"Housekeeper or housewife?" the soldier asks Silvana as she and eight- year-old Aurek board the ship that will take them from Poland to England at the end of World War II. There her husband, Janusz, is already waiting for them at the little house at 22 Britannia Road. But the war has changed them all so utterly that they'll barely recognize one another when they are reunited. "Survivor," she answers. Silvana and Aurek spent the war hiding in the forests of Poland. Wild, almost feral Aurek doesn't know how to tie his own shoes or sleep in a bed. Janusz is an Englishman now-determined to forget Poland, forget his own ghosts from the way, and begin a new life as a proper English family. But for Silvana, who cannot escape the painful memory of a shattering wartime act, forgetting is not a possibility. One of the most searing debuts to come along in years, 22 Britannia Road. is the wrenching chronicle of how these damaged people try to become, once again, a true family. An unforgettable novel that cries out for discussion, it is a powerful story of primal maternal love, overcoming hardship, and, ultimately, acceptance-one that will pierce your heart.]]> 296 Amanda Hodgkinson 1101514086 Susan 0 to-read 3.81 2011 22 Britannia Road

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

review:
Robert Crais is one of my favorite super-edgy mystery writers now. Elvis Cole and Joe Pike solve crimes their own way, and you had better not ask. I am a hopeless mystery-genre devotee, and I do enjoy Crais novels. I've discovered a hidden pocket of them in our library since I just retired, so I am a happy camper at the moment. Taken is disturbing in that the plot deals with groups of people who are help for ransom by what we used to call "coyotes," but they have moved far beyond that. These people are held until families can no longer send ransom money. Evidently these may be some of the victim that are found in the mass graves on the Mexican borders. Taken involves the kidnapping of two American citizens who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and were taken with one of these groups and were forced to live with these kidnap victims in unbelievable circumstances. Unfortunately, most of them don't have a Joe Pike and an Elvis Cole to save the day. In this novel, they were there, and it made a good read that got me up at 3:30 in the morning and kept me up until dawn to see what happened!

When Ellen Lang's husband disappears with their son, she hires Elvis Cole to track him down. A quiet and seemingly submissive wife, Ellen can't even write a check without him. All she wants is to get him and her son back—no questions asked.

The search for Ellen's errant husband leads Elvis into the seamier side of Hollywood. He soon learns that Mort Lang is a down-on-his-luck talent agent who associates with a schlocky movie producer, and the last place he was spotted was at a party thrown by a famous and very well-connected ex-Matador. But no one has seen him since—including his B-movie girlfriend.

At the same time the police find Mort in his parked car with four gunshots in his chest —and no kid in sight—Ellen disappears. Now nothing is what it seems, and the heat is on. It's up to Elvis Cole and his partner Joe Pike to find the connection between sleazy Hollywood players and an ex-Matador.]]>

My Heart Belongs is one of those autobiographies that just makes you want to re-read it about every five or ten years because it makes you smile. Mary Martin never takes herself seriously. With all the "Dallas" and J.R. hype going on right now, I couldn't help but think of his mother and grab my tattered old copy of her book and read it again. She had an incredible life. She helped Rogers and Hammerstein write some of their most famous musicals, and the stories she has to tell about early Broadway! She worked with so many famous (and not so famous!) people, and she has a way of spinning a yarn that only a girl from Weatherford, Texas, can do. Deep? Not at all. Fun? Oh, yes! I can't wait to read it again in another six or seven years.

Each day is a struggle for Amanda Gleason's newborn son as he battles a rare immune deficiency. Justin's best chance for a cure lies with his father, who was brutally murdered before Amanda even realized she carried his child.

Or was he?

One emailed photo changes everything, planting a seed of doubt that Amanda latches on to for dear a recent photo of a man who looks exactly like Paul. Could Justin's father be alive? The mother in her is desperate to find out. But tracking down a ghost when every second counts is not for amateurs.

Forensic Instincts is the one team up for the challenge.

