Achilles, Come Down 224077706
¡®I¡¯m dead.¡¯ He can¡¯t even hear his own thoughts over the loudness of the world, staggering where he stands, eyes still fixated on the sky, on the sun. ¡®I¡¯m dead, I died, I felt my heart stop, this can¡¯t be, it can¡¯t-¡¯

¡°Hey,¡± it comes again, a little more urgent than before, a little closer, another hammer to his ears and all the noise shrieking behind his eyes. He recoils hard enough to go stumbling as a hand reaches for him, covered in flesh rather than empty bone, tan and recognizable. Unbelievable.

There¡¯s something wet trickling from his nose. Bile stings on the back of his tongue. The words dissolve into the rest of the white noise as he stares up at the blue of the sky, and tries to remember if he¡¯d ever had a hallucination as bright as this.

¡®I have to be dead,¡¯ he thinks. Somehow, he isn¡¯t.

Or: Gojo Satoru goes back in time. He makes a couple of changes for the better.]]>

I still have a special place in my heart for it, believe me, but the mental age-gap can be problematic.

I think it worked well enough considering that it wasn¡¯t technically time-travel, but age regression as far as I can remember?? (i.e. Gojo is physically the same age as everyone else at school, and just maintains memory of his original life)

You could definitely argue that it gets a little fuzzy there. I¡¯m willing to believe that he is mentally close to his physical age because of hormones, gaps in memory, etc. but I do find it sometimes uncomfy when I think about it too hard.

It¡¯s well-written as hell, though. No doubt about it. The entire series so far.

My only problems are with the logistics of the relationship, because after reading I realised it could be kinda¡blegh.

I don¡¯t think it¡¯s like¡intended to be pedophilic or anything. It¡¯s very much presented as memories of a past-life rather than this grown man¡¯s mind in a child¡¯s body around other children?? It sounds so much worse trying to relay it, but bottom-line, it¡¯s not like 35x14, because at the end of the day Gojo is offered a second-chance, and just has memories of his first one. Does that make any sense?? Probably not.

I don¡¯t blame anybody who would find it uncomfy, but in the moment, I didn¡¯t think it was CREEPY CREEPY, at least it¡¯s not intended to be.

Originally, I actually stopped reading the series after the first volume because of it, but I decided to give it another chance. While I did end up enjoying them plot-wise, I really just do think the parameters of the age-regression aren¡¯t developed enough for me to feel comfortable continuing it once it¡¯s updated. I don¡¯t think the author had Dead-Dove-Do-Not-Eat-esque intentions, but they could have fleshed it out in a way that made it more comfortable for the reader.

I found Megumi¡¯s perspective surprisingly comfortable, considering the fact that I get withdrawals when I¡¯m not in Gojo or Geto¡¯s head for two seconds. I don¡¯t usually seek out Itafushi (or other modern-timeline JJK pairing) works, they¡¯re fun but I personally just prefer Satosugu. But when I do read Itfs, I¡¯m always pleasantly surprised at how lighthearted other sides of this fandom can be. I generally tend to find myself more drawn to tragic stories, for whatever reason? A perfectly good and happily-ended romance will be right there and I will actively seek out horrendously sad fics about another pairing. It¡¯s just how I am, so I really use Itafushi fics as palate-cleansers.

Which is not to say I don¡¯t appreciate them! Using them just as that would be a major disservice to the talented authors in this fandom and the work they¡¯ve put in. And trust me, that work does pay off. This is very, very well-written. I¡¯ve found myself consistently impressed by Itfs writers whenever I find myself in their corner of fandom.

This is no exception. In fact, I think it¡¯s one of my favourite portrayals of them. I¡¯m usually not big on AUs where the inciting incident is omitted (in this case, Yuuji becoming Sukuna¡¯s vessel) because it tends to change character-dynamics in a way I find unappealing. It¡¯s not objectively bad, and some authors make it work, I just don¡¯t love it when I¡¯m reading.

I found this work to be somewhere between those two. While I didn¡¯t find their Megumi and Yuuji to be entirely OOC, they definitely did not feel exactly like their canon counterparts (which is to be expected from an AU, but yknow).

Jujutsu Kaisen has a weird pacing that is neither constantly filled with action nor constantly filler episodes/chapters, and finding that balance in fics that are building new romantic relationships but also rewriting an existing canon friendship can be hard. I think TBoAPSB did a decent job of not making it a slice-of-life, though it did edge on that writing-style sporadically. Slice-of-life is cool, it¡¯s just not what I was personally looking for.

