Two Desperados: Stories 45314243
These eighteen stories play a few games with traditional short story form, but by and large they remain in the realism camp—yet it is realism tweaked or enlivened with an occasional sprinkle of magic or a small electric zap. In length they range from a few words to many pages, from the brief text of a bumper sticker to a full-scale novella. In the words of Apuleius, author of The Golden Ass : “Reader! Pay attention! You’re going to enjoy yourself!”]]>

Tom is sixteen when his younger sister, Jessie, vanishes before his eyes. Her loss, coming after an accident that left him in a wheelchair, causes his family to disintegrate.

But Tom learns that Jessie’s disappearance was not an isolated event. Long ago, wizards created a rift that shifted Earth’s once-abundant magic to a separate world called Thera. Now, a terrible war rages there: some wizards strive to reunite the worlds, while others believe doing so would destroy both spheres. Both sides are stealing children with magical talent, like Jessie and Tom, to aid their cause.

Desperate to bring Jessie back, Tom allows himself to be changed into a centaur so he can cross to Thera. Once there, he learns that he and his sister are pawns in the wizards ongoing war. Rather than be manipulated, Tom and Jessie wage their own battles to save both worlds and return home.]]>

The Irish Cinderlad 541722 With the help of his only friend, a magical bull, he defeats a giant, slays a dragon, and rescues a princess. But before she can thank him, Becan disappears, leaving behind him one of his enormous boots. The princess scours the kingdom for the owner of the giant boot. Will Becan's feet give him away? And what will his fate be if they do?
Folklorist Shirley Climo retells an age-old Irish tale that is an unusual twist on the popular Cinderella story. Just like his female counterpart, Becan has a mean stepmother and stepsisters. Unlike Cinderella, Becan has large feet and a magical bull for a fairy godmother. He defeats a sword-swinging giant, slays a fire-breathing dragon, and rescues a princess. But before the princess can thank him, he runs off, leaving her with only an enormous boot to aid her in the search for her rescuer. And, as in all Cinderella stories, true love prevails.]]>

Why? The Catholic Church dispatches a priest, assisted by a nun and a former seminary student who have extensive knowledge of angels to try and determine what happened. The trail leads to an earlier angel visitation having an unexpected tie to the incident in Los Angeles. <![CDATA[A Cradle Song (Songs of Experience)]]> 61129630 "Sleep, sleep, beauty bright,
Dreaming in the joys of night;
Sleep, sleep; in thy sleep

A Cradle Song is a short poem by William Blake that was originally published in 1794 within Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1794). Blake previously wrote Songs of Innocence in 1789 as a contrary to the Songs of Experience, and later published them both together in juxtaposition.

Two different versions of the poem, both named "A Cradle Song", appear in Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience.

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake's work is today considered seminal and significant in the history of both poetry and the visual arts.]]>

Cuttlefish 19066179
The year is 1976, and the British Empire still spans the globe. Coal drives the world, and the smog of it hangs thick over the canals of London.

Clara Calland is on the run. Hunted, along with her scientist mother, by Menshevik spies and Imperial soldiers, they flee Ireland for London. They must escape airships, treachery and capture. Under flooded London's canals they join the rebels who live in the dank tunnels there.

Tim Barnabas is one of the under people, born to the secret town of drowned London, place of anti-imperialist republicans and Irish rebels, part of the Liberty - the people who would see a return to older values and free elections. Seeing no further than his next meal, Tim has hired on as a submariner on the Cuttlefish, a coal fired submarine that runs smuggled cargoes beneath the steamship patrols, to the fortress America and beyond.

When the ravening Imperial soldiery comes, Clara and her mother are forced to flee aboard the Cuttlefish. Hunted like beasts, the submarine and her crew must undertake a desperate voyage across the world, from the Faeroes to the Caribbean and finally across the Pacific to find safety. But only Clara and Tim Barnabas can steer them past treachery and disaster, to freedom in Westralia. Carried with them--a lost scientific secret that threatens the very heart of Imperial power.

