This novel was very well crafted and I really enjoyed the elements that felt like Dancing with the Stars. I've always wanted a series of books that play at some of my favorite competition tv series (Survivor, The Amazing Race etc.) so this was a fun read for me. Those shiny and posh elements did not overshadow the heart of this novel, which is Phoebe's journey to overcoming past demons. I thought this part of the story was handled with grace and great care.

As someone who doesn't really enjoy any kind of stand up comedy, I didn't really connect with that part of Phoebe, but I did admire her courage and the way that she used her passion for humor to bring her out of a very dark place. On the opposite side of this, I adored Cyrus. He was a Frasier Crane-like character that I definitely had a crush on.

I do think this novel sagged toward the middle, and could have done with the competition itself being a little shorter. I'm also not a fan of the sudden third-act breakup trope. While I feel like the explanation was there for this in the novel, the story elements after it felt rushed and expected.

Overall, this is another Painter novel that I greatly enjoyed and know many will resonate with! Definitely pick it up if you are a DWTS or Frasier fan, or if you're looking for a rom com with a serious heart.

I received a digital Advanced Reader's Copy of this novel. All thoughts and reactions are my own.]]>

Beyond The Surface: A Novel 214546328

Paul O'Reilly is part of the Army Specialized Training Program, which is supposed to keep him safe while World War II tears through Europe. But when the program is disbanded, he finds himself on the front lines with the rest of the 66th Division, the Army's promises dissolved.

When Paul meets Anna, he can't deny his feelings, though she pretends he doesn't mean more to her than any other soldier. When the SS Leopoldville transports the nurses across the English Channel one week before Christmas, Anna could never imagine that same ship would sink to the bottom on Christmas Eve with Paul and the rest of the Black Panthers left to fight for their lives.

Beyond the Surface is a story of going the distance for one's calling. It is also a tribute to the men of the 66th Division and a remembrance of their sacrifice, bringing to light what was long kept in the dark. The survivors of the sinking of the SS Leopoldville bore witness to a tragedy so great they could have easily been pulled beneath the waves that engulfed them on Christmas Eve, never to surface again. Still, they rose, battered, bruised, and worse for wear, but no less strong. Perhaps even stronger than before.]]>

Uncle Dolf is none other than Adolf Hitler. And Gretchen follows his every command.

Until she meets a fearless and handsome young Jewish reporter named Daniel Cohen. Gretchen should despise Daniel, yet she can't stop herself from listening to his story: that her father, the adored Nazi martyr, was actually murdered by an unknown comrade. She also can't help the fierce attraction brewing between them, despite everything she's been taught to believe about Jews.

As Gretchen investigates the very people she's always considered friends, she must decide where her loyalties lie. Will she choose the safety of her former life as a Nazi darling, or will she dare to dig up the truth—even if it could get her and Daniel killed?

The Enemy's Daughter 213618278 In the spirit of Lauren Wolk and Ruta Sepetys comes the tale of a girl fighting her way back home after surviving the sinking of the Lusitania—and learning to think for herself rather than accept the prejudice of wartime.

The year is 1915 and the world is at war. Marta and her father are passengers on the Lusitania, desperately trying to get back home to Germany. While aboard, they must keep their identities hidden or risk being mistaken for enemy spies. Then the Lusitania is attacked by a German submarine. They just make it off the sinking ship, but her father is discovered and detained. Marta suddenly finds herself alone in enemy land.

To survive, Marta must draw upon a deepwell of bravery she never knew she had. Fortunately, she meets Clare, a young Irish girl who can talk a mile a minute, and her kind family. Believing that Marta is a Dutch refugee, they welcome her into their home. She can't risk letting her new friends know she's actually from Germany—the very nation that the Irish and English are fighting against. But could these people who have shown her nothing but kindness truly be her enemy?

