before anyone comes for me, this is not a bad 3 stars. i had a lot fun reading the prison healer but i did have some issues with this book that significantly lowered my rating. i was definitely expecting better, it was good not great

the prison healer follows seventeen-year-old kiva meridan. for a decade, she has been the healer in the infamous zalindov prison, making herself essential. supported by hopeful messages from her family, kiva's only aim is to stay alive. then, the notorious rebel queen arrives at the prison, gravely ill, and kiva gets a new message: don’t let her die. we are coming. the queen faces the trial by ordeal, a set of elemental challenges meant for the most dangerous criminals. knowing the weak queen is unlikely to survive, kiva steps up to take her place. if she succeeds, both will gain their freedom. but no one has ever made it through.

plot. my biggest problem with this book is i found it quite boring and repetitive. nothing really big was happening, and even the ordeals that were made out to be this big deal fell quite short. i was expecting way more, something more grand and intense and dramatic i mean we are talking about elemental trials here. to me, they honestly weren’t relevant, they almost felt like something just added in to make a cool plot but the execution was not done correctly.

the very last plot twist definitely shocked me though, i was not expecting it at ALL and the build up was honestly very well executed. it opens up a lot of possibilities which make me want to pick up the second book asap. out of the three big plot twists, one i suspected, the second i didn’t even think would be a plot twist because of how obvious it was and the last caught me off guard.

characters. i enjoyed all the characters in this book, but no one really stood out to me. something i liked was how kiva wasn’t portrayed as this badass fmc that we tend to see in fantasy books because be so fr if i was imprisoned at zalindov i’d do anything to stay alive. no complaints coming from me. she’s a very sweet and selfless character. jaren is a walking green flag, from the minute he was introduced i fell for him. what can i say ]]> 4.15 2021 The Prison Healer (The Prison Healer, #1)

i fear this might upset some people but i genuinely couldn’t get into this book. heartless was in my anticipated reads of 2025, i was so excited to read this and had such high expectations but i’m honestly so disappointed.

heartless is an alice in wonderland retelling. we follow catherine pinkerton and this book shows us her story and how she became the queen of hearts, when originally, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

this book was so dragged out for no reason. there was no reason for this to be 450 pages because when i tell you i was bored. i was just rolling my eyes every time i turned the page because half the things i was reading were not necessary. so repetitive.

i. characters.

catherine. this girl. no. she honestly annoyed me so much, her whole personality was just about that bakery. another thing is, the bakery was such a big thing and i had to read about basically just that for 450 pages just for it to be thrown out the window. her decisions and actions were so idiotic to a point where i was almost rooting for her downfall, blaming everyone but herself when she made that choice. absolutely not. her decisions were so stupid and made no sense at all

jest. he was okay i guess, i didn’t connect to his character at all though, he lacked so much depth.

if you’re going to write a tragic love story, i need to be invested in the characters, because if something tragic happens and i haven’t even connected to them, then i simply just won’t care

ii. the romance. yes girl !! go ahead and give me absolutely nothing. i literally do not care about and believe in their love story at all. also can we talk about how quickly they fell in love? it was giving insta love which i absolutely hate. instead of yapping about that stupid bakery and how she hates the king, we could’ve done with more catherine and jest to actually build up their love story and make us believe in it.

iii. the writing. it wasn’t too bad honestly one of the only redeeming qualities of this book but it completely failed the show not tell writing “ruleâ€�.

i fear this might upset some people but i genuinely couldn’t get into this book. heartless was in my anticipated reads of 2025, i was so excited to read this and had such high expectations but i’m honestly so disappointed.

heartless is an alice in wonderland retelling. we follow catherine pinkerton and this book shows us her story and how she became the queen of hearts, when originally, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

this book was so dragged out for no reason. there was no reason for this to be 450 pages because when i tell you i was bored. i was just rolling my eyes every time i turned the page because half the things i was reading were not necessary. so repetitive.

i. characters.

catherine. this girl. no. she honestly annoyed me so much, her whole personality was just about that bakery. another thing is, the bakery was such a big thing and i had to read about basically just that for 450 pages just for it to be thrown out the window. her decisions and actions were so idiotic to a point where i was almost rooting for her downfall, blaming everyone but herself when she made that choice. absolutely not. her decisions were so stupid and made no sense at all

jest. he was okay i guess, i didn’t connect to his character at all though, he lacked so much depth.