Bottom-line, I think this was good, but needed some more action toward the beginning. I understand that everything comes to a head in the last couple of chapters, but it could¡¯ve used some more buildup Jujutsu-wise.

Now, let¡¯s talk characters.

I liked the Nanami recognition. We don¡¯t tend to get a lot of Nanami and his influence on Gojo¡¯s kids, so that was refreshing. It really highlighted the fact that Nanami was a part of their lives for such an extended period of time.

Shoko was a little forgettable, in this, to me. I¡¯m not sure if that¡¯s because it was a month ago and I didn¡¯t have any notes on her to jog my memory, or if she really was a little irrelevant, but take that as you will. I usually tend to remember Shoko and her characterisation whenever she¡¯s more central to the story.

Yuuji was a little hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes he felt just as familiar as Yuuji from the animanga, and other times he felt a bit like a filler character. I mean the whole point of this fic is him not being exposed to Jujutsu like he was in canon, so maybe expecting his character to remain so similar was stupid on my part.

Megumi is a really fun character to get the perspective of. Not just fun, but like¡fascinating. Characters who present as one way and think another have always been a favourite of mine, and Jujutsu Kaisen is honestly a breeding ground for those. Megumi¡¯s just perpetually-annoyed enough to earn his title of Miserable Bitch, but he can also be really loving, and brave and complex.

I wasn¡¯t in love with the characterisation of Gojo, in this one. I know that he¡¯s rough around the edges and I know that raising a kid at seventeen is probably really freaking hard, but I can¡¯t help but think he would¡¯ve done a better job at raising Megumi. I mean, yeah, Megumi ends up fine and at the end of the day, they clearly love each other very much, but the source of a lot of the angst between them is Gojo¡¯s Questionable Parenting. Which, I guess is never confirmed nor denied by the canon and therefore is very much a possibility (also, people are allowed to write whatever they want, canonically possible or not, but I digress) but this dynamic between them features so minimally within the fandom that I just find it a bit uncomfortable. Maybe that¡¯s bias, maybe that¡¯s me having been too lazy to learn a new character dynamic and labelling it as ¡®annoying¡¯ so I can move on. I dunno! I just personally wasn¡¯t obsessed. He and Megumi had some very sweet moments later in the story, though. Still, it felt as though this Gojo had very little identity external to Megumi and some small flashbacks. Speaking of flashbacks¡

Though Geto does not actually feature in this, he¡¯s easily one of my favourites in the series and so by the power of nepotism, he¡¯s getting a mention. The flashbacks to Geto are some of the only snippets we get of Gojo¡¯s life before Megumi. (This could be intentional, since I know the author has a prequel planned!) The jump between Gojo as Megumi¡¯s guardian and Gojo¡¯s secret escapades never felt jarring, I think mainly because there was an overlap. I know ¡°canonically¡± Gojo and Geto never saw each other for ten years, but I think we all know by now that¡¯s BS. Geto (who is objectively one of the biggest parts of Gojo¡¯s life, especially pre-Megumi) was a good vehicle to learn even a little about Gojo as a person and not just a parent. I say ¡®even a little¡¯, because it really was not a lot, but for a Megumi-centric story, it was effective enough to get me by. I just personally would have liked to know more about Stsg because they¡¯re my favourites, and the flashbacks, however short they were, broke my heart.

Romance-wise I found this to be pretty decent. If it weren¡¯t characters I already know, I might not have liked it, since it¡¯s not any tropes I particularly like, but it gets the job done. Megumi and Yuuji¡¯s liking each other felt a little rushed, but even that wasn¡¯t a dealbreaker for me. The side-relationships (i.e. potential Nobamaki, mentions of past Satosugu) were fun and made the story feel more well-rounded and true to the canon-material where everybody kinda knows everybody.

Friendship-wise, pretty solid. I found Nobara to be slightly less entertaining than usual, but I liked Megumi¡¯s more fleshed-out established relationships with the Tokyo and Kyoto students.

Plot-wise, it¡¯s alright. I think it could have been a little more stable. It goes from one extreme to the other and speeds up to the point of being a little jarring, but it¡¯s fun throughout. Made me realise how much of the plot hinges on Yuji¡¯s becoming Sukuna¡¯s vessel. (Merger, Mahito, etc.)

All in all, this is very enjoyable. Like surprisingly so! (That¡¯s not a dig at the author or the ship, that¡¯s a dig at me for liking another ship that makes me horrendously sad and refusing to read anything else. Except this, apparently!)

