To start with, following the literary version of a dumpster fire meets a train wreck that was the first and second books that only got progressively worse and worse the more I read, I was seriously not looking forward to actually finishing this series. But, once I start doing something, I cannot just stop halfway through. I am committed to seeing it through to the end.

That being said, the plot in this book was practically non-existant. Pretty much the first... 75% of this book could have been cut out and literally nothing would have changed. They spend a lot of time sitting around and talking about doing stuff without actually... you know, literally doing any of that.

So by the time that we actually got to the main issues of the book, which were: the congregation, Benjamin, and the Book of Life, everything just felt rushed and like it had literally been squeezed in at the absolute last minute. Like Harkness herself forgot that she actually had a plot going on, and then remembered that she was only supposed to be writing a trilogy, and not... a series or whatever.

That right there is just poor writing and planning on her part. Any editor would have helped her with that, but I got the feeling from the first book that there were no editors involved in the creation of this... monstrosity. That feeling never changed as I finished the series.

There was a moment when literally everything was put on hold until after Diana had the babies. And that's fine. Seriously. But the problem is... that the entire series felt like it was on hold until then. So literally nothing changed up until that moment.

And after they were born, it was like... Oh shit, I should probably finish this up. Which she did.

Except that I still have so many questions, and literally none of them were even hinted at why or anything even remotely satisfying. The book was more concerned with wrapping things up just so that they could squeeze in “and they lived happily ever after��.

Hell, half of the time, the characters in the book admit to themselves that they don't know why people are so hell-bent on getting the Book of Life that they'd literally kill for it. And that question is never answered. As soon as Diana finds it, that's pretty much it. She mentions it at the congregation meeting she goes to, but... nobody ever says “Okay, but why?��

The same could be said about the congregation and the laws that they uphold. Nobody ever really explains why this despot government has remained in power for so long without anybody ever going “why are these old farts still in charge?�� or the even more baffling question of “why do we still adhere to rules that were written at the height of the witch trials? Humans don't fear witches or vampires, and, thanks to popular shows like Bewitched and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they've even begun to romanticize us a little bit.��
In fact, there is moment after moment of Diana or other people telling humans “so we're [insert supernatural creature here]�� and the humans are like “So like Samantha Stephens? Cool.�� It was incredibly frustrating to read.

And the characters barely struggled with anything. They had to find the three missing pages from the manuscript that were torn out in the 15th century. However, they already had one from before they knew that it was missing. The other was literally just handed to them by Andrew Hubbard, aka the creepy cult leader from the 15th century.
And the third and final page, them obtaining it was just about as easy as the other two pages. They waltzed up to some guy's house, and he handed it over after like... a minute. There was a dog involved, too, but it was of so little consequence.

And then with the congregation. The entire time, they've been this huge, angry force, but Diana has literally ONE meeting with them, and suddenly, most of them are on her side.
And even though they say that the congregation was disbanded and that Diana was put in charge of that, it all happened off page. Which is just as frustrating. Because this book took the time to describe in painful detail Diana delivering the babies, as well as things like baby spit up and diaper changes, but couldn't be bothered to tell us stuff that we actually want to read?

The only time that they actually struggle with something was in their confrontation with Benjamin. But even then, it just felt cheap due to a deus ex machina given to witch!Diana by goddess!Diana earlier in the book. So it was over in about two seconds, and everybody moved on with their lives.

Every single aspect of this book was laughably fake. From a high school football coach-slash-history teacher affording a million dollar lake-side home, to a woman living in a slum apartment having dreams of getting into a 2 million dollar beach-side condo in California... To the fact that she wanted said 2-million dollar condo, but was somehow going on a year-long sabbatical at work and that was going to bankrupt her... To said woman waltzing into a school one day and demanding a job as a teacher without any accreditation, certification, or degree...
On top of how ridiculous that everything was, the story itself was bogged down with every random background character that crossed the author's mind. These characters are literally not important, and we never saw 99% of them ever again. But yet, the narration wasted SO much time talking about them, as if they were going to take over the plot at any second.
When it wasn't doing that, it was dropping 40+ year old references. References that were already outdated when the leads, Garrett and Callie, would have been in high school, and have only aged like milk in the decade since.
In the beginning, we were wondering if the story didn't take place in the 1990's, because that's how bad the references were. We were both surprised when somebody dropped the date as being in 2018! I listened to this as an audio book on a recent road-trip I took with my husband. I'll let a comment my husband made sum up my feelings:
Between the events in LOTR and in this book, I'd sooner believe elves were real than the immense fantasy of this book.
Every single aspect of this book was laughably fake. From a high school football coach-slash-history teacher affording a million dollar lake-side home, to a woman living in a slum apartment having dreams of getting into a 2 million dollar beach-side condo in California... To the fact that she wanted said 2-million dollar condo, but was somehow going on a year-long sabbatical at work and that was going to bankrupt her... To said woman waltzing into a school one day and demanding a job as a teacher without any accreditation, certification, or degree...
On top of how ridiculous that everything was, the story itself was bogged down with every random background character that crossed the author's mind. These characters are literally not important, and we never saw 99% of them ever again. But yet, the narration wasted SO much time talking about them, as if they were going to take over the plot at any second.
When it wasn't doing that, it was dropping 40+ year old references. References that were already outdated when the leads, Garrett and Callie, would have been in high school, and have only aged like milk in the decade since.
In the beginning, we were wondering if the story didn't take place in the 1990's, because that's how bad the references were. We were both surprised when somebody dropped the date as being in 2018! I've been struggling to figure out how to even write a review for this, and literally the only thing I can think of is "It was a slog, and I'm glad to be finished."
