The Friends of Eddie Coyle 8562108 Time), with a new introduction by Dennis Lehane

George V. Higgins's seminal crime novel is a down-and-dirty tale of thieves, mobsters, and cops on the mean streets of Boston. When small-time gunrunner Eddie Coyle is convicted on a felony, he's looking at three years in the pen--that is, unless he sells out one of his big-fish clients to the DA. But which of the many hoods, gunmen, and executioners whom he calls his friends should he send up the river? Told almost entirely in crackling dialogue by a vivid cast of lowlifes and detectives, The Friends of Eddie Coyle is one of the greatest crime novels ever written.

“The best crime novel ever written--makes The Maltese Falcon read like Nancy Drew.” -- Elmore Leonard]]>
193 George V. Higgins 1429931981 Christopher 5 2018, fiction, noir “This life’s hard, but it’s harder if you’re stupid.”

Hard-boiled detectives, low lighting, and cigar smoke are what come to mind for many when they hear 'noir'. In my view, noir doesn't require them though. What defines noir for me is tragedy. But not in the traditional Greek Tragedy sense where our character falls from great heights, with potentially a really nice soliloquy before their fall. No, in noir we still have the fall... but it's typically a fall from a curb. Perhaps into the open trunk of a car. Often without any last words at all, clever or otherwise.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle is quintessential noir. This is a story about a bad man who sells guns to other bad men; but honestly, the plot doesn't matter. There is no grand conspiracy, no huge twists. Just people living their lives and trying to screw over whomever they need to in order to survive.

This noir is all about style, while not actually presenting anything that would be labeled as stylish. After all, these are local gun runners, beat cops, and bartenders, not exactly the glamorous portions of Boston. To capture the correct feel, this novel goes all in on dialogue. Like, all in. Probably 80% of this book is people talking. You might get a couple of sentences of scene setup, but only if absolutely required. For the most part, this book is all people talking about other people, sometimes while doing stuff to move the plot along. I know most of you just said "What the crap? No;" but it's really good. It's so good. It's also a bit confusing from time to time while you try to recall who is who, but it's fine for the most part. Look, don't worry about it. Just grab a scotch, go along for the ride, and be thankful that you aren't any of these characters.]]>

Lost Boy 33383807 From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is…

There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan’s first—and favorite—lost boy to his greatest enemy.
?
Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock—the kinds of playthings that bite.

Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.]]>

<![CDATA[The Camelot Shadow (Camelot Shadow, #1)]]> 24020362 "A chance to save her. Improbably, impossibly, inconceivably."

Lord Alfred Fitzwilliam spends each day in much the same way: caring for his terminally ill wife and trying to lose himself in the dusty tomes that fill his library. Everything changes when he receives a visit from a man representing a clandestine organization operating with the backing of Queen Victoria herself. The group seeks his aid in finding an Arthurian artifact that, legend holds, can cure its bearer of any wound or disease.

Skeptical but desperate to help his wife, Alfred is convinced that the fabled item might actually exist after witnessing a seemingly impossible display of power by the organization's leader, James Nigel. He decides to pursue the treasure, accompanied by an eccentric scholar, a deadly druid, and his best friend, a sardonic bookseller who is far more than he seems. As he follows an arcane trail of clues from the gas-lit streets of London to the wilds of Scotland and deep into ancient catacombs in Italy, Alfred becomes enmeshed in a web of hidden agendas, secret societies, and ancient enchantments. Along the way, he learns a dark secret about Nigel's past—and the true power of the artifact he seeks.

Steeped in a compelling mythology and filled with unexpected twists, The Camelot Shadow will leave readers stunned, breathless, and wrestling with an impossible question: what do you do with an object that has the power to both save the world and destroy it?