No Bullet Got Me Yet 229666064 The incredible story of the most decorated chaplain in US military history and his path to sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

Father Emil Kapaun, a humble priest, went far beyond the call of duty during World War II and the Korean War. Often found with the combat medics on the front lines, unarmed, ministering to the wounded, and known for his intense devotion to the soldiers whom he called “my boys, Kapaun became the most decorated chaplain in US military history, awarded a Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross and the Legion of Merit.

But Father Kapaun’s leadership, bravery and selflessness don't end there. When the story of human history is over, evil, death, darkness—they don’t get the final word. It was Father Kapaun’s love for God that gave him the courage to lay down his life for his friends and for his country.

Writer John Stansifer has spent years interviewing veterans and ex-POWs. Coupled with other interviews or self-published war experiences, as well as material from the National Archives and rare access to thousands of unseen documents, No Bullet Got Me Yet unveils the compelling history of the life of Father Kapaun as related by his friends, family and fellow soldiers, as well as in his own words from the numerous letters he wrote from the 1930s all the way to the battlefields of the Korean War.

<![CDATA[Riding with Reagan: From the White House to the Ranch]]> 216866233
John Barletta was a Vietnam veteran and Secret Service agent who spent over a decade with the Reagans, poised to give his own life at any moment to save the 40th president of the United States. His superior riding skills made Barletta the perfect choice to protect Reagan during his frequent visits to the ranch. Over time, he got to know Reagan as few others did. But what did these two men talk about during their long solitary hours on horseback--and how did they become the unlikeliest of friends and confidants?

In Riding With Reagan, John Barletta shares his one-of-a-kind memories of the President, painting a picture of a relaxed Reagan at his very best. Through his eyes, we see a rugged man who thrived outdoors, deeply loved his wife and children, and was a prankster at heart. Barletta recalls watching Reagan take pleasure in clearing the brush from the grounds, spending quiet time with Nancy, and entertaining world figures like Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth, both of whom were surprised by the spare simplicity of the Reagan ranch.

Barletta also recalls the sad times: watching a once-robust Reagan fade into the dark shadows of Alzheimer's disease, and the painful moment when he had to tell the former president that his days of horseback riding had come to an end.

Poignant and candid, Riding With Reagan is an intimate portrait of the man who remains one of the most popular presidents in our nation's history. A stirring ode to friendship, brotherhood, and the great outdoors, it celebrates a true hero whose life and spirit are the embodiment of what it means to be an American.]]>

For centuries, a grim anti-human outlook has taken holdofthepublic imagination, teaching us all to view ourselves as random productsofa cruel and uncaring natural world. Today, from apocalyptic environmentalism to twisted eugenics and dystopian bionic augmentation, movements are rising aroundtheworld to dispense with humanity or subordinate it to a pitiless mechanical logic. For many, it has come to seem as ifthehuman spirit is obsolete, religious faith is illusory, and mankind is destined to be extinguished or surpassed. <![CDATA[Custer at Gettysburg: A New Look at George Armstrong Custer versus Jeb Stuart in the Battle’s Climactic Cavalry Charges]]> 52618951
On the eve of the Battle of Gettysburg, only twenty-three years old and barely two years removed from being the goat of his West Point class, Custer received promotion to brigadier general and command his first direct field command of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade, the “Wolverines. Now that he held general rank, Custer felt comfortable wearing the distinctive, some said gaudy, uniform that helped skyrocket him into fame and legend. However flashy he may have been in style, Custer did not disappoint his superiors, who promoted him in a search for more aggressive cavalry officers. At approximately noon on July 3, 1863, Custer and his men heard enemy cannon fire: Stuart’s signal to Lee that he was ready for action. Thus began the melee that was East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg. Much back and forth preceded Custer’s career-defining action. An hour or two into the battle, after many of his cavalrymen had been reduced to hand-to-hand infantry-style fighting, Custer ordered a charge of one of his regiments and led it into action himself, screaming one of the battle’s most famous lines: “Come on, you Wolverines! Around three o’clock, Stuart mounted a final charge, which mowed down Union cavalry until it ran into Custer’s Wolverines, who stood firm, with Custer wielding a sword at their head, and broke the Confederates last attack.