A behaviorist. A former navy SEAL. A techno-wizard. An intuitive. A retired FBI agent. A human-scent-evidence dog. Together they achieve the impossible, pushing ethical and legal boundaries whenever the ends justify the means.

The manhunt is on for the elusive father. Yet the further FI digs into his past, the more questions are raised about whether the man Amanda fell in love with ever really existed at all.

Dark secrets. Carefully crafted lies. From the congressional halls of Washington, D.C., to exclusive Hamptons manors, there are ruthless people who would stop at nothing to make Forensic Instincts forget about the man Amanda desperately needs to find.

Little do they realize that once Forensic Instincts takes the case, nothing will stop them from uncovering the shocking truth that transcends The Line Between Here and Gone.]]>

I have a more base sense of humor than Donalyn. It probably is a 4-star book because is isn't THAT well-written, most likely, but kids will love this, and I see so many writing opportunities with this book. I love it where they say don't wipe boogers under desks (or is it theater seats) because that's reserved for used gum. 5th grade boys will love the grossness of all of that, and so will so many others. It is just a fun book for all ages. I have IDEAS!!!

Younger kids will love the rhythm of this book, but the vocabulary is for older students. The whold book is riotous, as would be expected from a book by Al Yankovic - yes, Weird Al Yankovic. So much can be done with this book with classroom assignments since the word choices are so outstanding, and the entire thing is one huge poem, but it can just be read as a hysterical poem as well. When our librarians book committee was reading it aloud to consider it for our book list, we were in tears of laughter by the third page and knew it was going at the top of our list.

Amazing book for fourth grade and up - through high school if they are working on Civil Rights issues, mid-Twentieth Century life, and the like. Somehow I had missed the Green Book in my education, and I have researched it now. It fills in a hole in some of the teaching we need to do with books such as The Watson Go to Birmingham. The Green Book was a handbook that helped African-American families find places to eat, find gasoline, and stay overnight while on the road, especially in the South. Ruth's family experiences some of the very same things that Byron's family went through in Watson's and other books in the genre. Loved this book. It is warm, poignant, frustrating, and full of historical points that are shameful but important to note in America's past. Terrific picture book!

<![CDATA[Horses Never Lie about Love: The Heartwarming Story of a Remarkable Horse Who Changed the World Around Her]]> 11136423 But when True Colors was delivered to Harris’s ranch three months later, she was unrecognizable. She had gone feral, run away, and been recaptured. Terrified of people, she was head-shy from the infected sores on her face and her lungs were damaged by smoke-induced pneumonia. She sensed demons hiding in everything from the scent of fabric softener on clothes to a gate in a fence. Her will to escape was enormous. This injured, traumatized horse existed between two worlds—wild and domesticated—and belonged to neither. But there were glimmers of hope: The other horses fell in love with her on sight, just as Harris had. And true to her name and herself, True Colors would never pretend to be something she was not; with her wise, intuitive nature, she would end up changing the lives of everyone she encountered, animal and human.

Horses Never Lie About Love is the story of this remarkable horse and the revelations about life and love that she gave Harris over the course of their decades together. Now thirty-three years old, this complex, magnetic animal retains the outsize personality that transforms everyone around her, both human and equine. True Colors has grown to become the heart of the range and the farm, her quiet wisdom transmitting a strength of character that transcends the thin line between animals and the humans they love. There is a famous horseman’s saying: A horse never lies about its pain. But maybe we should also consider: A horse never lies about love.

I thought it was slow - too much build-up of the whole pharmaceutical thing. Then it would speed up again toward the end. Parts of this book were great. I loved the whole idea of David walking out of the crashingly overbearing law firm and doing his own thing. I thought Grisham did a good job of touching on two major problems in society - lead paint on toys and pharmaceutical litigation. Still debating between a three and a four, but sloughing through the legalese and the wishy-washy Wally made me give it a 3.