The Camelot Shadow is a historical fiction mystery adventure fantasy... thing. Fantasy in that magic is real (though only known to secret societies and the like). Mystery in that they are trying to find something lost to history and legend. Threat at every turn brings adventure, and lots of detail about (I think) the late 1800s gives us historical fiction. Weave in a re-imagining of Arthurian legend and you have this book. Well, and scotch. A lot of scotch.

As a few of my GR friends know, I've had a terrible time with books lately. Mostly in that the books I am reading are well done, but I simply do not like them. So I was elated to find that this one is well written, and I enjoyed it. I didn't want to throw it across the room a single time, which might not sound like a high bar, but trust me, I've wanted to throw a lot of books lately. Perhaps I am just more critical as I age.

One thing I found especially good is that I enjoyed reading about all of the characters. There are no characters like Bran (from ASoIaF) where you want to skip any chapter he happens to be in (He is boring. It is known). There's no Katniss off moping in a closet somewhere. You won't want to be best friends with some of them, but skimming a few pages forward because a character entered a scene never crossed my mind.

This is a fairly complex story with dense enough prose to slow you down as you read. I saw a person or two comment on the word choices, and while I never reached for a dictionary for a meaning, I did go look up 'indefatigable' to see if that was real or just some prefixes that happened to make sense. ;)

That being said, the dialogue is excellent, and often funny. I didn't find myself rereading pages or anything. It's not confusing. It just has words like 'indefatigable' in the fight scenes.

Ultimately though, this quest for a magic artifact is really about one man, who had given up all hope, desperately clinging to the impossible chance that his wife can be saved.

The author saw this sitting on my to-read shelf and sent me a note asking if I wanted a copy to review. As we are here talking, I would hope my reply is obvious.

This starts really really well, and then seems to fall apart during the last third. I might do a full fledged review later, but for now I just don't care enough. I'll read the blurb and some reviews of the next one, but this one didn't have enough hitman in it considering its lead character is a frikkin hitman, and didn't have enough mystery in it considering how noir the tone is.

192 Marjorie M. Liu 1632157098 Christopher 5 Are you scared of me?

... Yes.

We have that much in common. I'm scared of me, too.

Monstress... can I take an aside before we even start? Is that a thing? How great is this title? Monstrous Mistress. It describes our lead. It describes the leader of the human society. It describes the leader of the Arcanic society. It describes half a dozen other characters. And all in slightly different ways. It's so good.

Monstress is about Maika Halfwolf, a teenage half-wolf (? they don't explain if that's literal or not, but she isn't human at the least) who lost an arm in the war. She also lost her mother, and now she is after answers... about something. Look, it's complicated. Or mysterious... something. Anyway, the way she choses to get these answers is to get caught and sold back into slavery. Yes, back into slavery. She was enslaved before when she was younger, where she met her best friend, Tupa. So the first page of the first issue opens with a naked teenager with one arm being sold at auction. Which sets the tone for the whole series.

It's a dark steampunk/asian/fantasy world full of violence and racists and survivors just trying to maintain the peace, lest the world be torn anew. There are a stack of themes in the series, which I don't usually get into talking about with comics, but they're pretty important here, though I don't find them preachy. I wouldn't call racism the dominate theme, but it is certainly present, from both sides of the war. Even our lead dabbles.

Everyone knows your kind are thieves.

Ah, yes, the casual bigotry of fools.

But the dominate theme is about how survivors find the inner strength to continue. About how someone monstrous (literally) conquers her own demons (again, literally), and what that does to her and her friends. All wrapped in the above setting with some supernatural thrown in because this is still a fantasy story.

The priests say they're the ghosts of dead gods. But I don't believe they're ghosts.

All of this is about what makes the series compelling, but not what's going to make a reader of Batman or X-Men pick it up. Well, our lead is on a mission to learn things that people would rather she not know, and for unknown reasons has a lot of people trying to kill her along the way. She is badass, and quickly earns her monster descriptor in all senses of the word. There is a lot of violence, and a lot of action. If the capes lovers aren't fans, it won't be due to lack of action. It'll be that it's too Gaiman-esque, most likely.