Sweeping from the Irish Sea to a cathedral city in England, this story shows us that friendship, especially in times of war, may be the greatest gift of all.]]>

The invitation to the luxurious Oriental Hotel a mile from Coney Island is unwelcome. But soon it transpires that the hedonism of nearby Coney Island affords Peggy the freedom she has been yearning for, and it’s not long before she finds herself in love with a troubled pier-side artist of humble means, whom the Batternberg patriarchs would surely disapprove of.

Step right up! The Amusement Park is a rich, anecdotal history that begins nine centuries ago with the "pleasure gardens" of Europe and England and ends with the most elaborate modern parks in the world. It's a history told largely through the stories of the colorful, sometimes hedonistic characters who built them,

And, of course, this is a full-throttle celebration of the rides, those marvels of engineering and heart-stopping thrills from an author, Stephen Silverman, whose life-long passion for his subject shines through. The parks and fairs featured include the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, Coney Island, Steeplechase Park, Dreamland, Euclid Beach Park, Cedar Point, Palisades Park, Ferrari World, Dollywood, Sea World, Six Flags Great Adventure, Universal Studios, Disney World and Disneyland, and many more.]]>

The Magic Kingdom 59856900 From one of America's most beloved storytellers--a profound novel about belief, betrayal, and the transformation of one corner of the country.

In 1971, a property speculator named Harley Mann begins recording his life story onto a reel-to-reel machine. Reflecting on his childhood in the early twentieth century, Harley recounts that after his father's sudden death, his family migrated down to Florida's swamplands--mere miles away from what would become Disney World--to join a community of Shakers. Led by Elder John, a generous man with a mysterious past, the colony devoted itself to labor, faith, and charity, rejecting all temptations that lay beyond the property. Though this way of life initially saved Harley and his family from complete ruin, when Harley began falling in love with Sadie Pratt, a consumptive patient living on the grounds, his loyalty to the Shakers and their conservative worldview grew strained and, ultimately, broke. As Harley dictates his story across more than half a century--meditating on youth, Florida's everchanging landscape, and the search for an American utopia--the truth about Sadie, Elder John, and the Shakers comes to light, clarifying the past and present alike.

A dazzling tapestry of love and faith, memory and imagination, The Magic Kingdom questions what it means to look back and accept one's place in history. With an expert eye and stunning vision, Russell Banks delivers a wholly captivating portrait of a man navigating Americana and the passage of time.

With Love, from Cold World 63249737 She has a to-do list a mile long and falling for her coworker isn't on it--yet somehow he's become her top priority in this romantic comedy from the national bestselling author of Love in the Time of Serial Killers.

Lauren Fox is the bookkeeper for Cold World, a tourist destination that's always a winter wonderland despite being located in humid Orlando, Florida. Sure, it's ranked way below any of the trademarked amusement parks and maybe foot traffic could be better. But it's a fun place to work, even if "fun" isn't exactly Lauren's middle name.

Her coworker Asa Williamson, on the other hand, is all about finding ways to enliven his days at Cold World--whether that means organizing the Secret Santa or teasing Lauren. When the owner asks Lauren and Asa to propose something (anything, really) to raise more revenue, their rivalry heats up as they compete to come up with the best idea. But the situation is more dire than they thought, and it might take these polar opposites working together to save the day. If Asa thought Lauren didn't know how to enjoy herself, he's surprised by how much he enjoys spending time together. And if Lauren thought Asa wasn't serious about anything, she's surprised by how seriously he seems to take her.

As Lauren and Asa work to save their beloved wintery spot, they realize the real attraction might be the heat generating between them.]]>

The Night Circus 9361589
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.]]>

I am literally so obsessed with imagery in this novel it has to be some of the best I’ve ever read. The writing along with the creativity of this creepy yet whimsical setting was so thoroughly balanced. One moment I was nervous something eerie would happen and the next I was anxiously awaiting to see what was hidden within the next tent.

I’m blown away and am DEMANDING a screen adaptation because it would soar!!!

The Star of Camp Greene 216052752 Sometimes heroism is found in dreams deferred.