I have no idea where the hell to fit in my favourite quotations, so they¡¯re all staying in my notes, never to see the light of day as things I singled out from something I read :) Just know it made me egregiously sad and I¡¯m not subjecting you to it, out of love ]]>

There¡¯s a new web-slinging superhero in Tokyo, but as far as Megumi¡¯s concerned, it isn't worth dwelling on.

He has no time to dwell on anything, really, between starting life at Jujutsu College and struggling with everything from increasing amounts of homework to dealing with a ragtag group of nosy friends, an overbearing father figure, a steadily worsening caffeine addiction, a bizarre amount of stalking, supervillains attacking the city, and a roommate whose smile is a bit too captivating.

On top of that, there¡¯s probably something up with Itadori. But Megumi doesn¡¯t want to think about his new roommate and best friend too much¡ª well, more than he does already.

It¡¯s all slowly driving him crazy. And for some reason, he might be starting to feel the same way about a certain superhero he keeps running into¡]]>

<![CDATA[Tyranny of the Minority: Why American Democracy Reached the Breaking Point]]> 122769171
America is undergoing a massive experiment: It is moving, in fits and starts, toward a multiracial democracy, something few societies have ever done. But the prospect of change has sparked an authoritarian backlash that threatens the very foundations of our political system. Why is this happening here, and not in other diversifying nations? And what can we do to save our democracy?

With the clarity and brilliance that made their first book, How Democracies Die, a global bestseller, Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt offer a coherent framework for understanding these volatile times. They draw on a wealth of examples¡ªfrom 1930s France to present-day Thailand¡ªto explain why and how political parties turn against democracy: When political leaders realize they can no longer win at the ballot box, they begin to attack the system from within, condoning violent extremists and using the law as a weapon. Unfortunately, our Constitution makes us uniquely vulnerable. It is a pernicious enabler of minority rule, allowing partisan minorities to consistently thwart and even rule over popular majorities. Most modern democracies¡ªfrom Germany and Sweden to Argentina and New Zealand¡ªhave eliminated outdated institutions like elite upper chambers, indirect elections, and lifetime tenure for judges. The United States lags dangerously behind.

In this revelatory book, Levitsky and Ziblatt issue an urgent call to perfect our national experiment. It¡¯s a daunting task, but we have remade our country before¡ªmost notably, after the Civil War and during the Progressive Era. And now we are at a crossroads: America will either become a multiracial democracy or it will cease to be a democracy at all.]]>

I just tend to prefer the earlier arcs, whether that¡¯s nostalgia or something else) but also how differently the story could have gone at different points of tension. Toji or Geto or Gojo making a slightly different decision at any point during this could have changed the trajectory of the story spanning the next thirteen years. No spoilers for Shibuya, but you know what I¡¯m talking about. It¡¯s just insane, and I miss how Gege used to tie things together in a more believable way.

first-read

I¡¯ve always loved that there wasn¡¯t some ginormous Gojo vs Geto fight to end off the arc. As sick as that would have been, the fact that they actually talk about it (via a horrific excuse for communication skills, but alas) does a good job of communicating to the reader the causes for Geto¡¯s choices toward the end of the volume.

The Boy on the Wooden Box 17560330 Even in the darkest of times¡ªespecially in the darkest of times¡ªthere is room for strength and bravery. A remarkable memoir from Leon Leyson, one of the youngest children to survive the Holocaust on Oskar Schindler¡¯s list.

Leon Leyson (born Leib Lezjon) was only ten years old when the Nazis invaded Poland and his family was forced to relocate to the Krakow ghetto. With incredible luck, perseverance and grit, Leyson was able to survive the sadism of the Nazis, including that of the demonic Amon Goeth, commandant of Plaszow, the concentration camp outside Krakow. Ultimately, it was the generosity and cunning of one man, a man named Oskar Schindler, who saved Leon Leyson's life, and the lives of his mother, his father, and two of his four siblings, by adding their names to his list of workers in his factory - a list that became world renowned: Schindler's List.