She's even more trouble than Moriko.

I doubt that.

Yes. I doubted, too. And then I was dead.

There is some levity along the way, and some much needed innocence in the form of Kippa, a fox girl, who escapes slavery when Maika makes her move. She's weak, and brave, and scared, and loyal. She's that reminder of how the world should be, and a means to show the reader that Maika is just as scary as she seems, even to her new friends.

He's an Arcanic, miss. He must be safe.

Am I safe, little fox?

I think you try to be. You're just not very good at it.

And there's a whole race of talking cats, which is always awesome.

I just finished that and realized while proofreading that I don't even mention the art. It's so good. Most of you will scoff that this one, and I won't screencapture it because it's pretty spoiler heavy, but there are three panels where two people are talking and Kippa is taking something from one to give to the other. They are very stoic, and she is terrified of the whole process. In these three panels, Kippa is slighly brighter than normal. The literal colors in the panels. It does a great job of separating out her action, which is the only action happening, from the speakers, who are surrounding her, but not talking to her. It's subtle. And it's great. And some of you are going to claim that looking at visual designs all day is making me see things that aren't there. Possible that it isn't intentional and is just down to her wearing brighter clothes than the other two, and a slightly odd perspective, and some possible fog that only appears for this scene. But she doesn't stand out like that in the other panels on the same page... so I'm going with it.

TL;DR; That's what the stars are for. Lazy people. Are you new here?

<![CDATA[The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle]]> 35967101 A brilliantly original high concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception, by way of Agatha Christie and Black Mirror.

'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.'

It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.

But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath...

Also titled as The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.]]>

I don't want to tell you anything about this book beyond the most basics of basics. But you're reading a review, so I imagine I should tell you something beyond "go read this". Fine. Depending on what blurb you read, I think I can still tell you less plot than it does.

You're reading reviews, so there are two things you need to know by the end of it. "Why should I be interested in this?" and "Is it any good?"

Why should I be interested in this?

1) It's a mystery/thriller about solving a murder.
2) It involves a time loop. Our MC relives the same day multiple times as he attempts to solve a murder that happens at the end of that day.
3) Each day, our MC inhabits a different person and lives the day as that person.

Ok, that sounds cool... it is good?

It's a 500 page book I read in a day.

So that's a 'yes'.

How lost do you have to be to let the devil lead you home?

I don't even know what to tell you. This is Stuart Turton's debut novel, but you wouldn't know it. The writing is excellent. The plotting is excellent. The characters are excellent, in a "I want to punch some of them and hug others" sort of way. There are enough twists and turns so that even when you think you have things figured out, you'll manage to be wrong... but also right. Look, it's complicated.

And that's going to be a sore point for some people. There are a few reviews that complain about being confused. I don't much know what to say about that. The beginning of the book is very confusing, but it's supposed to be because our MC has zero idea what is going on at first. I never felt like I missed anything, only that I was adding on questions that I was sure would be answered in due time. Others apparently held onto that confusion the entire novel. So I'll give you that. The plot is complicated, the characters all have secrets, and they aren't exactly apt to spill them before our MC. But that complication is a selling point, not a negative. There are a lot of sinister plots underfoot at Blackheath. Life is complicated, and I appreciate a book that doesn't treat me as if I can only hold one thought in my head at a time.

I never felt the need to go back and reread a section, though I did flip back to the opening pages which show a character list a couple of times to remind myself who exactly a character was. "Wait, is Peter the father or the son?" That sort of thing. But I'm terrible with names.

