After I power read my way through this book, I set it down and the first image to pop into my head was a scene from " I Claudius " where John Hurt as Caligula- the mad and twisted Caligula says in utter shock, " People are just awful. "

Interesting read because know matter how you read it- end to start middle to start jump around you got the story. I guess that's the case because much like the Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, the House is the main character and it's needs and wants drive the story forward. In this story the figure that drives the story is nebulous and that made this not just a read, it made it an experience too.

I did enjoy this book- but I dId feel that the Chapter about the history of haunted houses ( Home Is Where The Hearse Is) was EXCEPTIONAL.

Hands down it was more informative and enjoyable then a documentary I recently saw on Netflix on the subject.

A magnificent puzzle for the reader to solve- I can understand why some readers were put off by that. It doesn't spoon-feed you 'the answer'. If you miss one important detail in this plot you will be as lost as the main character.

The story Pages from a Young Girl's Journal won Aickman the World Fantasy Award in 1975. It was originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1973 before appearing in this collection.

Cold Hand in Mine stands as one of Aickman's best collections and contains eight stories that show off his powers as a 'strange story' writer to the full, being more ambiguous than standard ghost stories. Throughout the stories the reader is introduced to a variety of characters, from a man who spends the night in a Hospice to a German aristocrat and a woman who sees an image of her own soul. There is also a nod to the conventional vampire story (Pages from a Young Girl's Journal) but all the stories remain unconventional and inconclusive, which perhaps makes them all the more startling and intriguing.