Martin marched so

This is the seed of a unique and inspirational picture book text, that is part historical, part poetry, and entirely inspirational. It symbolically takes the reader through the cumulative story of the US Civil Rights Movement, showing how select pioneers' achievements led up to this landmark moment, when we have elected our first black President.

Each historical figure is rendered by a different award-winning African-American children's book illustrator, representing the singular and vibrant contribution that each figure made.

Lending historical substance, the back matter includes brief biographies of: George Washington Carver, Jesse Owens, Hattie McDaniel, Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama.]]>

I've also used this book over and over for presentations. Why didn't I give it 5 stars? I don't really know. It is awfully good. OK, OK, I just went back and changed it. When you use something all the time, you must like it enough to rate it highly. I've heard Harver Silver speak more than once and respect his work. I continue to be fascinated by multiple intelligence from the time I heard Roger Taylor had us work with them in-depth in the mid-90 duringin his week-long G/T workshop one summer. I was hooked and have continued to delve into new research. This book mentions eight, but not the two more that have been toyed with. I am using it to prepare a research paper to support a presentation I am giving soon for a recertification, and I am finding new and wonderful things about how the brain learns, and what we need to remember to teach these incredible beings we have as our students.

Excellent book for organizing books in a variety of ways. Lesesne specializes in young adult readers, but our librarians have used this book with all levels of readers. We found that we can create reading ladders within one grade level quite well - perhaps not with the same intensity and interconnectedness Lesesne intended, but it does work on an intended level. Reading Ladders is a friendly, easy read that invites teachers and librarians to sit down and think about books, and what can be better fun?!!

Need to teach the difference between literal and figurative? Here you go - Parts, More Parts, and Even More Parts! Kids love these books because they are so.... dare I say it? Dumb, crazy, silly! FUN!!! Absurd is the best word, and best of all, students immediately see the point. A bit of Amelia Bedelia has found her way into these books in that the character takes everything he hears absolutely literally. Dad needed him to give him a hand? Visions of his hand flying off immediately came to mind! Oh, why not! It's a fun way for kids to see the literal in idioms. STAARS, anyone?

It's the story of the Wolong Natyure Reserve in China and how they care for the second twin panda while the mother pandas care for the one twin they can care for at a time. (I never thought about that before!). The picture of the sixteen little tiny pandas lined up together is just the cutest thing ever!!! You will have such an "Awwww!" factor in your room or library when you read this book. It's a wonderful book about working to save endangered species, and it is just darned cute, too!

A great book about how to turn a jeering "put-down" bully on his ear. Tyler could never do anything right in Jake's estimation. Jake always knew a better way to do everything. There was always a better product to buy than what Tyler bought. Jake made fun of Tyler's grades. Jake made fun of Tyler's guitar playing. Tyler's Uncle Kevin knew the answer though - he advised him to play out his frustration on his guiter, to keep on playing. He told him to play the blues until he felt better. As Uncle Kevin and Tyler strummed their guitar and talked, Tyler told about his problems with Jake. Through good humor and a little fun, Kevin showed Tyler the humor in the situation. It's a simple story about how to channel problems into a different direction to deal with a jeering bully who just won't quit.

I just re-read this book and found it better than ever. It's a biography of John Lennon spun through his song lyrics. The illustrations are the most wonderful collages that are as fascinating as the lyrics and the story. This book is for intermediate students and up. It isn't for elementary students. So much can be done with this outstanding books and with its format. What wonderful discussions you can have with your kids! I'm going to use it in a presentation I am giving in another month, and the ideas and pinging around in my head right now. One of our senior AP-English teachers loved it when I used it in a presentation to our teachers several years ago, and she took it and ran with it. She got our district Secondary Teacher of the Year, and I just know it was because of her cleverness with books like this. LOL!

One of a pair of chopsticks is broken, and while it is being repaired, the other learns it has qualities of its own that it learns to recognize. When the two are reunited, they have both learned strengths they have come to appreciate. This is a wonderful book for the young and for older students as well. Our book committee needs to look at it.