So if the plot and characters and twists and general mystery are great, what put me off while reading it? The primary thing that bothered me, and this is a common complaint I have with books, so it's probably just my thing, is that our MC is a little slow. More than once I told my book to stop being stupid. Out loud. Sometimes it is good that I live alone. Our MC is reliving the same day through multiple people, so he doesn't want to change certain things so it doesn't screw with what he already knows. That's fine. But he does want to know if he can change things. Also fine. So then he does something asinine which would have instead been a wonderful thing to change. It wasn't important. It was just stupid. I know that's vague, but the point is that our MC doesn't always go with his own interests, even immediately after declaring those interests to himself. The book gives a mostly excellent reason for this in that the 'hosts' whose bodies he is living in are still there. Their instincts and addictions still drive the body, so sometimes he does what they would do, not what he should do. It's great for the most part. I think for me the issue was that the portions where he inhabits the people with the worst character flaws drag on too long. And there are a couple of those back to back.

"People are stupid" is my personal pet peeve though, so I doubt you will have the same level of annoyance that I did. And you see that ultimately I didn't remove stars for it. I mean, I didn't even stop reading for the day over it. But "time loop mystery" is on my list of "greatest things ever", so I doubt you will have the same level of joy that I had in that aspect either. So in the end, who knows? This is a very well written murder mystery set in a time loop. If that's your thing, you honestly don't have a lot of options, so certainly give The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle a go.

Harrison Bergeron 10176119 "The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way..."

It is the year 2081. Because of Amendments 211, 212 and 213 to the Constitution, every American is fully equal, meaning that no one is stupider, uglier, weaker, or slower than anyone else. The Handicapper General and a team of agents ensure that the laws of equality are enforced.

One April, fourteen-year-old Harrison Bergeron is taken away from his parents, George and Hazel, by the government and to a place unknown. But what happens in the aftermath will challenge the status quo and inspire his peers about the hidden potential within one's own individuality.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (1922–2007) was an American novelist, satirist, and most recently, graphic artist. He was born in Indianapolis, later the setting for many of his novels. His experiences as an advance scout in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII, and in particular his witnessing of the bombing of Dresden, Germany whilst a prisoner of war, would inform much of his work. The novelist is best known for works blending satire, black comedy and science fiction, such as 'Slaughterhouse-Five' (1969), 'Cat's Cradle' (1963), and 'Breakfast of Champions' (1973).]]>

Just hours after the harrowing events of The Goodbye Man, Colter Shaw is hot on the trail of a missing person whose disappearance he desperately hopes to explain: his own father.

Following the enigmatic clues his father left behind, Shaw explores one site after another, seeing clearly for the first time what strange business his father was up to--and what dangerous people he was working against. But when Shaw is caught by these same people, he's rescued by an intruder: his own older brother Russell, from whom he's been estranged for more than a decade. After saving Shaw, Russell stays on, and the brothers--both very different and oddly similar--join forces to identify the family.

The King of Infinite Space 55881109 In this lush, magical, queer, and feminist take on Hamlet in modern-day New York City, a neuro-atypical physicist, along with his best friend Horatio and artist ex-fiancée, Lia, are caught up in the otherworldly events surrounding the death of his father.

Meet Ben Dane: brilliant, devastating, devoted, honest to a fault (truly, a fault). His Broadway theater baron father is dead--but on purpose or by accident? The question rips him apart.

Unable to face alone his mother's ghastly remarriage to his uncle, Ben turns to his dearest friend, Horatio Patel, whom he hasn't seen since their relationship changed forever from platonic to something...other. Loyal to a fault (truly, a fault), Horatio is on the first flight to New York City when he finds himself next to a sly tailor who portends inevitable disaster--and who seems ominously like an architect of mayhem himself.

Meanwhile, Lia, sundered her from her loved ones thanks to her addiction recovery, and torn from her art, has been drawn into the fold of three florists from New Orleans, seemingly ageless sisters who teach her the language of flowers and whose magical bouquets hold both curses and cures--for a price.

On one explosive night, these kinetic forces will collide, and the only possible outcome is death. But in the masterly hands of Lyndsay Faye, the story we all know has abundant surprises in store. Impish, captivating, and achingly romantic, this is Hamlet as you've never seen it before.]]>

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever.

Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.]]>

<![CDATA[A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3)]]> 62291 An alternate cover for this ISBN can be found here

Here is the third volume in George R.R. Martin's magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. Together, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, victim of the sorceress who holds him in her thrall. Young Robb still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. <![CDATA[While Justice Sleeps (Avery Keene, #1)]]> 55671327 #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A gripping, complexly plotted thriller set within the halls of the U.S. Supreme Court, where a young law clerk finds herself embroiled in a shocking mystery crafted by one of the most preeminent judges in America--from celebrated national leader and bestselling author Stacey Abrams.

"Abrams follows in Dan Brown's footprint with this masterfully plotted thriller that unfolds like the ultimate chess match--bold move to bolder move with lives hanging in the balance."--Lisa Gardner, author of Before She Disappeared

"A first-class legal thriller, favorably compared to many of the best, starting with The Pelican Brief, which it brings to mind. It's fast-paced and full of surprises--a terrific read."--Scott Turow, author of Presumed Innocent

Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together--excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn--the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases--has slipped into a coma, Avery's life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court--a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.

As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm's way in order to find the truth. While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters. Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction.]]>

<![CDATA[The L.A. Quartet: The Black Dahlia / The Big Nowhere / L.A. Confidential / White Jazz]]> 40911664
The Black Dahlia depicts the secret infrastructure of L.A.'s most sensational murder case. A young cop morphs into obsessed lover and lust-crazed avenger. The Dahlia claims him. She is the deus ex machina of a boomtown in extremis. The cop's rogue investigation is a one-way ticket to hell.

The Big Nowhere blends the crime novel and the political novel. It is winter, 1950--and the L.A. County Grand Jury is out to slam movieland Reds. It's a reverential shuck--and the three cops assigned to the job are out to grab all the glory they can. A series of brutal sex killings intervenes, and the job goes all-the-way bad.

L.A. Confidential is the great novel of Los Angeles in the 1950s. Political corruption. Scandal-rag journalism. Bad racial juju and gangland wars. Six local stiffs slaughtered in an all-night hash house. The glorious and overreaching LAPD on an unprecedented scale.

White Jazz gives us the tortured confession of a corrupt cop going down for the count. He's a slumlord, a killer, a parasitic exploiter. He's a pawn in a series of police power plays and starting to see that he's being had. He's just met a woman. Thus, he's determined to claw his way out of the horrifying world he's created--and he's determined to tell us everything.

The L.A. Quartet is a groundbreaking work of American popular fiction.]]>

<![CDATA[Humble Pi: A Comedy of Maths Errors]]> 39074550 An international bestseller

The book-length answer to anyone who ever put their hand up in math class and asked, "When am I ever going to use this in the real world?"

"Fun, informative, and relentlessly entertaining, Humble Pi is a charming and very readable guide to some of humanity's all-time greatest miscalculations--that also gives you permission to feel a little better about some of your own mistakes." --Ryan North, author of How to Invent Everything

Our whole world is built on math, from the code running a website to the equations enabling the design of skyscrapers and bridges. Most of the time this math works quietly behind the scenes . . . until it doesn't. All sorts of seemingly innocuous mathematical mistakes can have significant consequences.

Math is easy to ignore until a misplaced decimal point upends the stock market, a unit conversion error causes a plane to crash, or someone divides by zero and stalls a battleship in the middle of the ocean.

Exploring and explaining a litany of glitches, near misses, and mathematical mishaps involving the internet, big data, elections, street signs, lotteries, the Roman Empire, and an Olympic team, Matt Parker uncovers the bizarre ways math trips us up, and what this reveals about its essential place in our world. Getting it wrong has never been more fun.]]>

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Vita Nostra (Vita Nostra, #1) 38633526
Our life is brief . . .