In a book combining two popular subjects, Tucker recounts the story of Custer at Gettysburg with verve, shows how the Custer legend was born on the fields of the war’s most famous battle, and offers eye-opening new perspectives on Gettysburg’s overlooked cavalry battle.]]>

A Miller's Life 228642790
Through the eyes of a devoted father, a mother who teaches through stories, and children eager to prove themselves, a season of growth unfolds. The boys spend their days learning the trade, each drawn to different aspects of the work—the steady precision of milling, the challenge of keeping up with their father’s expectations, and the ever-present temptation to test their own limits. Meanwhile, their sister finds her own quiet lessons in the rhythm of home, watching as her mother weaves wisdom into each task, guiding her with gentle hands and parables that linger long after the day’s work is done.

But the summer holds more than just the daily labor of the mill. A sudden illness in the community brings everything to a halt, forcing difficult choices and reminding them all of the fragility of life. As the last apples of the season roll in and the year turns toward autumn, the family must navigate not just the changes in their work, but the deeper truths about resilience, faith, and what it truly means to build something that lasts. Rich with the texture of Amish life and the quiet depth of a world rooted in tradition, this story is a testament to the enduring power of family, hard work, and the lessons passed down through generations.]]>

She said no! to British goods, determined to rely on her resourcefulness and ingenuity to get by. And when British troops continued to threaten the lives of her family and community, she assembled and led the minute women of Pepperell to break free of tradition. With his 95 Theses, Luther proposed a debate on the subject, but ultimately, he was excommunicated and the Protestant Reformation began. <![CDATA[The Restless Wave: A Novel of the United States Navy]]> 205064709 From the New York Times bestselling former NATO commander comes a riveting historical novel that charts the coming-of-age of a gifted but immature young naval officer as he is tested in the crucible of World War II in the Pacific
Scott Bradley James arrives in Annapolis, Maryland, as a plebe in the class of 1941 without a terribly good idea why he wants to be a naval officer, other than that his father was a sailor, and he wants to see the world, whatever that means. Scott and his roommate become fast friends, and, after surviving scrapes of their own making, the two fetch up at Pearl Harbor. War is brewing, and their class has graduated early. They have been sent to battle stations.Admiral James Stavridis is an acclaimed novelist, a decorated military leader, and a great student of military history. He draws on it all to capture the experience of being storm-tossed by the bloody first years of the Second World War. Scott Bradley James is a talented young officer, but he has a lot to learn. And war will have a lot to teach him.

The Restless Wave offers a gripping account of the U.S. Navy’s astonishing progress through the first three years of the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor through to Midway, Guadalcanal, and the Coral Sea. A story of character under pressure in the harshest of proving grounds, it is written with careful fidelity to the truths of war that have made sea stories essential to the art of storytelling since Odysseus.]]>

<![CDATA[The Convergence of the Twain (Illustrated): Lines On The Loss of the Titanic (Top 100 Poems Of All Time Book 98)]]> 24861084 In a solitude of the sea
Deep from human vanity,
And the Pride of Life that planned her, stilly couches she.

#98 in the Top 100 Poems of All Time: Thomas Hardy’s terse elegy for The Titanic - The Convergence of the Twain.

The poem describes the sinking of the ocean liner Titanic on 15 April 1912. Convergence consists of eleven stanzas (I to XI) of three lines each, following the AAA rhyme pattern. The poem's major ideas concern the vessel, its state, and symbolic significance two years after the collision, and a speculation on how the iceberg came to converge with the ship. Hardy is very interested in affiliating the growth and fate of the iceberg and ship through the deification of nature and time. The first five stanzas of the poem concern the submerged ship itself, while the last six discuss its fate while afloat.

Hardy first published The Convergence of the Twain in the program printed for a “Dramatic and Operatic Matineé in Aid of the ‘Titanic Disaster Fund, held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on May 14, 1912 (at two o’clock, to be precise). In fact, he served as a member of the committee that organized the event. Titanic had, of course, sunk one month earlier on April 15. Convergence next appeared in The Fortnightly Review in June. It was then printed in a special limited edition—prepared by the American bibliophile & author George Barr McCutcheon, as Hardy’s editor, Samuel Hynes, notes—in August 1912. Hardy collected the poem in his 1914 volume Satires of Circumstance, Lyrics and Reveries.