Sita's Ramayana 11097473 An American Library Association 2012 Notable Children's Book and a USBBY Outstanding International Books Honor Book

The Ramayana -- one of the great legends of ancient India -- is presented here in the form of a visually stunning and gripping graphic novel. Told from the perspective of the queen, Sita, it explores ideas of right vs. wrong, compassion, loyalty, trust, honor and the terrible price that war exacts from women, children, animals and the natural world.

After Sita, Rama and his brother are banished from their kingdom, Sita is captured by the arrogant King Ravana and imprisoned in a garden across the ocean. Ravana tries to convince Sita to be his wife, but she steadfastly refuses his advances. Eventually, Rama comes to her rescue with the help of the monkey Hanuman and his army, magic animals and gods. But Rama is unable to trust Sita and forces her to undergo an ordeal by fire to prove herself to be true and pure . . .

The Ramayana was first written in Sanskrit by the poet Valmiki around 300 B.C. It contains important Hindu teachings and has had great influence on Indian life and culture over the centuries.]]>

I thought this would be a hokey romance, but I found myself engrossed in the history of Hawaiian quilting and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have read some of the Elm Creek quilts in the past and thought they were OK, but this one was much better. I'm not much for romances unless they are REALLY good. This actually wasn't a romance at all but more of a story of recovery from a divorce and a bit of a travelogue of the island of Maui with Hawaiian quilting stirred throughout to make it a fun book to read. Maybe it's the quilter in me that enjoyed it more than the average bear.

Absolutely wonderful on so many levels. What began as a free-verse novels of a young girl "rented" to young homesteaders to help the bride adjust to life on the prairie quickly turned to much, much more. In paces the story was reminiscent of the prairie stories of Laura Ingals Wilder(the author later explained how she deary loved and greaty admired Wider's work). When the bride ran away, home to Ohio, and the husband followed her, May was left alone in the sod house on the prairie to fend for herself for months until her father woud return for her near Christmas. During these loney weeks unfolded another story, the story of her struggle to read and to comprehend. Another powerful question arises: what DID children with learning disabilities do? They suffered silently and endured taunts ad belittling remarks from children and adults alike. Rose has brilliantlyh woven a concept into the storyling that will make the reader thik, ad it wo't turn off student readers in my opinion.

The Young Pioneer is devoted to Comrade Stalin, the Communist Party, and Communism.
A Young Pioneer is a reliable comrade and always acts according to conscience.
A Young Pioneer has a right to criticize shortcomings.
But now that it is finally time to join the Young Pioneers, the day Sasha has awaited for so long, everything seems to go awry. He breaks a classmate's glasses with a snowball. He accidentally damages a bust of Stalin in the school hallway. And worst of all, his father, the best Communist he knows, was arrested just last night.

Jefferson's Sons 9742411
Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston are Thomas Jefferson's children by one of his slaves, Sally Hemings, and while they do get special treatment - better work, better shoes, even violin lessons - they are still slaves, and are never to mention who their father is. The lighter-skinned children have been promised a chance to escape into white society, but what does this mean for the children who look more like their mother? As each child grows up, their questions about slavery and freedom become tougher, calling into question the real meaning of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Told in three parts from the points of view of three of Jefferson's slaves - Beverly, Madison, and a third boy close to the Hemings family - these engaging and poignant voices shed light on what life was like as one of Jefferson's invisible offspring.]]>

Meticulously researched, extremely poignant, heart-tugging novel about the children of Sally Heming and Thomas Heming, Jefferson's Sons will be a hard sell for students, but it can be done. Those students who love the political soapbox, those who love to shout, "It's not fair!" could get this book off the ground. It starts slowly, but by the end I had to keep reading to see what happened to these fine people who just had to keep going when life gave them so little in the way of choices. Talk about unfair!!! Oh, the book talks that can emerge with this one!