While vacationing at the beach with her mother, Sasha Samokhina meets the mysterious Farit Kozhennikov under the most peculiar circumstances. The teenage girl is powerless to refuse when this strange and unusual man with an air of the sinister directs her to perform a task with potentially scandalous consequences. He rewards her effort with a strange golden coin.

As the days progress, Sasha carries out other acts for which she receives more coins from Kozhennikov. As summer ends, her domineering mentor directs her to move to a remote village and use her gold to enter the Institute of Special Technologies. Though she does not want to go to this unknown town or school, she also feels it’s the only place she should be. Against her mother’s wishes, Sasha leaves behind all that is familiar and begins her education.

As she quickly discovers, the institute’s "special technologies" are unlike anything she has ever encountered. The books are impossible to read, the lessons obscure to the point of maddening, and the work refuses memorization. Using terror and coercion to keep the students in line, the school does not punish them for their transgressions and failures; instead, their families pay a terrible price. Yet despite her fear, Sasha undergoes changes that defy the dictates of matter and time; experiences which are nothing she has ever dreamed of . . . and suddenly all she could ever want.

A complex blend of adventure, magic, science, and philosophy that probes the mysteries of existence, filtered through a distinct Russian sensibility, this astonishing work of speculative fiction—brilliantly translated by Julia Meitov Hersey—is reminiscent of modern classics such as Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, Max Barry’s Lexicon, and Katherine Arden’s The Bear and the Nightingale, but will transport them to a place far beyond those fantastical worlds.]]>

There's some nonsense to how ratings work. There's a lot of nuance involved in how one book can be 5 stars and a seemingly (objectively) better book can be 4 stars. A lot of times, expectations are at the heart of these oddities, and that is certainly the case here.

The Guest List 54911607 here.

It's the wedding of the year. But someone won't survive it.

On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate the wedding of Jules Keegan and Will Slater. Will is a rising television star, handsome and charming. Jules is a smart, ambitious magazine publisher. Though the sea is a little choppy and the cell service spotty, their wedding is everything you'd expect of a young power couple: designer dress, four-tiered cake, boutique whiskey, vintage champagne. Every detail has been curated to perfection. All that's left to orchestrate is the happiness.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. It's not long after the cake is cut and the champagne popped that resentments and petty jealousies come out. Worse yet, the latest barometer reading shows the weather has shifted from FAIR to CHANGEABLE, and dark clouds are looming overhead.

Everyone on the island has a secret. Everyone has a motive. And someone won't leave this wedding alive...]]>

The Devil Whispered 57239575
Ex special-forces commander Jacobi Slate is drawn into a downward spiraling vortex of fear and doubt while investigating a brutal murder that's been committed by an old friend. As evidence mounts that someone else might be pulling strings from the shadows, Jacobi struggles to understand a developing connection to his own past, which is quickly catching up to him.

Near-future cyberpunk collides with gritty detective noir in this fast-paced thriller that shines a light on both the vast shortcomings and the noble heroics of the human condition. To unravel the mystery, Jacobi will pull on every thread while chasing leads from the squalor of the most dangerous streets to the high-tech towers of the wealthy elite on his quest to understand a truth he might not be ready to face.]]>

The Gray Man (Gray Man, #1) 6547865 Courtland Gentry is a good man. But he’s a great assassin.

To those who lurk in the shadows, he’s known as the Gray Man. He is a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible and then fading away. And he always hits his target. Always.

But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. Forces like money. And power. And there are men who hold these as the only currency worth fighting for. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness.

But Court Gentry is going to prove that, for him, there’s no gray area between killing for a living and killing to stay alive…]]>

This is way way better than Part 1 (Heart of Darkness) that was released 3 years earlier. The art is good and doesn't look like they just grabbed some random artist for a spin-off. The story actually has Wolverine and Punisher killing large groups of minions. It's a pretty good time.

<![CDATA[Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1)]]> 42036538
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.]]>