But her hopes are dashed when she contracts Spanish flu while performing at Camp Greene.

While convalescing, Calla inadvertently overhears a sensitive Army secret and is ordered to remain at Camp Greene for the duration of the war while her former mentor and rival steals her tour out from under her. Having no choice but to stay at the camp, she becomes the resident performer and forms attachments to several musician soldiers.

When she falls in love with the man responsible for trapping her at camp, the mission she's sworn to keep secret threatens the men she's come to care for. Calla is forced to decide what her dreams are worth--and if the future she never expected might only be possible if she lets those dreams go.]]>

Do not go into this novel believing you are in for a wartime epic. While there are moments of glitz and glam, specifically during the show/concert sequences, this novel takes its time. You will not see much of the war which isn't a problem considering this is more of look into the home front during WWI. I would have really enjoyed seeing Calla performing on the front lines much like the real life inspiration did. Or perhaps a bit more hardship or action in camp. Personal preference aside, I learned a lot about fashion, entertainment and training camp life during this time.

Unfortunately, I felt as though the main reason our main character finds herself trapped at Camp Greene was a bit flimsy. I felt as though the espionage and secrets could have been handled a bit better, because that would have made this a perfect novel. The reasonings just weren't all that interesting or believable. However, I did like how the main couple were handled in regards to the same issue. Calla and Jesse were believable and I was rooting for them the entire time. Could there have been a few more scenes of them getting to the root of their internal selves? Sure, but it wasn't a huge issue for me. I still felt the tension between them and the struggle.

My only other issue with this novel may be fixed by the time of release. My downloaded version from NetGalley was a mess formatting wise. There were typos, lines that ended out of nowhere, no spaces between paragraphs, no indentation, and chapter breaks went from *** to [[[. There were multiple times that these errors took me out of the narrative or confused me, but I believe it was an error during the transfer to my kindle and not on the author or the publisher.

I really did enjoy the premise of this novel and continue to believe that we need more WWI fiction. If you are looking for a slower paced, war-time book or something about entertainment in the early 20th century than you will love this novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.]]>

First and foremost I really loved the insight and details that went into describing life at Camp Greene as well as the look into entertainment of the time. These details helped paint a stunning setting in Charlotte. Though, I did start the novel believing the plot would move from place to place a bit more than it actually did. This slower pace allowed for each character to have their time in the spotlight and I quite liked every character.

<![CDATA[Their Freefall At Last (Honeywood, #4)]]> 93038511 The hardest part is waiting for the fall.

I am currently in love with, have always been in love with, and will continue to be in love with, my best friend, Bennett Walker Shaw.

In five minutes, my best friend’s bride will greet him in a gorgeous white gown with forever on her lips. Except that bride won’t be me.

Moments like these force you to look at your life a little closer.

At twelve-years-old, he and I promised to always be there for each other. But in our childlike optimism we didn’t understand the frail, tattered string of time. How people change. How families fall apart.

How sometimes we fall apart too.

I could try to pinpoint where our mess started, but I’m not sure where I’d land in our patchwork timeline.

Maybe it’s best to go back to the beginning. Back to when the meaning of love was simply defined by a small town theme park and that beautiful, messy-haired boy.

Their Freefall At Last is a slow burn romance spanning two decades, featuring two childhood best friends and their many years of pining. Enjoy the comforts of a small town theme park, filled with lots of love and steamy tension.]]>

This is the ultimate friends to lovers story and while Bennett and Ruby could be frustrating at times I truly see their relationship as raw and real.

I think my only gripe with the novel is part 4. I felt as though both the main characters changed out of nowhere, Bennett changes are explained but Rubys seem out of the blue with the reason only being to push the plot along to its final stop.

<![CDATA[The Fiction Between Us (Honeywood, #2)]]> 61925449 Some fairytales may be real, but ours is strictly fiction.