Neversink 11671686 Neversink, is an epic tale of some very un-epic birds, a fast-paced and funny story of survival, friendship, and fish, in the vein of Watership Down and Kathi Appelt's The Underneath.

Along the Arctic Circle lies a small island called Neversink, home to a colony of odd-looking seabirds called auks, including one Lockley J. Puffin. With their oceanfront views and plentiful supply of fish, the auks have few concerns—few, save for Lockley's two best friends, Egbert and Ruby, a know-it-all walrus and a sharp-tongued hummingbird.

But all of this is about to change. Rozbell, the newly crowned king of the Owl Parliament, has long had his scheming eyes on the small colony to the north. Now Neversink's independence hangs in the balance. An insurgence of owls will inevitably destroy life as the auks know it—unless Lockley can do something about it.]]>

I wasn't all that five-star impressed until I began reading it to classes and talking about it with them. They loved it. We talked about how small children wouldn't "get it." They would enjoy the pictures and would understand the grandmother taking away the technology devices, but they really wouldn't understand why. Picture books are not always for small children! We talked about parodies and "Saturday Night Live" and why this book hit home with some people. We talked about whether it was something we needed to think about or not. (I confessed to them that I needed to quit playing just one more game of solitaire on my phone at night so I could finally find out who committed the murder in the book I'm reading. That is just DUMB.) This book has possiblities in several layers from this happy writing teacher who loves reading connections.

I went back and forth between four stars and five, but it's definitely a keeper, especially for a classroom tool with reading/writing connections. A Boy Called Dickens relates a slice of Dickens' life when he worked in a factory while the rest of his family was in debtors' prison and tells how he was able to pass the excruciatingly boring hours by telling stories to the other boys. It's not a picture book for young children. It will actually take sixth grade and older to begin to see some of the future Dickens material sprinkled throughout the text. There's a lot of depth in the simplicity of this thin little book.

New York 6257535
Rutherfurd celebrates America's greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga that showcases his extraordinary ability to combine impeccable historical research and storytelling flair. As in his earlier, bestselling novels, he illuminates cultural, social, and political upheavals through the lives of a remarkably diverse set of families.

As he recounts the intertwining fates of characters rich and poor, black and white, native born and immigrant, Rutherfurd brings to life the momentous events that shaped New York and the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near-demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the '90s, and the attacks on the World Trade Center. Sprinkled throughout are captivating cameo appearances by historical figures ranging from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to Babe Ruth.

New York is the book that millions of Rutherfurd's American fans have been waiting for. A brilliant mix of romance, war, family drama, and personal triumphs, it gloriously captures the search for freedom and prosperity at the heart of our nation's history.]]>

They Were Strong and Good 198783 They Were Strong and Good is a classic book that follows the path of one family's journey through American history. Robert Lawson introduces us to his forefathers and with them we brave Caribbean storms, travel to the wharf markets of New York, and fight in the Civil War. Amidst these adventures Lawson's grandparents meet, marry, and raise a family, and later his parents follow the same cycle of life. But this book is more than just the story of one family, it's a social history of our country. It reminds us to be proud of our ancestors--who they were, what they did, and the effect that they had on the nation we live in today.

None of them were great or famous, but they were strong and good. They worked hard and had many children. They all helped to make the United States the great nation that it now is. Let us be proud of them and guard well the heritage they have left us.

Prayer for a Child 1479055 This is a prayer written for one little girl, but it is a hopeful prayer for boys and girls all over the world.

It is full of the intimate gentleness for familiar things, the love of friends and family, and the kindly protection of God. It carries a universal appeal for all ages and races, and brings out hearts and minds the deep responsibility for preserving for all times the faith and hopes of little children.

Rachel Field wrote this prayer for her own daughter, but she now shares it with children all over the world. Her beloved children's books include Newberry Medal-winner Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, Calico Bush, and Hepatica Hawks.