if you’re going to write a tragic love story, i need to be invested in the characters, because if something tragic happens and i haven’t even connected to them, then i simply just won’t care

ii. the romance. yes girl !! go ahead and give me absolutely nothing. i literally do not care about and believe in their love story at all. also can we talk about how quickly they fell in love? it was giving insta love which i absolutely hate. instead of yapping about that stupid bakery and how she hates the king, we could’ve done with more catherine and jest to actually build up their love story and make us believe in it.

iii. the writing. it wasn’t too bad honestly one of the only redeeming qualities of this book but it completely failed the show not tell writing “ruleâ€�.

i’m gonna start with what’s “negativeâ€�. my main (and only) issue with this book is that there was a little too much happening for its length, which took away from us being able to see quinn and logan’s relationship grow. other than that i loved the plot, i just wish we had a it wasn’t as overly packed with plot lines.

quinn. i really like her character, but there’s one issue: sometimes she seems a bit dull. i think it’s mainly because she lacks a lot of depth.

logan. excuse me who gave him the right to be so perfect? he had no right. i was giggling and kicking my feet at everything this man said. no but in all seriousness i love him and his love for quinn is adorable

i’m gonna start with what’s “negativeâ€�. my main (and only) issue with this book is that there was a little too much happening for its length, which took away from us being able to see quinn and logan’s relationship grow. other than that i loved the plot, i just wish we had a it wasn’t as overly packed with plot lines.

quinn. i really like her character, but there’s one issue: sometimes she seems a bit dull. i think it’s mainly because she lacks a lot of depth.

logan. excuse me who gave him the right to be so perfect? he had no right. i was giggling and kicking my feet at everything this man said. no but in all seriousness i love him and his love for quinn is adorable

members of the d&d group. i loved them all, just wasn’t as interested in them as the other characters. i loved the dynamic between quinn and the d&d group and the found family aspect

first of all the romance, i felt no chemistry; it was just pure lust. whenever they were talking, one of them (especially nikhil) would be thinking about them having sex. that’s literally all this book was?! you wanna know how many times the word was mentioned (and i haven’t even finished the book). 30 TIMES!! yes you read that right. 30.damn.times.

here’s an example, they were talking about something serious and this is what the mmc is thinking : “and they could also have sex again.â€� can you not?! WE GET IT!! you’re physically attracted to her. and this goes both ways, it happened with the fmc too.

also the whole friends with benefits thing was not for me. about 20-30% in the book they decided they both needed some “pleasureâ€� so they had a “one time thingâ€�. and you’d think after that they would get together because they finally realised they had feelings for each other? no!

i also found myself skimming way too many times. i was getting really bored

other than that, the plot was interesting. kind of?
it’s nice to see representation of people of color & sexualities in books.

the perfect sentence I found to describe how I feel about this book is ”you were good, I’m waiting for you to be greatâ€�. don’t get me wrong this book was good and i enjoyed reading this, but i was expecting so much more so i’m a little disappointed. the general idea of this plot sounded great but the execution sadly wasn’t as good.

i also did not connect to any of these characters.. and honestly didn’t feel much for them either. jenna was relatable to some extent but i’m not the biggest fan of her character which is actually painful to say because i usually love and relate to ann liang’s fmcs on a different level. one character i wished we’d seen more of is jessica, i feel like that would’ve been something so interesting to explore. aaron was cute i guess but again i didn’t feel that many emotions towards him.

the writing was beautiful, one of the redeeming qualities of this book, but who’s surprised this is ann liang her writing is simply beautiful

the perfect sentence I found to describe how I feel about this book is ”you were good, I’m waiting for you to be greatâ€�. don’t get me wrong this book was good and i enjoyed reading this, but i was expecting so much more so i’m a little disappointed. the general idea of this plot sounded great but the execution sadly wasn’t as good.

i also did not connect to any of these characters.. and honestly didn’t feel much for them either. jenna was relatable to some extent but i’m not the biggest fan of her character which is actually painful to say because i usually love and relate to ann liang’s fmcs on a different level. one character i wished we’d seen more of is jessica, i feel like that would’ve been something so interesting to explore. aaron was cute i guess but again i didn’t feel that many emotions towards him.

the writing was beautiful, one of the redeeming qualities of this book, but who’s surprised this is ann liang her writing is simply beautiful