I’ve been Queen Bee at our theme park for ten glorious, uncomplicated years. I’m far better at creating fictional magic than real life miracles. So when Landon Arden, my best friend’s twin brother and my old high school bully, starts to work at Honeywood, I’m wishing for some gift from above to fix this mess.

Cue a worse situation.

After Landon falls on stage during one of our shows, the guests mistake him for a character in the park: Ranger Randy.

The problem isn’t when our manager asks him to perform as the bearded, tight tush, short shorts-wearing hero. No, my fairytale comes crashing down when we’re told that Queen Bee and Ranger Randy must appear as a couple.

Fine. Whatever. Ten years ago, my teenage crush for Landon may have been real, but I can fake a happy ending with Ranger Randy. I can sign autographs with him, have his arm around my waist, hold his hand, and kiss him on stage?

I tell myself it’s all for show. We’re just characters in a theme park. And I won’t fall for true love’s kiss, even if I do want to try it one more time

The Fiction Between Us is a stand-alone romantic comedy. This tale features fake dating (with a twist!), a grumpy/sunshine duo with a happy-go-lucky hero, lots of laugh-out-loud theme park shenanigans, and sizzling spice!]]>

My job is providing happiness and smiles at Honeywood Fun Park, and Emory Dawson is the frown our park didn’t ask for.

When our star roller coaster malfunctions with me on board, the manufacturer’s heir and lead engineer, Emory, vows to renovate the attraction. So instead of having a fun summer season as Marketing Manager for Honeywood, I’m now saddled with playing host.

Wonderful.

Emory is the opposite of a good time. He’s the grump that won’t stop grumping, and our arguments escalate quicker than my heart rate after a roller coaster’s fall.

He knows I can see right through his broody gaze and big ideas. Repairing the coaster? More like overhauling his own company’s reputation, regardless of whether it helps our local theme park.

But when our firm handshakes start lingering too long, or when his muscled thighs rest against mine under the table, I’m thrown for a loop.

Most roller coasters are fun, but I’d like to get off this emotional one, please.

All Downhill With You is a stand-alone romantic comedy. This book is an enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine romance with laugh-out-loud theme park moments, a cozy small town, and sizzling spice!]]>

The Fae were definitely interesting here and again, I really like Sabine and her storyline in accordance with book 3 and the overarching plot but yikes the spice and the cliche of stolen memories just took me out of it that was scraping through this for weeks.

Two years into WW2, Britain is feeling her losses; the Nazis have won battles, the Blitz has destroyed cities, and U-boats have cut off the supply of food. In an effort to help housewives with food rationing, a BBC radio program called The Kitchen Front is putting on a cooking contest--and the grand prize is a job as the program's first-ever female co-host. For four very different women, winning the contest presents a crucial chance to change their lives.

For a young widow, it's a chance to pay off her husband's debts and keep a roof over her children's heads. For a kitchen maid, it's a chance to leave servitude and find freedom. For the lady of the manor, it's a chance to escape her wealthy husband's increasingly hostile behavior. And for a trained chef, it's a chance to challenge the men at the top of her profession.

These four women are giving the competition their all--even if that sometimes means bending the rules. But with so much at stake, will the contest that aims to bring the community together serve only to break it apart?]]>

I remember thoroughly enjoying the first half of this novel, but after finally picking it back up I was disappointed to find it a bit boring and stale.

The premise is fantastic and I love how much care was put into sharing all of the recipes. I also like that so many different ideas of womanhood were central to the story.

However I think this story was a bit long. Only one character really gets the ending she deserves and the rest left me wanting more.

A Spy 221467581 310 Hannah Honegger 1964726093 Elora 3
The plot was breakneck pace, which kept me invested but I felt as though parts were missing. Really wish we had a Ben POV. Thought it would have been cool to have this novel from his perspective while A Lady from Mary's.

While the romance was fine in this I did like it in book 1 more. Also thought some of the decisions made by the main characters were head scratching, considering they were supposed to be spies and be smart (the whole thing leading to Mary's capture felt forced and sudden). I also felt that side characters did not get nearly enough time, something that could've been remedied with another POV perhaps.