The sniper requested permission to fire. Waltz refused, insisting on restraint. The child was spared, and the position was held. Later that same day, Waltz visited a nearby Afghan village and discovered the Taliban had hanged a boy in front of his family—because the child wasn't willing to fight for them.Restraint is a trait common to Green Berets, but rare on the battlefield—and even rarer in today's national political discourse.Today, Mike Waltz is a retired Colonel and a U.S. Representative from Florida, the first Green Beret ever to be elected to Congress. Patriot: A Memoir 210943348
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come.

In vivid, page-turning detail, including never-before-seen correspondence from prison, Navalny recounts, among other things, his political career, the many attempts on his life, and the lives of the people closest to him, and the relentless campaign he and his team waged against an increasingly dictatorial regime.

Written with the passion, wit, candor, and bravery for which he was justly acclaimed, Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

“This book is a testament not only to Alexei’s life, but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorship—a fight he gave everything for, including his life. Through its pages, readers will come to know the man I loved deeply—a man of profound integrity and unyielding courage. Sharing his story will not only honor his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter. —Yulia Navalnaya]]>

<![CDATA[Brigid's Cloak: An Ancient Irish Story]]> 1142348 the thatch from the roof. But when the baby gave her first cry, the
wind shushed to a whisper and the stars began to sing.

Brigid's Cloak retells an ancient tale about one of Ireland's most beloved saints. On the day she is born Brigid receives a brilliant blue cloak from a mysterious Druid. Years later, the young girl still wears the now tattered but beloved cloak while she tends her sheep. Is it her imagination that suddenly takes her to an unfamiliar land? Or is it something far greater that leads Brigid to a crowded inn in a town called Bethlehem?

Bryce Milligan's eloquently told story about Brigid is a moving tale of compassion and wonder. Beautifully illustrated by Helen Cann, Brigid's Cloak sparkles with the timelessness of legend and the transcending power of faith.]]>

<![CDATA[The Eye of Nefertiti (Pharaoh's Cat #2)]]> 33225257 Now a New Yorker, the Pharaoh’s cat--the ancient Egyptian feline with human powers--travels back in time to free Egypt’s legendary Queen Nefertiti from a horrific curse, discovering firsthand why her mummy has never been found and her famous bust is missing one eye.

As in the first Pharaoh’s cat novel, the cat is quick-witted, wisecracking narrator as well as free-spirited, ever-curious protagonist, and the story he tells is an exotic, imaginative, spell-binding tragicomedy. The Eye of Nefertiti also interweaves feline and human, past and present, natural and supernatural. It too contains numerous surprises, twists and turns, intriguing characters, both human and animal, fascinating revelations about ancient Egyptian history and culture. Added to all this is an ingenious use of the Tarot and Italian opera.

The cat is living happily in New York City with the High Priest, Elena, daughter of an Egyptologist, and their infant son, the cat’s beloved Pharaoh reincarnated, when the supernatural gradually intrudes in the form of phantasms, the plot of an Italian opera, a Tarot card reading, and an unexpected summons to present-day Bath Spa disguised as an opportunity for Elena.

She and the little Pharaoh travel conventionally while the cat and the High Priest take the little boat they use for time travel and are diverted to ancient Stonehenge for a brief stop-over. The figure at the center of their encounter with the Druids has been prefigured in the cat’s phantasms, the Italian opera, and the Tarot reading, all his uncanny experiences being in accord with a single design.

Reunited with Elena and the infant Pharaoh in Bath, the cat and the High Priest discover a secret tomb below the Georgian house where they are staying, and are soon impelled to journey to ancient Egypt in the time of Queen Nefertiti to save her from a horrific curse. They become separated as they search for Nefertiti and the cat has several adventures before finding her on his own.

He undertakes an ingenious deception to stay close to her without revealing his identity. Being so close, he falls in love with her. He succeeds in lifting the horrific curse at great cost to himself. Despite his love, he surrenders Nefertiti to history and, mourning his loss, descends into a psychological abyss so deep only the Pharaoh can save him.

Maria Luisa Lang was born in Rome and lives in New York City. She has an art degree and is an amateur Egyptologist. The Pharaoh's Cat is her first novel, The Eye of Nefertiti her second.]]>