This, the only memoir published by a former Schindler's List child, perfectly captures the innocence of a small boy who goes through the unthinkable. Most notable is the lack of rancour, the lack of venom, and the abundance of dignity in Mr Leyson's telling. The Boy on the Wooden Box is a legacy of hope, a memoir unlike anything you've ever read.]]>

Years ago, Sukie moved in with Nathan because her mother was dead and her father was difficult, and she had nowhere else to go. Now they are on the brink of the inevitable.

surprisingly i didn't hate the writing. it's simple but evocative. the lack of quotation-marks is a bit hard to keep up with, but not unreadable by any means. as a review i saw earlier stated (in my opinion) correctly, it helps you appreciate both prose and dialogue, and not skip over description in favour of the latter like you sometimes tend to. every word is equally as emphasised as the last and the next. it's really unique and honestly very immersive once you get accustomed to it.

i don't believe that mr. salary is meant to be read as a romance, per se. definitely not a wholesome one at least. it's more of a study, through a handful of characters. a study of power, and obsession, and intimacy as it relates to both the physical and social.

there's something very warped about the relationship between nathan and sukie. an unavoidable power-balance that, no matter how hard you try, is impossible to ignore. lines blur between caretaker and lover and it's clear by the end that not only is sukie devoted to him to a fault, but that nathan's reciprocation of that (to any degree) raises more questions about their entanglement than answers.]]>

this is my first read by sally rooney and i'm glad for it. it's a good introduction to, not only her stylistic choices, but the realism of the characters and the types of stories she tends to tell. it's short enough to ease you into the whole no-quotation-marks thing, but also long enough to get a feel for her style.

there's something very warped about the relationship between nathan and sukie. an unavoidable power-balance that, no matter how hard you try, is impossible to ignore. lines blur between caretaker and lover and it's clear by the end that not only is sukie devoted to him to a fault, but that nathan's reciprocation of that (to any degree) raises more questions about their entanglement than answers.

<![CDATA[Something Wasn't Right: The most gut wrenching book ever]]> 230279647 Amelia just an average, pitiful teenager.

Depressed. Deprived. Unwanted. A girl who never had friends, never felt attractive, never belonged. She disliked school. She disliked everything.

She lives with her mother Margot, a famous pianist. A woman so incredibly gifted yet so completely destroyed. A drug addict. A bad parent. They were everything a mother and daughter should never be.

No warmth, no love. Only silence so dense that it smothered. Only a house heavy with drugs, cigarette smoke and anger. Amelia lived years imprisoned within that loneliness, clawing at the walls of her own life. No one ever noticed her, no one ever mattered. So, she formed an alliance.

Out of thin air. A chair. A fucking chair. Her imagination, her sole solace. And then even that was taken from her.

What follows is more than horrific. The conclusion? Unspeakable. Unforgivable. The kind of conclusion that doesn't merely shatter you, it disembowels you, knots your internal organs, and leaves them to putrefy. The kind that will play back in your mind for decades, devouring you long after you finish the final page.

This isn't so much a book. This is an exile. And once you begin, you're trapped.]]>

Counting Backwards 216052828 Inspired by true events revealing America's troubling past involving Pre-War eugenics practices, this emotionally riveting dual timeline novel brings together the lives of two inspiring women while exploring the timely and important themes of immigration, fertility, and motherhood. A revelatory tale of heartbreak and hope, it is an unputdownable story that will stay with readers long after the final page.

Jessa Gidney is a woman on the edge. Passed over for partner at her Manhattan law firm, she reevaluates her priorities, focusing on her deep desire to become a mother and her newfound interest in pro bono work. Her first case? An incarcerated woman named Isobel Perez fighting against a deportation order. An unsettling revelation about Isobel's health leads Jessa to uncover a horrifying pattern of medical malpractice within the detention facility. With her corporate law firm unsupportive and her husband, Vance, only concerned about the added stress while they're trying for a baby, Jessa is torn about whether to intervene. But when a shocking secret about her own family history comes to light, she is propelled to fight for these women, no matter the cost.

Nearly a century earlier in Virginia, seventeen-year-old, real-life Carrie Buck dreams of escaping her life as an unpaid laborer for her foster family. She yearns for a family of her own, a dream that seems within reach when she attracts the attention of her foster mother's handsome nephew. But he soon abandons her, and she's cast out, pregnant and completely alone. As a ward of the State, she is designated "feebleminded" and left to the mercy of a corrupt and heartless legal system. Her courageous fight for her own destiny leads to a landmark Supreme Court case.

As the novel alternates between these two women's stories, a startling connection is revealed. Tackling complex topics such as reproductive injustice, immigration law, eugenics, and societal expectations of women, the story is a compelling exploration of empowerment and self-determination. With a gripping investigation reminiscent of Erin Brockovich woven throughout, the tale is a testament to the courage it takes to stay true to oneself.]]>

Daisy Jones & The Six 75739629 Everybody knows Daisy Jones and the Six.