That ending also felt a bit out of place but I respect the need of wanting the story to fit within history.

I do think that these two books flow seamlessly together and I really liked that. It felt like one big continuing story that could have been one longer novel, but I liked the way it was broken apart into two.

Overall a fine finale to this duology but I much preferred A Lady to A Spy.]]>

I loved the through line of this book and thought the accumulation of Peter and The Manuscript was entirely poetic in its own right. It made me emotional in a way.

Along with making me feel emotions I genuinely learned so much. Whether the references in her work are intentional at all times or just a few times, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Tortured Poets and everything that made them tick. I haven’t read this much poetry since AP Literature class in high school but I may have to return because this was lovely.

This one of the best books I've read this year. The blending of genres was very well done. I loved the characters so very much. This is a step above this author's last novel, with which I had a few issues with. Every issue I had with pacing and characterization of that novel was improved upon. Even for the book's length, I did not find myself skimming once. This novel kept me guessing and on the tips of toes.

Along with just a fantastically unique premise, I also quite enjoyed the romance aspects and some of the heavier themes. When Christian novels shy away from real life struggles and history I tend to become a little apprehensive when continuing because stories don't feel as genuine when they do that. This book proves that you can have some heavier topics and still treat a story with grace and God's love. I loved that about this novel.

Oh yeah, Mary and Gavin?? Favorite couple of the year so far. I was invested start to finish and loved their story.

It's my understanding that the author studied classic literature in college and that definitely comes through in her writing. This is such a nice change of pace and you can feel the lyrical way of words on each page.]]>

Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2) 90202302 “The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity. —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.]]>

The Frozen River 112975658 A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history.

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.

Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.

Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.]]>

Atmosphere 220817728 From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six comes an epic new novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s Space Shuttle program about the extraordinary lengths we go to live and love beyond our limits.

Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easy-going even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warm-hearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.

Thank you for reading this love letter to our female veterans. I hope the story of the Hello Girls gripped you and didn't let go. Please go out there, learn more, and shout the story of Grace Banker, Merle Eagan and the rest of these incredible women from the rooftops.

They deserved to be remembered, and I hope my novel aided that effort, even if in a small way.

Thank you for reading,

This was such a good contemporary romance! I loved the blending of genres and really connected with the characters. I did find myself skimming ever so slightly toward the end after one of the major dramatic plot lines was concluded. There was also less soccer in this one, which the usage of soccer was why the first one was so special to me.

Alright... This was an absolute train wreck about 70% of the time. There is an absolutely fantastic novel in here somewhere, however it gets lost in the absolute insanity of the smut and underdevelopment of side characters.

That being said... I still enjoyed this. I love the twist at the end! I wish a certain character was more developed or we at least saw a stronger connection between Sabine and her betrothed. I filled in the blanks in my head and would skip over the unnecessary and cringy spicy sequences. Only then could I fully enjoy what I was reading.

I still look forward to reading the next book because the stakes have continued to be raised and it continues to be a dark and twisted world that was established in the first book. I'm very much invested despite some of the suspect writing choices.]]>

This was the perfect book for my sports romance/soccer romance mood! As a historical fiction lover I thought it was really neat to incorporate WWII history, though I don't think that concept was entirely realized in the novel. I would have liked a bit more of the connection between couples, perhaps more time with the couple in 1944 or more of an explanation of their connection.

Other than those slight instances of wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed the main couple and am excited to see what Stanmore FC has to offer in the next book!

Maggie and Gray from In This Moment stay at the top for me but this was a close second!

I really enjoyed the historical time periods chosen for this novel, however I think more could have been done in 1927. It was the slower of the 2 timelines and I found myself wanting to return to 1727 often. Maxwell and Caroline are a great couple and I found myself very invested.

