13-year-old daughter is reading this for school, and she wanted me to read it, too. It was a real treat listening to John Ritter narrate this story (come to find out he died about 1.5 years after this was released), although this is definitely one of those middle-grade novels that will be more enjoyable for its intended audience. There are some really important messages about being true to yourself and compassion for others, but I think we, as a society, have learned so much about neurodivergence in the 25 years since this book was published, it feels a little dated in some ways....more

I finished this book a week ago, and I've been contemplating how to sum up my feelings for it. The narrative style, which itself included a theme of narrative control, jarred me at first. However, my feelings morphed from unsettled, to curious, to appreciative, to completely enamored! The character development was so rich, and I completely fell in love with Margo.
I appreciated the author's cleverness (side note: this is my first Rufi Thorpe book, but I am intrigued to read more) with her exploration of first person vs third person omniscient (had to google that one) in a way that helped me learn and stretch my brain, rather than made me feel naiive or like I was missing something. In other words, in addition to loving Margo, laughing at her wit and perspective, I felt kind of smart to have the author include me in a debate about what is "right" and "wrong".
This book was such a delight, and I loved nearly every minute of it!
P.S. The narrator's voice reminded me of Alicia Silverstone from "Clueless", one of my alltime favorite movies from when I was growing up--this could be a plus or a minus, depending on your experience! ...more
