I have fun reading the whole book, but what picked me interested was the conversation between May Kasahara and Mr. Okada (and her letters) in a strange way I feel like she was able to express some of my feelings, like we share the same sky of thoughts; I was able to understand her, she’s only seventeen-year-old girl, but she has a deep understanding of the world.
And here it what she said about death, I can’t relate more:

“If people lived forever-if they never got any older-if they could just go on living in this world, never dying, always healthy-do you think they’d bother to think hard about things, the way we’re doing now? إن الهدر يبدأ من هدر الدم إلى هدر الوقت مرورا بهدر الفكر والوعي والإبداع، "وقد يتخذ الهدر شكل عدم الاعتراف بالطاقات والكفاءات أو الحق في تقرير المصير والإرادة الحرة وحتى الحق بالوعي بالذات والوجود" (ص 28). لذلك يعتبر حجازي أن الهدر أكثر خطورة من القهر. فبينما يعني القهر مثلاً اعترافاً بكيان الآخر، وإن اعترافاً مشروطا بأن يبقى الآخر ضمن خضوعه لي وملكيتي، ولكن الهدر يرتب "سَحباً للاعتراف أصلاً بقيمة الكيان أو الطاقات أو الوعي أو المكانة" (ص 29). ويمكن طرح مثال على ذلك "العولمة" التي تهدر معنى الانتماء للقومية باعتبارها تسلخ الهويات وتلحق الجميع باقتصاد السوق ومفهومه بدلا من اقتصاد المجتمع المحلي والوطن.

The first read of the year was, unfortunately, a disaster. I couldn’t find any clear purpose or meaningful intent in this book, and it wasn’t enjoyable either. The only reason I kept reading was out of curiosity about how it would end and why it was chosen for a Kdrama adaptation. The story felt superficial, and the protagonist’s claim that the marriage agency was different from prostitution was unconvincing, especially since 80% of the book focused on sex.

فى هذه الرواية نحن أمام عجوز يخرج بقاربه ويتوغل في البحر لكي يصطاد ويتمكن من صيد سمكة كبيرة ويبدأ في رحلة العودة إلى الشاطئ وهو قرير العين بها لأن رحلته أتت بثمارها ولكن ليس كل ما يتمناه المرء يدركه فسرعان ما تخرج أسماك القرش المتوحشة من مكامنها البحرية لكي تنهال على السمكة التي ربطها العجوز إلى قاربه الصغير وبالرغم من كل محاولات العجوز المستميتة لكي ينقذ سمكته إلا أن جهوده ذهبت أدراج الرياح ونجحت القروش في التهام السمكة ولم يتبقى منها سوى جمجمتها وسلسلتها الفقرية.]]> 188 Ernest Hemingway 9772701308 Chaimaa 2 3.52 1952