Elizabeth Orton Jones has perfectly captured the spirit and reverence of Prayer For a Child. As in her own Twig, Big Susan, and Song of the Sun, she has found that simple magical key to a child's heart.]]>

White Snow, Bright Snow 1027587 When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grownups do when a snowstorm comes.

But the children laughed and danced, and caught the lacy snowflakes on their tongues.

All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book—the frost ferns on the window sill, the snow man in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world. Roger Duvoisin's pictures in soft blue half-tones with brilliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the gaiety and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text.

Alvin Tresselt is the author if this book as well as at least sixteen books on the Lothrop list. White Snow, Bright Snow was first published in 1947.

Roger Duvoisin illustrated this book and is the author and illustrator of three books on the Lothrop List, including A for the Ark. He has illustrated numerous other books for Lothrop, including White Snow, Bright Snow, for which he received the Caldecott Medal.

<![CDATA[Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War]]> 10900047 A Library Journal Top Ten Best Books of 2011
A Boston Globe Best Nonfiction Book of 2011

Bestselling author Tony Horwitz tells the electrifying tale of the daring insurrection that put America on the path to bloody war

Plotted in secret, launched in the dark, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was a pivotal moment in U.S. history. But few Americans know the true story of the men and women who launched a desperate strike at the slaveholding South. Now, Midnight Rising portrays Brown's uprising in vivid color, revealing a country on the brink of explosive conflict.

Brown, the descendant of New England Puritans, saw slavery as a sin against America's founding principles. Unlike most abolitionists, he was willing to take up arms, and in 1859 he prepared for battle at a hideout in Maryland, joined by his teenage daughter, three of his sons, and a guerrilla band that included former slaves and a dashing spy. On October 17, the raiders seized Harpers Ferry, stunning the nation and prompting a counterattack led by Robert E. Lee. After Brown's capture, his defiant eloquence galvanized the North and appalled the South, which considered Brown a terrorist. The raid also helped elect Abraham Lincoln, who later began to fulfill Brown's dream with the Emancipation Proclamation, a measure he called "a John Brown raid, on a gigantic scale."

Tony Horwitz's riveting book travels antebellum America to deliver both a taut historical drama and a telling portrait of a nation divided―a time that still resonates in ours.]]>

How to Save a Life 10757806
Mandy Kalinowski understands what it’s like to grow up unwanted—to be raised by a mother who never intended to have a child. So when Mandy becomes pregnant, one thing she’s sure of is that she wants a better life for her baby. It’s harder to be sure of herself. Will she ever find someone to care for her, too?

As their worlds change around them, Jill and Mandy must learn to both let go and hold on, and that nothing is as easy—or as difficult—as it seems.]]>

Stupid Fast (Stupid Fast, #1) 9639243 From Book 1: Praise for Stupid Fast
"A rare mix of raw honesty and hilarity. Stupid Fast is Stupid Good!" -Peter Bognanni, author of The House of Tomorrow

I AM NOT STUPID FUNNY.
I AM STUPID FAST.

My name is Felton Reinstein, which is not a fast name. But last November, my voice finally dropped and I grew all this hair and then I got stupid fast. Fast like a donkey. Zing!

Now they want me, the guy they used to call Squirrel Nut, to try out for the football team. With the jocks. But will that fix my mom? Make my brother stop dressing like a pirate? Most important, will it get me girls-especially Aleah?

So I train. And I run. And I sneak off to Aleah's house in the night. But deep down I know I can't run forever. And I wonder what will happen when I finally have to stop.]]>

Juniper Berry 9869553
On a cold and rainy night Juniper follows her parents as they sneak out of the house and enter the woods. What she discovers is an underworld filled with contradictions: one that is terrifying and enticing, lorded over by a creature both sinister and seductive, who can sell you all the world's secrets in a simple red balloon. For the first time, Juniper and Giles have a choice to make. And it will be up to them to confront their own fears in order to save the ones who couldn't.

M.P. Kozlowsky's debut novel is a modern-day fairy tale of terror, temptation, and ways in which it is our choices that make us who we are.]]>