I will say that I think the tamer tone and some of the heavy Christian elements hurt this book in the slightest. Some of the darker elements of these time periods had to be watered down and I found myself wanting more from certain situations. I also felt that it was an easy scapegoat for different plot points and character decisions. But I still very much appreciated the message the book was conveying with these Christian themes.

I really do love this series and am excited to see what the author can do in the future to keep it fresh perhaps a male and female perspective with similar timelines?

Much like Alice in Zombieland, which I read in high school, Gena creates a new version of a world we know too well. While I loved what she did with OZ and Hekeldama, I'm not too sure I liked the main character all that much. Hopefully she grows in future books, but Moriah had me rolling my eyes frequently. The world building was cool but the character dialogue and characters themselves did not aid to this world at all. I'm also not sure if this is a YA or NA novel so I'm not sure how much to talk about the romance side of things. I did not believe the main relationship at all. Jasher is wasted on Moriah and I'll die on that hill.

Honestly, I had the same issues with this one as the first. Pacing was ALL over the place, the fantasy elements were rare, and the twists are eye roll inducing at times. The plot just kind of meanders until the last 100 pages. There’s not even time to do much exploring until the last 20 pages which is such a bummer because going into this I was expecting tomb raiding and ancient clues.

I do love Inez and Whit together though, thank god. I honestly really liked the direction they took in this novel and loved how unapologetic both of them are throughout the novel. Yeah, I would not have liked this even a little if Whit and Inez weren’t as strong as they are here.

Overall I think this is a solid duology for lovers of the Mummy a bit YA of course, and messy at times but still solid and worth a read for adventure lovers.

Edit: Why was Inez SO DUMB throughout. Isn’t she supposed to be competent?? Isn’t she sick of being betrayed? Like girl people take advantage of you because you’re STUPID. Ugh that was so annoying. ]]>

I really loved every second of this book until about the 90% mark. I guess I was expecting a bigger climax with higher stakes. I really truly adored the main characters and thought they were wonderfully written. The plot was also thoroughly done. I was just wishing for a few more swoony moments and again a bigger final act but everything else equated to a perfectly cozy fall read.

Jasper Mason
I should have known something wasn’t right the moment I was told someone was coming to see a piece of the land. Our land.
Marlow’s Boys Ranch started as a dream, but easily became reality. That reality was as tranquil and peaceful as a sunset.
Until she got out of the car.
Mia Evans, as I live and breathe. It’s been fourteen years since I’ve seen her, and not a day has passed that I haven’t thought of her, or wished things could be different.
And now she’s here to take more than just a tiny slice of land. She’s the mom of one of our own.
The signs were there, I should have seen it. Maybe I didn’t want to. But now, I can’t have a moment of peace with her constantly around, winning over every person here.
How will I ever survive her leaving for a second time?
I can’t. I won’t. I have to keep her at arm’s length until she leaves. Then, and only then, can I go back to my peaceful life. Just the way I like it.

Mia Evans
I’m finally free of the disaster of my marriage, and ready to find the freedom for my son and myself. Question is, at what cost?
Before I dropped my boy off ten months ago, I never thought I’d be back here. It’s been since the summer before freshman year of college. The summer I fell in love. And the summer I got my heart broken for the first time.
My son is safe, and that’s all that matters to me. At least, I thought so.
When I open the car door, I know what I’ll find. I know Jasper works here and I know he’s been providing a roof over my son’s head with no explanation.
What I don’t know. . . is how I will react to being near him again after all this time. Opening up our past is the last thing I need. Though my heart is saying differently.
Bring Me Home is all about love, heartbreak, healing, and most importantly, second chances.

Carry Me Away 149737030 0 Ashley Weston Elora 5 five-star-reads
I cannot tell you how refreshing it was to read a novel with such a grounded story with characters that felt real. Harper and Everette act exactly how people dealing with trauma would act. Their dialog pieces are beautiful and I have absolutely fallen in love with them and how they deal with their struggles.