From the moment Daisy walked barefoot on to the stage at the Whisky, she and the band were a sensation.

Their sound defined an era. Their albums were on every turntable. They played sold-out arenas from coast to coast.

Then, on 12 July 1979, it all came crashing down.

They were lovers, friends, brothers. But they were also rivals.

This is the story of their legendary rise and irrevocable fall. A story of ambition, desire, heartbreak and music.

Everyone was there. Everyone remembers it differently. Nobody knew why they split. Until now...]]>

The Courage to Be Disliked shows you how to unlock the power within yourself to become your best and truest self, change your future and find lasting happiness. It¡¯s a philosophy that¡¯s profoundly liberating, allowing us to develop the courage to change, and to ignore the limitations that we and those around us can place on ourselves.

She's a Lamb! 216698520
Jessamyn St. Germain is meant to be a star. Not an actor who occasionally books yogurt commercials and certainly not a lowly usher at one of Vancouver¡¯s smallest regional theaters. No, she is bound for greatness, and that¡¯s why the part of Maria in the theater¡¯s upcoming production of The Sound of Music is hers. Or it¡¯s going to be.

Jessamyn may have been relegated to the position of childminder for the little brats playing the von Trapp children, but it¡¯s so obvious she¡¯s there for a different reason ¡ª the director wants her close to the role so when Samantha, the lead, inevitably fails, Jessamyn will be there to take her place in the spotlight.

This must be it. Because if it isn¡¯t, well, then every skipped meal, every brutal rehearsal, every inch won against a man attempting to drag her down will have all been for nothing.

Sharp, relentless, and darkly funny, She¡¯s a Lamb! is a cutting satire about the grotesque pall patriarchy casts over one woman¡¯s delusional quest to achieve her dreams and the depths she will sink to for a chance at the life she¡¯s convinced she deserves.]]>

Dante has no personality, Stephanie needs to PLEASE stop messing with ScarJulian and Tella is as annoying as ever.

I, will however, by some work of the Lord above, be continuing this series, if only for more Jacks content to hold me over until ACFTL.

The Song of Achilles 58604952
Achilles, ¡°best of all the Greeks,¡± is everything Patroclus is not¡ªstrong, beautiful, the child of a goddess¡ªand by all rights their paths should never cross. Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative connection gives way to a steadfast friendship. As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something far deeper¡ªdespite the displeasure of Achilles¡¯ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles. When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear. And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate.

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.]]>

James Anderson had a plan. Or half of one. All that matters is that he managed to do what his older brother, the famous Aaron Warner Anderson, never did: infiltrate Ark Island, the last refuge of The Reestablishment. In the past decade no outsider has breached the stronghold of the authoritarian regime, but James is in. In a prison cell, sure, but as far as James is concerned, a win is a win.

It¡¯s been ten years since the fall of The Reestablishment. Ten years since the notorious duo ¡ª Juliette Ferrars and Aaron Warner Anderson ¡ª led a worldwide rebellion and established the New Republic of the West. But after a decade of unsettling quiet, The Reestablishment is ready to make a devastating move, and they have the perfect person for the job.

Rosabelle Wolff had a plan. She always has a plan. On Ark Island, where constant surveillance is packaged as security, even emotions must be experienced with caution. A trained assassin, her every movement is monitored by synthetic intelligence¡ªand when she¡¯s given an order to kill, she never hesitates.

Brimming with pulse-pounding action and torturous romance, Watch Me is an explosive journey through a dystopian landscape where enemies-to-lovers has never felt more impossible. Step into a beloved and breathtaking world that demands an answer to a desperate question¡ª

Notes from Underground 49455 Notes from Underground marks the dividing line between nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction, and between the visions of self each century embodied. One of the most remarkable characters in literature, the unnamed narrator is a former official who has defiantly withdrawn into an underground existence. In complete retreat from society, he scrawls a passionate, obsessive, self-contradictory narrative that serves as a devastating attack on social utopianism and an assertion of man¡¯s essentially irrational nature.

Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, whose Dostoevsky translations have become the standard, give us a brilliantly faithful edition of this classic novel, conveying all the tragedy and tormented comedy of the original.]]>

This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the reading public in Europe, and later in America where it was first published by New Directions in 1952. The story of the improbable yet convincingly described travels of the petit-bourgeois (and largely autobiographical) antihero, Bardamu, from the trenches of World War I, to the African jungle, to New York and Detroit, and finally to life as a failed doctor in Paris, takes the readers by the scruff and hurtles them toward the novel's inevitable, sad conclusion.]]> 453 Louis-Ferdinand C¨¦line 0811216543 rania ¡ï 0 to-read 4.23 1932 Journey to the End of the Night

Born for Love ?is truly fascinating.¡± ¡ª?Gretchen Rubin,? author of? The Happiness Project From birth, when babies' fingers instinctively cling to those of adults, their bodies and brains seek an intimate connection, a bond made possible by? empathy ¡ªthe ability to love and to share the feelings of others.
In this provocative book, psychiatrist Bruce D. Perry and award-winning science journalist Maia Szalavitz interweave research and stories from Perry's practice with cutting-edge scientific studies and historical examples to explain how empathy develops, why it is essential for our development into healthy adults, and how to raise kids with empathy while navigating threats from technological change and other?forces in the modern world. Perry and Szalavitz show that compassion underlies the qualities that make society work¡ªtrust, altruism, collaboration, love, charity¡ªand how difficulties related to empathy are key factors in social problems such as war, crime, racism, and mental illness. Even physical health, from infectious diseases to heart attacks, is deeply affected by our human connections to one another. As? Born for Love ?reveals, recent changes in technology, child-rearing practices, education, and lifestyles are starting to rob children of necessary human contact and deep relationships¡ªthe essential foundation for empathy and a caring, healthy society. Surely, the pueblo there will have the answers to reverse this curse or end sedientos altogether. Another unexpected turn? Lalo runs right into a beautiful young woman who¡¯d gladly stake him.

Fortunately, mostly for him, they share a common enemy. They can stop these evil beasts. Together. And if along the way, Lalo and Fernanda discover what it is to truly live and love, then they¡¯ll have won anyway.]]>

<![CDATA[I'm Sorry for My Loss: An Urgent Examination of Reproductive Care in America]]> 203751764
More than a million women lose a pregnancy each year, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or termination for medical reasons. For most, the experience often casts a shadow of isolation, shame, and blame. In the aftermath of the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v Wade, 25 million women of childbearing age live in states with laws that restrict access to abortion, including for those who never wanted to end their pregnancies. How did we get here?

Rebecca Little and Colleen Long, childhood friends who grew up to be journalists, both experienced late-term loss, and together they take an incisive, deeply reported look at the issue, working to shatter taboos that have made so many pregnant women feel ashamed and alone. They trace the experience of pregnancy loss and reproductive care from America's founding to the present day, exposing the deep impact made by a dangerous tangle of laws, politics, medicine, racism, and misogyny. Combining powerful personal narratives with exhaustive research, I'm Sorry for My Loss is a comprehensive examination on how pregnancy loss came to be so stigmatized and politicized, and why a system of more compassionate care is critical for everyone.]]>

Atmosphere 220817728 From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six comes an epic new novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s Space Shuttle program about the extraordinary lengths we go to live and love beyond our limits.

Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA¡¯s Space Shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston¡¯s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easy-going even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warm-hearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.

Fast-paced, thrilling, and emotional, Atmosphere is Taylor Jenkins Reid at her best: transporting readers to iconic times and places, with complex protagonists, telling a passionate and soaring story about the transformative power of love, this time among the stars.]]>

<![CDATA[Rough: How violence has found its way into the bedroom and what we can do about it]]> 58214926 Rough is a revolutionary non-fiction work exploring the narratives of sexual violence that we don't talk about.

A bad sexual experience.

A grey area.

Not rape but... A violation.

These are the terms we use to describe the experiences we don't have words for. The way we talk about topics such as sex, consent, assault aren't fit for purpose.

Through powerful testimony from 50 women and non-binary people, this book shines a light on the sexual violence that takes place in our bedrooms and beyond, sometimes at the hands of people we know, trust, or even love. Rough investigates violations such as 'stealthing,' non-consensual choking, and non-consensual rough sex acts that our culture is only starting to recognise as sexual violence.

The book explores the ways in which systems of oppression manifest in our sexual culture - from racist microaggressions, to fatphobic acts of aggression, and ableist dehumanising behaviour. An intersectional, sex-positive, kink-positive work, the book also examines how white supremacy, transphobia, biphobia, homophobia, and misogyny are driving forces behind sexual violence.

Rough is an urgent, timely call for change to the systems that oppress us all.]]>
