لا يمكن قراءة هذه الرواية ـ التي صدرت عن دار دال للنشر بترجمة جيدة لمها سعود ـ إلا ويشعر القارئ أنه مخطوف الأنفاس، وبأنه في قلب الجحيم، لدرجة تساءلتُ مراراً: أليس من المعقول أن يكون الجحيم هو الحياة على الأرض، وبأن البشر واهمون إذ يتخيلون أن الجحيم هو في مكان آخر!!

صحيح أن القصة التي تدور حولها أحداث الرواية، عن امرأتين أفغانيتين، مريم وليلى، مريم ابنة الحرام، لرجل أفغاني ثري، له ثلاث زوجات، لكنه وإثر علاقة عابرة مع امرأة وضيعة، وجد نفسه أباً لطفلة، لم يجرؤ على الاعتراف بها، لأنه سيشوه سمعته وسمعة زوجاته الثلاث وأبنائه، فعاشت مريم مع أمها، حياة بائسة لكنها كانت تحب والدها كثيراً، وتحلم أنه ذات يوم سوف يفتح له بيتها.. لكنه وبعد وفاة أمها منتحرة، أسرع بتزويجها من رجل يكبرها بأكثر من ثلاثين سنة، أرمل وله ابن توفي غرقاً.. تذعن مريم لمشيئة والدها وتكتم ألمها ، وتعيش مع زوجها خادمة.. ولم تنجح بأن تنجب له ولداً، فاتخذ من ذلك عذراً لضربها وتحقيرها ومعاملتها كما لو أنها حيوان، وتَفجّر حقده عليها ساحقاً ومروعاً، لدرجة أنه أجبرها ذات يوم أن تمضغ الحصى رغماً عنها، مستمتعاً بصوت تكسّر أسنانها..

For me, I found the whole concept of a Geisha unnatural. I mean, the idea of a young woman going to school to learn how to dance, sing and play musical instruments and dedicating her whole life to entertaining men is insulting!.
And don't even get me started on the whole "Mizuage" thing!. It was like having an auction on a woman's virginity and then selling it to the highest bettor!!. That part was ridiculous for god sakes!.

But I did enjoy the story of Sayuri, and learned a lot from her. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, and I hope it's as good as the book.

Some of the things I didn't like:
Sometimes the details that the writer went through were too much to handle and frankly a little boring.
Oh, and that Sayuri-san has one hell of a memory!. I'll never understand how she could remember such specific thoughts and conversations from her entire life in detail, especially in the years of her childhood before she even started keeping a journal!.

A great novel that introduced me to a whole new society with a very interesting culture. This book gave me a glance into a world where young women make the decision of becoming Geisha not for the glamorous party life Geisha live, but solely for the purpose of survival.

دائماً .. عندما أنتهي من قراءة كتاب لأمين معلوف, لا أستطيع أن أفكر بكلمة أصف بها أسلوبه أفضل من كلمة "أنيق". رواية جيدة. النهاية فاجئتني تماماً, ليس فقط لأنها غير متوقعة, ولكن أيضاً لأنها قصيرة جداً.
أحببت شخصية "آدم" جداً. ربما لأني شعرت بأني أتعرف من خلاله إلى أمين معلوف بنفسه نوعاً ما.

استمتعت بقراءتها. أعطيها أربعة نجوم.

الشك هو الطريقة الوحيدة للإقتراب من الحقيقة. كانت قناعتي بهذه المقولة تزداد مع كل صفحة من "عزازيل". وتزداد معها قناعتي بدنيوية أصول الدين. وبأن علاقة الإنسان مع الله هي فعلاً علاقة خالق/مخلوق, ولكنها لا تسير بالإتجاه الذي اعتدنا افتراضه.

وصلت حتى 77% من الكتاب , ثم قررت التوقف عن قرائته. والسبب بكل بساطة هو استخفاف الكاتب بعقل القارئ.

Suddenly there was a shipwreck and he was living on a floating zoo in the middle of the Pacific!. But that’s where the good part starts actually. As the story went on, it started to build up this entire world inside my head, making me imagine every detail and move, making me feel the pain, the loss, the fear and best of all the hope.
I lived inside the Life of Pi for almost five days, all the while wishing it never ends. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend. But it had to end sometime!.

It was only when I came to the last few chapters of the book that I started to see that there was so much more to it than I had realized. And that the good part was still to come. The ending was very mysterious to me when I finished. And I spent the next two days thinking about it unstoppably. I realized that Yann ended the story with an unanswered question, so it's left up to the reader to choose which version of the story they prefer to believe. The one with all the too-hard-to-believe things, the one that forces you to take a leap of faith to believe it. Or the one that's more realistic, and closer to the logical mind of man. So at the end, it all comes down to a question of "Do you believe in miracles?... Do you believe in God?..". And maybe the story of Pi can make you believe in God. For me, that's yet to be decided. But what I do know is that I prefered the animal version of Pi's life.