Was it a slow burn? Yes the slowest burn, but I was never bored! I was so content reading about their history together and learning about their own inner demons. When I hit the point in the novel that the relationship happens I was hooked further. What a stunning couple, I'm so intrigued as to how Weston was able to conjure them.

For whatever reason this novel gave me a nostalgic feeling. The story meandered, but not in a boring way. I was simply taken to another place and fell in love with it.

Reading this novel feels like listening to the Evermore album for the first time again. These characters gave me the same fuzzy feeling inside. Their hurt, triumphs dynamics and struggles are things that will stick with me.

My only problem with the novel is that I was not the biggest fan of how the flashbacks and changing of POV's were handled. I felt as though they were inconsistent at times. But no matter it did no detriment to the story other than made me pay more attention at the transitions.

I really truly ADORED this novel and will anxiously await to see what Weston does next.]]>

But they have also come to Antica for another purpose: to seek healing at the famed Torre Cesme for the wounds Chaol received in Rifthold.

Wildfire (Maple Hills, #2) 101145836
Maple Hills students Russ Callaghan and Aurora Roberts cross paths at a party celebrating the end of the academic year, where a drinking game results in them having a passionate one-night stand. Never one to overstay her welcome (or expect much from a man), Aurora slips away before Russ even has the chance to ask for her full name.

Imagine their surprise when they bump into each other on the first day of the summer camp where they are both counselors, hoping to escape their complicated home lives by spending the summer working. Russ hopes if he gets far enough away from Maple Hills, he can avoid dealing with the repercussions of his father’s gambling addiction, while Aurora is tired of craving attention from everyone around her, and wants to go back to the last place she truly felt at home.

Russ knows breaking the camp’s strict “no staff fraternizing rule will have him heading back to Maple Hills before the summer is over, but unfortunately for him, Aurora has never been very good at caring about the rules. Will the two learn to peacefully coexist? Or did their one night together start a fire they can’t put out?]]>

"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend."

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.]]>

Five years ago, on the night of our high school graduation, I handed Jordan my heart, and he handed me a country song's worth of heartbreak and rejection.

Now, after returning to my hometown for an internship, I find that despite my delusional fantasies, Jordan’s feelings remain the same. I’m still buddy-buddy Paige. The only thing that’s changed is that my friend-zone membershiphas been upgraded to platinum level.

But just as I’m making Adele’s “Someone Like You my personal anthem, my life gets a miraculous facelift—I get a chance at my dream job and a potential new boyfriend all in one week. Sounds like the perfect way to get over Jordan, right?

Wrong.

Jordan’s starting to act well, strange. I don’t know if I’m reading into things or if Jordan’s getting friendlier. Either way, he’s not just giving me butterflies these days—he’s constructing an entire exhibit with every longing look and lingering touch.

Unfortunately, that’s when I know I have to move on. Because if history taught me anything, it’s that when things heat up between us, I’m bound to get burned.

This is a friends-to-lovers romantic comedy filled with playful banter, endearing characters, and swoony moments that will make your heart squeal with happiness! It’s a closed-door romance book with all the chemistry and without any language or explicit scenes (kissing only).]]>

As they wage an office war, Logan discovers Addie’s secret connection to Scotland: a handful of faded Polaroids of her late mother. Hoping for a truce, he creates a private tour to the places in the pictures to help Addie find closure and appreciate the enchantment in less-traveled destinations, never expecting the off-limits attraction sparking between them. But Addie’s contract is almost up, and magic won’t pay the bills. They can’t afford distractions, but how can Addie do her job if she hasn’t explored all Scotland—and Logan—have to offer?]]>

This book was so cozy, almost to the point of boredom. Some of that may be my fault as I chose to read this in the heat of summer and it is clearly a misty fall morning type of book. I liked a lot about this novel including the setting, characters and the history but I think that it dragged too much in too many places. These spots that dragged caused me to put it down for weeks at a time. Well written and cozy but just not for me in the summertime I suppose.
