This is one of the best books I have honestly ever read. It’s suspenseful and heartbreaking and powerful. I quite literally had to force myself to put it down to get myself to work. Even setting aside the plot, Ace of Spades brilliantly shows the many differences and many similarities in the lives of a Black, queer, rich girl with Jimmy Choo heels, and a Black, queer, scholarship kid who has to do some questionable things to help his mom make ends meet.
I felt angry, sad, and betrayed right along with the protagonists. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. Of course, I do love the rare happy ending for sapphic couples, but the story itself felt pretty rushed and was kind of hard to follow. The dialogue was a lot more formal than I’ve ever heard anyone actually speak in real life. I love the characters of Lochlan and Vanessa, though, and I love the fanfic-esque concept.
